What’s Happening at The Legends at Parris Island Hole in One at The Legends Congratulations to Roberta Slaughter on her hole-in-one at The Legends at Parris Island. Roberta is a retired CW04 with 22 years of Marine Corps service, and she currently works as a section supervisor at IPAC aboard MCRD Parris Island. Her hole-in-one was on #6 par 3. She used a 7 iron, and she was on a golf outing with her husband Michael. Roberta has played golf for over 20 years. Her goal was to play well enough to play the All Marine and Armed Services matches. She achieved that goal when she played in 1996 and 1998. When asked about her thoughts on the course at The Legends at Parris Island she remarked, “The golf course has come a long way from its previous layout to being a rival with any local course. We are fortunate to have such a great military course to play.”
Three ways for successful completion:

November is Diabetes Awareness Month If you have elevated blood glucose levels known as “pre-diabetes,” losing as little as 10–15 pounds (if you’re overweight) and getting regular exercise can make a huge difference in preventing or delaying full blown type 2 diabetes. Talk to your doctor about diabetes screening that would be appropriate for you. Screening is recommended for all adults at age 45, but earlier screening is recommended for overweight adults who have a family history of diabetes or have other risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. For information on healthy habits call Semper Fit Health Promotion 228-7616 or Semper Fit Fitness 228-7010.
The Great American Smokeout The Great American Smokeout will be observed on Thursday 17 November. Using free phone services like 1-800-QUITNOW or online sites like www.lungusa.org can double one’s chance to successfully quit smoking. Healthy Recipes Finding convenience foods that taste good and are genuinely nutritious is a real challenge. Many “health bars” are made with corn syrup and some even contain trans fat. Others are chalky or have too much sugar. There just aren’t many options available that are minimally processed, rich in nutrients, and taste good. Try the below homemade bar for on the go or as a great snack after a workout.

MCCS MCCS HAPPENINGS HAPPENINGS
LIBRARY New Titles at the Library “Forbidden” by Ted Dekker & Tosca Lee. Set in a terrifying future, this tells the story of a world where all threats have been silenced. There is no anger, no hatred, no war--only perfect peace. But it’s also a time where every single soul walking the earth has been genetically stripped of humanity. “Son of Stone” by Stuart Woods. Stone Barrington has returned to New York from Bel-Air and a much anticipated reunion with his former love, Arrington Calder. Now he’s looking to stay closer to home and cash in on his partnership at Woodman & Weld. But Arrington has other plans and a surprise she didn’t share during his visit. Stone’s about to meet the child he never knew he had. “Lethal” by Sandra Brown. When her fouryear-old daughter informs her that there’s a sick man in their yard, Honor Gillette rushes out to help him, only to come face-to- face with Lee Coburn, the man accused of murdering seven people the night before. Armed, he forces her to take him into her house. Thus began a nightmare involving her late husband and something of value he supposedly possessed. “Shock Wave by John Sandford.” Two different factions fight to prevent the building of a superstore in their Minnesota river town: the environmentalists who predict ecological disaster, and the local merchants who fear the impact it will have on their businesses. When the protestors have little effect on the plans, someone decides to take matters into their own hands setting off two bombs. Now Virgil Flowers must find the person responsible. “The Affair” by Lee Child. Through the years Jack Reacher has lived many an adventure on the pages of Child’s books, but never has his back-story been told--until now. The answer to what made Reacher start walking and become a revered vigilante hero is finally revealed. “Aleph” by Paulo Coelho. Coelho, on a voyage of self-discovery, takes readers on a trip on the Trans-Siberian Express and some of the world’s most remote locations. Using his own experiences as fodder for his fictional character’s crisis of faith, he searches for spiritual renewal and growth. Through Coelho’s eyes, readers see that love takes many forms; that it hurts, transforms, exalts, and defines us as human beings. “The End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler’s Germany, 1944-1945” by Ian Kershaw. While much has been written about

how and why the Germans lost WWII, little attention has been paid to how and why they were able to hold out as long as they did. Drawing on research and personal testimony from ordinary Germans and arch-Nazis alike, historian Ian Kershaw explores this topic.
pictures can be picked up in late November so that they can be hung on the Christmas tree at home. This is especially important if your hero is deployed.
“Life Itself: A Memoir by Roger Ebert.” Since 1967 Ebert has been reviewing films for the “Chicago Sun-Times” and was the first film critic to ever win a Pulitzer Prize. This allowed him to rub elbows with some famous and notso-famous people. Now he shares the story of his amazing life and career which included a battle with alcoholism and, most recently, his health issues that have left him mute.
Transparent Languages was introduced on 3 October by Headquarters Marine Corps. This a powerful new online language learning system that provides access to over 90 languages and 21 ESL courses with a focus in English. “Feast Day of Fools” by James Lee Burke. (Audio only) Town drunk Danny Boy Lorca was in the wrong place at the wrong time when he witnessed a man being tortured to death by a group of bandits. Fearing for his own life, he fled into town demanding that Sheriff Hackberry Holland put him in the drunk tank. When the sheriff gets Danny to admit what’s going on, he knows a serial killer has returned.

“The Immortality Factor” by Ben Bova. (Audio only) Is stem-cell research mankind’s greatest scientific breakthrough, or is it an attempt to play God? There are believers on both sides of the issue, including two brothers, doctors Arthur and Jessie Marshak. Between them stands a woman both brothers will do anything to save. But can they bridge the gap that divides them? The life or death of millions hinges on the answer to that question.
Hero Tree in Each Library Each Marine or soldier who wears a uniform is a hero. Each autumn a hero tree is placed in the libraries to thank and to remember the heroes among us. This is the third year that the libraries have honored such heroes. Currently there are pictures of heroes that are both current and retired service personnel from as far back as World War II. The hero tree was founded in 2005 as a national incentive that honors the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military and their families. The hero tree is decorated in white lights and yellow ribbons. The colorful picture ornaments provide the only other colors on the tree. The white lights serve to remember those who were unable to be welcomed home. The yellow ribbons symbolize our wish that each hero serving their country return home safely. The tree will be up until Thanksgiving. Pictures are always welcome. You may either supply the ornament or we will make one on site. The

Talking During Dinner Makes a Difference
•
Good food, great conversation and loads of laughs – that’s what family dinners are made of, according to Christie Jeter, prevention specialist with Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse department. Whether you’re cooking a gourmet meal or ordering from your favorite take-out place, rest assured that what your kids really want at the dinner table is you.
•
CASA, the national Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, has been surveying thousands of US teenagers and their parents over the last 16 years. The aim has been to identify factors that raise the risk of teen substance abuse. CASA researchers have found that if a child can get through his/her first 21 years of life without smoking, abusing alcohol or using illegal drugs, their changes of virtually never doing so are extremely high. CASA also learned that the greatest influence on whether a child will choose to use these substances and how they use them is their parents. Why are frequent family dinners so important? CASA research has consistently found that kids who have frequent family dinners: • • •
Are at a lower risk for substance abuse compared to teens who dine with their families infrequently. Are less likely to have friends who use illicit drugs or abuse prescription drugs. Are likelier to get better grades in school.
It’s never too early to start the tradition of regular family dinners with your children. Make dinnertime special by turning off the TV and not answering the phone during mealtime. Be a family STAR – take the pledge to:
