WHERE WERE YOU?

MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

" The Spring Bazaar was very cool! There was a nice mix of crafts and furniture pieces. I brought home washi eggs and jewelry, and my daughter got a kimono for her Barbie Doll plus one for her friend back in the states. I’d love to see more vendors next year."

"The 49th MCAS Iwakuni Marathon gave local Japanese and Americans an opportunity to come together for a fun event. Families of the runners were able to enjoy a beautiful afternoon cheering on their families and enjoying a little taste of America. As much as we enjoy learning from our friends, Japanese kids like to practice their English any chance they get. These two sisters enjoyed practicing their English with me and many others during the day’s events." - Angela Ryberg MCCS Youth Sports Coordinator

"I really enjoy volunteering at events like the

Month of the Military Child

Celebration due to the fact that you get to network with so many people. It's such a positive and good feeling when people know who you are because you volunteer and give back to the community. I enjoy seeing new faces and interacting with children. Volunteering is a way to get out and meet new people, especially since I'm so far from home. I enjoy volunteering for MCCS and they always have amazing and fun volunteer opportunities."

3 Most Overplayed

Karaoke Songs

by Aaron Roman, Community Writer Normally I would begin an article such as this with a light and comedic lead into the topic at hand, but it’s time to get serious. We have a problem that I feel I must address: karaoke songs that are grossly overplayed. Don’t get me wrong, karaoke is a great deal of fun, but if we continue picking the same five songs out of a the millions available then we’re just ruining it for everyone. Is that the way we want our favorite tunes to go down? •

Don’t Stop Believing - Journey Let’s face it, we’ve stopped believing.

Sweet Child of Mine - Guns and Roses Axl Rose’s voice may sound like a hyena scratching its name on a chalkboard, but it works for Guns and Roses’ music. What doesn’t work is twenty grown men and women trying to simultaneously replicate that raspy voice at both different keys and tempos.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen Bohemian Rhapsody is possibly one of the greatest songs to sing with a group. Unless you’re going to wow us with the tonal precision of a barbershop quartet with accompanying accurate air guitar solos, best to leave it for a special moment.

OPEN 24/7 253-3585

SMP COMMITTEE MEETING

ARCHERY TRIP

Transportation and entry to car show is Free. After the car show we will go to the Fresta Mall area for some free time. Sign up at the Marine Lounge or the Hornet’s Nest.

MAY 25, 7-9 PM Lip sync the night away! Enter our Karaoke / Lip Sync Competition! Registration begins at 6:30 PM, competition starts at 7 PM. First place winner receives a $50 MCX gift card, and second place $25 MCX gift card. Snacks and beverages will be served throughout the event.

OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT

MAY 30, 7-9 PM The Hornet’s Nest is hosting its One-on-One Air Hockey Tournament. Best two out of three matches for 10 points. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place winners. Snacks and beverages will be served throughout the event.

CULTURAL ADAPTATION § 253-6165

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

Call Her...

Sensei by Jessica McFarlane, Public Affairs Specialist

Kikuko Shinjo never realized the impact that a grain of

rice could have on the relationship between Iwakuni’s American and Japanese communities. Ten years ago, she suggested that MCCS' Cultural Adaptation take servicemembers and their families to plant rice at a local Iwakuni farm. She wondered if they would enjoy experiencing such a typical part of Japanese life.

The Americans loved it. Shinjo-san, or “Sensei” as her friends call her, went on to spend the next decade shaping the Cultural Adaptation program into what it is today.

After one of her former Girl Scouts grew up and started working for MCCS, Shinjo-san had the idea of a new way that she could volunteer for the community. As a scout leader, she had spent the last 50 years working with Iwakuni Boy and Girl Scouts. Now, she wanted to focus her efforts on fostering relations between the American and Japanese. It was her hope that by exchanging culture, the experiences could bring the on and off-base communities together.

Akie Fujimoto, former cultural adaptation specialist, said that Shinjo-san was full of passion for teaching Iwakuni history and culture. “When we were planning, we never heard her saying ‘I can't.’” Shinjo-san convinced a local business to open their doors to Americans, and as the liaison for the Japanese, she began coordinating classes such as kimono, calligraphy, and origami. She also planned Japanese cultural events such as curry cooking, rice planting, and rice harvesting.

“She came up with many

different ideas—one after another!” shared Taeko Yokoyama, who worked with her at Youth Cultural Adaptation.

In the last ten years, the Cultural Adaptation programs offered at the Youth and Teen Center and Library have affected the lives of thousands of servicemembers and their families. Shinjo-san’s dedication has introduced the American community to local cultural experiences that might otherwise be out of reach. “It's countless how many people could have the positive impact on their life because of how she cares and puts things into practice for them,” said Taeko Yokoyama.

