Family, Fitness and Fun

The “Family, Fitness and Fun Program “ culminates May 15 with an open participation 5K run/ walk starting at the commissary at 7 a.m.. The purpose of the “Family, Fun and Fitness Program” is to get people moving, motivated and eating healthy. The program started in January with the big finale during the May Case Lot Sale. Case Lot is May 14-16 with events on May 15. There will be prizes for the 5K provided by MCCS. For all who participated in the weight loss event that began in January, the final weigh-in is from 9-11 a.m.. The awards ceremony is at 12 p.m. provided by DeCA and MCCS. Activities for children such as bouncy houses, dunking booth and games are scheduled for 9 a.m.12 p.m. There will be many giveaways and prizes.

May 21 – Sept. 8

The objective of this program is to create a summer-long unit competition and to host events that share the mission of eliminating illegal drug use and promoting responsible use of alcohol within the military. This competition will be offered to all registered units aboard MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island. The unit earning the most points will be awarded a cash incentive deposited in the unit recreation fund. Points will be scored in a variety of ways: attendance/participation at specified events, such as the Annual Health & Wellness Fairs, least number of drug/alcohol related incidents during the dates of the program and other related activities. Points will be scored on a percentage basis to allow fairness to all sizes of commands. The competition begins May 21 with the MCAS Quarterly Road Race starting at 7 a.m.. Aquatic Fitness

Laurel Bay (228-7524)...............Tue-Sat from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. .........................................................Sun from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m .................................................................Closed on Mondays

Aquatic fitness is the best non-impact fitness activity, and almost anyone can participate. Water exercise can be beneficial whether you are modifying your fitness program, recovering from an injury, pregnant, overweight or elderly.

Parris Island (228-1506)...............Tue-Fri from 11 a.m. - 1900 ..........................................................Sat from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m .........................................................Sun from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m .................................................................Closed on Mondays

While in the water, your weight can be reduced up to 90 percent, reducing stress on weight bearing joints, bones and muscles. Aquatic exercise may be a good option to include in your physical fitness program if you are starting a new exercise program or suffer back and joint pain. Aquatic exercise rarely results in injury, yet offers exercise in all of the components of physical fitness: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.

Health & Fitness Parris Island Wins Interclub Match Golf Tournament Over Spring Island

PARRIS ISLAND, South Carolina -- The 2009-2010 Interclub Match, an annual golf tournament that pits Parris Island against Spring Island, concluded with Parris Island’s team emerging victorious for the first time since 2001. The final round of a two round series culminated at Old Tabby Links on Spring Island April 5. The first round was on Nov. 3, 2009 at The Legends on Parris Island. The Interclub Match started in 1998, and healthy rivalry has been alive ever since. “The tournament originated with the purpose of building relationships with the local community, and to develop a competitive rivalry with an outside golf club,” said Andy Hinson, The Legend’s head golf professional. The tournament features a Stableford scoring format and each team has 12 players (11 amateurs and one professional). The top nine scores (Stableford points) are counted for each team. Rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, as in stroke play, the Stableford system involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. Unlike traditional scoring methods, where the aim is to have the lowest score, under Stableford rules the objective is to have the highest score. The first round played at Parris Island left Spring Island down -35 points to Parris Island’s 7 points (Stableford points). During the second round, Spring Island recovered slightly on their home soil by earning a cumulative score of 0 to Parris Island’s -8, but it wasn’t enough as the total cumulative score was Parris Island -7, Spring Island -35. The Parris Island amateur team members were a combination of retired and active duty military, Department of Defense and Department of Justice employees.

The full Parris Island team included: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

“I really enjoyed playing in this tournament.” said Captain Young representing Parris Island. “While the competition kept it exciting, it was just about having a good time, and that’s what we did. I hope to play again next year.”

Healthy Recipes Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients • 1 (2 1/2-pound) beef tenderloin, trimmed • Cooking spray • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh parsley • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme • 1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Preparation

Beef Tenderloin with Mustard and Herbs

1. Prepare grill. 2. Lightly coat beef with cooking spray; sprinkle evenly with salt and pepper. Place beef on grill rack coated with cooking spray. Reduce heat to medium. Grill 30 minutes or until a thermometer registers 145° or until desired degree of doneness, turning to brown on all sides. Let beef stand 10 minutes. 3. Sprinkle parsley, thyme, and rosemary in an even layer on an 18 x 15–inch sheet of plastic wrap. Brush mustard evenly over beef. Place beef in herb mixture on plastic wrap; roll beef over herbs, pressing gently. Slice beef.

Grill the meat first, and then coat it in the mustard and herb mixture for bright, fresh flavors. Spread the chopped fresh herbs on a sheet of plastic wrap so you can evenly coat the beef with minimal mess. Serve the tenderloin with grilled polenta and a simple salad. STOP-LOSS PAY: The Army has started sending direct mailings to 50,000 people believed to have been stop-lossed and have not yet applied for the payments they are owed. It is estimated that over 100,000 eligible soldiers and surviving spouses may be eligible. So far, 10,000 claims have been sent to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service for payment. They must provide documented proof they were stop lossed with their claim. Family members of deceased service members should contact the appropriate military service for assistance in filing their claim. Information on how to contact each of the services is listed below: Army: Go to https://stoplosspay.army. mil or email RetroStopLossPay@CONUS. Army.Mil Navy: Email NXAG_N132C@navy.mil Marine Corps: Go to https://manpower. usmc.mil/stoploss or email stoploss@ usmc.mil Air Force: Go to http://afpc.randolph. af.mil/stoploss/

