NOVEMBER 2014
"On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress Since that date many thousand men have borne the name Marine. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history."

Rock Climbing and Its Benefits by Harriet Fisher The Indoor Rock Climbing Wall at the MCAS Beaufort Fitness Center provides an opportunity for adults and children to experience the sport of rock climbing. The 35 foot high wall offers 6 options for different climbing levels. One of the options is the self-belay system. It allows climbers to focus on climbing without the need for a partner and is based on climber weight. The self-belay system is acceptable for children 5 and older that weigh a minimum of 45 lbs. Rock climbing offers excellent fitness benefits such as building muscle and endurance, reducing stress and promoting flexibility. Abigail Wise’s article, “How Rock Climbing Does Your Mind - And Body - Good”, published on 20 August 2014 on HuffPost Healthy Living claimed there are many benefits to the sport: "Although not often thought of as a common form of cardio, ascending walls is a sure way to get your heart pumping, similar to the way climbing stairs or jogging does. A one-hour climb session can burn well over 700 calories. Plus, tricky maneuvers and lengthy reaches often require developing flexibility that wasn't there before." The Rock Climbing Wall is accessible whenever the MCAS Beaufort Fitness Center is open. Before climbing, please check in with a Fitness Center staff member for assistance. Climbers need to wear appropriate attire such as sneakers or climbing shoes, loose fitting clothing or comfortable clothing that allows movement of the limbs. We provide the harness and instructions…and encouragement! For more information please call 228-7092.

LIBRARY The Hero Tree Six years ago, a group of librarians from Illinois created the Hero Tree to honor the military members fighting in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The idea has spread and the Hero Tree is now found in numerous libraries across the nation decorated completely in white and yellow. The white lights remember those who were unable to come home to their families. The yellow ribbons symbolize our wish that all military personnel remain safe both during combat and on their journey home. The MCRD Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort libraries will be participating again this year. Please help us by providing either library with a photo of your special hero during November. A copy will be made of the photograph to be placed on the trees. Any Service Member that is active duty, a veteran, retired or deceased is eligible to have their picture added to the trees. Thank you in advance for your participation - we look forward to trees full of heroes again this year.
Santa’s Mailbox Each year the libraries act as a collection station for letters going to the North Pole. Santa’s elves will deliver these special mailboxes on 24 November and pick them up on 15 December so that there is plenty of time to make sure children’s letters make it to Santa before the Holidays. When dropping off your letters, please remember to add you return address. Santa and his elves just might send a response!
