MCCS MCCSHappenings HAPPENINGS

July’s Health Observance is UV Protection Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation without protection may cause conditions that can lead to vision loss, including cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and growths, including cancer. That’s over the long term, but even a day without protection is harmful. Like skin, the eye surface can burn. The solutions: sport sunglasses and don a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t be fooled by cloudy days either. The invisible rays are just as present then. When it comes to sunglasses, the lens color and price aren’t an issue. The ability to block UV light doesn’t depend on the darkness of the lens. Many $10 sunglasses provide just as much protection — or sometimes even more — than a $100 pair. Look for glasses that block 99% to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B rays. You may even want to go for the wrap-around style so the rays can’t enter from the sides.

Access to Official Military Personnel Files for Veterans and Next-of-Kin Military personnel records can be used for proving military service or as a valuable tool in genealogical research. Most veterans and their next-of-kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) and other military and medical records several ways. For veterans service records from WWI to present you may use the eVetRecs online system or download form SF-180 to mail or fax your request to the National Military Personnel Record Center (NPRC).

• If you suspect your records may have been involved in the 1973 fire, also include: • Place of discharge • Last unit of assignment • Place of entry into the service, if known All requests must be signed and dated by the veteran or next-of-kin. If you are the next of kin of a deceased veteran, you must provide proof of death such as a copy of death certificate, letter from funeral home, or published obituary.

The NPRC eVetRecs system creates a customized order form to request information from your, or your relative’s, military personnel records. You may use this system if you are: • A military veteran or • Next of kin of a deceased former member of the military. The next of kin can be any of the following: • Surviving spouse that has not remarried • Father or mother • Son or daughter • Sister or brother

You can also mail or fax a signed and dated SF-180 records request to the NPRC. Most, but not all records, are stored at the NPRC. Be sure to use the address specified by the instructions on the form. • NPRC Fax Number: 314-801-9195 • NPRC Mailing Address: National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records 1 Archives Drive St. Louis, MO 63138 314-801-0800

Your request must contain certain basis information for the center to locate your service records. This information includes: • The veteran’s complete name used while in service • Service number • Social security number • Branch of service • Dates of service • Date and place of birth (if the service number is not known)

For more information, please go to www.archives.gov/veterans/ military-service-records.

Behavioral Health

Summer is upon us, and with that comes a multitude of great activities that Beaufort has to offer-- from water activities, to festivals, to the highly-celebrated Independence Day fireworks shows. With all this fun in the sun, it’s easy to want to “throw a few back,” but there are a few basic rules for safe summer fun. High-risk alcohol usage poses a myriad of dangers, particularly in this summer heat. While outside it’s important to remain hydrated, but some drinks, including alcoholic beverages, actually increase the likelihood of dehydration. Alcohol blocks the production of a hormone nec-

17

essary for water reabsorption. As a result, just a few ounces of alcohol can cause a person to excrete over a quart of urine. If concerned about dehydration, increase the intake of other beverages such as juice or water and avoid caffeinated beverages which have the same diuretic effect as alcohol. According to the CDC, 70% of water-related fatalities involve alcohol. Alcohol impairs coordination and balance, and the sun and heat intensify this impairment which can lead to accidental drowning. Additionally, one in five boating deaths was also attributed to alcohol usage. While going out to the sandbar may be fun, it is important to remember that in the state of South Carolina it is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol. If you’re drinking, stay out of the water or close to shore. The impairments caused by alcohol could make it difficult to react properly if caught in a rip-tide or other dangerous situation. Summer is all about having fun, relaxing, and enjoying time with family and friends. Part of keeping summer safe and enjoyable for all is making low-risk choices: (1) Drink no more than 1 standard drink per hour and no more than 4 on any given day for men and 3 on any given day for women. A standard drink is equal to one 12 oz beer, a 5 oz glass of wine, or a 1.5 oz shot. (2) Keep hydrated with juice and water, and never drink on an empty stomach. (3) Remember that it’s okay to abstain. Rebecca Ponce, Marine and Family Trainer, Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Awareness, 2282489, poncera@usmc-mccs.org

Sad Story Don’t Let it Happen to You

A Marine was in the education office the other day; he is preparing to get out of the Marine Corps in a couple months. He has been an electrician for the Marine Corps and wants to be an electrician in the civilian community. If he had done the USMAP Apprenticeship Program while active duty (can take one to 3+ years), he would have been ready to start work in a well-paid position. Instead, he will have to start at the bottom rung, and will likely need to go to a school and take numerous tests to gain credentials he could have had from the Uniform Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP). Military careers can last 4 years or over 30 years; then most people look for a civilian career. USMAP doesn’t require additional training or work, but it does require the active duty time. USMAP gives the Active Duty Military Member a Certificate of Journeyman Status from the Department of Labor. That would help you get that job – possibly at higher pay – when you are ready to transition. Don’t wait until your last few months in service to prepare for your future. For more information, go to https://usmap.cnet.navy.mil/ or contact your local Education Services Office by calling MCAS Beaufort at 228-7484 and MCRD/ERR Parris Island at 228-2152.

Test Proctoring

Members of our Military Community often need to have tests proctored for college courses, industry requirements and more. If you are a member of the local military community and need to take a proctored test, contact our test examiners to determine if our free services are right for you. In addition to proctoring college courses, we have many active duty military-only tests and can guide you to CLEP, DSST, SAT, ACT test prep sites, etc. For more information, call your closest Education Office: MCAS Beaufort (843) 228-7474 & MCRD/ERR Parris Island (843) 228-2086.
