3 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR POOL SHOT

SMP MIZUHO SNOWBOARD TRIPS

by Aaron Roman, Community Writer

Pool can be a great way to relax and unwind. But sometimes that competitive part of ourselves just can’t stand the idea of being beaten like a dirty rug in front of a bunch of friends Here are three ways to improve your pool shot:

1. Pre-Shot Routine

Before you even take your shot, try to get in the habit of a “pre-shot routine.” Visualize your shot, chalk your stick, aim, and make any minor adjustment. Do this for every shot, even the most simple ones.

2. Ghost Ball Aiming

Now that you’ve gone through your routine, it is time to take aim! One technique you can use is “Ghost Ball Aiming.” The idea is to visualize an imaginary ball next to the ball you intend to hit, and position the imaginary ball in your mind so that it is where the cue ball needs to make contact with your target in order to make the shot. You can even ask a friend to place an unused ball next to the target ball so you can physically see it.

3.

“Quiet Eyes”

When you have set yourself up for the shot take a moment to “quiet your eyes.” This term refers to focusing on a target (the cue ball and target ball respectively) for a period of time. Studies have actually shown that this technique has improved performance in many of other athletes so use it to your advantage.

Put these new skills to the test at one of the many pool tournaments held by the SMP.

FEBRUARY 15 & 27, 5:30 AM - 7:30 PM TRANSPORTATION FEE: $20 ONE-DAY LIFT TICKET: APPROX. ¥4900 Come with us on our Snowboard Trip to Mizuho Ski Resort! Bus departs the Hornet’s Nest at 6 AM. Register at the Hornet’s Nest or Marine Lounge.

AIR HOCKEY TOURNAMENT FEBRUARY 23, 7-9 PM The Hornet’s Nest is hosting its One-on-One Air Hockey Tournament. Best two out of three matches for 10 points. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place winners. Snacks and beverages will be served throughout the free event.

SMP TOKYO FUN TRIP MARCH 31 - APRIL 5, SIGN-UP STARTS FEBRUARY 26 AT 10 AM Fee: $250 Covers Transportation & Lodging Explore the sights and shop in Tokyo on this fun 5-day trip! An optional tour to DisneySea is provided; admission is approximately ¥6,400. Register at the Hornet’s Nest or Marine Lounge.

Valentine's Day Love it or Hate it? by Jessica McFarlane, Public Affairs Specialist

MCCS CHAT MCCS Chat is a program in which MCCS representatives visit various MCCS facilities to speak one-on-one with the community. These sessions offer the community the opportunity to get immediate answers to their MCCS questions. But more importantly, MCCS can get ideas and suggestions directly from them that can help MCCS improve its programs and facilities. Each month, we will include your questions here. We hope that you enjoy reading our responses and watching your suggestions take motion. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us and helping us continually improve!

Are there any plans to get healthier food options in the Crossroads Food Court?

Are there volunteer opportunities to help out our community, on/off base?

At this time, there are no plans to change the current food franchises contracted in the food court. However, be on the lookout for healthier hot sandwiches that we are adding to Bulldogs menu in the upcoming months. Current healthy options in Crossroads include Subway Chopped Salads, Burger King Salads, and Taco Bell’s Carnitas Healthy Choice line. MCCS is developing plans for the Strike Zone snack bar to resemble Sumo Burritos out of Okinawa, and that will include healthier alternatives too. MCCS has already added pre-made garden salads to the Marine Mart and mobile food trucks for a healthier grab n’ go selection. Club Iwakuni offers an all you can eat soup and extensive salad bar daily, and there are several healthy menu items in Eagle’s Nest including sandwiches, soups, and salads.

There are numerous volunteer opportunities on the installation that range from helping at your unit readiness events, coaching youth sports, Thrift Store, mentoring at MCFTB, Scouts, PTO and SMP to name a few. SMP has monthly community relation trips that allow single servicemembers the chance to make the community better. If off-base volunteering interests you, the Station Chaplains are always conducting COMRELs at local schools and orphanages. MCFTB also offers free classes to help volunteers get the most from their experience, and they offer points of contact for locations looking for volunteers. For a complete list of volunteer opportunities, go to http://mccsiwakuni.com/marine-family/ppr/ volunteer-opportunities/

Can you offer better bikes in the bike selection? We recognized that there was a demand for a bigger bike and recreational goods selection, and we are opening a bike and sporting goods store in response. Coming this spring to our new “Tori Pines Town Center” will be 2000 square feet that will allow an expanded bike and sporting good selection. We look forward to carrying new additional lines along with a Special Order program.