When asked why has she devoted her golden years to volunteering with Americans, Shinjo-san says "the past is not important to (her), but what is important to (her) is that the people who share this city are friends." While it may be easier to repeat the same types of successful programs and trips year after year, Shinjo-san is always moving forward. Although now 89 and residing in a local elderly care home, she still spends her days folding origami and brainstorming new cultural enrichment activities for Americans.

When asked what her favorite event has been, she chooses not to focus on the past. Instead, she describes an event that she is currently working on with Iwakuni City. The new program will offer the opportunity for American families to greet visitors at the Kintai Bridge. She shows the origami cards she has made for the American children to hand out. Shinjo-san "hopes that visitors from throughout Japan will see that the American military is part of Iwakuni City."

Being one of MCCS Iwakuni’s most popular programs, Cultural Adaptation classes and trips often fill up early with a wait list. Shinjosan hopes that the base community will continue to take the opportunities to get off base and have new experiences. “I will keep trying to come up with new activities as long as Americans are willing to try new things.”

Opportunity is

knocking (LOUDLY!) by Marie Lewis, Personal & Professional Development Program Advisor

May is the cusp of PCS season and the start of many families transitioning in and out of Iwakuni. Such an abundance of new people is headed this way that the demand for civilian employees to support Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni’s increasing population is exploding—to the tune of dozens of job announcements posted daily online. I know this because it’s my job; I check for new vacancy listings in Iwakuni like you check Facebook. If you have a birthday in May, you may know that your birthstone, the emerald, symbolizes success. What better way to find success in your Iwakuni home than by embracing the new employment opportunities that abound? Enter the Family Member Employment Assistance Program. This is the program to jump into if you’re looking for work in Iwakuni (and if you’re PCSing from here or transitioning out of the military!) We offer three, 3-hour workshops specifically designed to help you land the best possible position:

Federal Job Search Strategies Once upon a time, I thought it was impossible to get my foot in the door working for the federal government. Like many spouses, I thought I had to “know someone” to even be considered. Wrong! While networking is important, it’s not all you need. You may have an amazing skill set, but you may be missing the mark when it comes to knowing how to effectively market yourself and apply for federal positions. In this class, we walk you through the process of identifying your eligibility for federal positions, explain the maze of spousal and veterans’ preference categories, and give you the information you need to maximize your chances of making it through the screening process. I took this class in Okinawa, and it was the first step that led to my eventual hire as a GS employee. Success!

every tiny detail of what needs to go in your résumé, what you need to leave out, and how to write descriptions of your accomplishments that will knock prospective employers’ socks off.

Interviewing Skills If you’re still reading, you’ve made it to the most important (and least attended) class. Why? The ugly truth is that most of us think we’re better at interviewing than we actually are. The problem is that we realize it too late (“If only I’d said this instead of that…”). Sound familiar? What’s the point of all that job searching and résumé writing if you’re not going to prepare yourself for the interview? This is the make-or-break moment in landing that coveted position. We are here to help keep you from walking out of the interview with thoughts of “coulda, shoulda, woulda,” and instead give you the tools to be your most confident, best self. We will explain the different types of interviews you may encounter, how to dress appropriately, and how to answer difficult questions, including the dreaded, “Tell us about yourself.” We will also go over how to respond to illegal questions and how to follow up after the interview has ended. By the time you get through this class, you won’t be dreading anything about the interview process! We offer Federal Job Search Strategies, Build a Better Résumé, and Interviewing Skills workshops every month. Check the Personal & Professional Development page in this issue of the Preview to see the May class times, and call 253-6439 or 253-6161 to sign up. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by!

Build a Better Résumé Let me be clear: I once thought I was more likely to ride a unicorn into outer space than obtain a job working for the federal government. I failed to recognize that I was my biggest obstacle. I had my career before I married a Marine; I thought I already knew how to write a résumé. What could these people teach me that I didn’t already know? Lots, it turned out. Once I swallowed my pride and went to one of these classes, I realized how little I knew about résumé writing. Sure, I was an expert at résumé writing for my small, niche industry, but not for the kind of employers I was pursuing as a military spouse. This class is all about teaching you how to identify the right kind of résumé to use for your specific situation and for your specific career goals. We go over M C C S I WA K U N I . C O M |

History of

iwakuni,

japan by Quentin Henry, Community Writer

Upon receiving orders to Japan, you may have pictured white, sandy beaches, palm trees, and tropical sceneries. After further review, you realize that you weren’t going to the more common duty stations located in Okinawa, Japan, but to the mainland itself aboard Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. You did what any normal person would do and looked online. You found images of U.S. aviation aircraft, an ancient Japanese castle, and a peculiarly arched bridge structure with a river flowing beneath. As intriguing a place this city may be, what is the history behind it? Why place a Marine Corps Air Station in such a location?

