KIDS RUN THE NATION by Andrea Aguirre, MPH, CTTS, CHES
R
Road Runners Club of America
Engaging in this particular sport at an early age is especially important for developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle over a lifetime.
Youth Running
unning is a sport for all ages and other than a pair of good running shoes, little equipment is needed to enjoy strides over pavement, a track or anywhere else your feet will take you.
In 1986, the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) launched its children’s running program due to the growing concern for children’s health status in the United States. The program was developed by experts, including an Olympic marathoner, and has been a sought-after resource for several decades. In 2008, the RRCA revised the program and it’s currently known as the Kids Run the Nation Program. The Kids Run the Nation Program is based on the physical activity goals set by the United States Department of Agriculture, which include: establishing healthy eating and regular exercise habits, reducing childhood obesity and preventing lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Since running lowers blood pressure, keeps the lungs strong and powerful and provides large muscle exercise which helps keep the cardio system efficient and strong, it is an important activity to keep the children in the MCAS Iwakuni community healthy. MCCS Semper Fit Health Promotions recently received a grant from the Road Runners Club of America to implement the first Kids Run the Nation Program aboard MCAS Iwakuni. The program will occur in two sessions. The first session will be conducted from March 26 - May 30 and again from September 3 - November 7. Each session will include 10 weeks of instruction by Semper Fit staff with individual lessons held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 PM. In conclusion of each program session, there will be a fun run held by the MCCS Semper Fit Health Promotions Office to celebrate program completion. Youth ages 5-18 are eligible to participate and there will be no cost to participate in the program. Sign-ups begin March 1st for the first session and space is limited to the first 30 children whose parents/legal guardians register them for participation. Contact Health Promotions at 253-3696 to sign up or for any questions.

EFFECTIVE
RESUME WRITING FOR A GOVERNMENT JOB by Anthony Goodsell, Work and Family Life Consultant
You found a job opening with MCCS that is perfect for you. You know that you have the right skills and experience. The challenge now is to make sure that your résumé and application get you to the interview.
That one-page résumé that worked for you back in the states probably will not be enough. Government job applications have to comply with laws and regulations designed to ensure that only qualified applicants are considered. The staff can only consider what is written on your application and resume to determine if you meet those more detailed qualifications. Three to four page résumés are common. The key is to make sure your résumé is thorough, yet still easy for the reader to see that you are qualified. Here are some tips to help you create a more effective résumé or application for a government job.
IDENTIFY KEY Words & Requirements
The first step in creating a successful job application is to understand the requirements and how best to express your experience in words the employer will understand. Start by analyzing the application. Non-negotiable requirements will have phrases like, “must have,” “required,” or “if you have …, then ….” Look at the Minimum Qualifications section for the degree and/or length of time required as well as specific knowledge, skills and abilities. Identify the keywords and action verbs used in the Summary of Duties section. Using the language in the announcement to describe your experience makes it easier to see how that experience relates to the job you are applying for.
AVOID Fluff & Gimmicks
Visit CAREER RESOURCES in Bldg. 411, Rm. 201 or call 253-5762 for more information.
8
All applicants will tell an employer that they are a team player, work hard and are results oriented. Not all of them are being truthful. Statements about personality traits are fluff and are ignored by résumé readers. Too much fluff makes it seem that you have nothing concrete to talk about and weakens your résumé. Instead of telling the employer that you are results oriented, give an example where you produced outstanding results. Gimmicks such as unusual fonts, borders and colors do not enhance your résumé. They may attract attention, but will not improve your chances of being interviewed.
P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I
QUANTIFY & Show RESULTS
Use numbers to show the scope of your duties and results of your actions. Your goal is to show not only that you have experience doing the work, but also how much and how well you did the job. Results and recognition are ways to show how you did the job better than others, and how you will be a better candidate for the new job.
GUIDE the EYES
Use a layout that makes it easy for the résumé reviewer to see your qualifications. White space and bullets can make your résumé easy to read. Use limited highlighting such as bold or underlining to make important elements stick out, but don’t overdo it. If everything is highlighted, then nothing will stand out.
GET HELP
Have people review your résumé, but make sure they know what they are talking about. Friends and family may not have had experience with government applications. Even someone who has successfully applied to a job, has really only seen his or her own résumé. Someone who has hired people in the same line of work will have seen dozens or hundreds of résumés and would give better advice. The staff at Career Resources are professionals with years of experience in helping people improve their résumés and can help you make sure that your application is targeted to the job you are applying for.

