Time to Get in Shape for Summer Shed those winter clothes and extra pounds, and rejuvenate your body with healthy eating, restful sleep, vigorous exercise and a new look. Jog, swim, bike, roller-skate, bowl, play tennis, go hiking or backpacking. Spend time daily outdoors breathing in fresh air, and take time to relax. Retire to bed early for restful sleep and get up early feeling refreshed and energized. Antioxidant up In a Swedish study of over 31,000 participants, antioxidants were shown to help lower stroke risk, but these nutrition superstars may also prevent cancer, slow the aging process, and reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
Whole foods—especially brightly colored fruits and vegetables—contain a host of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients that work together to enhance the absorption of each other. Relying on whole foods for your antioxidant needs (as opposed to supplements) helps assure that you’re getting all the nutrients that your body requires. Among vegetables, kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and beets top the list for their antioxidant capacity. Prunes, raisins, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and plums are the richest fruit sources of antioxidants. Besides the usual suspects, these foods are also antioxidant rich. Some of them might surprise you. •
Nuts. Pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts are all packed with health-promoting

antioxidants. Toss a few in your salad or smoothie and keep some on hand to snack on when hunger strikes. Nuts are also loaded with heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Spices. Dried spices top the list for their antioxidant capacity. So shake on the turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, oregano, thyme, chili powder, nutmeg, basil, ground ginger, pepper, and rosemary for an antioxidant boost that tastes great, too. (Just maybe not all together!) Beans. Black, red, and pink beans contain abundant antioxidants. Beans are easy to incorporate into the diet. Open a can, rinse, then add to soups, stews, or burritos for a fiber and protein-rich dose of antioxidants.

RETAIL VA Launches Personalized Health Benefits Handbook Veterans enrolled in the health care system of the Department of Veterans Affairs have begun to receive personalized booklets that explain their health care benefits and contain other useful information. “The VA is committed to providing our Nation’s veterans with consistent, clear information about the services available to them,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. The new booklet, called a Health Benefits Handbook, will provide a personalized listing of health benefits based on each veteran’s specific eligibility. The handbook will also have contact information for their local VA medical facilities, appointment scheduling information, guidelines for communicating with their clinical team and, as applicable, information about copays. Distribution of the handbooks began in February, with all 8.5 million veterans enrolled in VA’s health care system scheduled to receive their handbooks by 2013. Veterans will receive updates to their handbook to reflect changes to their benefits or eligibility. The VA operates 152 medical centers and more than 800 community-based outpatient clinics. Last year, inpatient facilities treated more than 690,000 patients, while outpatient clinics registered more than 79 million visits. For more information about the Health Benefits Handbook, visit www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhbh or call VA’s toll-free number at 1-877-222-VETS (8387).
TRICARE For Life TRICARE For Life (TFL) is TRICARE’s Medicarewraparound coverage available to all Medicare-eligible TRICARE beneficiaries, regardless of age or place of residence, provided they have Medicare Parts A and B. While Medicare is your primary insurance, TRICARE acts as your secondary payer minimizing your our-of-pocket expenses. TRICARE benefits include covering Medicare’s coinsurance and deductible.
Plan Overview
Basically, if you use a Medicare participating or non-participating provider, he or she will file your claims with Medicare. Medicare pays its portion and electronically forwards the claim to the TFL claims processor. TFL
pays the provider directly for TRICARE covered services. •
•
•
•
For services covered by both Medicare and TRICARE, Medicare pays first and TFL pays your remaining coinsurance for TRICARE-covered services. For services covered by TRICARE but not by Medicare, TFL pays first and Medicare pays nothing. You must pay the TRICARE fiscal year deductible and cost shares. For services covered by Medicare but not by TRICARE, Medicare pays first and TFL pays nothing. You must pay the Medicare deductible and coinsurance. For services not covered by Medicare or TRICARE, Medicare and TRICARE pay nothing and you must pay the entire bill.
Out-of-Pocket Costs When using TFL, you do not pay any enrollment fees, but you must pay Medicare Part B monthly premiums. Your Part B premium is based on your income. For more information about Part B premiums visit www.medicare. gov or call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778). As described above, you’ll pay nothing out of pocket for services covered by both Medicare and TRICARE.
View the TFL Cost Matrix at http://tricare.mil/ mybenefits/download/forms/2012_TFL_ cost_matrix_unlinked.pdf for more information.
Using TRICARE for Life Overseas Medicare provides coverage in the United States and U.S. Territories. When using TFL in all other overseas locations, TRICARE is the primary payer and you are responsible for paying TRICARE’s annual deductible and cost shares. TRICARE beneficiaries who live overseas and who are eligible for premium free Medicare Part A must have Part B to remain eligible for TRICARE even though Medicare does not provide coverage overseas. International SOS is the TRICARE Overseas Program contractor and will provide the assistance you need for claims, finding a provider, medical information and assistance and authorization for care. For country specific contact information visit http://www.tricareoverseas.com/ContactUs/default.htm. LIBRARY New Titles Robert Ludlum’s The Janson Command by Paul Garrison. Once an assassin and involved in international conspiracy, Paul Janson and his new partner, Jessica Kincaid, now work to rehabilitate and create new lives for other disenchanted covert operatives. Janson also accepts independent jobs, like the one he’s on now, to rescue a kidnapped doctor from West African rebels. It’s not long before he finds himself in the middle of something much bigger. I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. In spite of what Magnus Tavish’s family thinks of her, Poppy is thrilled that she’s marrying him. She’s even more thrilled with the huge family emerald engagement ring he gave her. While showing it off to girlfriends during a celebratory tea, the ring vanishes. That is followed by a series of other unfortunate events. Private Games by James Patterson and Mark Sullivan. Private, the world’s most renowned investigation firm, has a monumental task. Four hundred of the firm’s top agents have been dispatched to London where they will provide security for competitors in the 2012 Olympic Games. When a high-ranking member of the games’ organizing committee is killed just hours before the opening ceremony, Agent Peter Knight knows they’re in for trouble. The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice. A young reporter for the ‘San Francisco Observer’ is at a grand mansion on the coast of California to interview an old woman now trying to sell the home. But an idyllic night is shattered by violence when he is attacked and bitten by a beast he cannot see in the darkness. This sets in motion his transformation into a werewolf. Celebrity in Death by J.D. Robb. Eve doesn’t mind the celebrity partying at the party thrown in honor of a movie based on one of her cases. What she does mind is seeing the actress who plays Peabody floating dead in the pool on the director’s roof. Now it’s time to play her own role. And no one does it better. The Thief by Clive Cussler. Isaac knows there’s more to the story when he and his agency rescue a pair of scientists who hold a new invention, and one scientist is killed. With war on the horizon, Isaac must discover the identity of an espionage agent looking to give Germany a big edge with the invention. Victims by Jonathan Kellerman. Despite the enemies Vita Berlin made, when she’s found murdered, psychologist Alex Delaware doubts the act was one of revenge. LAPD Lt. Milo Sturgis is skeptical until a second victim is found killed in the same grisly manner. Both Alex and Milo now believe a serial killer has emerged. As

