While Memorial Day weekend brings thoughts of picnics, camping and travel, we also take this time to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to secure the freedoms we enjoy. In many of our hometowns we are used to seeing streets lined with flags, families attending parades and some prefer to remember our fallen in personal time away from others. I find it an essential part of the weekend to remember why we celebrate. I encourage each of you to take a reflective moment during your weekend celebrations and travel. Take advantage of the long Memorial Day weekend. Discover Seoul (ITT, 253-4377) or your batting swing through the Memorial Day Softball Tournament (Intramural Sports, 253-3067). If you are an unaccompanied service member, take the weekend to visit Kobe and Osaka via the Universal Studios Japan trip (SMP, 253-3585). This month is full of exciting local and overnight trips; check out the calendar on the back page or visit mccsiwakuni.com for a complete calendar of events and the latest updates. May signifies the change in seasons from spring to summer, and it also signals our military community that PCS season is approaching. Our Preview writers are here to lend you a helping hand, this issue provides some tools that will help you prepare for your transition. If you, or one of your friends, are heading towards a new duty station, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the resources aboard MCAS Iwakuni. You never know when that “helpful little tip” will make all the difference in the world! Last but definitely not least, we take the time to celebrate our Mothers. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother or someone who is like a mother, she is special. You’ll find a great article tailored to each family member on how to show appreciation to Mom. If your cooking skills include burnt toast and instant coffee, Club Iwakuni (253-3363) offers a fantastic Mother’s Day Brunch. Reserve your spot today to enjoy great food, great company and give Mom that much needed break she deserves. Whatever you have planned, MCCS is here and ready to serve you! wine review: Mont La Salle Altar & Groth Chardonnay
MCX MAY WINE SPECIAL
MONT LA SALLE ALTAR wines are from Napa Valley and are perfect for Church services. The winery has a rich Christian history that dates back from 1934. These light sweet mellow flavored wines are made according to Canon Law and approved for Sacramental use. GROTH CHARDONNAY is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery from Napa Valley that provides us a story like I have never read before. Sometimes we wonder what makes a wine more expensive than another. The family’s story shares their experience of the viniculture
process of this grape. For example, the conditions on how this Chardonnay grape was grown, the harvest season, and the winemaker’s skilled touch from grape into wine bottle. Reading about this process captured a feeling within that I had to absolutely go out and buy this wine. I am all about experiencing a wine that has resonated with me; this is part of my wine journey. Check out website www.grothwines.com.

MOTHER’S DAY IDEAS Wouldn’t Mom love a break on Mother’s Day? by Troy Guyer and Rachel McCandless
Would your Mom like breakfast in bed? Dad and the kids can easily prepare many breakfast dishes from pancakes or French toast to eggs and fresh fruit. Here’s a guide to age appropriate tasks for the kids in the kitchen, with Dad’s supervision, of course!
If you’d rather cook dinner, here is a delicious and easy to prepare recipe that takes advantage of the great fresh seafood available here in Japan and perfect grilling weather. If you don’t like salmon, any other firm fish will do, just watch the cooking time. With a little help from Dad, it’s time to go shopping and fire up the grill! Don’t have time to make dinner? Bring the whole family over to Club Iwakuni for a special Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 12, 10 AM - 2 PM. Treat yourselves to an all you can eat buffet featuring eggs, bacon, pancakes, soup, salad, jumbo shrimp cocktail, chicken, fish, prime rib, baked ham, all the side dishes, assorted desserts, a kid’s menu and even funnel cakes! If you cannot make brunch, treat Mom to dinner at JD’s Grille. Traditional favorites such as steak and lobster tail are available or try one of our new chicken, beef or seafood entrees.

ACHIEVING SMART FITNESS GOALS!
S
by Barbara Roman, Fitness Coordinator
PECIFIC
Identifying your goals and being specific is the first and most crucial step in developing your fitness goals. “Losing weight” and “toning up” for the summer are too vague with no clear direction. Try to be specific about your goals like “I want to lose 2 pounds a week for the next two months.” Questions to consider: •What do you want to accomplish? (ex. complete a 5K, bench 300 pounds) •Why is it important? (ex. Lower my blood pressure, compete in the bench club) •How are you going to accomplish it? (ex. increasing exercise, better nutrition, hiring a personal trainer).
R
EALISTIC
Dreams are great but are they realistic? When you set your goal, you have to ask yourself if it’s something you can accomplish or is it something you want to do. Is your goal based on some outside influence like your spouse, friend or even the cover of a magazine? Are you setting your goal for “you” or someone else? Be real and honest with yourself and think hard about what it is you really want to accomplish. Only you will get the satisfaction from reaching the finish line and only you will be disappointed if you don’t.
M
EASURABLE
Now it ’s a mat ter of staying on track and continuously monitoring your progress. Having a baseline or starting point will help you map out a timeline so you can check on your progress and make adjustments along the way. If you want to lose 20 pounds in 2 months, record your weight every week. If it is a 5k you want to complete, test your pace every week.
A
TTAINABLE
Be sure to set attainable goals. Too hard a goal will leave you feeling like a failure (ex. losing 20 pounds in two weeks is not likely attainable). Likewise, an easy goal will leave you feeling unchallenged. There’s no doubt you’ll bench press 300 if you already press 295. The point of an attainable goal is it should be challenging and rewarding. Who wants to take all the time to set a detailed program if the results of a goal are so small? Ask yourself: Do I have the skills and ability to do it? Do I believe I can do it?

