MCCS HAPPENINGS

Calorie Burners

July is National Recreation & Parks Month

Activities That Turn Up the Heat When it comes to burning calories, most people want to get as much mileage out of their exercise as possible. For many, the more calories they burn, the better they feel about their workouts. While energy expenditure should not be the only measure of a good workout (remember, it’s good for you and makes you feel pretty good, too), it is helpful to know what a given activity might be costing you in terms of calories. A word of caution, though, about counting calories. Simply burning more calories will take you only so far down the road to better health. A well-balanced, low-fat diet, plenty of rest and a healthy attitude are also essential. And, of course, all things in moderation—even exercise. The numbers on this chart correspond to how many calories individuals of various weights burn per minute during different activities. Simply multiply this number by how many minutes you perform a given activity. For example, a 160-pound man jogging will burn about 12.4 calories per minute, or 372 calories during a 30-minute jog. There are a few things that you should keep in mind as you review this chart. With exercise, it really is true that you get out of it what you put into it. Simply showing up for class and going through the motions isn’t going to do you much good. To get the most out of your exercise session, give it your all, even if your all is less than what others might be doing. And don’t forget to look for little ways to increase the number of calories you burn each day. You might be surprised to learn that it is possible to burn more calories simply by becoming more active in your daily life. Doing things like taking the stairs, parking farther from your destination and doing chores around the house are great ways to burn additional calories. Two thousand steps equals approximately one mile of walking. By walking 10,000 steps a day, the average person will burn up to 3500 calories per week—roughly the caloric equivalent of 1 pound of fat. Healthy Recipes

We all need some time to relieve stress and just enjoy life. If you don’t have the time for a long getaway, try taking a few hours or a couple of days away from work. We have some wonderful opportunities right here in Beaufort County. If you like to fish or just enjoy nature, try an afternoon at one of the ponds on MCAS Beaufort, Elliott Beach, or Third Battalion Pond on MCRD Parris Island. All of these offer you some lovely views and a relaxing atmosphere. If fishing isn’t your thing, perhaps a little golf. There is a free driving range on the Air Station and a beautiful golf course on Parris Island. There are numerous items for rent at Outdoor Recreation for very reasonable prices. Beaufort County offers a variety of beaches and other opportunities to enjoy life and connect with others, as well. Many studies indicate that staying active gives us a better outlook on life and helps us to cope with those bumps in the road. Also, keeping some childlike qualities are useful as well – humor, curiosity, imagination, playfulness, open-mindedness, a willingness to experiment, an eagerness to learn, living in the present, forgiveness, love, flexibility, energy and honesty. sacrifices and years of service, relatively modest increases in out-of-pocket costs will not only help stabilize the system and make it more accountable, but will also be looked upon as being appropriate by the American taxpayer.” Congress, however, would have none of it, as veterans and their advocates deluged lawmakers with e-mails and letters opposing any increase and warned of severe consequences at the polls for any member supporting higher premiums. The retirees argue that low-cost health insurance is a benefit they earned, often with blood shed on the battlefield. Those over 65, many of whom were recruited in an era when the armed services promised free care for life to those who stayed in uniform for 20 years or more, have been particularly active in opposition to any premium increases.

Tricare User Fee Speaking at the Navy League’s annual symposium at the National Harbor Convention Center the leaders of the three naval services argued 3 MAY for an increase in the fees retired military personnel and their families pay for health care, something Congress has refused to approve for more than a decade. Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations; Gen. James Conway, the Marine Corps commandant; and Adm. Thad Allen, Coast Guard commandant, all complained about the soaring costs of healthcare and said increased contributions by the retirees for their Tricare coverage is overdue. Responding to a question about the impact of healthcare costs on their increasingly tight financial conditions, all three leaders said that was a growing problem. Roughead noted that on top of the expense for his active-duty force the expense of the half a million retirees “eats into our other programs.” Conway was more direct, saying there has not been an adjustment in the retiree’s payments for Tricare in two decades “and that needs to be addressed.” Allen, who is a month from retirement, said he had just signed up for Tricare Prime, the

top-level defense medical coverage, for himself and his wife and paid only $465. “Something needs to be done about that. Along the same subject, Gail Wilensky, an economist and former president of the Defense Health Board, a Pentagon advisory group on health care issues, told AOL News retirees and their advocates are “too strong, and the Congress is, shall we say, less so. No one disputes that the nation’s veterans have made tremendous sacrifices and deserve generous benefits,” Wilensky said. Her task force took care to recommend that troops on active duty and their families continue to receive full health care coverage at no cost, she added. But with health care costs rising and the nation at war, it’s reasonable to ask that those who’ve completed their service share in the increasing cost of their health care, she said. “The majority of costs reside with retirees,” Three years ago, Wilensky cochaired a Pentagon task force that urged Congress to boost the average premium to $1,100, spreading the increase over several years to lessen its impact. “Americans everywhere are paying high costs for health care,” the task force report noted. “While military retirees deserve a more generous benefit because of their

