MAY IS NATIONAL HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AWARENESS MONTH Risks you can’t change: • Being a man over age 45 • Being a woman over age 55 and past menopause • Being African American • Having a parent, sister or brother with high blood pressure • Having health problems such as diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease Risks you can change: • Having high cholesterol • Smoking • Being overweight
When blood pressure is taken two numbers are written down: the top number is the pressure when the heart beats and the bottom number is the pressure when the heart rests between beats. For adults a normal blood pressure is under 120/80. High blood pressure is over 140/90.
• Staying inactive • Being a woman over age 35 who takes birth control pills and smokes High blood pressure is called the “silent killer”. There are no symptoms and many people have it and don’t know it. The best way to know is to get checked and to ask your doctor to check your blood pressure every year.
When your heart beats, it pumps blood through the arteries to all parts of the body. The force that moves the blood is called blood pressure. If the arteries are clogged, it’s harder for the blood to flow. When the heart has to work harder, the pressure goes up. Hypertension is when the blood pressure stays high.
Kathy Williams, Semper Fit Health Promotion Coordinator 228-7616 | williamska@usmc-mccs.org
Doctors aren’t sure why, but some people are more likely to develop high blood pressure and hypertension than others. There are several risks factors that affect your chances, some you can change and some you can’t.
MAY IS NATIONAL MELANOMA/SKIN CANCER DETECTION & AWARENESS MONTH Each year, over a million new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. While skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, it is also the most curable. Living in the Lowcountry, we need to pay attention to our skin. Once a month, take a few moments after your shower and examine your skin from head to toe – even your scalp. Look under your arms, at the soles of your feet and using a hand mirror, examine your back, buttocks and the back of your legs. Look for signs of melanoma in moles by checking for asymmetry (one half is unlike the other half ), border irregularity (the border is scalloped, vague or blurred), color variation (shades of tan, brown, black or sometimes white, red or blue from one area to another) or if the diameter is larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser (6mm). If you have any doubt about a mole, have your doctor take a look. For more information about skin cancer, visit www.cancer.org. JULY 2012 MAY 2013

CLEAN OUT YOUR MEDICINE CABINET Have you ever wondered what to do with expired or unused medication? Do I flush them down the toilet? Do I throw them out in the trash? These might seem like viable options but both of those methods could not only contaminate our environment, but may also lead to Identity Theft due to the information on the pill container. The Behavioral Health Drug Demand Reduction Prevention Program is pleased to announce the next date for the “Take Back Medication” event scheduled for 4 May, 0900 – 1500, as an alternative to improper medication disposal. They are partnering with the following organizations: Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Drug Investigation Section, Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Solid Waste and Recycling, Human Services Alliance, Beaufort/Jasper Water and Sewage Administration, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, local fire departments, Beaufort Memorial Hospital Life Fit Community Health, Home Instead Senior Care and the USMC Drug Demand Reduction Program. You may drop off your medications at Shanklin Public Works Site, 140 Shanklin Road, off Hwy 21 near the Marine Corps Air Station. If possible, keep medications in their container, black out names or other identifying information and tighten lids.
For further information on this event, or to inquire about other items not listed above, please contact Beaufort County Recycling at 255-2734 or www.bcgov.net/recycle
Also, we will be accepting cleaning products, batteries, paint, turpentine, stains and varnishes, anti-freeze, oil, gas, insecticides, poisons, hobby chemicals, photo chemicals, fire extinguishers, propane tanks and almost anything containing the words “warning”, “danger” or “caution”.
Gayle Wierzbicki, Drug Demand Reduction Coordinator 228-2465 | gayle.wierzbicki@usmc-mccs.org Promotion and support of this event is provided with grant funding from SC DHEC Office of Solid Waste and Recycling.
For more information, please call: Laurel Bay at 228-7640 or Parris Island at 228-1668. JULY 2012 MAY 2013

TUESDAY 7 MAY 2013 FROM 0930-1130 FOUR WINDS FAMILY READINESS CENTER MCRD PARRIS ISLAND, BUILDING 201
Want to earn your Marine a free day off? Some units provide their Marines with a free 72 when their spouse becomes L.I.N.K.S. trained. L.I.N.K.S. is a Marine Corps 101 for new Marine Corps/Navy Spouses and an amazing refresher for seasoned spouses. Come get great info, make new friends, and find out how to become that independent dependent. You will also get the Four Lenses training. Four Lenses will allow you to identify your personality type. You will also discover how you and your Marine can relate to one another in a more effective manner.
Although disagreements and anger are a normal part of life, violent expressions of feelings detract from and can negatively affect both personal and professional relationships. This workshop provides a basic overview on the dynamics of anger, how to identify volatile behavior in others, and offers a variety of acceptable coping strategies.
Please contact Veronica Stephens at veronica.n.stephens@usmc-mccs.org or 228-7362 to register. Childcare available with early registration.
To register, please contact the LifeSkills Program Trainer, Sara Hollenbeck at (843) 228-1570
or sara.h.hollenbeck@usmc-mccs.org. Childcare is available with advanced registration. Please contact the PI (228-3514), Laurel Bay (846-1160), or MCAS (228-7290) CDC to register. CDC vouchers will be provided at the end of the class to cover the cost of childcare.

