Stress, depression and the holidays: Tips for coping

And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they're feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression too.

Tips to prevent holiday stress and depression When stress is at its peak it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past.

5. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don't try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts. Try these alternatives: Donate to a charity in someone's name, give homemade gifts or start a family gift exchange.

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression.

1. Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can't force yourself to be happy just because it's the holiday season. 2. Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. 3. Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to and be open to creating new ones. For example, if adult children can't come to your house, find new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videos. 4. Set aside differences. Try to accept family mem-

Don't let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don't go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. Continue to get

plenty of sleep and physical activity. 9. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Take a walk at night and stargaze. Listen to soothing music. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. 10. Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional 11. Take control of the holidays. Don't let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. Learn to recognize your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays.

Cheernastics

Cheernastics classes are for those who want to experience the best of both worlds. We will teach skills in both cheerleading and gymnastics. 8 week session, one class per week for one hour and fifteen minutes, $70.00. This class will be held at the PI Youth Gym, building 287, above Combat Camera. Class sizes are limited, advanced registration is required. Registration can be completed at the MCCS Semper Fit Recreation office building. 172 PI or the Laurel Bay MCCS Human Resources office. A HOLIDAY MESSAGE FROM SECRETARY OF VETERANS AFFAIRS ERIC K. SHINSEKI operation that would help turn the tide against North Korean and Chinese advances early in 1951.

On Christmas night, 1776, General George Washington led a poorlyclothed, poorly-equipped, and poorly-fed American Army across the icy Delaware River to attack well-equipped Hessian troops at the garrison in Trenton, New Jersey. The determination of the beleaguered Americans carried the day. They achieved total surprise, capturing 900 prisoners and their cannon.

For more than two centuries since the fateful Trenton crossing, American men and women have stood watch, safeguarding some of our most cherished traditions, while they and their families sacrificed theirs. On Christmas day, thousands of Americans will be home for the holidays. Yet, tens of thousands of others will continue their difficult and lonely missions of protecting us.

On another brutally cold Christmas day in 1944, American troops of the 101st Airborne Division, outnumbered, cutoff, surrounded by two panzer divisions at Bastogne, and lacking cold weather gear, ammunition, food and medical supplies fought with undaunted courage until relieved by General George Patton’s Third Army on December 26 and 27.

The VA honors, remembers and thanks the men and women of our Armed Forces and their families, who are serving us this holiday season around the world.

Six years later, in December 1950, Marines and Soldiers of X Corps surmounted overwhelming odds by breaking out of the Chinese encirclement at Chosin Reservoir. On Christmas Eve, their evacuation from the port of Hungnam completed a masterful retrograde

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN, LIGHT UP THE NIGHT BOAT PARADE, AND CHRISTMAS PARADE

Take your pick of holiday parades by land or sea in Beaufort. Join Main Street Beaufort, USA and the Beaufort Sail and Power Squadron on 8 December at 1730 for the Light Up the Night boat parade on the Beaufort River. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park provides the best view of the parade. Cost to participate is $15 per boat, but no commercial boats are allowed for the parade. Cash prizes will be awarded in five size categories for power boats and sailboats. The first boats will start arriving at the seawall at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park by 1700. Boats will make three passes by the seawall. Winners will be announced at the end of the event. Hot chocolate will be available courtesy of The Greenery.

Main Street Beaufort, USA proudly presents the 27th Annual A Night on the Town! This opening of the Christmas/Holiday shopping season takes place on Friday evening, 7 December, beginning at 1800, and ending at approximately 2100. A long standing tradition of the community, A Night on the Town is a mix of traditional and the contemporary. Shops will stay open late to welcome regular and new customers with special treats and a preview of their large and unique selection of items for the holidays to help get a head start of the holiday season!

The traditional Beaufort Christmas Parade will be 9 December at 1500 through the streets of downtown Beaufort. The Day After He Left For Iraq by Melissa Seligman. In the midst of war, military families are left behind to deal with everyday life. The author, a military wife, describes the pain and frustration beginning with the first day that her husband leaves. The first time her husband ships out the author’s son is newborn and her daughter is a toddler. She methodically and movingly describes the challenges she faces while fear for her husband's life is never far from the surface. Ultimately she comes to accept her life and appreciate the strength and determination of her children and husband. This book is a must read. Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green. This fictional account is based on the letters and journals of a Civil War nurse. Pioneering women nurses endured great hardships as they turned their backs on family, loves and life of privilege to serve on the battlefield and in the hospitals. This detailed account of women’s contributions during a time of war is the first in a series titled Heroines Behind the Lines. Confessions of a Military Wife by Mollie Gross. The author writes an honest, witty and often hilarious look at the life of a military wife who must learn to laugh rather than cry at things that are completely beyond her control. This book will have the reader laughing and crying at the same time. The Family’s Guide to the Military for Dummies by Sheryl Garrett and Sue Hoppin. This easy to follow handbook has expert tips for overcoming the challenges and taking advantage of the benefits available to the military. This unique support tool explains living on base, financial planning, dealing with deployments and much more. Courage After Fire by Keith Armstrong, Suzanne Best and Paula Domenici. This title is an important source of information and selfhealing for returning troops who must find courage and face the challenges of renewing marriages and building successful lives for themselves and family members.

Zinio, the world’s largest newsstand is now located on the library website. View full digital copies of your favorite magazines. The material is exactly the same as shown in print, plus some issues include features with video, audio and live links. The issues are available at any time on your computer or mobile device. You must be a library patron in good standing to use this service. Patrons may choose any of the magazine titles selected by the HQMC Library program. There are a total of 267 magazines on this new and exciting website.

We encourage all service members and veterans to share their military experiences with friends, family, and community at large. Basic Academic Skills Classes On Base We call it the Military Academic Skills Program (MASP). In a FREE 3-week course, military affiliated adults can improve their basic academic English and math skills. This may help you with tasks on your job, make academic courses easier, make test taking easier, etc. While NOT an ASVAB study course, a recent student reported increasing his ASVAB AFQT score by over 20 points. USMAP (United Services Military Apprenticeship Program) Get a job in the field you are working in. Apprenticeships are available in over 144 Military Occupational specialties. These FREE apprenticeships officially credit you for the work and training you do on your job. With a minimum of effort, you can earn a certificate of completion (Journeyman Status) from the Department of Labor.
