1805 Marines battle against Barbary pirates in protection of the USS Philadelphia, inspiring the lyric “Shores of Tripoli” in the Battle of Derna in 1805.
1868 Marines adopt the emblem “eagle, globe, and anchor.” The eagle represents our great nation, the globe signifies the Marines’ global presence, and the anchor exemplifies naval heritage.

Uniforms of the Marine Corps 1775 The first Marines wore green coats with white lapels, cuffs, and coat linings with a high leather collar to protect the neck from swords and to keep the head held high. The original “Leatherneck.”
1798 A blue uniform with red trimmings replaced the green. Blue references the Marine Corps’ Naval heritage, and red being the color John Paul Jones’ Marines wore during the Revolutionary War.
1804 Buttons using an eagle and anchor emblem (based on the fouled anchor device used in 1776) were added to the dress uniform.
1805 Marine Corps Officers carry the Mameluke Sword, the sword given to Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon by a Mameluke chieftain. Lt. O’Bannon and his Marines marched across the North African desert to rid the “shores of Tripoli” of pirates.

1834 Uniforms briefly revert to green and white.
1847 Officers, Staff Noncommissioned Officers, and Noncommissioned Officers wear a scarlet red stripe on their dress blue trousers to commemorate the courage of the men who fought in the Battle of Chapultepec in September of 1847.
1849 The blue and red uniform returns for good. This is the basis of the modern dress blues.
1859 The NCO Sword is carried by both Noncommissioned Officers and Staff Noncommissioned Officers, and is used for ceremonial purposes. The NCO Sword was bestowed to NCOs and SNCOs by Commandant Colonel John Harris in 1859. The quatrefoil (a cross-shaped braid worn on the top of an officer’s cover) is another tradition that began pre-Civil War.

1861 A new, simplified version of the dress uniform is introduced into Marine Corps attire. The full dress uniform becomes reserved for formal occasions.
1898 A more modern cut is chosen, closely resembling the uniforms worn today.
1916 Identification tags (dog tags) are officially authorized as part of the Marines’ uniform. A service uniform is added to Marine Corps attire as a replacement for the “undress” uniform introduced in 1861-1865. The forest-green service uniform became standard for field and combat.

1926 Some updates to the Service Uniform included a flat-rolled collar as opposed to the traditional upright version.
1942 Camouflage patterns are experimented with for use in battle uniforms.
1982 The desert battle dress uniform is introduced.
2000 The Marine pattern camouflage (MARPAT) replaces the desert battle dress uniform.
2002 MARPAT Combat Utility is approved by the Commandant. This order also allowed Marines to wear boots made with the rough leather out, reducing up-keep.

Origins of the Birthday Ball The annual Marine Corps Ball has come a long way from the elaborate galas we have come to know. In 1921, Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune declared by Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, that every year on November 10, this order must be read to all Marines. Order 47, Series 1921 included the history, mission, and traditions of the Marine Corps. Eventually, the annual tradition of recognizing the history and traditions through the order evolved into various forms of celebration. Dances, battle reenactments, and ceremonies commemorating the occasion lead the way for the first “formal” Birthday Ball in Philadelphia, 1925. Distinguished Guests including the Commandant, Secretary of War, and other prominent individuals observed the dedication of a memorial at Tun Tavern, the origin of the Marine Corps, followed by festivities at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel.

Traditions & Ceremony In 1952, the emergence of time-honored Marine Corps Ball traditions began with establishing the cake-cutting ceremony where the first piece of cake is presented to the Guest of Honor, the second piece to the oldest Marine, and the third piece to the youngest Marine in attendance. This ceremony is meant to signify the passing of tradition from one generation to the next.

Today’s Marine Corps Ball ceremonies also include the presenting of arms, marching on and posting of the colors, and the reading of Gen. Lejeune’s Birthday Message, along with the Commandant’s Message. A POW/MIA table is present as a memorial to the fallen or missing in action. These traditions have evolved and grown over time, serving as a parallel for the evolution of the Marine Corps.

MARINES & THE MARINE CORPS BALL Leading up to the Marine Corps Ball, we hit the street to talk to the community about their service and what the Marine Corps Ball means to them. The anticipation is palpable. There is a collective excitement as we near the event to come together to celebrate the birthday of the Marine Corps.

It’s on the Marine Corps birthday. It’s about tradition. Everyone comes together, you hang out with other ranks. You’re able to just communicate better and get along with everyone and remember why you joined.

Staff Sergeant Boucher 10 Years of Service What made you decide to join the Marine Corps? Well, when I found out my dreams of being a Power Ranger weren’t going to work out for me because they’re not real, I guess the next best thing, honestly for me, was being a Marine. I wanted to join a service and do something physically challenging. After being told so many times you can’t do something, you finally take the challenge, and you prove to everybody else, and not only everybody else, but yourself, that you can. It’s just an accomplishment that you want to do for your life, and I’ve done it and have been enjoying it ever since.

Sergeant Hinnant 6 Years of Service What made you decide to join the Marine Corps? I just wanted new opportunities. I wanted a change of my lifestyle.
Why is the Marine Corps Ball significant to you? It’s a remembrance of where we came from, but also, it’s taking that step back to realize everything we’ve done as Marines. It’s not my birthday or somebody else’s, just as an organization and as an entirety. It’s just a day where we sit back and just remember everything we’ve done, but also just celebrate the fact that we’re here and all the amazing things that we’re going to continue to do.

Corporal Spann 3.5 Years of Service What made you decide to join the Marine Corps? I have a bloodline of Marine Corps. My dad, he was a 30-year retiree for the Marine Corps, retired as a Major. And my two brothers were in the Marine Corps as well.
Why is the Marine Corps Ball significant to you? The Marine Corps Ball is significant to me because other than the past, which is very important, but I think it’s pretty much the one time of the year where all the Marines can get together and have fun and bond together in some unit cohesion.

Staff Sergeant Gonyea 11 Years of Service What made you decide to join the Marine Corps? I didn’t want to go to college. I got into all of the colleges I wanted to; didn’t want to go to college. I wanted to serve my country, and it looked like the best branch for me.
Why is the Marine Corps Ball significant to you? The Marine Corps Ball is significant to me because we are celebrating Marines past, present, and future per se. To me, that’s very important to come together. We don’t normally get to come together like that, so that’s why it’s important to myself.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
THE MAKING OF THE MARINE CORPS BALL Robert Rudolph, MCCS Director of Food and Hospitality, takes us behind the scenes on the overall planning and transformation of the IronWorks facility for the Marine Corps Ball.
How early does the team start to plan the Marine Corps Ball? Planning for the Marine Corps Ball normally starts in February with the planning of the menu and preparations for the food tasting in June. For the food tasting each command is given a certain number of quotes for their units to participate in the event. We allow a group of 25 tasters for the event, personnel are selected by the Unit Sergeants Major for attendance. This year it was agreed that since we did not have a ball last year that we would use the same menu.
It is very difficult to explain in words how this transformation works but it does and we receive compliments every year from newcomers to the air station.
22
It is also around this time that a decision must be made on the memento so that it can be ordered and received on time. The process of selecting mementos is normally done by the Sergeant Major with feedback from their units. The normal process is to hold a meeting, select a few ideas, and then reach out for votes from the commands, and then everyone that purchases a ticket receives the same ball memento.