2013 ANNUAL NAVY MARINE CORPS RELIEF SOCIETY
ACTIVE DUTY FUND DRIVE by Deanna O’Neal, NMCRS Iwakuni Director
F
ounded in 1904, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) is a private nonprofit charitable organization. It is sponsored by the Department of the Navy and operates nearly 250 offices with more than 3,600 trained volunteers and a small cadre of employees. The Society’s mission “is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational and other assistance to members of the Naval Service of the United States, eligible family members and survivors when in need; and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs.” Although sponsored by the Department of the Navy, the Society is a private non-profit organization whose programs are totally funded by charitable contributions. We do not receive any funding from the Department of Defense. The Society enjoys an active partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps and benefits extensively from active involvement of command structure within installations where the Society maintains a presence.
>> In 2012,
NMCRS Iwakuni was able to assist
214 clients with a total of $156,078.
The 2013 Active Duty
Fund Drive commences on
March 15
for MCAS Iwakuni.

DONATE TODAY
If you have any questions about this year’s Active Duty Fund Drive, please feel free to call 253-5311 or stop by the NMCRS Iwakuni office located in the Marine Memorial Chapel. www.nmcrsfunddrive.org NMCRSIwakuni
14
Once each year, The Active Duty Fund Drive gives you an opportunity to support fellow Marines, Sailors and their families. During the annual fund drive, contributions received from Sailors and Marines (both active duty and retired) translate into direct financial assistance to your Shipmates and fellow Marines – they do not get invested in the Society’s Reserve Fund. None of your donations are used to fund any of the Society’s education programs. 100% goes back to your fellow Sailor and Marine. Remember someday you may find yourself or your family in need. Is the Active Duty Fund Drive part of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)? No, NMCRS does not participate in the CFC for a number of reasons, but mainly because it is likely that the NMCRS share of donations could be less than what would otherwise be realized. So how does the Society use the funds donated? NMCRS provides need based financial assistance and other services to members of the Naval Services of the United States, and their eligible family members and survivors. We offer budget counseling, interest-free loans to family members for undergraduate education, Budget for Baby workshops to help expectant parents prepare for the arrival of a new family member, as well as interestfree loans and grants for emergency and unexpected financial needs to help you avoid high-interest financing. There are no fees for such assistance and NMCRS adheres to a strict client confidentiality policy. Through education and budget counseling, our goal is to ensure the service member and their family is prepared for the next unexpected crisis and can make informed and responsible financial decisions. By helping clients develop their own problem-solving capabilities, we encourage them to achieve financial selfsufficiency by living within their means. In 2012, NMCRS Iwakuni was able to assist 214 clients with a total of $156,078. The 2013 Active Duty Fund Drive commences on March 15 for MCAS Iwakuni. With the Society’s higher visibility, excellent reputation and new avenues of making a contribution this year (by credit card on the Society website and the Marine Corps on-line allotment registration at Marine On line, MOL); we are optimistic that the 2013 Active Duty Fund Drive will be extremely successful. After all, this is Sailors and Marines helping their Shipmates and fellow Marines.

The Benefits of
Working for
MCCS by Jaime Yasumatsu & Priscilla Wagoner
Employee Development Manager & Training Specialist
Arriving in Japan is intimidating at first. The adjustment curve can be steep especially if you have never been to a foreign country. There are so many decisions that must be made quickly. The biggest choice for some of us might be choosing between on base housing and living out in town. Finding a great place to work doesn’t have to add to the list of dilemmas because MCCS has a little something for everyone. When it comes to working for MCCS the sky’s the limit. Whether you’re seeking regular part time or a full time employment we want you to strive to be at your very best. Our goal is for MCCS employees to be motivated and empowered to succeed on the job. Motivation takes varying forms for different people so we incentivize our employees in a variety of ways. For those of you who love the prestige of being recognized for a job well done we have our Employee of the Quarter program. Peers and supervisors nominate employees from their division each quarter for outstanding performance of their duties. EOQ winners are recognized by their fellow MCCS co-workers at an awards ceremony as a reward for their contributions and NAF employees even receive a monetary gift ranging from $100 to $500 on their next paycheck. Building a better community starts with valuing MCCS employees by offering them the best training and educational opportunities available. Programs that enhance well being create a win for MCCS and a win for our employees. Every semester for example we offer tuition assistance to our regular full time and regular part time NAF employees who are interested in
furthering their educational pursuits. Tuition Assistance is offered once per semester with an allowance of up to $1,000. The college classes that you take can count toward an accredited degree program or they can simply be a way for you to enhance the skills that contribute to your success as an MCCS employee. If you thought your educational opportunities were limited to the colleges present on MCAS Iwakuni think again! Your school of choice is up to you. Financial aid however, may only be received from your institution or Tuition Assistance, not both. As part of our commitment to excellence MCCS consistently provides quality trainings that develop the abilities of all employees. PREP
PREVENTION AND RELATIONSHIP ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
by Neda Amaya, L.I.N.K.S. Trainer
When I think of Spring I think of new beginnings, fresh starts and time to reorganize our homes, lives and sometimes when necessary … relationships. One of the most important relationships to many of us is the one we have with our spouse. Unlike most aspects of our lives that we analyze and attempt to put in order, marriage is one of those facets that most people do not take the quality time to help grow and improve. I’m sure newlyweds reading this article are on cloud nine and feel their marriage is perfect. Well interestingly enough, research has shown that the first two years of marriage IS like being on cloud nine and yes, your marriage can feel perfect. The reason behind this phenomenon is that the endorphins in your brain are at an all time high… and chemically speaking your brain is happier. After two years these chemicals go back down to normal levels and that’s when the nitty gritty of marriage kicks in. For those of us who have been married for more than two years and have been nudged off cloud nine, we know it takes a tremendous amount of work, communication, trust and other ingredients to maintain not just a stable marriage, but a successful one. Spouses, we find time and energy to run our weekly (sometimes daily) commissary runs, take care of the kids, clean the house and have dinner ready before the infamous question is heard all around the world, “Moooommm (or Daaaadddd), I’m hunnnggryyy…what are we having for dinner???” How many of us actually take that same energy and apply it to our marriage? For all active duty service members reading this article, you strive to progress in your career, right? You go on dets, PMEs, MOS training, take on collateral duties and soak up any additional knowledge you can get just so you can display your hard work and progression on your Fitreps in hopes of eventually getting promoted. I’ll ask you the same question, is that same dedication, energy and work put into your marriage to ensure promotion in your love life? Couples should put in quality time and effort into their marriage to ensure communication is flowing and to keep that love between husband and wife fresh. I’ll even make it easy for you and suggest a few ways you can make this improvement actually happen. What if I were to offer you a trip to go on with your spouse outside of Iwakuni and stay at a nice hotel…for FREE? Would you take me up on that offer? Well guess what, Marine Corps Family Team Building and the Chapel work together to provide this free opportunity for couples who want to enhance their marriage; it’s called the CREDO Retreat. For parents who don’t like to leave their children with a sitter overnight, I have a solution for you all too. I can offer you an amazing 1-day marriage