T
IMELY
Oh, the dreaded deadline. If it weren’t for deadlines we’d never get anything done, and in the case of setting a goal, deadlines are a must. Having a deadline gives you something to strive toward and achieve. Setting a timeframe can be an adrenaline rush and motivate you to work harder when you draw closer to the end. You must hold to that deadline and test along the way to ensure you’re on the right track. Of course you might have to adjust; however, don’t push it back too much. If you fall behind, pick yourself up and move forward. “By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be.” -Hans Christian Anderson

PCS WITH SUCCESS by Yolanda Hooten, Community Writer
Y
ou came, you saw, and you most definitely conquered your Japan tour. Now it’s almost time to go. Many people begin the anticipation of ”what happens next?” 6-8 months before their rotation date. It all begins with wondering where you will end up next. Will it be close to family? Will it be some place new? Along with that anticipation comes some anxiety. Moving does not have to be the nightmare it used to be. In fact, there are so many wonderful resources at your fingertips and, let's not forget, that the Marine Corps is small and undoubtedly you know someone who has been where you are going. If all else fails, hopefully this article will help you out.
The news has arrived and your infamous web orders are here. Now what? The very first thing you should do is visit the Information, Referral & Relocation Office located in Bldg. 411, Rm. 101. They offer a “PCS with Success” class that is very informative and is also required for your sponsor to take. There is a form the sponsor is given at the end of the class that is called your PCS transfer data sheet. This paper must be turned into IPAC (Admin Center) before you can really do anything else. My husband and I chose to attend the class together and I am so happy we did. It is a lot of information and 4 ears are better than 2. It also helped us to communicate better about our next step. I really wish the class was required for both sponsor and spouse to attend because it is that informative. The class answered questions I didn’t even know I had and addressed issues that may arise. If you take nothing else away from this article, please attend the “PCS with Success” class with your sponsor. You will definitely be satisfied with all the information and resources provided. After the class is done, give yourself some time to decompress; it is a lot of information. One of the first things you will probably discuss are the important dates. When do you want to fly out? Where do you want to go? When do you want to “pack out”? How long do you plan on living in TLF? These questions might seem impossible but the best thing to do is look at a calendar and just start making a “rough estimate”.
The most important dates that you must decided are the 10 day window you would like to leave (which must include 2 Saturdays to optimize your chances of getting on the Patriot Express) and when you would like your household goods and advance shipment sent. We have two small children and I was eagerly hoping we might be able to fly commercially, however, that bubble quickly burst. The active duty service member must fly on the Patriot Express if possible, and only in special circumstances can they fly commercially.
After determining these dates, it is time to contact all the people who will help you set up your move. First, we called Distribution Management Office (DMO) at 253-3907 and chose all of our pack out dates. For those of you who are worried about starting too early or too late, DMO recommends that you start the process three months out. During PCS Season (which is June - August and November - January), dates for packing your furniture go fast and it is important to secure a date as soon as you are confident of your travel plans. Your household goods will normally take about 60 days to arrive at your next location and your advance shipment depends on which coast you are headed. If you are headed to the West Coast it will take 30-35 days and East Coast will take 40-45 days. You also need to call the Housing Office (253-5541) to set up your loaner furniture. Typically, your loaner furniture arrives on the same day that your household goods leave. Many bases stateside do not offer free furniture so it is a good idea to send your furniture as close to 60 days out as possible. We are planning on doing some traveling before getting to our next duty station so we are only packing our stuff 3 weeks before we leave.
HELPFUL WEBSITES
♦ www.militaryonesource.com ♦ www.militaryinstallation.dod.mil ♦ www.defensetravel.dod.mil ♦ www.move.mil
After setting up the pack out comes my favorite part; collecting information! Luckily, we live in the year 2013 and so much of the information has already been collected and organized for us. A great place to start is www.militaryonesource.com. This website could easily become your new favorite hobby, right up there with (dare I say it) Pinterest! Another great source to use is the people around you. Everyone will want to know where you are headed and will have information (useful or not) to give you. We have made the decision to live off base and so I have spent a lot of time on www.zillow.com, www.militarybyowner, and www.ahrn.com. These website are extremely helpful in locating housing options available in your new area and they allow you to be very specific on what you are looking for. Some allow you to put in your rank and tell you what the expected Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is in the area.
The beginning is always exhilarating and then it starts to feel like you are just hanging out waiting for your travel days to come. What should you do with all this “limbo” time? Our family made our final “to do” lists. The first list was places and experiences that we just had to see before we left Japan, and the other was our “spring” cleaning. One of the cool things about being in the military is that you have an opportunity to reevaluate your “stuff” every 3 years. We try our hardest to not collect a lot of clutter and being shipped around every 3 years really helps with that. This is also a great time to contact the school to let them know you will be PSCing soon, as well as the CDC/SAC if you use those facilities.
Now, we are in our final countdown! WE LEAVE IN 6 WEEKS! I was born and raised in the military, so I like to bounce things off my mom, who is retired from the Army. She is great at saying, “Wow, that’s not how we did it!” It really helps put things in perspective for me when I feel like there are just too many decisions to make. Luckily, we have lots of resources at our disposal to make our transition to our new duty station less stressful. The most important thing to remember is to enjoy the process, take it all in, and hopefully it will be an interesting learning experience for you to share with others. Or at least that is what I keep telling myself.
YE
AR S.
There are still some things that need to be handled but are better left to the “last minute”. We will need to cancel our cell phones, cable & internet, and of course have our mail forwarded to our new address. The last part is a little tricky because we don’t yet have a forwarding address. In my case, we will have everything sent to my mom’s. If you have a sponsor they can get you a PO box at your new duty station to hold you over until you find a more permanent residence. We will also need to check out with medical and TriCare. Again, these are all things that are best left until 5-10 days before you leave.