Known as the

logs and debris stuck between them, creating a strong enough water pressure to wash them away.

Iwakuni was formed by Lord Hiroie Kikkawa, who was banished to the location after supporting a defeated leader of the Western Army, Terumoto Mori, during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Following the battle, Hiroie Kikkawa began constructing structures to maintain stability throughout the land.

After decades of unsuccessful bridges, Iwakuni's third lord, Hiroyoshi Kikkawa, took charge of his father’s project. His mission? Work with engineers to design a more durable bridge. Legend has it, inspiration struck Hiroyoshi Kikkawa while he was reading a book “Seiko Yuran-shi.” In this book, he saw illustrations of arched bridges connecting islands.

Lord Kikkawa built his residence and administration offices at the base of the mountain in 1602. In 1608, he directed the construction of the watch tower (the castle atop the mountain). He chose Mt. Yokoyama for its high vantage point and the natural moat created by the Nishiki River, which surrounded three-fourths of the castle. Together, this would further protect the castle lookout from battle.

This insight proved useful in the final construction of the arched concept Kintai Bridge in October of 1673. Because of the width of the river, multiple arches are crucial, and for some time, the arches proved to be a standing success. After only eight short months, it succumbed to yet another flood due to lack of durability at the base of one of its stone pillars. Reconstruction began shortly after and included the placing of flag stones around the stone piers.

“Castle Town of the Iwakuni Domain,”

After only seven years, Kikkawa was ordered to tear down Iwakuni Castle because of the new “One Province, One Castle Law.” (Today’s Iwakuni Castle was reconstructed in 1962). The idea for the bridge was born from the need for samurai and noble citizens to cross the Nishiki River. Commoners such as merchants commuted via ferry boats which could be dangerous. However, the evolution of the Kintaikyo wasn’t so simple. Heavy flood waters, strong storms, and a loose, sandy riverbed challenged the bridge's engineers. Early versions of the bridge featured supporting pillars. However, during floods,

20

The bridge stood for nearly three long centuries before Typhoon Kijiya destroyed it in September 1950. Reconstruction of the wooden arches finished in January 1953, and continuous renovations have maintained the bridge over the decades.

This is the bridge we know today,

and it remains one of the most

famous Japanese landmarks.

History of MCAS Iwakuni In hopes of establishing a naval base, the Japanese government purchased a part of the Kawashimo delta (nearly 2,000 acres) in 1938. In 1940, the Japanese commissioned the new base, and World War II started shortly after. In 1943, Etajima Naval Academy housed approximately 1,000 Japanese Cadets. The base has a colorful history of changing hands, occupied over the years by the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. Among the first allies to reach Iwakuni were a group of U.S. Marines who brought along documents to sign leading to the end of the conflict in the area. The base would later serve as a refueling point for jets in 1950 when the Korean Conflict started, dubbing the base as the “Gateway to Korea.” Command changed to the U.S. Air Force in April of 1952, the U.S. Navy in 1954, followed by the U.S. Marines in 1958. In 1958, this piece of land was designated MCAS Iwakuni.

Kintai Bridge Fun Facts •

Kintai means woven gold sash and is a golden belt worn on top of the obi belt.

Low and middle-ranking samurai and commoners such as merchants lived in the area across the river, opposite the castle.

Many commoners would bribe the guards for access on the bridge (but you didn’t hear that from us).

MCCS CHAT

Easy Booking Let us help you with:  Hotel & Restaurant Reservations  JCI Registration  Beauty Salon Appointments  Basic Translation Services

MCCS Chat is a program in which MCCS representatives visit various MCCS facilities to speak one-on-one with the community. These sessions offer the community the opportunity to get immediate answers to their MCCS questions. But more importantly, MCCS can get ideas and suggestions directly from the community that can help MCCS improve its programs and facilities.

Each month, we will include your questions here. We hope that you enjoy reading our responses and watching your suggestions take motion. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us and helping us continually improve!

