WHO WE ARE

April is the Month of the Military Child: For those of us with past military history, we understand the unique lives these children experience including the daily challenges they face following their parents’ careers. Military children lead very different lives from civilian children growing up in mainstream USA. Most stateside children make friends and go to the same schools until the day they graduate, which provides lasting relationships and stability in their lives. For military children there is very little stability; every two to three years they are uprooted to different schools and from relations back home. I still remember how intimidating it was as a youngster walking into a new school and classroom with everyone staring at you. You basically have to start all over multiple times throughout your childhood. As we know, this is not just a change of schools; you are often dropped into a different country and culture. On many bases where children know who your parents are, you automatically find yourself in a sort of pecking order based upon your parents’ rank and what position of importance they hold on the base. My own children are very proud to say they were military brats; they have experienced more in their lives than most adults who may have never left their home state or even their home communities. Our military children give up a lot during their formative years; they are indeed unique and I am proud of them for hanging in there and supporting us during our careers. Please join me in celebrating our children with some of the activities we have planned for them in the month of April. The Family Care Branch (253-6454) celebrates our youth on April 6 with great activities, bouncy houses and several opportunities for the family to enjoy an afternoon in their honor. Join us in cheering on our young athletes as Youth Sports (253-3239) kicks off the Baseball and Softball season; the opening ceremony is April 20. We are proud of our military youth; they are our future. We have many other great activities planned for weekends in April: On April 6, Outdoor Recreation (253-3822) is taking a group hiking on Miyajima Island; April 14, Athletics (253-5654) hosts the Kintai Marathon; April 20-21, the Single Marine Program (253-3585) ventures to Osaka and Universal Studios and finally on April 26, Cultural Adaptation (253-6155) tours Yamaguchi Flower Land. If you are looking for more than a weekend getaway, ITT (253-4377) is heading to China April 10-14, visiting both Beijing and Shanghai. For those aspiring poets, the Library (253-3078) hosts Open Mic Night on April 18. The Library also offers a poetry contest throughout the month. We end the month honoring the behind-the-scenes individuals who give their time and effort to our community and are instrumental in the success of our many activities, our volunteers. Marine Corps Family Team Building (253-3754) hosts our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 26. Thank you to all of our many volunteers, our Iwakuni Community appreciates your efforts in building a better community.

wine review: Barefoot Cellars & Ariel Chardonnay

MCX APRIL WINE SPECIAL

BAREFOOT CELLARS Chardonnay has hints of green apples, peach, honey and vanilla that enhance the rich, buttery smooth finish. These tasting notes are from the wine makers’ unique formula and innate DNA taste buds that should not deter us wine enjoyers from appreciating if we cannot detect these notes. Everyone has a different level of sensory threshold. One person may or may not smell or taste fruit and another may or may not detect tree fruit such as peaches or green apples. Remember that enjoying wine is a journey that will always have us experimenting.

ARIEL Chardonnay is a non-alcoholic wine; an excellent choice for those of us who want to experience the popular white wine without the alcohol. In the future we will be seeing more wineries jumping on the bandwagon with this concept. This month is a perfect time to gather friends and blind taste these two wines. Do the wines differ when alcohol is void? Will you challenge your sensory threshold level?

Our Advertising Policy We try to have adequate stock of all advertised items. When out-of-stocks occur, we offer a substitute item of comparable value. VOLUNTEER CONTRIBUTIONS by Alexandra Patrocino, LifeSkills Trainer

MCAS Iwakuni

VOLUNTEERS in

2012

Numerous articles have been written about the benefits of volunteering, this article is different. Iwakuni volunteers make a difference in our close-knit community. What is the result of their volunteer efforts? How have our volunteers impacted the Air Station? There are so many amazing byproducts of our Iwakuni volunteers, many go unseen. Well, not any more. Below are some of the units and organizations whose volunteer contributions have made a lasting impact on those who are proud and honored to have benefitted from their service.

Did you know? We have approximately

900 community members who have donated a combined total of

38,000 hours towards volunteerism. Marine Corps Family Team Building

(MCFTB) Operation Comfort and Care volunteers received over 200 donations from the community and packaged 60 boxes to ship to service members in Afghanistan. In addition, MCFTB’s L.I.N.K.S. mentors have donated over 400 hours to help with L.I.N.K.S. for Marines, Spouses and Kids in 2012.

