HEALTH & FITNESS

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

In August, parents are enrolling children in school, older students are entering college, and adults and the health care community are preparing for the upcoming flu season. This makes August a particularly good time to focus community attention on the value and importance of immunization. Make sure that your family and friends are up-to-date on their immunizations, keep regular appointments and track your immunizations carefully. Vaccines are responsible for the control of many infectious diseases that were once common in this country. Vaccines have reduced, and in some cases, eliminated many diseases that once routinely killed or harmed tens of thousands of infants, children and adults. The viruses and bacteria that cause vaccine-preventable diseases and death still exist and can infect people who are not protected by vaccines. Vaccinepreventable diseases have a costly impact, resulting in doctors visits, hospitalizations and premature deaths. Sick children can also cause parents to lose time from work. Maintaining high immunization rates protects the entire community by interrupting the transmission of disease-causing bacteria or viruses. This reduces the risk that unimmunized people will be exposed to disease-causing agents. This type of protection is known as community or herd immunity, and embodies the concept that protecting the majority with safe, effective vaccines also protects those who cannot be immunized for medical reasons. Kathy Williams, Semper Fit Health Promotion Coordinator For more information call 228-7616 or email williamska@usmc-mccs.org.

WATER SAFETY AND DROWNING PREVENTION The aquatic environment provides a place of enjoyable recreation and great physical fitness opportunities. Unfortunately, aquatic environments can possess unknown dangers if you are not prepared and aware of them. It is important that everyone learn and practice safe behaviors in and around water. According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that ten people drown every day in the U.S. Everyone should take precautions and learn about aquatic safety prior to entering the water. Taking steps to learn about water safety and ensuring that you are following safe aquatic behavior can save lives. When around water parents need to be watching their children actively. It only takes seconds for a drowning to occur; direct supervision at all times is a must. Swimming should always be conducted in a safe and supervised area clear of obstructions with lifeguards. When swimming at beaches, you should learn about and be aware of rip currents. If you are caught in one, it is important that you do not panic! Do not try to swim against the current, but in a diagonal pattern to get out of the current then back to shore. When boating, you should always practice safety and wear a lifejacket. Alcohol should never be consumed when you are boating or around water. A drowning can even occur at home. For those with home pools you need to insure that all fences are up, secured with gates locked. Water should never be left in mop bucket or in tubs. For those who PT in the water, breath holding activities are extremely dangerous and should be conducted under professional supervision.

READING LIST

P.K. Pinkerton and the Petrified Man By Caroline Lawrence (JUV FIC Lawrence) This action packed and thrilling adventure will keep you on the edge of your seat! P.K. stars in her second adventure as a detective who searches to find a murder witness before they are killed. Inside Out and Back Again By Thanhha Lai (JUV FIC Lai) A girl from Vietnam recounts her year of change, of dreams forgotten, grief and healing as she and her family journey from a war torn country to the Alabama countryside. She discovers strangeness in this new land as well as the strength of her family while they endure their quest for freedom and a new beginning. Dear America: A City Tossed and Broken By Judy Blundell (JUC FIC Blundell) The most recent title in the Dear America series focuses on a young girl forced to become a maid in San Francisco only to discover that the earthquake has destroyed lives and identities. Something Like Hope By Shawn Goodman (YA FIC Goodman) This award winning novel takes a close look at the confusing and self-destructive world of crack cocaine, unwed pregnancies and juvenile detention institutions. This heartbreaking

story will challenge your mindset about juvenile detention centers while still leaving some ray of hope for those who suffer. The Journey Back By Priscilla Cummings (YA FIC Cummings) Digger, a character in the award winning book Red Kayak, comes to life again in this gripping story of his narrow escape and dangerous journey home. Her Last Breath By Linda Castillo (MCN FIC Cast) A car accident takes on sinister shades of purpose when Amish Kate realizes her best friend's husband's death may have been planned. As she investigates, the town makes her wonder how safe and secure her Amish upbringing has really made her. The Heist by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg (MCN FIC Evan) How do you con a conman? Untied Through Reading

The Last Original Wife By Dorothea Benton Frank (MCN FIC Fra) Leslie Anne Greene Carter is the last original wife among her husband’s social set. His friends have all traded in the mothers of their children for a group of much tanner and toned women. Tired of pretending to be happy with a man who fails to ignite a spark in their marriage, Leslie visits her hometown of Charlestown in order to reclaim the once carefree woman she once was and discover the life she’s always dreamed of. Second Honeymoon by James Patterson and Howard Roughan (MCN FIC Pat) John and Sarah are on the case when honeymoon couples keep stepping into a deluxe honeymoon suite without coming back out, ever. John is deep into solving the case, while Sarah is hunting another ingenious serial killer, whose victims all have one chilling commonality. Island Girls By Nancy Thayer (MCN FIC Tha) The past comes to Nantucket when an island summer makes three sisters decide whether their relationships' frayed edges should be ripped away or mended.

Each year the libraries look forward to the summer reading program. All DoD Marine Corps libraries coordinate their summer reading programs for parents who might be transferred from one base to another. The reading form travels with the child to the new base location to help ease the transition to a new place.

Untied Through Reading (UTR) is introducing the Summer Slide program. When children don’t read during the summer, they lose at least two months of reading achievements. Parents are encouraged to record books for their kids to watch at home. This summer, UTR is hoping to build on your child’s natural curiosity and encourage imagination and innovation. Please call the MCAS Library at 2286131 to schedule a recording time.

Summer Reading Program

The summer reading program has been a great success again this year. Adults, teens and children combined to read away the summer. Four special programs were featured at the Air Station Library: Foods Around the World on 15 June, Urban Legends on 29 June, A Day at the Movies on 13 July and A Day in Japan on 27 July. A Day in Japan was designed for children and highlighted a country they might visit as Marine Corps dependents. The library staff even made sushi and taught children how to eat with chopsticks! Participants made fans and listened to stories. A fun time was had by all who attended including the library staff.
