Heat Injury Prevention: Golf Cart Fee Waived Heat Injury Prevention is a common command concern each summer. By its very nature, the golf course is an area where heat injuries are possible. In order to ensure maximum safety of golfers at the golf course during very hot times and still allow them to play, customers beginning a round of golf from 1200 to 1600 every day of the week will not have to pay the standard electric cart fee. This policy is effective 8 July 2011. The intent is to reduce the chances of a golfer becoming a heat casualty. The policy currently establishes the time parameters 1200-1600, seven days a week. As the issue is further

MCCS is involved with two direct operation exchanges (DOX-T), one tactical field exchange (TFE), and four Warfighter Express Service (WES) Teams, which provide retail “runs” servicing downrange troops based in remote locations. Camp Leatherneck and Camp Dwyer both have one DOX-T and two WES Teams, while Camp Delaram has a single TFE in operation. Facts and Figures:

remote locations,” she noted. WES Team missions in Iraq would typically last between one to seven days; in Afghanistan, the WES Team missions last anywhere from three to 21 days, depending on weather, terrain and enemy actions.” The WES Teams’ arduous missions constantly face numerous challenges, including avoiding improvised explosive devices (IED), navigating limited roads and operating in a hostile combat environment. “The MCCS Marines place their mission to serve fellow Marines and service members first; this is evident as the MCCS Marine Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) is one of the five most deployed jobs in the Marine Corps,” Dunmeyer said. Marines and Sailors located at remote combat outposts (COP) and forward operating bases (FOB) rely on MCCS Marines to get health and beauty aids and needed items to their locations. If space on convoys or airlift permits, comfort items ranging from energy drinks, consumer electronics, and special requests are loaded and delivered.
Customer Feedback As far as the composition of the stock assortment, Dunmeyer said that customer feedback is welcome. “We solicit and receive feedback from customers on a regular basis,” she said. “Sales are always a good indicator of what the customer wants. It is especially important for us to receive information from the Marines located at forward operating bases, as they do not have the luxury of an exchange and only receive exchange services when operationally allowed. With the limited space on convoys, we use customer feedback to make the best use of our space and bring the customer only the most requested items, which include Monster energy drinks, consumables, and sports supplements.”

Laurel Bay Youth Center Garden The Laurel Bay Youth Center’s garden is thriving! The garden is a result of a USDA grant for teaching children about eating healthy and how vegetables grow. Each day, children water the garden in the morning and learn when food is ripe enough to pick. Tamika Curtis, Youth Center Program Assistant, teaches the children about organic gardening versus the use of pesticides and fertilizer and which foods are in season. She is the lead on this project as she developed her passion for gardening from her father and grandmother. “At the beginning of the project, many of the children didn’t know where vegetables came from. They now know that tomatoes come first from a flower, and they know which insects can actually help the garden grow,” explains Curtis.
sides lessons in cooking and nutrition, the garden has provided curriculum in a variety of subjects: • • • • • •
Reading: planting directions and recipes Woodworking: assembling and installing raised planting beds Science: Emphasis on elements required for successful growing-- proper soil, water, sun, and organic pest control methods. Math: measuring distances to insure proper placement of seedlings Photography: documenting stages of development and the project’s evolution Nutrition: integrating into cooking lessons when the children see the relationship between the food pyramid and the garden vegetables.
When asked what their favorite part of growing a garden was, children replied with, “growing it to help people be healthier,” “the watermelon!” and one child “likes that they can grow it together.” With raised beds in place, a fence purchased, and the bare necessities covered, Youth Center officials believe they’ll be able to maintain the garden for years to come. The children aided youth center staff in their selection of plants. If you take a visit to the garden you’ll find: • • • • • • • •