Tricare Gray Area Retirees Retired National Guard and Reserve personnel may be able to buy Tricare health coverage as soon as 1 OCT 2010. This is part of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010. Until this became law, reserve-component retirees did not have the option of Tricare coverage until reaching the age of 60. After the start-up date, which was given to NGAUS by an official with the Tricare Management Activity, these so-called “gray area” retirees who are not yet 60 may purchase Tricare Standard and Extra coverage. The law requires premium rates to equal the full cost of the coverage. This differs from Tricare Reserve Select for reserve members, who pay 28% of the cost of coverage. Premium rates are not yet available for the “gray area” retirees’ coverage. For more information, go to http://tricare.mil. In order to keep you up on military retiree news, some important articles will be posted on http://mccs-sc.com. SERVICES New Contractor for Tailor Shops a Good Fit Evelyn O’Connell has owned Oxford Cleaners in Port Royal for 11 years, and her business is now the new contractor for the MCRD Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort Tailor Shop. While O’Connell has been the contractor for the Dry Cleaners on both bases for over two years, she’s thrilled to become the contractor for the Tailor Shops. O’Connell has 28 years of professional sewing experience and employs skilled tailors as well. Kim Kelley, a seamstress at the shop, has over 30 years of tailoring experience. O’Connell says other members of her staff are just as knowledgeable and while they specialize in military clothing they also are skilled in civilian alterations. The Tailor Shops are happy to alter both military and civilian clothing on base. Turnaround time has been significantly reduced because of O’Connell’s experienced staff because customer

service is a priority. The number of employees has increased, and therefore productivity has as well. O’Connell’s business is family owned as she runs it with her husband, GySgt Richard O’Connell (Ret.), who retired from the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort. Both of their daughters, Casey McKinley and Brandy Carter, work for her as well and migrate between the dry cleaners and the tailor shops. “We really are a team. Everyone works together and helps to fill in the gaps when we need it. Integrating the tailor shops with the dry cleaners makes sense and helps us to get to know our customers better,” says O’Connell. O’Connell’s employees include: Casey McKinley, Brandy Carter, Elma Hamilton, Kim Kelley, Joyce Widener, Danny Doe, Rose Eugene, and Kathy Ponce. They are all pictured in the photo below.

A Bookworm’s Recommendations July’s pick: “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick “Mayflower” is the story of the Pilgrims’ journey to America. The Pilgrims, also known as Separatists or Puritans, broke away from the Church of England because they believed that the church should return to its’ roots and be purged of corruption. They fled to Leiden, Holland in 1608 and lived there until 1620. Shortly after their arrival in America, the Pilgrims encountered Samoset, a native who had learned to speak English from English fishermen. He introduced them to Massasoit and Squanto, the leader of the Pokanoket Indians and an interpreter who would become vital to the Pilgrims. In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World.

New at the Library Adults “Greetings from Afghanistan, Send More AMMO” by Benjamin Tupper. Now Tupper reveals life under fire and pulls the reader into the realities of war with poignancy, humor and vivid reality offering a unique and compelling firsthand view of the Afghan people, their culture and the battle for survival which began long before the Americans arrived “Hitler’s Holy Relics: A True Story of Nazi Plunder and the Race to Recover the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire” by Sidney Kirkpatrick. Before the war the Nazis systematically plundered any arts or antiques in their quest for world domination. This untold story explains how Horn searched in the rubble only to have his final report marked top secret for decades to come. “My Name is Mary Sutter” by Robin Oliveira. On the eve of the Civil War, a young midwife travel to Washington DC to pursue her dream to become a doctor and surgeon while determined to overcome all prejudices against women who would peruse a medical career.

4th of July Safety The Fourth of July is a fantastic day of celebration with family and friends, but is also one of the more dangerous holidays of the year.

2. Do not allow young children to play with fireworks under any circumstances, even with adult supervision. Sparklers, considered by many the ideal “safe” firework for the young, burn at very high temperatures and can easily ignite clothing. Children cannot understand the danger involved and cannot act appropriately in case of emergency. 3. Older children should only be permitted to use fireworks under close adult supervision. Do not allow any running or horseplay. 4. Always have water available to put out any sparks or flame that may occur when using fireworks. For more recommendations and safety tips, visit http://parents.com/holiday/ july-4th/safety/fireworks-safety/.

You can keep your Independence Day fun and safe when you and your children follow the proper safety tips. “Every type of consumer firework has been associated with serious injury or death,” says American Academy of Pediatrics President Louis Z. Cooper, MD. “Too many children have become victims of these preventable injuries. We encourage parents and childrn who want to enjoy fireworks to do so at public displays, conducted by professionals.” So what can you do to protect yourself and your family? The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has these recommendations: 1. Know the law regarding fireworks. The following are the state of South Carolina’s laws pertaining to firework activities. (Source: http://www.fireworkssupermarket.com/StateLaws) Specifically permitted: Items meeting requirements of the CPSC except those noted below. Specifically prohibited: Small rockets less than ½” in diameter and 3” long. Age of purchase 14 years, unless accompanied by parent.
