Jakuchikyo (Seven Falls Camping)
If hiking and waterfalls are top on your list when camping, then Seven Falls is your place to go. The campground is nestled beneath 4,386-foot Mt. Jakuchi and has seven main falls. Don’t let the name fool you; there are numerous other smaller falls throughout the park. Seven Falls has gear rental options, so stop by IT&T to find out what is available and at what cost.

Akiyoshidai Family Travel Village
Akiyoshidai is the largest karst* plateau in Japan located in Mine City. The beautiful landscape of limestone was formed over 350 million years ago from the southern sea and has led to Akiyoshidai being named a National Monument in 1964. Under the plateau base is one of Japan’s largest limestone caves that is continuing to grow. This area is also the home to an observatory, a Geopark, and an international art village.
* Karst (noun): a landscape that is underlain by limestone which has been eroded by dissolution, producing ridges, towers, fissures, sinkholes, and other characteristic landforms.
Meda Forest Camp Site *
Meda Forest is a quaint little camping area in a valley about a three-hour drive northwest of the air station. There is catch-and-release fishing at the campground and a playground for the kids. There are also hot springs and the Yakumo Wind Cave nearby. * Select campsites only. Dogs must be leashed—no large breeds.

Yakushima Island
This island is the home of the Shiratani Unsuikyo Forest. As mentioned in 101 Things To Do, it served as the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke. It’s a great place to get your back country fix — navigating trails through lush, dense forests and staying in mountain huts similar to those lean-tos found on the Appalachian Trail (three walls and a roof). There’s no shortage of wildlife, including leeches and the extremely poisonous Mamushi pit viper. Staying in the mountain huts or camping nearby is free; just make sure to adhere to the principle of “leave no trace."
Tsutsumigaura Natural Park
This little slice of heaven is tucked away on Miyajima, the island famed for its great water torii and the Itsukushima Shrine. Meet wild deer everywhere, and be aware! These protected creatures are inquisitive, especially when it comes to food. The Tsutsumigaura Natural Park offers plush cabins and tent camping as well as kitchen facilities for rent.
Hamada Beach *
Hamada Beach camping at the Iwami Seaside Park is butted up to the Sea of Japan and surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. There is an aquarium and a large playground nearby. IT&T can assist with renting camping gear. Hamada Beach does offer tent and car camping as well as cabins. * Select campsites only.

Okunoshima (Rabbit Island)
Arguably the cutest place in Japan, who wouldn’t want to camp on an island overtaken by fluffy rabbits? Tent camping is near the visitor center and though the island is not easy to get to, it will most definitely be worth the hop, skip, and jump.

Katazoe Beach Camping Site
Located just south of Iwakuni, Oshima District is an island with natural beauty. With sweeping mountainous terrain and sandy beaches, it is an easy getaway. There is no shortage of hiking trails and beaches on the island. While there, be sure to check out the aquarium and restaurants. The Katazoe Beach Campground is located on the eastern side of the island on a pitch of high ground that offers great views of the water below. IT&T can provide information on available amenities, activities, and cost.
Kirara Cottage
Near the city of Izumo, Kirara Beach offers cottages with a picturesque view of the Japanese coast. These seaside cottages are a well-known glamping destination for Shimane Prefecture. There are Finland-style saunas, a salon on-site, and every cottage porch overlooks the Sea of Japan. If you still want to rough it, Kirara does have eight auto camping sites with electricity (for a fee). There is a country club, hot springs, and plenty of oceanfront property for summer beach time fun.

Yasaka Camping Village *
Yasaka Camping Village is in the Yamaguchi Prefecture and straddles the Kose River upstream from Yasaka Dam. There are two camping areas in the village. The first camping area is at the start of the Yasakakyo Promenade, a 2.7 km (1.6 miles) long nature trail that follows the Kose River. It has tent sites and cabins. On the other side of the river is car camping.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park *
If you’re looking to get far away, then Shikotu-Toya National Park on the north island of Hokkaido is for you. The park covers nearly a thousand square kilometers of lakes, volcanoes, mountains, and hiking trails, and is the home to Jigokudani or “Hell Valley.” Jigokudani is a 24-acre geothermal crater. It has bubbling sulphuric hot spring baths surrounded by yukihin statues, demons who are ambassadors to the afterlife and secure good fortune for humans. The park has plenty of campsites and, like most other Japanese campgrounds, there is rental equipment available. * Select campsites only. Dogs must be leashed.

If you prefer to drive in Japan, verify that parking is available at your destination, as it can be limited and expensive in some areas. If you don’t have a car or a vehicle big enough for all your camping gear, Car Rental has vans and SUVs to rent for such trips. Depending on where you want to camp this may be cheaper than taking your personal vehicle.
For families that are looking to rent a vehicle to go camping, we recommend getting one of our passenger vans. The passenger vans can seat up to 8 people and if you have five or fewer people, the seats can be adjusted to allow for more cargo area. There is plenty of room for camping gear, such as tents and sleeping bags, but also for the family. - Chris Thompson, Car Rental Manager

If you’re adventurous, forge your own path with a pack and a pair of boots. Hike up the side of the mountain and build your own campsite. Stay safe by using proper campfire practices and following all local laws and guidelines - like Smokey Bear said, "Only you can prevent forest fires."
What to Know The Library is a great resource for researching camping in the local and remote areas in Japan. Even if you are unsure of where you would like to experience the great outdoors, the friendly staff at the Library can introduce you to the many resources available.
The Library receives an issue of Outdoor Japan Traveler every quarter. This seasonal magazine features exciting destinations in the Asia-Pacific Region. This is not available to take home, but it can be perused at the Library. There are several more titles available covering topics like hiking, trekking, biking, and bird watching.

Try the fresh local produce available from road side stands along the way!
From MCAS, take R-2 for Otake and then R-186 for the Yasaka Dam. After passing the dam, drive 8 km further on R-186 and take R-289 for 4 km. At the T corner placed the sign board above, turn to the left for Hiroshima-Nishi CC. Total distance from MCAS to HNCC is about 40 km.
