MCCS HAPPENINGS
HEALTH & FITNESS
TRIPLE “D” MONTH
For many, December is about celebrating the holiday season with family, friends and loved ones. Tragically for some, celebrations may end in the emergency room or in the morgue. Triple D, which stands for “Drugged, Drinking and Driving”, is an awareness campaign whose goal is to increase awareness of the fatal and catastrophic consequences of driving while impaired. Triple D is highlighted during December because the number of drivers who are fueled by alcohol and/or other drugs increases significantly during this month. Some consume these substances in greater quantities during celebrations while others may consume these substances due to seasonal sadness.
There is so much to lose from driving under the influence such as money from paying fines, court costs, increased insurance costs, jail time, attorney fees, lost time from work, suspended license (possibly for life) and the ultimate price of killing someone else and/or yourself. Here are some things you can do to help deter people from getting behind the wheel while under the influence: t *G ZPV SF IPTUJOH B QBSUZ DPMMFDU UIF LFZT PG ZPVS HVFTUT XIFO UIFZ arrive just as you would “check” their coat. t *G ZPV SF TFSWJOH BMDPIPM RVJU TFSWJOH JU BU MFBTU POF IPVS QSJPS UP UIF end of the party. Also, ensure non-alcoholic drinks are available.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention report that every day in the United States a least 30 people die in alcohol related motor vehicle crashes. That’s about 1 crash every 48 minutes or 10,950 fatal crashes per year. Drugs other than alcohol, such as marijuana, cocaine or prescription drugs, are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle deaths. Much too often these drugs are used in conjunction with alcohol which significantly increases impairment and can be a deadly combination. With statics like these it is very likely that the roads are crowded with people who are under the influence. Stay alert when driving because the impaired driver coming toward you will not be. Also, never get into a motor vehicle with someone who’s impaired or who has been drinking. Even one drink can relax a person so significantly that their reactions are slowed.

This holiday season we want you to have fun with family and friends but use sound judgment when you celebrate. Plan ahead to keep yourself and others from making bad choices and have a fun-filled, safe holiday! He will arrive at the MCRD Parris Island Library on 11 December at 0900 and will visit the MCAS Beaufort Library 12 December at 0930. There will be an opportunity to take pictures with Santa so don’t forget to bring your camera. Story time will be held while we wait for Santa to arrive. All parents and children are welcome to attend.
SANTA’S MAILBOX Each year the libraries act as a collection station for letters going to the North Pole. Santa’s elves have delivered these special mailboxes and there is plenty of time to make sure children’s letters make it to Santa before the Holidays. The elves will be picking up the mailboxes on 13 December so hurry in to get those letters to the North Pole! 8IFO ESPQQJOH Pò ZPVS MFUUFST QMFBTF SFNFNCFS UP BEE ZPVS SFUVSO address: Santa and his elves just might send a response!

LIBRARY READING LIST A Big Fat Crisis: The Hidden Forces Behind the Obesity Epidemic and How We Can End It by Deborah A. Cohen MD (MCN 362. 1963) Dr. Cohen explains how obesity can be overcome in today’s society and includes unconventional strategies to battle the obesity epidemic before it is too late. Newtown: An American Tragedy by Matthew Lysiak (MCN 371.782) Newtown: An American Tragedy provides a journalistic account of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Using previously undisclosed emails, police reports, in-depth interviews and email correspondence between Adam Lanza’s mother and her friends, Lysiak examines the facts to consider whether the murderer was driven by mental illness or a violent video game obsession gone too far.
King and Maxwell by David Baldacci Tyler Wingo, a teenage boy, learns the awful news that his father, a soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Then the extraordinary happens: Tyler receives a message from his father after his supposed death. Tyler hires Sean and Michelle to solve the mystery surrounding his father but the more they uncover, the more Sean and Michelle wonder how much of the man's life was a cover-up for something far greater. Danger lurks around every turn as the duo tries to help the teen and solve the mystery behind a message from beyond the grave.
Civilian Warriors: The Inside Story of Blackwater and the Unsung Heroes of the War on Terror by Erik Prince (MCN 355.354) Written by Blackwater’s Erik Prince, founder and former CEO, Civilian Warriors tells the often shocking story of the rise and fall of the notorious military contractor. Prince’s narrative includes newly-revealed details about many controversial events while highlighting Blackwater’s initial objectives that helped the State Department and the Pentagon fight the War on Terror.
Mirage by Clive Cussler with Jack Du Brul The story of a U.S. destroyer that vanished out of Philadelphia in 1943 as a result of a Navy experiment with electromagnetic radiation has been considered a hoax. Now, Juan Cabrillo and his Oregon colleagues aren’t so sure and try to seek answers in the wake of the rumors that a new weapon is about to be auctioned. As Cabrillo races to find the truth, he discovers there is even more at stake than he could have imagined— but by the time he realizes it, he may already be too late.
Baby Knows Best: Raising a Confident and Resourceful Child, the RIE™ Way by Deborah Carlisle Solomon (MCN305.9089) Can babies really raise themselves? This guide for new parents is based on Resources for Infant Educaring (RIE™) founder Magda Gerber’s belief that babies naturally teach themselves as they grow. Parents learn how to create healthy sleep patterns, grant crucial playtime, and set clear, consistent limits that will give their baby room to grow.
Dust by Patricia Cornwell Terror comes in many colors when a disturbing call leads Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta to a dead young woman found on a Massachusetts campus rugby field. It doesn't take long to establish a link between the murder and a string of similar Washington, D.C. homicides. As Scarpetta's FBI husband hunts the Capital Murderer in D.C., Scarpetta is led deep into the dark world of designer drugs, drone technology, organized crime and shocking corruption at the highest levels.
End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy by James L. Swanson (MCN 973.922) As the world watched one minute surrender to the next, an entire nation changed and grieved. Relive the fateful day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated with a minute-by-minute account from the Kennedys' arrival in Texas through the shooting in Dealey Plaza and the shocking aftermath that continues to reverberate in our national consciousness fifty years later.
Tatiana: An Arkady Renko Novel by Martin Cruz Smith More than mere coincidence connects reporter Tatiana Petrovna's death in Moscow to a mob billionaire murdered that same week, and investigator Arkady Renko is out to prove it. He'll travel through dangerous New Russia as he ponders the tapes he discovered of Tatiana’s voice recounting chilling crimes. But when his quest takes him to a so-called “secret city” set apart from Russia there may be no going back.
Hero by Rhonda Byrne Rhonda Byrne, the author of the international bestseller The Secret, inspires you to unlock the door to your dreams with a key you were born already holding.
