HEALTH & FITNESS
STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY: THE NEW COMMUNITY COUNSELING PROGRAM The Marine Corps envisions a totally fit and ready Corps in which Marines and family members cope with stress early, look out for one another and readily access counseling and prevention services. Over the past decade, the demand for these psychological health services has increased dramatically. This rising need has been addressed through a variety of programs and resources from both the medical community and Commands. One of these programs, which has recently been implemented by the Marine Corps, is a community health approach known as the Community Counseling Program (CCP). According to the article “Providing the Highest Quality of Care to Marines, attached Sailors and their Families”, published in the December 2013 - January 2014 of BH 360, the “…community health approach provides increased access to counseling by integrating counseling into the community, which in turn will help
normalize help seeking.” The establishment of the CCP involves the separation of Family Advocacy and non-medical general counseling to better manage and plan for behavioral health risk and develop protective factors. The hallmark of the CCP will be the confidentiality of the Marines, Sailors and family members requesting services much like seeking services out in town. The focus will be on screening, prevention and intervention of stressors and problems with a desire to reduce the need for referrals to more problem specific programs like Family Advocacy and Substance Abuse. Some of the issues presented to the CCP might include relationship or personal problems and coping with stress as well as other non-medical emotional and/or personality specific concerns. Positive outcomes are made possible because confidential early intervention is specifically designed to help clients
recognize their role in the problems and/or issues they are having. Treatment plans are developed by both the client and therapist and will include clinical interventions that target necessary behavior changes and improved decision making. The CCP provides confidential counseling as a means to increase overall mission readiness and, even more importantly, to improve the lives of those seeking these services. The Tri-Command currently has four CCP clinicians, all state licensed providers, whose typical work day is from 0730-1600. They can also provide services later in the day or on weekends if desired or necessary. If you or someone you know might benefit from this program please call the CCP on MCRD Parris Island at 228-2044 or on MCAS Beaufort at 228-6126. Shari Mattos-Alcorn Branch Head, Behavioral Health
You Make a Difference—Pass It On! Suicide Prevention is an all hands evolution with the goal of empowering individuals to identify, prevent and intervene early to save lives. Suicide prevention provides resources that help individuals recognize and understand suicide related behaviors including risk and protective factors. It is also a program designed to educate individuals on how resources can be used not only by Marines and Sailors who need a helping hand, but also by family members and friends. The following prevention resources are available for free: • Chaplains • Marine Corps Suicide Prevention Program Officers • Behavioral Health Counselors: 228-6126/228-2044 • The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273TALK(8255) • DSTRESS Line: 1-877-476-7734 • Military OneSource 24/7: 1-800-342-9647 For more information or questions regarding suicide prevention resources, contact Jeanette Smith, Suicide Prevention Specialist at 228-1569 or jeanette.l.smith@usmc-mccs.org.