(Translator accompaniment is dependent upon availability)

090-2866-7206 easybooking@outlook.jp www.facebook.com/easybooking2016

During our MCCS Chat sessions, MCCS received many questions and comments on the free Wi-Fi service provided at various facilities on the Air Station. We have heard comments ranging from speed to poor connectivity to increase location availability. The following should clarify some points. The current Wi-Fi service found in MCCS facilities is a contracted service between Headquarters Marine Corps and a company formally known as Net Near U, now called ViaSat. Wi-Fi is available in Appropriated Funded facilities (Category A & B), such as Semper Fit and Marine & Family Programs facilities, and cannot be in revenue generating facilities such as the MCX. Crossroads Food Court is an exception since the Wi-Fi range is shared with the Marine Lounge (Category A) and ITT (Category B). The ViaSat contract has reached its end and is currently in a one year extension while HQMC solicits bids for a replacement service for all Marine Corps installations. With a new proposed contract in the works, MCCS no longer has the option to add or modify any of the existing active Wi-Fi hotspots. The only option still available is any removal of current access points and/or service termination. The replacement service will be directed to locations that will best serve the Marines, using newer Wi-Fi equipment and technology to be more resilient to heavy traffic situations and provide more bandwidth where possible.

Golden Week

the Japanese Spring Vacation

by Jenna West, Community Writer

The Japanese, hard-working and (let’s be honest) hard-partying, are ever attuned to the seasons. Since paid vacation days are rather scant compared to most other countries, in Japan four holidays are cribbed together with a day or two of one’s own vacation time to create an entire week. Indeed, this year, when you add in May 7 and 8, they can get ten straight days of time off with only two annual leave days sacrificed. During this period, the entire country pretty much shuts down. This translates into closed government offices, businesses and schools, frenetic traveling activity, overbearingly crowded trains, hotels, resorts, shopping malls and restaurants … and, of course, hiked-up prices. You have been warned.

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

Here’s how Golden Week

shapes up this year:

April 29 – Shōwa Day (showa no hi) (used to be

Greenery Day), the birthday of former Emperor Hirohito

April 30 – Saturday May 1 – Sunday May 2 – a “compensation” day May 3 – Constitution Memorial Day, kenpou kinen bi May 4 – currently, Greenery Day (midori no hi) May 5 – Children’s Day (kodomo no hi), formerly Boys’ Day

May 6 – another “compensation” day May 7 – Saturday May 8 – Sunday In 2016, travel activity is anticipated to peak on April 29 and May 3 with people leaving the large urban centers, and again on May 1, 5, and 8 when they return home. Meanwhile, for the trivia buffs: Emperor Hirohito (reigned 1926 – 1989) was known as the Shōwa Emperor Emperor Akihito (1989 – present) is known as the Heisei Emperor The current Emperor’s birthday is celebrated on December 23. When Crown Prince Naruhito ascends to the Throne, the holiday will be moved to February 23. In Japan, years are reckoned by the current Emperor’s reign – thus, this year, 2016, is designated as Heisei 28. The author was born in 1949, which was Shōwa 24.

Now to the holiday week itself: Shōwa Day, April 29, marks the anniversary of the former Emperor Hirohito’s birthday. Traditionally, upon an Emperor’s death, the anniversary of his birthday is discarded and the official holiday is transferred to the current Emperor’s birthday. So, April 29 was renamed “Greenery Day”, in honor of his love for nature. The pragmatic Japanese, looking to get the longest possible vacation out of the deal, elected to restore the Emperor’s birthday and move “Greenery Day” to May 4, so as to fill a gap in that week. Constitution Remembrance Day commemorates the adoption of the Post-WWII Japanese Constitution. The document was promulgated on November 3, 1946, and went into effect on May 3, 1947. It is well worth reading and explains a great deal about the Japanese view of the nation and its place on the world stage. Here is an excerpt from the Preamble: We, the Japanese people, desire peace for all time and are deeply conscious of the high ideals controlling human relationship, and we have determined to preserve our security and existence, trusting in the justice and faith of the peaceloving peoples of the world. Greenery Day – this holiday originally fell on April 29, but as explained above was moved to May 4 to help create an unbroken string of holidays. Children’s Day, May 5 – this dates back to the 7th century as Boys’ Day and marks the “official” end of Golden Week. Families display elaborate samurai armor sets and fly koinobori – the colorful carp streamers (similar to a wind sock) you see outside homes around this time. These are usually topped with a metallic ornament, and the topmost banner displays the family crest. Traditionally, one carp was flown for each boy in the family, but in 1948, it was changed to Children’s Day. As a result, all children are now represented. The carp is a strong, long-lived fish which Chinese legend holds once swam upstream to become a dragon, and symbolizes the family’s wishes for their sons to become robust and successful. “Compensation Days,” May 2 and 6 are not official holidays. Workers must use their annual leave if they want to take off, but using up two days to get ten days off is still deemed a bargain.

May 5 is also “Friendship Day”,

the day that MCAS Iwakuni opens its gates to welcome our host nation neighbors aboard to see what we’re all about. If you’ve never experienced one before, be sure not to miss this special , 40th anniversary celebration.