“Folly Beach: A Lowcountry Tale” by Dorothea Benton Frank. Frank, a native of the South, vividly captures the wild beauty, laidback atmosphere, earthy characters, and charming eccentricities of life in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. There’s no place like home, but for Cate Cooper, that’s not the most enticing statement. Her past haunts Folly Beach, the old hometown to which she returns when her husband dies only to discover that she is left with no money and no peace of mind. Soaking in the orange sunset she relives childhood memories and ghosts while realizing she has a new family and a new life. “One Summer” by David Baldacci. Jack, who’s terminally ill, tries to prepare his wife and children for his death. In a cruel twist of fate, his wife is killed in an auto accident, and the children are split up and sent to live with various relatives. Reuniting for the summer, Jack must figure out how to rebuild their lives as a family. “Against All Enemies” by Tom Clancy. As an alliance between Islamic terrorists and Mexican drug cartels threatens the safety of America’s southern border, CIA agent Max Moore is a man on a mission. It’s the closest thing to an impossible mission that Moore’s ever undertaken. “Carte Blanche 007: The New James Bond Novel” by Jeffery Deaver. James Bond is back in a cat-and-mouse game that takes him from the Balkans to London and ultimately to a searing climax on the African Continent with all the usual shocking plot twists readers have come to love from Deaver. This time Bond’s pitted against one of the most compelling and horrific villains in modern thriller fiction. “Now You See Her” by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge. Two years ago, Jeanine Fournier, 22, appeared to have the perfect life with her police-officer husband and their first child on the way. Then she uncovered a secret that caused her to run for her life and change her identity. “Before I go to Sleep” by S.J. Watson. Christine is told that she suffered a brain injury in an accident long ago that has robbed her of her memory. Behavioral Health Branch In today’s society equality is a goal often sought after in the work force, in relationships, and other societal roles, but there is one area that men and women are very different. Women are affected by alcohol more rapidly because they tend to have a higher proportion of body fat than men. Therefore, when women of average size consume one drink, it will have almost the same effect as two drinks for the average sized man.
MCCS HAPPENINGS
Women who eat little or skip food entirely will compound the effects of drinking alcohol. Women during their menstrual cycle experience hormone changes which also tend to impact the effects of alcohol. There are a number of steps both men and women can take to avoid problems with alcohol: 1). Know your limit. 2). Eat food while you drink. Food, especially high protein food such as meat, cheese and peanuts, will help slow the absorption of alcohol into your body.
3). Sip your drinks. Don’t participate in “chugging” contests or other drinking games. 4). Skip a drink now and then or alternate alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks. Having nonalcoholic drinks will help keep your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) down, as does spacing your alcoholic drinks. 5). Keep active. If you stay active you tend to drink less and to be more aware of any effects alcohol may be having on you. 6). Beware of high alcohol content drinks that can be deceptively tasting. Some drinks such as Long Island Ice teas, zombies and other fruit drinks, can be deceiving as the alcohol content is not easily detectable.
7).Use alcohol carefully in connection with pharmaceuticals. Ask your physician or pharmacist about any precautions or prohibitions and follow any advice received. (Bulk of article from reference material developed by David Hanson, PhD, University of the State of New York) Enjoy the summer, be safe and if you drink do so responsibly. The Military Academic Skills Program The Military Academic Skills Program (MASP) is a free, 3-week, permissive TAD program which helps improve skills in math and English for active duty personnel. Adult family members (18+) can attend on a space available basis. A Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required for admission into the program. This is an excellent resource for improving competencies at work, preparing to take various general educational and aptitude tests, and other academic pursuits. The next two program dates are 15 AUG – 2 SEP and 17 OCT – 4 NOV. To schedule a TABE, sign up for a MASP class, or for more information, call your base education office: Parris Island is 2282152 and Beaufort is 228-7484.
earned an associate, a bachelor, and a masters degree before he reached 20 years in the Corps. How did he do it? The answer basically is one or two classes at a time. Getting credits for his military schools and experience helped, as did taking a couple tests for credit (CLeP & DSST). Some classes he took in the classroom on base, some in a classroom in the local community, and some classes from a distance. For the distance education courses, he found a college that sent the work on CD-ROMS (no books to buy) and submitted his work online. The process can vary. How could you do this? What courses should you take? Our Education Services Specialists are available for answers to questions like these. Come by and see us or call us today at the Depot Education Office (228-2152) or the Station Education Office (228-7484).
