March is National Nutrition Month National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign is designed to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The 2012 theme is “Get Your Plate in Shape.” This goes hand in hand with the new Food Plate that replaced the Food Pyramid. For more on this change and loads of useful health and fitness information, go to www.myplate.gov.
Additionally, choosing a variety of colorful foods is important because every color indicates the presence of different nutrients. Studies have isolated and identified many of these color-nutrient associations and can tell you exactly how they will benefit you. But rather than bog your mind down with all that, take the easy way out just choose minimally-processed, colorful foods (artificial colors don’t count) and know you are doing your body good! For information on local activities and training opportunities, contact Kathy Williams at 228-7616 or williamska@usmc-mccs.org.
need to cook them a bit longer. While your sweet potatoes cook, put out a pot or skillet over medium-high heat. Add a bit of olive oil to the hot pan then add your garlic and onions to start cooking down. Once the onions are translucent, add the ground turkey and use a large spoon to break it up to help cook it a bit quicker. When the turkey is half way done cooking, add the spices. Let the turkey cook until no longer pink or until completely cooked through, take off heat.

1 teaspoon ground red pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika salt and pepper, to taste Instructions Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Cut your sweet potatoes in half, lengthwise and put them face down on a cookie sheet. Put in the oven to cook for about 25-30 minutes depending how thick they are. You will know when they are done if they are easy to push on, on the skin side. If you pull them out early and the inside doesn’t come out easily with a spoon, you’ll

Now pull your sweet potatoes out of the oven and use a large spoon to scoop out the insides. Be careful to not go totally to the skin or it may tear and be pointless to add meat to. Put the insides of the sweet potatoes directly into your pan of turkey and mix thoroughly to combine. Now scoop out the new mixture and put into your sweet potato skins. You can go as high as you want. Think of it as a loaded bake potato. Now put those loaded sweet potatoes back on the cookie sheet, face up, back into the oven and cook for 3-5 more minutes just to meld the flavors together and harden the top a bit Now eat them. I mean it. Like seriously. Really good.

Pink Floyd is rarely discussed without using words like “psychedelic”, “conceptual” and “provocative”. Their shows are described as being theatrical with mind-blowing lights and unsurpassed sound. Their music cannot be referred to without making mention of their record breaking status. Without question Pink Floyd remains one of the most influential rock bands of all time. No easy feat to bring such a story to the stage. We would like to thank New River Auto Mall for their sponsorship of MCCS events and activities.

What My Family Should Know Although many of us are efficient in our daily lives and keep meticulous records in our professions, most of us leave inadequate and incomplete records of our economic and personal affairs when we die. When and how your benefits will be paid and how your estate will be settled are questions that must be answered. The guide: “What my Family Should Know” has been compiled to help you record the necessary facts for your family, your attorney and your executor. It is suggested you complete this record and store it in a safe place so it will be available for possible revisions by you and later use by your family. To obtain a copy of the guide, contact the Retired Activities Office at 228-4574 or by email: dennis.trimmer@usmc.mil.
Space-A Travel an Option for Retirees Retirees who dream of climbing an Egyptian pyramid, schussing down a black diamond ski slope in Bavaria, or walking on a Hawaiian beach can make these dreams come true with space-available travel through the Air Mobility Command. Typically, these dreams require a lot of money; however, Space-A travel is free with the exception of customs or federal inspection fees on some chartered
commercial air service missions. Air Mobility Command (AMC) aircraft fly all over the globe and often have open passenger seats available. An AMC aircraft takes off every 90 seconds. More than 130,000 Space-A travelers take advantage of this benefit each year. Retirees with a retiree ID card and eligible to receive retired or retainer pay, fly as Category VI passengers. Since missions can be rerouted, delayed or cancelled for a variety of reasons—weather, maintenance issues or higher priority missions—retirees need to be flexible. They need to plan for any potential delays and added expenses for stays, especially in high cost areas. There are four methods for signing up for Space-A travel, if seats are available. Although retirees cannot visit their grandchildren in Iraq or Afghanistan, they can travel to Germany if the aircraft transitions there. For further information on Space-A travel to include terminal information, schedules, flight restrictions and more, go to: www.amc. af.mil/amctravel. It’s an esteemed gathering of those who shoot the breeze with the greatest of ease, of the lying liars and the audiences who laugh with them! A child’s primary teeth, sometimes called “baby teeth,” are as important as the permanent adult teeth. Primary teeth typically begin to appear when a baby is between age six months and one year. Primary teeth help children chew and speak. They also hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums. The ADA recommends that a dentist examine a child within six months after the first tooth comes in and no later than the first birthday. A dental visit at an early age is a “well baby checkup” for the teeth. Besides checking for tooth decay and other problems, the dentist can show you how to clean the child’s teeth properly and how to evaluate any adverse habits such as thumbsucking.

Behavioral Health What is PTSD? Is it a true mental illness, the result of trauma or battlefield-related injuries, or is it something else entirely? That’s the question being posed to many experts recently as officials from the U.S Army are requesting the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to reevaluate what the condition is called. In December, PBS Newshour covered the emerging debate, which focuses on the exclusion of the word “disorder” from the diagnosis, potentially alleviating some of the stigma preventing some veterans from seeking treatment. APA president John Oldham, MD, told the Newshour in an interview that he was “open to the suggestion” of changing the name. The idea was first introduced by Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the Army’s vice chief of staff, in a letter to Oldham. Chiarelli told the Houston Chronicle in a 16 January story that the word disorder is “misused,” asserting instead that what soldiers experience is “an injury to the brain and how the brain works.” According to the Chronicle’s story, Oldham is evaluating possible updates to the association’s diagnostic manual with a new subcategory for PTSD, using “combat posttraumatic stress injury” as an example. He said the change would more clearly link the condition to “the impact and the injury of the combat situation and the deployment experience.”

This report raises an interesting point. The stigma associated with many mental health conditions does seem to prevent many from seeking help. (Sourced from article within the Behavioral Healthcare Publication) The above article taken from the Behavioral Healthcare Publication raises an important concern regarding our warriors who may be suffering from post war trauma. Regardless of the nomenclature, the reality is that if you know of someone who is suffering from sleep interruptions due to nightmares/night terrors, flashbacks or disruptive memories that intrude on one’s ability to feel safe and/ or secure in their surroundings, rage and/ or trouble managing stress due to residual anger related to a past trauma, substance abuse that wasn’t present prior to the traumatic event, please contact the following options for assessment/evaluation: Military One Source: 1.800.342.9647, Behavioral Health Branch:(843) 228-6126 MCAS - (843) 228-2044 MCRD. The importance of responding early is critical. When assisting someone to get the proper medical, psychological, and supportive measures, it is vital to impart to them that treatment works in interrupting this response to trauma. Dan Evans, BHB
