TOO MANY
MCAS Iwakuni is a close-knit community. Our community ties are what bind us and keep us strong together, especially when facing difficult situations. For example, every September, we observe Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month as suicide impacts everyone.
4
P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I
This month, take the time to reflect. Has suicide impacted you? Have you considered what you would do if someone you knew was struggling? Do you know how to recognize the signs that someone is struggling? Or, are you contributing to the stigma by judging the behaviors or challenges of others around you? Thinking about these things can be difficult, but it is necessary for the community-based approach to prevention. This edition of the Preview is dedicated to those we’ve lost, to those who are struggling, to those who have lost a loved one, and to all of us who have the ability to help impart change.

To even have suicidal thoughts is such an intense and deep pain that to have someone else essentially say, "I see you, and I hear your pain," can give that person a little hope that they are not entirely alone. It allows the person to begin talking about that pain, whether to you or someone else.
DEFINING STAGES, SIGNS, & SYMPTOM
Joseph Johnson, Community Counselor with the Community Counseling Program, discusses the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms to help prevent suicide.
It may seem like suicide is a way to end your pain or stop the hurt. It may seem like there's no way out. One of the things we like to do is explore some of the ways that we can help you intervene with the hurt or the pain that you're experiencing. There are steps that you can take to regain a happy and fulfilled life. I'd like to go over some signs and symptoms that you can recognize to help yourself or help others.
We want you to know that you're not alone in this. The first step is always hard, but it gets better. - Joseph Johnson

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS
Andrew Rigdon, Community Counselor, Community Counseling Program, takes us through some of the contributing factors that often lead to suicide.
There are a lot of contributing factors that get a number of people to start to have suicidal thoughts or to want to act on those thoughts. If we look at several different factors, then we'll get a lot better at understanding what might be going on for people. When these factors couple with each other, they don't happen in isolation, then that is when it really makes it more dangerous for the person.
Risk Factors and Stressors Suicide impacts everyone, but some risk factors and stressors are common among those with suicidal ideations. Stressful life events play a significant role in triggering thoughts of suicide. These events may include becoming a victim of abuse, divorcing a spouse, or experiencing financial trouble.

What should I do if I’m worried about someone I love? If you know someone who is struggling or maybe considering suicide, it can be stressful and overwhelming. You may question your intuition or wonder whether it is your place to get involved. You might worry that bringing it up could make matters worse or encourage dangerous behavior. You might not know the right words to say. However, it is essential to remember that your actions could be the first step to saving their life.

SEEKING HELP DOESN'T RUIN CAREERS. IT'S THE INCIDENTS THAT OCCUR BECAUSE WE DON'T SEEK HELP THAT INTERFERES. - Diane Pospisil-Kinney
Have you experienced working with a client who admitted it was a stigma holding them back from coming forward and asking for help? How did that client break through? Absolutely. Breakthroughs happen in several ways. One way has simply been while the client was engaged in counseling and realized for themselves partway through that nothing terrible happened in their career. Another breakthrough often occurs when we acknowledge with the client that if they could have "fixed" everything, they would have and never would have needed counseling. It isn't a matter of weakness because it takes real strength to keep moving forward every day struggling with these issues.

Focus on You We all need to carve out time for ourselves. However, life can be stressful, and finding ways to alleviate that stress, or practicing self-care, can help protect your physical and mental health. Implementing these practices can also reduce your risk for injury and give you more energy overall.
Focus on What You Enjoy Most importantly, self-care must be something you enjoy. Consider what brings you happiness or helps you relax and recharge. It could be anything from working out, having an at-home spa night with a bath bomb and a scented candle, attending a yoga class, meditating, reading, journaling, or even getting some much-needed rest. When practicing self-care, be sure to acknowledge that you are taking the time to take care of yourself.
Focus on Life Suicide affects all of us. Its devastating impact ripples through families, friends, schools, workplaces, and communities. But, having an awareness of the signs, potential risks, how to engage our loved ones, and resources available has the power to save lives.

From MCAS, take R-2 for Otake and then R-186 for the Yasaka Dam. After passing the dam, drive 8 km further on R-186 and take R-289 for 4 km. At the T corner placed the sign board above, turn to the left for Hiroshima-Nishi CC. Total distance from MCAS to HNCC is about 40 km.