Navy Marine Corps Relief Society

(NMCRS) has served 218 individuals and provided $156,078 in interest-free loans and grants to Marines, Sailors and their families in Iwakuni. Over 99% of clients who come into NMCRS are assisted by a volunteer in some capacity.

CLC-36 volunteers have packaged over 200 goodie bags for Single Marines during the holiday season.

Boy Scout Troop 77 has five Single Marines who volunteer their time as mentors to younger scouts and demonstrate how the Scout Oath and Scout Law translate into Marine Corps values. Branch Health Clinic has a combined

total of 500 volunteer hours. Volunteers assist the Iwakuni community throughout Japan by volunteering their time at Akebono Orphanage, YMCA and the Kintai area.

Dental Clinic has 6 individuals who

have contributed 487 hours towards volunteerism.

Thrift Store has 120 volunteers who

have a combined total of 3,039 hours and have assisted the Boy/Cub/Girl Scouts, MC Perry PTO, MALS-12 Spouse Club and the Mainland Basketball Association.

The Girl Scouts has over 400

cumulative hours which includes volunteering at Tsuta Children's Home Orphanage and the Garden of Light Home.

Youth Cultural Program has 8

volunteers with a total of 38 hours.

Semper Fit has over 400 volunteers with combined efforts of 17,960 hours. Red Cross has over 30 volunteers who

contributed a cumulative total of 5,000 hours to the Iwakuni community.

MALS-12 has over 100 Marine/Sailor volunteers and 12 Family Readiness Advisor/Assistants who volunteered more than 2,900 hours.

Can you tell me where your tax refund went last year? by Bonnie Lewis, Personal Financial Manager

How about the year before that? If you can’t remember where your money went in the past, then make a change. Make this year’s tax refund count. Consider opening a Certificate of Deposit (CD) as a way to save for short term expenses and earn a higher rate of interest than your checking or savings account. A six month CD could provide the resources to buy school clothes and supplies. A nine month CD would give you money for Christmas shopping or travel next December. This year you’ll know where the money went, because you decided where to put it. If you find yourself digging out of debt with each year’s tax return consider coming in and using the free services of your Personal Financial Manager located in Bldg. 411, Rm. 201, to create a plan to live within your means. You will have money to meet your obligations and buy the things you need all year and you won’t have to budget your purchases according to your tax refund. Remember if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got. Your financial situation will not change on its own, you have to take some action and make changes in how you handle your money. Here are some steps to get you started.

Are you ready to get

your Hanami on this year?

Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, almost always meaning cherry blossoms ("sakura") or less often plum blossoms ("ume"). Japanese continue the tradition of hanami, gathering in great numbers wherever the flowering trees are found. Thousands of people fill parks to hold feasts under the flowering trees, sometimes these parties go on until late at night. Read a full Hanami article online, APRIL PREVIEW 2012, at www.mccsiwakuni.com/about-mccs/sponsorship-advertising/ preview-magazine/preview-2012

Hands on JAPANESE COOKING by Troy Guyer & Rachel McCandless

“Food is our

common ground, a universal experience.” - James Beard

Recently, we had the opportunity to join a Japanese Cooking Class offered through Cultural Adaptation Program from Information Referral and Relocation (IRR), it was a truly great experience. Everyone enjoyed learning how to make several traditional Japanese dishes and meeting new people. Ms. Akie Sumomogi, Cultural Adaptation Specialist was knowledgeable, friendly and willing to answer any and all questions. She was also a wonderful translator for our Japanese cooking instructor Ms. Sachiko Tamura. Sachiko’s name literally translates to “Happy Child”, and this was more than fitting as everything she showed us was done with a smile and the open manner of a child. The dish that we had the most fun creating was Yakisoba, a traditional pork, noodle and vegetable delight. Here is our adaptation of the recipe provided by Sachiko-san; it is a delicious, easy and quick meal using local soba noodles, lean pork and fresh vegetables. The cost to prepare this dish at home is less than 200 yen per portion and takes fewer than 15 minutes. It is surprisingly nutritious for how decadent it tastes, with loads of protein, B vitamins and nearly 50% of the daily value of vitamins A and C. If you use a nonstick pan and reduce the oil to one Tbsp, it is only 330 calories per serving. This dish will definitely become a regular in our kitchen. We hope you will enjoy making and eating your own Yakisoba as much as we did. Look for more fun Japanese Cooking Classes from Cultural Adaptation Program in the future. Contact Cultural Adaptation at 253-6165 for more information.

