MCCS HAPPENINGS

May is National Melanoma/ Skin Cancer Detection & Awareness Month Living in the Lowcountry, we need to pay attention to our skin. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Each year, over a million new cases are diagnosed in the U.S.. Yet skin cancer is also the most curable cancer. Once a month, take a few moments after your shower and examine your skin from head to toe – even your scalp. Look under your arms, at the soles of your feet, and (using a hand mirror) examine your back, buttocks and the back of your legs. Look for signs of melanoma in moles: ASYMMETRY – one half is unlike the other half; BORDER IRREGULARITY – the border is scalloped, vague or blurred; COLOR VARIES – from one area to another - shades of tan and brown, black, sometimes white, red or blue; DIAMETER IS LARGER than the diameter of a pencil eraser (6mm). If you have any doubt about a mole, have your doctor take a look. www.cancer.org

May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Health Information Center, this year’s theme highlights the threat of uncontrolled hypertension; “If Your Blood Pressure Is Not Lower Than 140/90, Ask Your Doctor Why”. The NHLBI reports that high blood pressure affects approximately one in four American adults. Of those with hypertension, about 68% are aware of their condition, but only 27% have it under control. The reasons for this include not taking drugs as prescribed and/or not taking a medication that sufficiently lowers blood pressure. Lifestyle changes are extremely important to help prevent high blood pressure, and also to help control it. The National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP) coordinated by the NHLBI is designed to help spread education and awareness of the dangers of hypertension and to help inform the public about what they can do to avoid developing this condition, and also what dietary and lifestyle changes they can make to help treat the condition if they already have it. The lifestyle changes to control high blood pressure are: lose weight (if overweight), be-

MAY 2012

come physically active, choose foods lower in salt and sodium, limit alcohol intake and take care of unresolved stress. The NHLBI offer a wide variety of materials to help Americans learn more about hypertension and what they can do about it, including “Facts About the DASH Diet”. DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is an eating plan rich in fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods and lower in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. It has been shown to reduce high blood pressure and the fact sheet gives an overview of the plan along with a week of DASH menus. The NHLBI and the NHBPEP have also set up a special educational website, which can be accessed through the NHLBI home page at http://www.nhlbi.nih. gov. For activities to get more active, take a look at http://mccs-sc.com under THINGS TO DO.

RETAIL National Resource Directory The National Resource Directory (NRD) is a United States government inter-agency web portal for wounded warriors, service members, retirees, veterans, their families and caregivers. It provides information and links to thousands of national, state and local resources. The NRD was established to support the reintegration, recovery and rehabilitation of our members of the United States Armed Forces. According to Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy, Kathleen Martinez, “the National Resource Directory is part of our commitment to ensuring they have access to the resources they need to recover and successfully return to work and civilian life.” Visitors to the web portal can find information about Veterans’ benefits, including disability and pension benefits, VA health care and educational opportunities, homeless assistance and employment resources. The site also provides information for those who care for Veterans, such as access to emotional, financial and community assistance. The links include federal, state and local government agencies, Veterans service organizations, non-profit and community-based organizations, and academic institutions and professional associations. The National Resource Directory is a collaborative effort between the U. S. Department of Defense, U. S. Department of Labor, and the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It can be located at www.nationalresourcedirectory.gov.

Power of Attorney: What is it and who should have one? As we become older, many retirees and annuitants choose to have a loved one handle their accounts. The two ways to do this are to appoint a Power of Attorney (POA), or in severe cases, have a court appoint a guardian or trustee. A POA can be useful for retirees and annuitants who are having trouble managing their accounts. However, it’s important to know what a POA can and can’t do. Many states let a POA handle another person’s finances regardless of that person’s competency. These state laws often conflict with federal laws. Retired and annuitant pay falls under federal law, which takes priority over state law. A POA can’t make DFAS pay related changes for a retiree or annuitant. They can help with non-pay related issues. These include:

• Mailing address changes • Requesting account statements • Requesting 1099R forms • Completing reports of existence • Completing and signing annuity applications • Requesting copies of documents • Requesting information protected by the Privacy Act of 1974 DFAS cannot legally help a POA with any of the above requests without a copy of the POA document. To make sure your POA doesn’t run into any roadblocks, you should provide DFAS a copy as soon as possible. If you need a loved one to make all of the above changes as well as pay-related changes to your account, you will need to have a court-appointed guardian or trustee established. The courts will appoint a guardian or trustee if you are deemed incompetent and unable to manage your own finances. Before DFAS can legally make changes requested by