Can you increase the selection of food at the Northside Marine Mart? Yes! MCCS is investing $5 million in renovating and expanding the Northside Marine Mart. The store will double in size, feature a full-size food bar and greatly expand the selection of groceries. This project is funded by MCCS and has been in the works for over two years. This is an example of how MCCS reinvests the money it generates back into our community.

ARE YOU WHERE YOU

WANT TO BE FINANCIALLY? By Dana Urbanek, P&PD Financial Specialist

Military Saves Week is a great opportunity to pause and take a quick look at your current savings. Don’t have any? No problem, you can start accumulating savings today. Even if you can’t invest the proverbial 10% of your income, start with 1% or 2%. If you are already investing 5%, perhaps this year will be the time to up that to 6%. Strapped for cash already? Start out with $20-50 per month and watch it add up. Savings is important, even when you are trying to get out of debt. It helps during emergencies and keeps you out of more debt.

Saving Strategies •

An Emergency Fund can help cover unexpected events or expenses. It is recommended to accumulate three to six months of living expenses, but you can start from where you are right now.

Reserve Savings are to cover normal, expected, but not monthly expenses. This could include birthday or Christmas presents, JCI, car insurance, oil changes, and the like. Typically, you would divide the final amount needed with how many months exist before you have to pay. If your JCI (or birthday and holiday gifts) typically cost you $1000, and you have 12 months before you have to pay it, simply divide $1000 by 12 months (1000/12=84) to realize you need to put $84 a month into your savings account so it’s there when you need it. Reserve accounts are a powerful way to avoid getting into debt.

Goal-Getter Savings help you save for a particular goal. For instance, if you plan to buy a house or car when you go back stateside, save what you think a typical house payment or car payment would be each month. This will help you determine if your budget can handle a car or house payment, and also, save for your down payment. Goal-getter accounts can help pay for many goals including school, travel, a new couch…the options are endless!

Retirement Accounts are tax protected ways to save for retirement (age 591/2 or later). They provide ways to earn more without taxes eating at your earnings. Think TSP, IRA, or 401K. The younger, the better to get started, but it is never too late. There are even catch-up payments possible for those over 50.

Whether or not you have been a saver in the past, good saving habits can start today! Creating a savings plan can be as easy as an automatic transfer from your checking to your savings, or an allotment from your paycheck. Need help? Just give Personal & Professional Development (P&PD) or your unit Command Financial Specialist (CFS) a call to get help making a spending plan or determining the best way to accomplish your savings goals. We also have monthly personal finance classes to help you learn more about your money and how to get it working for you. Call 253-6439 or check the Preview to see what we have to offer each month.

Smart Savers from our Community Share Their Spending Tips

No More Debt for This Family! by Michelle Todd, Iwakuni military spouse

Almost four years ago my husband, Dan, and I had accumulated approximately 82K in debt! One day we just decided, NO MORE! We registered for the financial course at our church and from that point forward it was game on! We followed the course program exactly as prescribed with gazelle intensity. Hand wrote budget sheets, developed cash envelopes, lived on a strict budget and before you know it our debt was snowballing to zero. Two and half years ago we paid off my student loan debt and have been COMPLETELY debt free ever since. I still hand write budgets and still manage our cash envelopes and maintain a cash only lifestyle. In the Todd house when it comes to making purchases if we can’t pay for it in cash we save until we can, no exceptions!

by Matthew McFarlane, Navy Chief

Splurge! (But mostly, save!)

Military Saves Week of Learning February 22-26 Building 411, Room 123

I like to call our spending habits “thrifty 90% of the time so we can splurge 10%.” What that means is that we save as much as we can, where we can, so that we can splurge and go on a last-minute vacation or make a spontaneous purchase without having to put it on a credit card.

Military Saves Week is a week-long world wide event to help servicemembers and families improve their finances by setting a goal, making a plan, and learning to save automatically. All classes are held in Building 411, Room 123. Sign up today at 253-6439!

Our strategy is pretty simple--listen to my wife. In all seriousness, we save so that we don’t have to worry. To be comfortable in our golden years, we both invest through our employer’s retirement investment plan—myself through my Navy TSP and my wife through her MCCS 401K. We also maximize our emergency and retirement savings by leaving that money in the highest yielding savings account (Money Market Savings.) When our bank has a special on a high-yielding certificate, we purchase it with some of our savings and give our savings yet another bump. We have one credit card that we make all purchases on and we pay it off in full at the end of every month. This allows us to reap the cash-back rewards without ever paying a dime in interest. If we go on vacation, buy a car, purchase a high end appliance, we pay in full ... period.