The food, culture and sharing a meal

with a new Japanese friend makes it an experience not to be missed.

TRADITIONAL YAKISOBA Ingredients: (serves 2)

2 packages of soba noodles for yakisoba, these are the thin soba noodles, precooked 2 Tbsp vegetable oil for sautéing 3 oz lean pork sliced thin, cut into 1 inch lengths 2 oz of onion cut into julienne strips 1 oz of carrot cut into julienne strips 7 oz of cabbage cut into julienne strips 1 oz “Tenkasu” crunchy fried tempura bits; these can be purchased pre-cooked in small bags 3.5 oz of Otafuku brand yakisoba sauce (the package with the “smiley lady” and the yellow and brown label) “Aonori”, feathery nori flakes used for flavor and garnish Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking Method: 1. Heat ½ of the oil in a medium size sauté pan. Gently massage the soba noodles in the package to separate them. Add soba to heated oil, and sauté for approximately 3 minutes, until they start to get just a little color and are coated with oil. 2. Remove soba from sauté pan, and place in separate bowl. 3. Heat the rest of oil in sauté pan and add pork, cooking thoroughly until no more pink color is visible. Remove the pork to the bowl with the noodles. 4. Sauté all vegetables in the pork drippings, starting with onion and carrot and cook until onion becomes translucent and cabbage is partially wilted. Place soba and pork back into pan on top of the vegetables, let sit for 15 seconds to help steam the cabbage, then mix well. 5. Mix the Tenkasu (small tempura crunchies) in with the noodle mixture, add the yakisoba sauce and stir well. Add salt and pepper to taste. 6. Place your finished Yakisoba onto a decorative plate and garnish with a sprinkle of Aonori (very small shredded flakes of nori). *Note: If you want to make this dish more “substantial”, a nice addition is one sunny side up egg placed atop the Yakisoba. A crisscross design of Japanese mayonnaise and Okonomiyaki sauce add a nice contrast as well as adding extra flavor.

GREENING THE PLANET by Nikki Bennett, Community Writer

This Earth Day,

April 22

the challenge is to find ways to lessen our use of greenhouse gases.

What are greenhouse gases (GHGs)?

Natural GHGs, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide, keep the Earth at a comfortable temperature (without them, our planet would be about 33°C colder!). These gases work by absorbing and emitting radiation, which heats the Earth. When other GHGs are introduced into the atmosphere, they work the same way. Extra carbon dioxide produced by fossil fuels, like gasoline and carbon-based fuels, like wood, coal and oil, can cause a “greenhouse effect,” adding warmth to the planet. Man-made “ozone depleting substances” (most commonly found in refrigerants such as Freon) can enter the atmosphere and displace naturally occurring ozone. The Earth’s ozone layer acts as a barrier against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When the ozone layer breaks down, these rays add to the heat. In 2010, the Department of Defense (DoD) developed a strategic sustainability policy, outlining its plans to help “green the government.” Decreasing the use of GHGs is a major part of this policy. DoD plans install energy efficient fixtures, tap into renewable energy and reduce the use of petroleum products in the non-tactical fleet.

You can follow some of these guidelines in your home as well.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

RENEWABLE ENERGY

REDUCING FOSSIL FUELS

Energy efficient equipment, such as high-efficiency electrical appliances and lighting fixtures are being installed in new buildings.

Renewable energy harnesses energy from the sun, waves, wind, rain or geothermal heat, producing a potentially endless supply of power. DoD hopes to procure at least 18% of its energy from these sources by 2020.

By 2020, DoD plans to reduce the use of fossil fuels in its motor fleet by 30%.

• Conserve water. It takes energy to produce clean, drinkable water. • Unplug appliances when not in use. • Turn your refrigerator temperature up. Increasing the thermostat by just a couple of degrees saves energy. • Run your dishwasher only when it’s full. • Use cold or warm settings on your clothes washer instead of the hot setting. • Replace burned-out light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs.

14

• Use solar energy as a backup power. Several types of compact solar power generators can be purchased on-line. These are great for charging batteries, powering small appliances and great for camping too! • Install solar outdoor lighting for walkways and patios. You can even buy solar Christmas lights! • Try using a solar cooker.

