IWACON? This month's Preview reintroduces a few familiar faces for those who have been here since 2019. In October 2019, MCCS Iwakuni hosted the inaugural multi-cultural comic convention, IWACON, which introduced Iwakuni to a few fan-crazed characters. This month's article, Trick or Treat, features the face of IWACON, RONbot (Robotically Operated Nuisance). MCCS Iwakuni would also like to reintroduce MECHA MUKADE and Doki Doki Kaiju, two of our giant-sized IWACON characters that would probably throw catastrophic tantrums if we didn't include them too.

MEcha Mukade MECHA MUKADE first appeared in the Misadventures of RONbot, May 2019 issue of the Preview as RONbot's nemesis. RONbot and MECHA MUKADE's feud became serious after MM stole all of RONbot's coins at the arcade.

Doki Doki Kaiju DOKI DOKI KAIJU first appeared in the Misadventures of RONbot, July 2019 issue of the Preview as the star of RONbot's favorite manga. RONbot later saw DD Kaiju's hit movie, Doki Doki Kaiju takes New York. In the Misadventures of RONbot, August 2019 issue, before meeting her at IWACON in the September Special Edition Preview, MCCS goes to IWACON.

Story: 1 Angelica Brister Shortly after my father died in his sleep, I started having dreams of a witch trying to suffocate me. Sleep paralysis is what my mother called it. I slept with a sharp pencil one night to give myself a sense of protection. The next morning, my mother was in the kitchen when I noticed something odd. It wasn’t the sleeping pills she had stashed behind the tea kettle but the lead-like stab wound in her hand.

OBAKE, YuREI, — YoKAI, OH MY! Moving to Japan is a thrilling adventure. Unfortunately, most people will never have the opportunity to live abroad in a country rich with ancient history, traditions, and folklore. So, in the spirit of the season (pun intended), let’s explore some of the intriguing yōkai, or ghosts, apparitions, or specters, that stem from ancient Japanese folklore.

Speaking of stemming from something, rokurokubi are yōkai that appear as humans who, when asleep, their heads detach from their bodies and remain connected by a long, stretched-out string usually depicted as a neck.

The condition of rokurokubi is said to be a result of a curse. There are numerous stories in written and oral history over the centuries of rokurokubi and their plight.

Interview with a Fear Volunteer Corporal Nicholas I. Muñoz Why did you decide to volunteer for the SMP Haunted House? I decided to come back and volunteer for the Haunted House again this year because last year was so much fun. As an escort, I was able to see things that were great and things that we could build upon to make this year's the most memorable. Tell us about the planning and brainstorming process. Who is involved? In all honesty, it's my fellow volunteers. We started planning as early as June, where the theme (Japanese urban legends and horror stories) was decided. Since then, as more people have been willing to donate their time and ideas, what we envision becomes clearer and clearer by the day. What is your favorite part about participating in this event? My favorite part of the Haunted House is the overall excitement that comes with it. Not only the excitement in the cast and crew by seeing what they've worked so hard on come to life, but also the excitement of the patrons who have no idea what they're in for before stepping in.

have taken an hour or

going year-round?

When I started creating, I could only work on one project, but now I work on three or four projects at once Sometimes glue or paint needs to dry, and it is convenient to switch over and keep working.

How-To: Costume Construction for your Furry Friend

1

To start, you have to determine what you would like to make and select the materials you would like to use. In this case, I am using EVA foam and foam floor mats.

Once you know what you are making, you can use reference photos, if available, to see the prop's size and shape. Draw the shape out on a piece of paper and test fit it to ensure that you make everything the correct size.

2

A great thing about making costumes is that usually, the sides are the same, so make one side and flip it over to make the other symmetrical.

M C C S I WA K U N I .C O M | O C TO B E R 2 0 2 1

23

3

Once everything is checked for size, use a marker to transfer the design to the foam. When all pieces are traced, roughly cut out the shapes to make them easier to manage.

Take an Exacto knife and cut along the edges of the shapes. Once all of the pieces are cut out, lay them out to ensure that you have all the parts you need.

5

4

Now it is time to start gluing. Contact cement is the easiest to connect any foam section; remember to work in a well-ventilated area. If you don't want to use contact cement, hot glue or super glue can be a stand-in. Once the glue is applied to both sides, give it about 10 minutes to dry and connect the pieces. Straight pieces are the easiest to secure. If there are curves, bend the items beforehand to help with the gluing.

24

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

6

Once everything is glued together, give it a few hours to dry, and then you are ready for sealing and painting. There are many ways to seal foam, but my favorite is PVA glue (Elmer's school glue) mixed with water.

7

The last step is painting. A quick way to complete your painting is by using spray paint. Take a few minutes to tape off any areas you don't want to be painted, and then give it a spray.

Now that everything is ready, you are prepared for the best part, putting on the costume and sharing it on social media. Take your best selfie and share it with everyone.