VA HOMELESS VETS: The Department of Veterans Affairs is allocating $39 million to fund about 2,200 new transitional housing beds through grants to local providers. “VA is committed to ending the cycle of homelessness among Veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “We will use every tool at our disposal - health care, education, jobs, safe housing - to ensure our Veterans are restored to lives with dignity, purpose and safety.” The $39 million in funding is broken into two categories. About $24 million in grants are available to renovate or rehabilitate space to create about 1,000 transitional housing beds. For more information, refer to VA’s Web page for the grant and per diem program at www. va.gov/homeless or contact VA’s program office, call 877-332-0334, or e-mail VA at homelessvets@va.gov . CONCURRENT RECEIPT: The Senate Armed Services Committee has given a sliver of hope to some disabled military retirees still waiting for the right to receive their full military retirement pay and veterans disability compensation. The committee is asking the Senate Budget Committee to make adjustments in the 2011 federal budget to accommodate $264 million in additional benefits in 2011 and $5.4 billion over the next 10 years to allow an expansion of “concurrent receipt.” The request comes in the committee’s letter to the Senate Budget Committee making recommendations about the $708 billion defense budget for 2011. BILL MAULDIN STAMP: The United States Postal Service deserves a standing ovation for something that happened in March: Bill Mauldin got his own postage stamp. It’s an honor that most generals and admirals never receive. Mauldin, and

his work, meant so much to the millions of Americans who fought in World War II, and to those who had waited for them to come home. He was a kid cartoonist for Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper; Mauldin’s drawings of his muddy, exhausted, whisker-stubbled infantrymen Willie and Joe were the voice of truth about what it was like on the front lines. Mauldin was an enlisted man just like the soldiers he drew for; his gripes were their gripes, his laughs were their laughs, his heartaches were their heartaches. He was one of them. They loved him. He never held back. Sometimes, when his cartoons cut too close for comfort, his superior officers tried to tone him down. In one memorable incident, he enraged Gen. George S. Patton, and Patton informed Mauldin he wanted the pointed cartoons -- celebrating the fighting men, lampooning the highranking officers -- to stop. Now! Mauldin’s drawings of his exhausted infantrymen Willie and Joe were the voice of truth. The news passed from soldier to soldier. How was Sgt. Bill Mauldin going to stand up to Gen. Patton? It seemed impossible. Not quite. Mauldin, it turned out, had an ardent fan: Five-star Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme commander of the Allied forces in Europe. Ike put out the word: Mauldin draws what Mauldin wants. Mauldin won. Patton lost. MILITARY HEALTH SYSTEM: The Military Health System (MHS) is a global medical network within the Department of Defense that provides health care to all U.S. military personnel worldwide. Equipped with 59 hospitals, 364 health clinics and a $50 billion budget, the MHS delivers the highest quality health care in the world to a beneficiary population of 9.6 million service members, veterans, and family members. MHS has launched a new Web site, http://health.mil, that provides a single point of entry to military health news, information and resources. The site is part of the Defense Department’s commitment to make health information available and easy to find. Content is categorized by topic or audience, including service members, retirees and families, health care providers, educators and researchers, Military Health System staff, Defense Department leaders and the media. PTSD Update: The Marijuana Policy Project in Washington D.C. says the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs should let VA doctors use marijuana in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. At present, VA forbids its doctors from recommending medical marijuana to veterans even in the 14 states where medical marijuana is legal. This policy is based on advice from the Drug Enforcement Administration. According to the MPP, a 2008 study by the RAND Corporation in showed that 20 percent of soldiers returning home from

Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD and that a 2007 study in the “Journal of Traumatic Stress” found marijuana can be an effective treatment for severe PTSD symptoms. The Marijuana Policy Project and MPP Foundation envision a nation where marijuana is legally regulated similarly to alcohol, marijuana education is honest and realistic, and treatment for problem marijuana users is non-coercive and geared toward reducing harm. Their mission is to: 1. Increase public support for nonpunitive, non-coercive marijuana policies. 2. Identify and activate supporters of non-punitive, non-coercive marijuana policies. 3. Change state laws to reduce or eliminate penalties for the medical and non-medical use of marijuana. 4. Gain influence in Congress. DFAS myPay SYSTEM: Retirees and annuitants with myPay accounts need to establish new user names and passwords if they have not already done so using the new format. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service implemented this new access strategy in an effort to increase the security of user information. The myPay online pay account management system allows many of the 6 million payroll customers of DFAS to access pay information and update such items as direct deposit account numbers, start or stop allotments, alter tax withholding amounts and retrieve tax forms. In the past, myPay account access relied on a user’s Social Security number and a DFAS-provided personal identification number. Later enhancements allowed the user to change their user name, known as a login ID, from their SSN to one of their own making. While the user names were masked (actual letters, numbers and symbols were not visible on the computer screen), more sophisticated “key logging” spyware could potentially provide this information to identity thieves should a user’s computer become compromised. This was also behind an earlier security upgrade that required the use of a virtual keyboard when entering a PIN. The virtual keyboard uses mouse clicks rather than keyboard entry to enter a PIN and access a user’s account.