workshop that could costs hundreds of dollars in the states but instead you get it for FREE. Staff at Marine Corps Family Team Building and the Chapel are certified to provide PREP (The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program). PREP is a fantastic workshop for new and seasoned married couples to learn about techniques to IMPROVE a marriage and how to PREVENT serious issues from arising. The best part of this workshop is that EVERYONE will learn something new, regardless of how long you’ve been married and regardless of whether you feel your marriage is perfect or needs help. The goal of PREP is to give you the tools you need to have to ensure a healthy and long lasting marriage. This workshop is interactive and provides the opportunity to work 1 on 1 with your spouse on activities and personality assessments.
Everyone will learn something new, MARCH 15 regardless of how long you’ve been 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Focusing on Flowers
It’s almost that time again, when pictures of sakura (cherry blossoms) start popping up all over your social website feed. You’ll see everything from a blurry mess of pink to single, dew-bedecked blossoms of such stunning beauty that they are worthy of hanging in an art gallery.
But how do you shoot them?
PREPARE
TRI-POD: Few people are steady enough to hand shoot tack-sharp pictures, especially if you’re doing macro (up-close) photography. Don’t forget to use the self-timer option to avoid camera shake from pressing the shutter button. BACKDROP: Bring a few sheets of large, white hardstock paper. You can use them to reflect light from below or to isolate your perfect blossom from the distraction of the other vegetation. For added drama add a black backdrop or other colors (like lime!) for a whimsical look. SPRAY BOTTLE: Don’t rely on spring weather; bring your own dew! Find a small, fine-mist pump and add a few drops of dish soap to the water. This will allow the water to form larger drops. For those with a good macro set-up, create as large a drop as you can manage on a blade of grass and put your sakura blossom behind it. If you’re very careful you might just be able to see your flower through the dew!
SHOOT
GET CLOSE: Not to say that you shouldn’t take landscape pictures of sakura trees or a group shot of friends in front of them, but for those gorgeous wall-worthy photographs, find that perfect specimen and focus on it. Pay attention to where the light is coming from as the pale colors of sakura might lose their definition in bright sunlight. BE AWARE: Pay attention to other sakura admirers. If someone is trying to get a family picture, stay out of frame until they’re done or maybe offer to take the picture for them! Anyone who has had their meticulously set-up composition photo-bombed knows the frustration this can cause.
Near the end of March is your brief window to capture images of Japan’s most beloved flower. Now go find The Shot!
Kindergarten Registration by Sarah Taylor Matthew C. Perry Elementary School Registrar
For some of us it is sending our first born and for someone of us it is sending our baby. Kindergarten is such a milestone in your child’s life and the anxiety associated with this milestone for you and your child can be stressful.

The Round-Up is for children who will start kindergarten this fall. Children must be 5 on or before September 1 for the 2013-2014 school year.
