taining control (and keeping toothbrush/toothpaste in your mouth!). If you have trouble with coordination, you may want to try heel raises. • TV Room —See how many bicycle legs (lean back, legs in air, pedal motion) you can do during the commercial breaks. Try to increase the number of pedals each break.

February is American Heart Month

• Room to room — Play chase with the dog, the kids, or the cat. Or, when the phone rings, race whoever is around to see who can get to it first (winner gets a foot rub!).

February is American Heart Month and it’s time to continue that New Year’s Resolution of getting in better shape! You don’t have to sacrifice taste to keep your heart healthy. There are some good-for-your-heart foods that just might surprise you. • Cheese: In moderation, cheese can be a good thing. It contains calcium that can keep your blood pressure under control. Cheese often contains saturated fats, so you may want to go for low-fat or partskim types. Try not to eat more than an ounce or two a day. • Garlic: The cloves contain a chemical called allicin that has been shown to relax blood vessels, which means your blood can flow smoothly. To get the biggest bang, crush — don’t chop — cloves before cooking. • Grape Juice: The purple kind from your childhood has the same heart-healthy compounds as red wine to help increase HDL (good) cholesterol, reduce your risk of developing blood clots, and relax your blood vessels. • February - The month of love: cards, flowers – and chocolate: When it comes to chocolate, you may want to go for the dark kind with a high cocoa content. It tends to be loaded with epicatechin, which can keep cholesterol from gathering in blood vessels and reduce the risk of blood clots.

For more ideas on healthier eating and exercise call Semper Fit Health Promotion at 2287616 or williamska@usmc-mccs.org. • Beans: These fiber-rich legumes help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Red kidney beans are one of the best sources of fiber, with a whopping 13 grams per cup — about half the amount of fiber you need in a day. Source: Journal of the American College of Nutrition, June 2004. Take the idea of a home gym to a whole new level — and find something different to do in any room while you’re working on other things. You’ll get active, and it won’t take up any time at all. • Kitchen —While chatting on the phone, do heel raises or leg lifts while lightly balancing one hand on the counter. • Bathroom —While brushing your teeth do “speed squats.” With feet, hip-width apart, bend at the knee and hip while keeping your upper body tall. Come down (no lower than knee level) and up as quickly as you can while still main-

Dance I, Introduction to Dance, ages 4 & 5 Parris Island Community Center This class will incorporate pre-ballet, beginning tap and creative movement. Class includes development of basic steps, vocabulary and movement while maintaining a fun and positive atmosphere. Students will learn short dances and play games that enhance cognitive and social development and prepare them for further ballet training. There is a major emphasis on cooperation, participation and encouragement. Attire: pink or black leotard, white tights and pink ballet shoes. Hair in bun or pulled back. Dance II , Tap & Ballet Combination, ages 6 to 8 Parris Island Gym Dance II will introduce and review the basics of tap & ballet as well as the fundamental skills, body control and discipline. This class builds coordination, syncopation, balance and thinking skills. Emphasis is on cooperation, participation and encouragement. This is great for first time dancers or returners. Attire: pink, black or white leotard, white tights and pink ballet shoes. Hair in bun or pulled back. Ingredients: • 1/3 cup light garlic-and-herbs spreadable cheese (such as Boursin light)

The nutty, cheesy filling spices up chicken breasts and is a snap to make. Toast the almonds in a skillet before you cook the chicken and you’ll have just one pan to clean. Serve with couscous and green beans.

• 1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted, coarsely chopped, and divided • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided • 4 (6-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 1/2 teaspoons butter

1. Combine spreadable cheese, 3 tablespoons almonds, and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley in a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Cut a horizontal slit through thickest portion of each breast half to form a pocket. Stuff 1 1/2 tablespoons almond mixture into each pocket; secure each pocket with a wooden pick. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. 3. Heat butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add chicken to pan; cook 6 minutes on each side or until done. Remove from pan; cover and let stand 2 minutes. Top chicken with remaining 1 tablespoon almonds and remaining 1 tablespoon parsley.