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

• Walk, ride a bike or skateboard; not only do you eliminate using fossil fuels, you get exercise as well! • Take mass transit. • Consider buying a vehicle that uses alternative fuels. • Carpool. • Using electric or solar powered mowers, or a human-powered reel mower cuts down on the amount of GHGs emitted.

Does it seem you have nothing to bring to the “GUN SHOW”? Are you in a small, but not quite medium shirt? Chances are it's not because you're neglecting those muscles. With over 20-plus years in the Marine Corps, I've seen my share of Marines try every bicep curl and tricep extension in the book just to come up short at the “SHOW.” You may ask yourself why your efforts are not paying off, you need to work the whole package. When you do not work the entire body, your muscles are weaker than they should be and they act like brakes on the size and strength of everything else.

The problem is simple to correct as long as you're willing to invest time working on the entire package. With a little hard work and focus on the body as a whole you should see results in no time. You can build new muscle from head to toe and put yourself back in the Arms Race. Now that we are all on the same page, let’s look at the biceps function. Biceps help your arm bend and you work them whenever you perform a curling motion with your arm. I know most of you know this as I have seen many “showing the time on your watch” or better yet, giving directions such as “over there” as you perform the double bicep pose. Now ask yourself, besides showing off to someone, When is the last time I increased the weight I use on my arm exercises?

A huge THANK YOU to our volunteer models, John R. Baltazar Jr., Kyrien Clark, Justin Coverdale and Glenn Ray.

"The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" by Arnold Schwarzenegger "Blood & Guts" by Dorian Yates

by John R. Baltazar Jr., Community Writer

Here are the true facts about muscle growth. You need to create overload and challenge them with progressively heavier weights to make them grow. They'll adapt by growing bigger and stronger. Since your biceps are not receiving that overload from curls, you need to recruit bigger muscles to help them grow in tandem.

Now let's talk about your core - the center of all that makes the “SHOW complete. Your core muscles are the abdominal, back and pelvic muscles. Your biceps, triceps and other muscles need well-balanced support to become stronger and bigger. An unstable core limits how efficiently your central nervous system controls your muscles. This can raise your risk of injury. Unwanted injury will keep you out of the gym and put a halt to your goal of huge guns.

O

ne of my favorite arm buster exercises, one that I did during my entire Marine Corps career, is the chin-up. This movement forces you to lift your entire body, which is several times the amount of weight you could curl. Your latissimus dorsi (lats) are the fan-shaped muscles that cover a large portion of your back and do a great deal of the work. When performing a chin-up your biceps are more than just bystanders. They're working as hard as they can. Without their help, you couldn't do a single chin-up. Target your triceps the same way. I recommend close-hand (triangle) pushups and close-grip bench presses with a loaded barbell. You'll be able to add intensity to the pushups by bending at the waist with your glutes in the air and reducing the distance between your hands and feet. Heavy, multi-muscle exercises should be the focus of upper body training. After you've performed them, add curls and extensions to give your arms some extra oomph.

20

P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N F A C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

So even though your biceps and triceps aren't part of your core, their performance is affected. A weaker or less balanced base of support limits the strength and power your arm muscles can generate. A stronger core enables all of your muscles to work harder, longer and more productively. It's like your body wants quid pro quo: You develop better abs while creating the base that allows you to build bigger arms.

T

wo of the biggest and strongest muscles of your upper body are the lats and the pectoralis (pecs). If these are disproportionately weak muscles compared to your arms, your body will be reluctant to increase its overall upper body strength and power. This could set you up for injury. The trapezius (traps) play a huge role in the quest for “BIG GUNS.” The actions of your shoulder blades are controlled, in part, by the traps. Stronger traps and shoulders will help you isolate your biceps more regularly during your workouts. This solid platform allows you to build all the other muscles attached around your shoulder blades. By adding a 20-degree bend over dumbbell shrugs, deadlifts and inverted rows, you can build the strength needed to add weight when you train your arms directly.

