Join us each month for an interactive get together that will focus on the topics that keep spouses not only surviving, but thriving. We will have opportunities to share what works and what doesn’t.

Read Your Way Through Deployment is NOT your “typical Book Club. In this class, you will get to know other spouses who are going through similar experience while discussing the different topics that each book presents. The books serve more as the conversation piece while the real insight occurs through the personal experience of each participant. In addition to discussing the books and the topics that are touched on, many of the authors have graciously agreed to take part in Skyped Author Chats. Many of them are looking to gain your insight in how you relate to their book!

Rock climbing wall

MCAS Beaufort Fitness Center As you begin to rock climb your body will be forced into some positions it may never have visited previously. Rock climbing is made up of a series of reaches with both your hands and feet. New climbers report sore forearms, hands, fingers and calf muscles. As you begin to learn to reach and stretch your limbs to find the very tiny holds that your fingers and toes will grip desperately in order to stay on the wall, your body will be working to provide balance, coordination and mental focus. Climbers will quickly begin to develop arm, back, finger and core strength as a result of the many reaches and holds that are repeated over and over through the completion of one climb. Climbers are successful with more difficult ascents only after working to improve the strength and endurance of their calves, shoulders, and core; their agility; strength-to-weight ratio; and flexibility in hips and hamstrings. Rock climbing is an excellent sport to participate in to increase your level of fitness. Tanya Tiessen (May 2006). Rock Climbing, Going up the walls! Retrieved from alive.com.

Last Orders: The War That Came Early by Harry Turtledove

When Stone Barrington travels to Los Angeles for a major political convention, it’s revealed that his close friend has given the delegates an unexpected choice. Behind closed doors, alliances are made and broken and a few people use the chaotic event to cover sinister plans. Stone will have to rely on discretions and persuasion if he wants to come out on top.

Turtledove writes an alternate account of World War II where the war begins in Czechoslovakia rather than Poland, eleven month earlier than it really came. The U.S. has only one enemy, Japan, and Hitler desperately declares war on the U.S. after his own people revolt.

LIBRARY

Paws to Read Summer Reading Program 2014 Our theme this year for our Summer Reading Program (SRP) was “Paws to Read”. It ran from 6 June through 1 August. June was a successful first month with over 250 registered patrons. Children, teens and adults tracked their reading progress and logged in over 600 books and 4K pages read!

The library had other activities during the eight weeks of the SRP. Both MCAS and MCRD libraries had a guessing jar where patrons could guess how many doggie treats were in the jar for a prize at the end of the program. There was also a donation box at both bases benefiting the Beaufort Animal Shelter. As of early July, the MCAS Library had already emptied their boxes twice! Patrons could also donate 5 cents for every five books read to the Animal Shelter. We will announce the totals and prize winners in the September Happenings.

Our kick-off was held on 7 June with a Hot Dog Roast. Our library was full of parents and children enjoying stories about cats and dogs, making foam sun-visors and having grilled hot dogs and chips. We had over 60 patrons eating lots of good food and having a great time!

All events held during the program have been shared on the MCCS Libraries Facebook page. You can like us on Facebook and see event photos at facebook.com/mccssclibraries.

The children really enjoyed bringing their favorite stuffed animal for the Parade and Sleep Over on 9 June. Judges picked winners of different stuffed animal categories such as smallest, largest or most spots. After the library closed, the staff was able to capture these mischievous animals getting into silly antics with the libraries’ digital camera.

We hope that everyone enjoyed the Summer Reading Program as much as we did. We are looking forward to next year’s program. Remember to bring your completed reading log to school and pick up any prizes by 15 August.

Our next event, held on 21 June, was a visit by Therapy Dogs International with Dick Hoagland and his staff who shared what this great organization is all about. Five therapy dogs and their handlers attended and after their stories were shared, the kids took turns reading to the dogs.
