HEALTH & FITNESS Proper Disposal of Unwanted, Unused, Expired Medication and Other Hazardous Chemicals Until a few years ago, I was stockpiling my family’s medication because I didn’t know how to dispose of it. I was told not to flush it because the chemicals could get into our drinking water and harm the environment. Now there is a way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication through Take Back Medication events. You can also dispose of hazardous chemicals at the same time! This is especially great for families PCSing this summer. Take Back Medication events are an initiative by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). According to the DEA, take-back events are more than just a convenient way to dispose of medication and hazardous chemicals as they address public safety and health issues: Prescription drugs that languish in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high; more Americans (6.8 million) currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens like LSD, and inhalants (sniffed household products) combined, according to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.¹ Beaufort County is collecting medication and hazardous chemicals for proper disposal in an effort to prevent them from harming the environment. The list of products containing contaminants includes cleaning materials, batteries, paints, turpentine, antifreeze, oil, gas, insecticides, poisons, photo and hobby chemicals, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs of all types, propane tanks and any other products that have labels containing the words WARNING, DANGER or CAUTION. Expired and leftover medicines include prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements.
26 April - Town of Hilton Head, 40 Summit Drive, Hilton Head Island
Officials ask that residents tighten caps and lids on products, leave them in their original containers and keep medications separate from hazardous materials to speed collection. They recommend placing the containers in boxes in the trunk or back of car on roundup day. Fireworks, ammunition and smoke detectors will not be accepted.
3 May – Shanklin Public Works, 142 Shanklin Road, Burton, SC, off Hwy 21 near the Marine Corps Air Station. This is a drive-thru event. You never even have to get out of your car. Just drive through and drop off. There will be personnel and volunteers to direct you to the appropriate drop off site.
Only residential materials are being accepted at this event. Commercial contractors or businesses with hazardous products that require disposal may call Solid Waste and Recycling at 255-2734.
For more information, contact: bcgov.net/recycle or call 255-2734. You may also contact Drug Demand Reduction, Gayle Wierzbicki, at gayle.wierzbicki@usmc-mccs.org or 843-228-2465.
The schedule for 2014 for the Take Back Medication Initiative and hazardous chemical disposal event is:

HEALTH & FITNESS 5 Reasons Not to Binge Drink on St. Patrick’s Day (or Ever!) 5. Drinking large volumes of alcohol can make you more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. As if waking up with a stranger isn’t bad enough, the risks for sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies also increase with this behavior.
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction, binge drinking is consuming enough alcohol within about 2 hours to cause your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level to reach a .08 or above. If you plan on celebrating St. Patty’s day, or just sitting back with a few cold ones, here are 5 reasons why binge drinking is a bad idea:
4. People who engage in binge drinking are 14 times more likely to drive while impaired than other individuals. The average first time, non-felony DUI in the state of South Carolina costs approximately $10,000. You can also be charged with a felony DUI even if your BAC is not above the legal limit. It’s true! In South Carolina you can be charged with a felony DUI if you’re found at fault for a car accident that injures or kills another person when you have any amount of alcohol or other substances in your system. 3. There is a serious risk for loss of career and earning potential. MCO 5300.17 states that the Marine Corps has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and/or drug abuse. Do the math: 20+ years of income and healthcare. Are those drinks worth the potential loss? 2. You are at higher risk of committing a serious crime. According to the Department of Justice, 37% of the 2 million currently convicted offenders in prison report that they were using alcohol at the time of their arrest. Alcohol is also a contributing factor in 40% of all violent crimes committed. 1. You may win a free trip to the morgue. According to Prevention Research Institute, individuals with a BAC of .12 have a 20 times greater risk for being involved in a fatal car accident. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are 88,000 deaths annually that can be attributed to excessive alcohol consumption. A BAC of just .035 makes the risk 2.5 times greater. Do you still think you should participate in St. Patty’s Day festivities by binge drinking? Drinking, when done in moderation by individuals who are of age, can be ok. It is important to remember that we can also choose to avoid the risks that come with drinking by avoiding binge drinking. Enjoy your green beer, milk or whatever you choose, and enjoy it safely!
"The CDC reports that there are approximately 88,000 deaths annually that can be attributed to excessive alcohol consumption." JULY 2012 march 2014

LIBRARY READING LIST in a single year, as the background for a probing retelling of the story of the Good Samaritan. Three young Southerners - two Confederate soldiers and a woman starting a goodwill campaign - come to understand the cost of compassion and must decide, once and for all, who is my neighbor? The Martian: A Novel by Andy Weir One of the first men to walk on Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is nearly killed during a dust storm. Presumed dead, Watney’s crew is forced to evacuate. Now facing malfunctioning machinery and a brutal environment, Watney’s engineering skills and steadfast determination keep him alive as he overcomes obstacle after obstacle with little to no hope of rescue.