My Path to Financial Enlightenment

by Felix De Jesus III

When I arrived in the fleet as a Lance Corporal, I had over six hundred dollars in overdraft fees before even receiving my first paycheck. I was spending my check in less than one week on things like eating out, weekend nightlife, and my nicotine habit. I did not budget, so I would receive overdraft fees up to $25 on necessities like haircuts and cleaning supplies. I also maxed out my credit card with a 17.9 % APR. Asking for money was embarrassing as I was in one of the most secure situations that anyone could ask for. I had no money to visit my family, buy new things or take trips. I was miserable and fed up with this lifestyle. The only thing I had going for me was the barracks life and a guaranteed paycheck. I kept faith and prayed, grabbing my shield of knowledge and armed with my sword of persistence I took on my dragon of debt. I made a budget and I learned what I spent and where. Also, I learned that you need to pay yourself first by saving. Savings can save you from using credit to pay for life’s random emergencies. Next, I looked at my expenses and started separating needs from wants and prioritizing so I can enjoy myself from time to time. Lastly, I started tackling my debt and worked from small to big. I also quit smoking which was instant savings! I have to say all this was initially hard, but with practice and discipline budgeting becomes natural and life gets easier. Everyone has their method of using their money and this is mine. Debt isn’t bad if it will provide profit and income in the future. Make sure it is a smart choice and separate good debt from bad. Never stop learning, always keeping faith, and you will triumph one day.

Join us at for fun, cupcakes, and lots of ways to save yourself money. Organizations will provide valuable information on resources and services around base.

Evaluating Investments and their Risk | Feb 25, 8-9:30 AM Technical class to help you understand evaluating, risk, and your risk tolerance. We will take a look at ways to evaluate investments, and consider the “math” of Beta, Standard Deviation, Alpha, Price/Earnings Ratio, and R-squared.

SAVER VS. SPENDER “What type of Servicemember do You Want to Be?”

Choosy Charlie (Savings: $0) MOVE OUT

CAR

FIRST APARTMENT

TAX RETURN

Charlie joined bootcamp at age 18. Signed up for GI Bill. Enrolled in TSP with $60 per LES going toward retirement. Has bank automatically deposits $100 per paycheck into a savings account. At first duty station, learned about types of TSP funds so she could choose high growth investments.

She moved into barracks room and purchased a used TV with cash. Budgets to buy items using future paychecks without borrowing money.

EDUCATION

After getting settled at first unit she enrolled in college. After two years she is taking classes using tuition assistance, CLEP, DANTES and applying for all scholarships and grants through P&PD office.

ENTERTAINMENT

Charlie tries to limit going out for dinner except on weekends and dines at the Mess Hall as much as possible. She also takes advantage of free or more affordable options such as inexpensive SMP tours, Outdoor Rec rentals, movies at the base theater, and free rentals at the library. She also took class at P&PD to help budget spending.

At second duty station, now eligible to own a vehicle, Charlie takes the time to find a well maintained, older economy car for $4,000. She uses the savings from her first duty station to make a sizeable down payment and takes an auto loan through her bank at 6% with payments she can easily afford.

Charlie receives her tax return and uses it to pay off the remaining automobile loan balance. She purchases a new pair of tires for her vehicle and a new car stereo. She pays in full and splits the rest of her tax return between her savings account for expenses that might pop up during the year, and a certificate of deposit with a 3% guaranteed rate of return through her credit union.

Choosy Charlie’s Savings after two tours: $9,500 in TSP $30,000 in savings accounts and CDs.

Spendy Sam (Savings: $0) MOVE OUT

Joined Bootcamp Age 18. Skipped the GI Bill over short term higher paychecks. Signed up for TSP with $20 an LES going toward retirement, but never checked to see which fund his money was being invested in. Since he joined the Marines before Oct. 1, 2015, his retirement savings are all invested in the G fund.

ENTERTAINMENT

Moved into barracks room and purchased a new entertainment center, putting it all on a credit card with average 20% interest rate for new credit card applicants.

Sam quickly develops pricey habits such as avoiding the Chow Hall for meals, buying a fancy coffee every workday and blowing hundreds of dollars in Hiroshima every weekend. By the time payday comes around, there is very little left in the checking account. He’s heard he can get help doing a budget at the P&PD office, but it sounds like too much work.

EDUCATION

TAX RETURN

FIRST APARTMENT

After getting settled at first unit, he enrolled in college. After two years, he is taking classes using tuition assistance, CLEP, DANTES and applying for all scholarships and grants through P&PD office.

CAR

At second duty station, now eligible to own a vehicle, Sam purchases a slightly used SUV for $18,000 and obtains credit through the dealership at an interest rate of 17%.