JAPANESE SCHOOLS HOIKUENS & YOCHIENS
Building Friendships through learning by Nami Yamamoto, Youth Cultural Program Coordinator
As you are planning for your child’s care and education, you may want to consider the options outside the gate. Children enrolled in daycare, kindergarten or regular school will have a unique chance to learn the language, experience the culture as well as build new friendships. Children tend to pick up new languages quicker and easier than adults. Your child may even end up as your translator as you venture out around Japan. Japan offers two options for children under 6 years of age. If both parents are working, the Hoikuen will most likely be the best choice. If one parent has the time to be involved in their child's education, Yochiens offer a more educational structured curriculum. This option will take more involvement from parents and they do not offer services the entire day.
Yochien
Hoikuen (Nursery School)
Hoikuen
Yochien (Kindergarten) Yochien is the Japanese Kindergarten for 3-6 year olds. Children will learn basic life and study skills to help prepare them for starting school. Children will receive 4-5 hours of structured educational classroom time. The Yochien is more based on education than the Hoikuen and is regulated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Hoikuens and Yochiens provide a unique opportunity for American children to experience Japan and its culture. Japanese is the only language spoken in daily activities. The Hoikuens and Yochiens do not provide translating services, so a translator is required during enrollment and throughout the school year to help with notes sent home and coordinating information to the school/teachers. The Yochien will need the translator’s contact information in order to contact you for emergencies or to leave messages. If you are interested in having your child experience Japanese schools in Iwakuni, the Resource & Referral Office can provide you with an information packet; visit them at Bldg 637 or call 253-4141. If you need directions or a map to the schools, visit the Information & Referral counter at Bldg. 410.
From our community...
I have had the privilege of sending my child to Higashi Yochien for the past 7 months and I cannot say enough how much we both have enjoyed the experience. My daughter has had the opportunity to participate in 3 school performances (all in Japanese and one involving playing an instrument), has taken field trips to harvest lotus root and see the middle school students perform, and she has learned so much about Japanese culture. She is only 4 years old and speaks better Japanese than both her father and I. I have also had several opportunities to see my daughter interact with her Japanese classmates and teachers. I am beyond proud of the progress she has made to acclimate to Japan and its culture.

HOMEWARD BOUND
We love our pets and to us they’re a bona-fide member of our family, but when it comes to making the big move during a PCS, things are a little different for them. If you brought your pets with you or adopted them during your stay in Japan, you’ll be relieved to hear that traveling with animals back to the states isn’t too difficult. All you need to do is add a few 'To Do' entries to your moving calendar.