LIBRARY Coolidge By Amity Shlaes (MCN Bio Coolidge) The author presents a fresh look at the years between 1923 and 1929 in this riveting biography of Calvin Coolidge, the President who served during the period leading up to the Great Depression. More than any other president, Coolidge understood that the country could manage better when the Federal Government is doing less. He was the first president to introduce the federal budget. During his time in office wages rode, tax rates fell and unemployment dropped. He became known as “Silent Cal and for a nation looking for a steady hand he was a welcome pilot in the Federal Government. Engineers of Victory: The Problem Solvers Who Turned the Tide in the Second World War By Paul Kennedy (MCN 940.54 Ken) The book is a nuts and bolts account of the strategic factors and grand strategies of ordinary soldiers, scientists, engineers and businessmen that led the Allies to victory. Kennedy recounts inside stories of inventions, social and military advancements rather than resort to a narrative about the war years. This is a must read for all WWII enthusiasts. Hit Maker: The Man and His Music By Tommy Mottola & Cal Fussman (MCN BIO Mottola) The autobiography of Tommy Mottola, one of the highest profile executives in the history of the music industry, provides an inside view of the powerful world of music, money and fame as he recounts the fascination of discovering and dealing with countless icons in the music industry. Long Shot By Mike Piazza with Lonnie Wheeler (MCN BIO Piazza) In a remarkably candid autobiography, Mike Piazza

allows the readers a glimpse inside the life a Major League player. He believes it takes more than luck to make a dream come true. Piazza quickly realizes that it takes not only talent but also determination and a formidable work ethic to become not only a catcher in the Major Leagues, but to become one of the great players in baseball history. Sports fans will love this book. Making Good Habits, Breaking Bad Habits: 14 New Behaviors that Will Energize Your Life By Joyce Meyer In this book, Meyer explains the importance of developing good habits while working to break bad habits that cause pain and prevent you from leading a successful life. In total, there are fourteen good habits that need to be cultivated to achieve true happiness, faith, excellence, responsibility, generosity, discipline, decisiveness and confidence. She urges readers to choose one habit at a time, celebrate every day successes and to deal with mistakes and disappointments. Best Kept Secret By Jeffrey Archer A new villain with a long memory appears just when Harry Clifton and Elizabeth Barrington have tied the knot and brought their families together. A once-high school bully named Fisher sets his vengeful sights on Giles' election campaign and the Barrington family. Happily ever after? Not so much. Part of the Clifton Chronicles series. The Hit By David Baldacci What to do when a government assassin turns rogue? Colleague Will Robie, who debuted this year in Baldacci's The Innocent, is tasked with doing him in

but begins to see that the man has a point. He changes his mind, however, when a loved one lands in the rogue's crosshairs. The Blossom Sisters By Fern Michaels Sometimes you have to lose everything to get what you want. Gus returns to an old farmhouse in the hopes that the sisters who raised him will take him back after his grandmother stops speaking to him. Plus, he's locked out of the house he put in Elaine's name, back when he thought she loved him. Gus has a long road to travel to make amends, but family means forgiveness and Gus won't quit until he's found it. 12th of Never By James Patterson There's no rest for new mothers, especially when Lindsay Boxer finds herself back on the job a week after giving birth. She's about to tackle the case of an up-and-coming San Francisco 49er accused of murder and investigates an English professor who's convinced his vivid murder nightmares are premonitions of things to come. Part of the Women's Murder Club series. Pirate Alley: A Novel By Stephen Coonts A rescue mission gone awry leaves little hope for the cruise ship passengers now held hostage by the deadly Somali pirates who just took their ship. The ransom isn't the only thing these terrorists want; now Jake Grafton must deal with the sinister pirate chief as the CIA and Navy SEALs try to keep a planned slaughter from throwing the American military and the Muslim world into war.

OUTSTANDING ACCREDITED SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS In December 2012, the Laurel Bay and Parris Island Youth Centers were accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA). COA conducted site visits during the beginning of December and informed us that the decision would be communicated to us the first week of February 2013. Much to our excitement, we opened our email on December 24 to discover that due to “the excellence of the Programs” the Accreditation was expedited and the Programs were granted full Accreditation without further review! We received this accreditation based on our School-Age Programs, or Youth Centers, on base. We offer a vibrant, interactive and fun venue for children. Our programs are designed to provide comprehensive development with an “out-of-school” experience. On school days, the programs are open both before and after school. When schools are closed, we offer full day care services. In the summer, our camp runs during weekdays for the full day! Weekly Activity Plans incorporate physical

activities such as games, art, music, technology and media such as touch-screen computers, Wii and X Box games, movies and educational support such as homework assistance, clubs and much more. Each plan is geared developmentally by age group. In the School-Age Program, we asked the children what they like best about their experience. Here are some of their responses: “Three Little Bears Puppet Shows, we do the shows all by ourselves.” - Baylee, age 5 “Making Gingerbread Houses.” - Lacey, age 5 “In Art, coloring A Starry Night to make it beautiful – like the real art.” - Layla, age 5 “Playing Batman!” - Elliott, age 5 In addition to our School-Age Programs, we offer a separate Teen Program at each site. Under staff supervision, the teens plan and execute their choice activities and outings according to their interests.