Sam looks at the tax return as “free money,” and tears right through it. He heads to the MCX and buys new shoes, a new flat screen and spends the rest on expensive hotels in Tokyo that weekend.

Spendy Sam’s Savings after two tours: $2,300 in TSP, $0 in savings, $10,000 still owed on the car.

Traditional Sweets for

Valentine’s Day Treats

By: Mikie Watanabe, Cultural Adaptation Specialist

I’ll bet there are a lot of Japanese sweets that you have seen but still haven’t tried. If you have attended a tea ceremony, you will remember they served beautiful Japanese sweets. Usually they are prepared with seasonal ingredients. But there are many more! I would like to introduce unique and delicious sweets along with the times of year that they are enjoyed.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

January Zenzai This is a warm, sweet azuki bean soup with grilled rice cake called mochi. In summer time, we enjoy cold zenzai.

Kinako Mochi Mochi is sprinkled with sugar and roasted soybean powder called kinako. This gives the mochi a sweet, nutty flavor. Kinako is included in a lot of beauty products and it is very popular to use as a diet food by mixing with soy milk or yogurt.

February Soy Beans Setsubun is called the Bean-Throwing Festival and falls on February 3, the day before the beginning of spring in the Japanese calendar. To wish for good luck, people eat the same number of beans as their age. Also people scatter beans to drive away evil and bring in good luck saying “oni wa soto, fuki wa uchi!” which means “Out with the devil, in with luck!”

March

March and September

(Vernal and Autumnal Equinox Day) Ohagi Higan means equinoctial week, a seven-day period surrounding the autumnal equinox. In Japan, Vernal and Autumnal Equinox Day have been national holidays since 1948. It is a day to respect one’s ancestors and commemorate their death. During higan, people in Japan visit their family graves and hold a memorial service by offering flowers, incense and ohagi for them. Generally, ohagi is a sweet made with a sticky rice ball covered by red bean paste. Kinako (roasted soybean powder) or sesame covered versions are also popular.

May Kashiwamochi and Chimaki There is a custom of holding a variety of events praying for the healthy growth of boys. These occur on a national holiday on May 5, Tango no sekku, or “Children's Day.” We eat kashiwamochi, which is a rice cake that contains sweet beans wrapped in an oak leaf. Japanese enjoy rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves called chimaki on this day.

Sakuramochi and Hina Arare

Other

Sakuramochi is a pink rice cake with bean paste wrapped in a preserved cherry blossom leaf. You can eat the leaf too. Usually it is served for hinamatsuri (Hina doll festival) on March 3 to celebrate the growth of young girls. Families with daughters will display dolls called hina ningyo in their home. Hina arare is a sweet, bite-sized rice cracker that is also offered at hinamatsuri.

This delicious and chewy treat consists of three to five grilled rice balls coated with soy-and-sugar syrup.Recently, zenzai, kashiwamochi, ohagi and mitarashi dango are available throughout the year without regard to season. You can find them at grocery or convenience stores.

Mitarashi dango

There are many kinds of Japanese sweets and snacks. Please don’t hesitate and have fun! Jaa mata!

The Yuki Onna (literally translated into “snow woman”) is one of the most well-known yokai here in Japan. A yokai is a kind of otherworldly monster native to this country, much in the same way other nations have elementals, fairies, zombies and so forth. Living in the mountains, the yuki onna is said to resemble a beautiful woman in a pristine white kimono. However, do not be taken in by her appearance, as it hides a dangerous creature that is like a version of a vampire. If the yuki onna comes across a lone traveler on her mountain, she will turn into a predator either by luring the prey to her like a siren or going into a hunt mode. Once the poor, unsuspecting person is in the yuki onna’s clutches, she feeds on their life force draining them of their soul leaving behind a frozen shell of a human being. Before hitting the slopes, it is important to understand this threat to your safety and know what kind of defense is available against her. First, recognize the symptoms of a yuki onna victim. It begins with shivering to the point of lethargy. Exposed skin can become affected starting with painful frostbite

and ending with numbness. Loss of feeling in the extremities is also common as well as eye pain or loss of vision. Sometimes even hallucinations can occur and the false feeling of warmth takes over. While these may sound like what happens with hypothermia, make no mistake; it is the work of the yuki onna. The primary defense against this vicious yokai is to avoid going into unfamiliar mountain territory, particularly when alone. She rarely ever attacks groups or people who know where they are going. Also, wear plenty of layers and learn some basics of winter survival such as how to seek shelter and find help in case of emergencies. Yuki onna go straight for the core body temperature so keeping your center as warm as possible will help fend her off. Also, above all, stay hydrated and calm. The elderly and very young are at an increased risk of falling under her spell.