they investigate, shocking truths are revealed that are even more chilling than Alex could have imagined.

Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. Edward, 24, couldn’t ignore the urgent phone call he received in Thailand about an accident that left his father in a coma, and injured his sister, Cara. He hadn’t spoken to his father in five years following a difference of opinion between them, but knew he had to return. Now he and his sister were at odds about whether life support on their father should be terminated.

Black-Horse Riders Philip Keith. Deep in the jungles of Vietnam, learn about a desperate last stand, an extraordinary rescue mission, and a battle America forgot. Let It Go: Forgive So You Can Be Forgiven by T.D. Jakes. An inability to forgive past offenses not only hurts us spiritually, but physically and emotionally. It robs us of joy, peace, and purpose, poisoning our souls with lethal toxins that drain every area of our life. Only by letting go and letting God can we have a life filled with peace, productivity, and power. Learning to let go and forgive means we must learn new styles of conflict resolution and anger management. Jakes explains how to do both.

Behavioral Health Alcohol Awareness Month Alcohol Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness of alcohol abuse and encourage people to make healthy, safe choices. Warning Signs of Alcohol Abuse If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you may have a problem with alcohol: • • • • • •
Do you drink alone when you feel angry or sad? Does your drinking ever make you late for work? Does you’re drinking worry your family? Do you ever drink after telling yourself you won’t? Do you ever forget what you did while drinking? Do you get headaches or have a hangover after drinking?

Strategies to Cut Back or Quit Drinking There are many strategies you can try to cut back or quit drinking. To get started: • • • •
Keep track of your drinking and set a drinking limit. Try to avoid places where heavy drinking occurs. Ask for help from a doctor, family, or friends. If you keep alcohol in your home, keep only a limited supply.
Get the Word Out Drinking too much alcohol can lead to health problems, including alcohol poisoning, hangovers, increased risk of heart disease, as well, alcohol related fatalities. This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, Behavioral Health Branch Prevention and Awareness encourages you to take this time to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of alcohol abuse. Some Good News Prime for Life (PFL) has published that the majority of our population utilizes low risk guidelines with alcohol. The research reports that 70% of those who use alcohol drink only 10% of all the alcohol manufactured. Of course it’s the 30% drinking 90% of the alcohol that causes our concern. Behavioral Health Branch Prevention and Awareness is joining other organizations across Beaufort County to honor Alcohol Awareness Month to prevent alcohol abuse in our community. If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. Keep track of how much you drink, avoid places where overdrinking occurs, and find new ways to deal with stress. If you are concerned about someone else’s drinking, offer to help. If someone believes they may have a drinking problem or is concerned about a friend’s drinking, visit AA’s Vigilant Vet’s: http://www. aa-intergroup.org/. This web site is a great resource for our men and women and allows one the anonymity that everyone deserves. Another great resource to assess one’s drinking is: www.DrinkingIQ.org For more information, you can also contact our local SAC unit at 228-1620 or Dan Evans Alcohol Prevention Specialist at 228-7752 or daniel.evans@usmc.mil
