MCCSHappenings HAPPENINGS MCCS
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
It Only Takes a Minute
It only takes a minute for your child to experience a life-threatening event such as Shaken Baby Syndrome or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Shaken Baby Syndrome typically occurs after a child experiences a head trauma by falling, being hit or forcefully shaken. SIDS has no symptoms or warning signs. Babies who die of SIDS seem healthy before being put to bed. If your child has one or more of the signs below, get help immediately.
It only takes a minute to reach out and offer your assistance to a parent who needs help. It only takes a minute of looking away for a child to get seriously injured. It only takes a minute to take a deep breath and not strike your child in anger. It only takes a minute to call for help. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM) and during this month we ask that you take time to reflect on how we can end child abuse within the military community. Child abuse is an unfortunate reality that has a profound effect on its victims. It affects the child, the family, the Marine or Sailor, the community and the mission.
Signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome: • Lethargy/decreased muscle tone • Extreme irritability • Decreased appetite, poor feeding or vomiting for no apparent reason • No smiling or vocalization • Poor sucking or swallowing • Difficulty breathing • Seizures • Head or forehead appears larger than usual or a soft-spot on head appears to be bulging • Inability to lift head • Inability of eyes to focus or track movement or unequal size of pupils
It is important to understand child abuse, how to prevent it, recognize it and the resources available to help families when it occurs. Every Marine, Sailor and civilian employee in the Tri-Command is considered a mandated reporter which means if you even suspect child abuse, you must call PMO at 228-6710. Our children cannot speak up for themselves and we must be their voice! Look for flyers posted around base to help you become better informed.
The New Parent Support Program offers Baby Boot Camp classes to expectant parents with a focus on prevention and awareness of SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome. We also teach parents how to cope with and sooth crying babies.
The national symbol for CAPM is the blue pinwheel. The pinwheel reminds us of a child-like sense of wonder and represents the happy, healthy and full lives that all children deserve. We will be having a pinwheel spotting contest throughout the month of April. Each week we will move our giant pinwheel somewhere within the Tri-Command. Once you spot it, go to the MCCS South Carolina Behavioral Health Branch Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ MCCSBehavioralHealthBranch, and tell us where you found it. All correct entries will be entered into a weekly drawing for a prize pack! We also hope that while looking for the pinwheel you will talk with your children about safety using some of the tips from our Facebook page. It’s a great way to have fun as a family and promote this important conversation.
For more information about NPSP, call 466-0082. You may also contact Cindy Neuhierl, NPSP Administrative Specialist, at 466-0082 or neuhierlcr@usmc-mccs.org.
For more information, please contact Ginny Wescott, Family Advocacy Program Prevention & Education Specialist, at virginia.c.wescott@ usmc-mccs.org or call 228-4110.
Signs of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: • Change in breathing pattern • Choking/gagging • Change in skin color - blue or pale • Blood in nose or mouth • A seizure episode

New Requirements for Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS)
The Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS) is a week-long seminar designed to prepare you for your return back into civilian life as a quality citizen and ensures that you have the tools needed for a smooth transition. Service Members who are transitioning out of the military, whether it’s separation, demobilization or retirement, need to be aware of the changes regarding career readiness standards and requirements. If you went to TRS prior to November 2013 chances are you are unaware of a new step needed to meet career readiness standards before you can check-out. From the effective date of 1 October 2013, all service members are required to complete a Capstone prior to their End of Active Service (EAS).

Capstone is the culminating activity in the transition process and verifies that you meet Career Readiness Standards (CRS) and have a viable plan for transition into civilian life. During your Capstone, you’ll meet with your Personal and Professional Development Advisor who will provide you with contact information to agency partners such as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Labor (DOL). Prior to your meeting with your Commander or designee the advisor will ensure that you have the needed documentation of a completed DoD standardized Individual Transition Plan, post separation budget, eBenefits premium account registration, career assess-
Another change to TRS allows you to elect an optional transition pathway: Employment, Entrepreneurship, Higher Education or Career Technical. Each pathway would provide you with invaluable information you may need for your career choice. You may take more than one. Spouses are welcome and encouraged to accompany Service Members during TRS. Service Members can receive more information about TRS and its changes by contacting their corresponding Transition Assistance Program office at 228-4574 (MCRD Parris Island) or 228-7701 (MCAS Beaufort).