a guardian or trustee, they need a certified copy of your court order. It must include: • The Seal of the Court • The name of the appointed trustee If you are an annuitant receiving Survivor Benefit Plan payments, and you don’t want to go through the courts, you can complete a Representative Payee Application www. dfas.mil/retiredmilitary/forms.html. In addition to the application, you must include a signed physician statement. As with a POA, you or your guardian should send DFAS a copy of the court order or your representative payee application as soon as possible. This will ensure they are able to help your guardian or trustee without any delay. LIBRARY New Titles CAN’T IS NOT AN OPTION: MY AMERICAN STORY by Nikki Haley. Haley, the governor of South Carolina, recounts her journey from being the child of Indian immigrants to the new face of the Republican Party. Growing up in a rural southern town that had only known black and white residents, Haley talks about the racism and other obstacles she faced, her experiences in the business world, her decision to run for elected office, and more. ANGELS OF VENGEANCE by John Birmingham. In Birmingham’s conclusion to the trilogy that began with ‘Without Warning’ and ‘After America’ President Kipper, the daughter of a con artist, a Mexican farmer, and a former black-ops agent join together to rebuild America in the face of predation by pirates and freebooters. In addition, Kipper’s leadership and authority is challenged by a rogue governor who has proclaimed himself sovereign power in Texas. GUILTY WIVES by James Patterson and David Ellis. Abbie Elliot, whose husband is a diplomat in Zurich, is looking forward to a weekend getaway in Monte Carlo with her three best friends. It brings fine dining, high-stakes gambling, and gorgeous men. But, the fun comes to a screeching halt when they’re charged with murder and imprisoned. As their trial begins, with their lives laid bare, it’s clear they’re being framed, but by whom? BETRAYAL by Danielle Steel. Film director Tallie Jones is happy with both her personal and professional life. But, it all came tumbling down around her when she discovered that her boyfriend had been unfaithful and someone had been stealing from her for years. To find out who the culprit was, she joined forces with a dashing FBI agent who takes a very personal interest in her case.

THE LIFEBOAT by Charlotte Rogan. An explosion on an ocean liner gliding across the Atlantic has dire consequences for 22-year-old newlywed Grace Winter. Suddenly, she’s a widow, and because the lifeboats had been filled to overflowing, with people fighting (sometimes unsuccessfully) to climb aboard and stay there, she’s also on trial for murder. Inspired by a childhood spent sailing and a case involving shipwreck she found in one of her husband’s criminal law texts, first novelist Rogan crafts a chilling story that smartly asks, What would you do?

On 23 June children of all ages are invited to decorate cookies that will be taken home. Both events begin at 1400 and will be held at the Air Station Library. A third program will be held at the Air Station Library on 30 June at 1400. This program is designed for adults. Kathy Williams, our Health Promotion Coordinator, will provide information on nutrition and answer questions from the audience. “A Visit with a Nutritionist” will provide each attendee with loads of valuable information and a fun filled relaxing afternoon.

COME HOME by Lisa Scottoline. Jill has a moral dilemma. After a devastating divorce, she has a good job, is newly engaged, and her daughter is happy and doing well in school. But, now Jill’s distraught ex step-daughter Abby has appeared on her doorstep with the news that she believes her father was murdered. Dare Jill endanger her future to resolve the death of a man from her past?

The program is open to children (4-12) young adults (13-19) and adults. Prizes will be awarded. Please visit your library to obtain additional information.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR…FORGIVE by Joyce Meyer. The most destructive of emotions is anger. It’s responsible for broken relationships, sleepless nights, high blood pressure, and ulcers. It destroys friendships, marriages, families, and peace of mind. But, Meyer insists that properly handled, anger is an alert system that something’s wrong and needs resolved. She delves into the important process of forgiving, which will bring true peace in one’s life.

2012 Summer Reading Program READING IS SO DELICIOUS 11 June-13 July

Library Cards on the Air Station and Parris Island Library cards are issued on a daily basis at each library. “We Make Marines” can be found on the front of the Parris Island library card. The Parris Island library is located on the second deck of the Douglas Visitors Center. A picture of the planes located in front of the Air Station are on the Air Station library card. The Air Station library is located on Elrod Avenue. Patrons may elect to use both libraries and register for a card at each location. The libraries are now completely PII compliant. The patrons name and partial social security number are no longer used as the ID. The sponsor (military member) will receive the first card and become the “notice master”. Each family member over the age of 10 receives their own card which is linked to the sponsors account. If an overdue notice is issued the sponsor will know immediately who has an item checked out of the library.

Story time Held on Wednesday Mornings Parris Island Library | 0900

THE UNSEEN by Heather Graham. San Antonio had become a dumping ground for a serial killer and Texas Ranger Logan Raintree was not about to sit idly by and let it continue. When he’s approached by a group of paranormal investigators who insist the recent killings may be connected to an event in the 1800s, he decides to work with them, hoping they can track down the killer and end his killing spree.

Story time is held each Wednesday morning at the Parris Island Library at 0900. The program is designed to teach preschool children about storytelling and library etiquette. All children are welcome to attend.

THE LOST YEARS by Mary Higgins Clark. Biblical scholar Richard Callahan is astonished when Mariah Lyons shows him a letter left to her by her late father, a professor of history. The letter contains a translation from a 2,000-year-old papyrus scroll and is accompanied by a dusty clay jar and a fragment of papyrus torn from a scroll which her father claimed was a letter in Christ’s own handwriting.

Whenever alcohol is introduced into the equation, impairment problems and/or life style health related problems can be a concern. Our message is to always stay mindful of reducing the risk factors associated with the use of alcohol. Everyone has a responsibility to themselves and to others with maintaining an increased awareness and a respect for the dangers that alcohol can impose if used in an irresponsible manner. Prime for Life reminds us that the bulk of risk factors associated with alcohol are in our control. These risk factors, of course, are the choices we make with our use of alcohol. If we make high risk choices (drinking 5 or more drinks in a sitting for example-binge drinking) we increase our risk of impairment problems, and thus, put others at risk as well. Be mindful of the affects alcohol will have on your body/brain. The body can only metabolize an ounce of alcohol an hour (differences in this formula depend on gender, body weight, stomach contents, etc...). Use of alcohol with cold medicines or pain medication can also cause serious impairment problems and/or lifestyle health related problems. Let us work together to keep our summer safe and fun.
