HEALTH & FITNESS

Imagine a Marine Corps free of Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects many families in our military community. Men and women can be both victims and offenders. Domestic violence reaches across social, economic, cultural, ethnic and religious lines. It comes in many forms (e.g. emotional, physical or sexual) and involves one person having power and control over another. South Carolina has the second highest domestic violence rate in the nation. It’s a problem and it’s happening right here in the Tri-Command.

Children are victims of domestic violence as well. Many children who witness domestic violence show signs of anxiety, depression and anger and they may blame themselves for the abuse and act out aggressively. That is why reporting is so important. Even if you just suspect domestic violence you should report it and stand up for those who cannot always help themselves. It is important to understand domestic violence, how to prevent and recognize it, and the resources available to help when domestic violence arises. Look for information tables and displays set up throughout the bases as well as events during the month to raise awareness. As part of the recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a class called Hot Monogamy will be offered to help couples reconnect and remember all the fun of their marriage! The class will be held on 10 October, 1600-1730 in Bldg. 807 aboard MCAS Beaufort and again on 22 October, 1800-1930 in the MCCS Learn-

ing Center (behind the old Backyard Burgers) aboard MCRD Parris Island. You can register for the class by contacting Ginny Wescott at virginia.c.wescott@usmc-mccs.org or 2284110. Childcare is available for both classes by calling the MCRD Parris Island CDC at 228-3514 or MCAS Beaufort CDC at 228-7290.

4

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence and is in need of help, please call the Victim Advocate 24/7 Line at 843-592-0646 or the Safe Helpline at 877-995-5247. Ginny Wescott, FAP Prevention & Education Specialist 228-7290, virginia.c.wescott@usmc-mccs.org

Thank You to our event sponsor:

October is National Breast cancer Awareness Month The Department of Defense (DoD) and the Marine Corps neither endorse nor favor any commercial supplier, product, or service.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer. In 2004 alone, 186,772 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. You can lower your risk of breast cancer and increase your chances of early detection by: • Taking care of your body. Maintain a healthy weight through exercise and diet rich in healthy foods and drinks. Also, limit your alcohol intake and abstain from using tobacco products. • Discussing your family history of breast cancer with your health care provider. Talk to your health care provider about your family history of breast cancer and other cancers. Ask him or her about your risk and what preventative measures you can take to lower your chance of developing breast cancer. • Finding out the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy. Some women use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat the symptoms of menopause. Talk to your health care provider about the risks and benefits of HRT and how they could affect your chances of developing breast cancer. • Conducting regular self-examinations and screenings for breast cancer. It’s never too early to start doing self-examinations. They are a great way to find changes in your body that could be a sign of breast cancer or other illnesses. Talk to your health care provider about how to conduct self-examinations if you are unsure how to do one. Also talk to him or her about what age would be appropriate for you to start having annual mammograms. By getting the necessary exams, you can increase your chances of early detection and of having a long, healthy life! LIBRARY READING LIST The Last Witness by W.E.B. Griffin and William Butterworth IV In this 11th book in the Badge of Honor series, Philadelphia homicide detective Matt Payne and Texas Ranger, Jim Byrth, investigates a Mexican drug cartel-Russian mob operation that smuggles Russian girls into the United States to work in the sex trade. The White Princess by Philippa Gregory The 5th book of her Cousins War series focuses on Princess Elizabeth of York, whose marriage to Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty, would bring about the end of the War of the Roses. The new queen struggles in her marriage to the man who murdered the one she loved. Learning to love Henry takes time and just when she's starting to see the man behind the killer, Elizabeth must choose whether to be her husband's informant. Two Fronts by Harry Turtledove In this 5th installment of an alternate-history version of World War II, Britain and France allied themselves with Nazi Germany to battle the communist Soviet Union. The U.S. goes to war with Japan while avoiding the European theater. In Spain, fascist Nationalists are backed by Germany and wage trench warfare against mingled Communists and Republicans who are allied with free Czechs and independently operating Americans and British.

out. As Daniel receives more dark messages, he finds himself trying to stop a killer who soon targets Daniel. Compound Fractures by Stephen White Psychologist Dr. Alan Gregory is back for one last outing in the 12th and final book in the Alan Gregory mystery, and this time he's the one on the couch. Reeling from a shooting that has left his wife in a coma, he has to solve the mystery of the motive behind the shooting and clear his own name from the list of suspects in the attempted murder of his wife.

Tell No Lies by Gregg Hurwitz Daniel Brasher, a San Francisco counselor, finds an envelope addressed to someone else in his office mail - one intended for someone he doesn’t know that was placed in his slot by accident. The envelope that contains what appears to be a death threat, and even more disturbing, the threat appears to have already been carried

the hero tree Six years ago a group of librarians from Illinois created the Hero Tree to honor the military members fighting in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The idea has spread and the Hero Tree is now found in numerous libraries across the nation decorated completely in white and yellow. The white lights remember those who were unable to come home to their families. The yellow ribbons symbolize our wish that all military personnel remain safe both during combat and on their journey home. Each year the participation on MCRD Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort has increased. Color is added to the trees through pictures of Marines and other military personnel who are serving, have served or are retired. All military personnel are invited to add their pictures to the trees. The CDC’s on each base are planning an October project that will completely fill the tree this year. Several classes are planning on creating individual art work around the pictures and will bring the pictures to one of the libraries to add to the trees. Please help us by providing your child with a photo of their special hero, which may include the child and their family member, when the request comes home from the CDC. Pictures will go home before Thanksgiving. We encourage parents to hang each picture on the family Christmas tree also as this may be helpful for children who has a family member deployed during the holidays.