Y

ou may be telling yourself, "I am ready for the Show.” There is one more area of focus for your core strengthening. It is your buns of steel or gluteus maximus (glutes). Believe it or not, your glutes are part of a chain of muscles and other tissues that also include your lats. The glutes work together with the rest of your core muscles to stabilize your spine when you move. When you do an exercise like a chin-up, your biceps and lats work to move your body while your lats and glutes protect your spine and prevent sudden twists that might cause an injury. This is why lat pull-downs are a mediocre substitute for chin-ups. Lat pulldowns are a good starter. Standing and lifting your body (or free weights) trains your core to work harder and stay stable. When your glutes and lats are strong and your spine is safe, chin-ups enable your biceps to work as hard as you want to push them. That's why the prone cobra, which strengthens your glutes and back (among other muscles), is another key exercise for building great arms.

So now you have some knowledge, bring that knowledge to the “Gun Show.” It is your responsibility to go out and make it work. There is no time like the present. Go out, hit the gym and put your glutes in gear ... along with your lats, traps, core and all the other muscles that are welcome at the “SHOW”.

APRIL 2013

Capt. Jacob Smith, administrative law officer in charge at SJA, said the application process is necessary for a few reasons: To make sure that all private businesses are following ethical rules, that it does not appear that the Department of Defense is endorsing any particular business, and that none of the private businesses compete directly with the MCCS services already provided to the community, since MCCS services are offered for little or no profit.

“The process was easy,” Donahue said. “I got approved in about a week.” Smith said that businesses like candle or craft sales usually do get approved in a week or two, but that other types of businesses may take longer. Unique businesses that may not have been introduced to the community before and services that require direct contact, such as with hair care, makeup, massage, etc., may require additional questions, slowing the process. Businesses where services include the piercing of skin, like tattoos or permanent make up, as well as any type of food sales, are prohibited. If you are interested in starting a private business, the first step is to go to the SJA office and request an application. In that application packet there is a list of necessary documents to submit and stepby-step instructions. Active duty personnel must obtain command approval and dependents must get their sponsor’s signature. Depending upon the type of business, approval from medical may be required and if you live on base, base housing must approve the application. Once the required signatures have been obtained, the application is submitted to SJA, which will then draw up a letter for MCCS approval, Smith said. MCCS generally approves any business that is not in direct competition with their activities.

“There is a rumor that MCCS collects money from (the profits of) private businesses,” Smith said. “That isn’t true. MCCS only charges a fee when you use their credit card machines for transactions or when they charge a flat rate for the use of their facilities.” Smith said that when initially applying for approval, it is important to include descriptions and photographs of the products or services you provide in the application as well as a résumé stating your credentials and experience. For instance, Donahue had worked for a house cleaning company before moving to Iwakuni, so she was able to bring her experience here. Smith said adding details to your application package is key. “The better the package, the faster it will run through (the approval process),” he said. “We don’t want to cut you loose on the public if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Private businesses are not required to submit annual audits or reports to SJA for it to report them to the IRS or any other agency, Smith said. However, private business owners must submit a short renewal package annually to maintain their approved status.

Like all privately-owned businesses launched by active duty military and their dependents, Donahue had to get her business approved by the Station Judge Advocate and MCCS before she could start working.

April 20, 9 AM - 3 PM; Crossroads Mall

“I’m really busy already,” Donahue said. “I love to clean and everyone here really seemed to need a service like that. I make money doing what I like to do.”

CRAFT & INFORMATION FAIR

In December, station resident Erin Donahue started Squeaky Clean, a home-cleaning service and has watched her business take off.

A group of private business owners, artists and crafters who meet monthly to network and share business and marketing ideas. The group also maintains the online Iwakuni Business Directory, free listings of home-based businesses and plans to host craft and information fairs a few times a year. Meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 6 PM in the station library, located on the 3rd floor, Bldg. 411.

BASE-WIDE POWER OUTAGE

Thank you for your understanding.

n the spring of 1989, Bonnie Finney of Norfolk, Virginia tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her van as a sign to her community of her personal battle against child abuse. Bonnie’s three-year-old grandson, Michael “Bubba” Dickenson, died of injuries inflicted by her daughter’s violent boyfriend.

The blue ribbon serves as a constant reminder … to fight for protection for our children. We must protect our most precious gift … our children. Please wear a blue ribbon … put one on your car … give one to your friends … tell them what it means … you may change a child’s life. - Bonnie Finney The spirit of the Blue Ribbon Campaign has spread and is honored nationwide during the month of April, Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month. We urge you wear a blue ribbon throughout April to show your support in ending this tragedy. For more information about Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month programs and activities during month of April and throughout the year, contact Behavioral Health at 253-4526.