13 Payments May Affect Retirees Taxes Your 1099R tax statement includes 13 payments this year. This is not a mistake. The pay schedule for retirees was adjusted in mid-2011 to comply with the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. Because of the change in the law, military retired pay is now processed on the first day of the month. When that day falls on a weekend or national holiday, the pay date is moved to the previous business day. This means your payment normally scheduled for 3 January 2012 was issued on 30 December 2011. As a result of the second payment in December, you were issued a total of 13 payments (for tax purposes) instead of the normal 12 in the 2011 tax year, which may increase your tax liability. Because 1 January is always a federal holiday, going forward, DFAS will always process your January pay the previous December. So in 2012 and beyond, you will receive the normal 12 pay checks. Please contact your tax advisor or the Internal Revenue Service if you have further questions on this subject.

Data Breach Letters are being mailed from Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to affected military clinic and hospital patients regarding a data breach involving personally identifiable and protected health information. On 14 September 2011 SAIC reported the loss of backup tapes containing electronic health care records used in the military health system (MHS) to capture patient data. The data may include Social Security numbers, addresses and phone numbers, and some personal health data such as clinical notes, laboratory tests and prescriptions. There is no financial data such as credit card

or bank account information, on the backup tapes. The risk of harm to patients is judged to be low since retrieving the data on the tapes would require knowledge of, and access to, specific hardware and software and knowledge of the system and data structure. As a precaution, the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) determined that SAIC should notify potentially impacted persons or households of this incident by letter. As directed by TRICARE Management Activity (TMA), SAIC will provide credit monitoring and credit restoration services for one

year for patients requesting them. The credit restoration services being provided exceeds current industry standards for responding to a data breach. The SAIC Incident Response Center is available to answer your questions, including helping you with signing up for the credit monitoring, Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm eastern time. Concerned patients should call the response center, to ask questions and verify authenticity of the letter, toll free: (855) 366-0140. Behavioral Health Alcohol as a Sleeping Aid Often alcohol is seen as a panacea, or a “cure all”. When folks are struggling to find ways to “wind down”, or prevent insomnia, sometimes a few drinks is seen as a quick answer to produce a good night’s sleep. Alcohol research reveals that although alcohol can initially deepen sleep during the early part of the night, it disrupts sleep patterns during the later part of the night (Journal: Alcoholism: Clinical &Experimental Research). This phenomenon is called: “Rebound Effect”. Alcohol reduces the quality and restfulness of your sleep. This happens because alcohol’s initial sedative effects are not stabilizing. As alcohol leaves the body, the brain becomes agitated and restless. When a brain is anesthetized by alcohol, it is similar to a beach ball being held underwater. As alcohol is metabolized, the brain is now similar to that same beach ball being released from underwater, thus, the “rebound effect”. The effect of alcohol on the brain simulates this pressure or force that produces this drastic swing leaving an individual with: (1) More restlessness, (2) More interrupted sleep, (3) Lighter sleep (fewer periods of deep, restorative sleep), (4) Shorter sleep (wake up earlier). The overall effect of using alcohol as a sleep aid is less restorative sleep and a lack of refreshment and/or restfulness. Suggestions: (1) Instead of using alcohol to manage stress, use healthier coping mechanisms, (2) Avoid using alcohol, caffeine, or tobacco a few hours before going to bed to avoid the “rebound” effect and (3) establish a routine that includes physical exercising, like yoga or stretching prior to bed time if anxious. If you are relying on alcohol to manage stress, sleep better, or for other coping reasons, assess your relationship with alcohol by visiting: http://www.aa-intergroup.org/ Dan Evans, Daniel.evans@usmc.mil Alcohol Prevention Specialist (AAPS) 228-7752 Behavioral Health Branch
