Red Ribbon Week
For further information drug and substance abuse and/or unit briefs, please contact: Gayle Wierzbicki • 228-2465 Drug Demand Reduction Program
Red Ribbon Week is held during the last week of October each year to promote drug awareness and prevent illegal drug use. It’s also a time to emphasize resources for substance-abuse related issues. This year, Red Ribbon Week will be observed from 23-31 October.
Rebecca Landon • 228-2489 Alcohol Briefs and Prime for Life 4.5
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 to honor Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent and former Marine, who was kidnapped and killed by drug traffickers in Mexico. Members of Camarena’s community began wearing red ribbons as a tribute to him and to raise awareness of the affects illegal drug use has on more than just the user. Since 1990, the DoD has joined other organizations in a national observance of Red Ribbon Week to prevent illegal drug use among service members and their families.

Service members face hazardous conditions unique to the military. The conditions can be made even more dangerous since, besides serious physical health problem including death, drug use can weaken or damage various forms of cognitive functions such as attention, memory, judgment and problem solving. According to the DoD’s Office of the Under Secretary for Personnel and Readiness, when one’s ability to perform is hindered due to drug use, they lack combat effectiveness which negatively impacts the safety and wellbeing of others as well as compromises the safe handling of sensitive information concerning national security. In a 2011 interview with the American Forces Press Services, the DoD’s Operational Readiness and Safety director, Joseph Angello, said that drug use among service members is a readiness issue: “We cannot have people in the business of arms with drug impairments…We have to be full up and ready.” However, drug use doesn’t just refer to illegal drug use. It includes abused prescription drugs and synthetic drugs, such as Spice, Molly, bath Salts and any other illegally used substances that cause both mental and physical impairment. To support the Marine Corps’ readiness mission and anti-drug policy, the Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDRP) was established. Through education, outreach and awareness programs the DDRP helps deter Marines from drug use. The DDRP aboard MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island will be observing Red Ribbon Week with activities at Laurel Bay and Whale Branch Schools as well as a golf tournament on 17 October. For more details see page 10. Help is available through our Substance Abuse Counseling Center at Bldg. 17 aboard MCRD Parris Island, and by calling 228-1620/2044.

LIBRARY READING LIST Perfidia by James Ellroy
Bittersweet by Colleen McCullough
Perfidia opens the day before Pearl Harbor with the murder of a Japanese family. A note left at the scene written in Japanese claiming responsibility for a "looming apocalypse," suggests foreknowledge of the attack. The crime becomes a political storm as its investigation conducted by 4 members of the L.A. Police Department try to piece together the clues while the Japanese internment begins.
The Latimer sisters are two sets of twins coming of age in postWWI Australia, where opportunities for women are greater than ever before. All four enroll in a nurse's training program and while being immersed in hospital life, they meet men from all walks life. Each sister must make substantial decisions about what she values most. The Choir Director 2: Runaway Bride by Carl Weber
13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff and the Annex Security Team
Choir director Aaron Mackie’s success has drawn national attention and now he’s on the verge of signing a record deal. He decides that now is the right time to propose to Tia Gregory, the church secretary. When Aaron is left at the alter without explanation, he asks his friend and mentor, Bishop T.K. Wilson, to help investigate Tia’s disappearance. The investigation challenges the men in ways they never imagined and T.K. is asked to cross a line that forces him to choose between faith and family.
13 Hours covers the events of 11 September 2012, when terrorists attacked the U.S. State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. They went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal, never-before-told story of what happened during the 13 hours of the infamous attack.

In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides
Dr. Emory Charbonneau is kidnapped along a mountain road after an argument with her husband, Jeff. Emory’s anonymous captor has a past so dark that he won’t even reveal his name. Unexpectedly, captor and captive square off against a dangerous group of people following their own moral compass. The more time she spends with her mysterious captor, the more Emory wonders if he might be far more friend than foe.
In 1879, the USS Jeanette sets sail with US Navy Captain, George Washington De Long, and a team of 32 men to explore the mysterious North Pole. What should’ve been an epic excursion turns into an Arctic nightmare when the ship sinks and leaves them marooned 1,000 miles north of Siberia with limited supplies. The adventurers now must survive polar bears, sub-zero mazes and snow blindness.
Unmanned by Dan Fesperman Darwin Cole was a career pilot in the U.S. Air Force. First he flew F-16sn then he flew, via remote control, Predator drones. A washout drunk with a dishonorable discharge, he’s now living in a dilapidated trailer in the Nevada wilderness, still trying to recover from his last mission – flying a drone in which he witnessed children being killed by the missile he fired. When journalists approach him for help with a story about the intelligence officer in charge of that mission, he sees an opportunity to pull his life back together and to get some justice for the children whose lives, he believes, were taken by a murderer hiding in the shadows of the American government.

With the help of an old map, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma discover ancient answers to the horrific disease that lead to the deaths at the station. The virus is just getting started. Can Sigma stop it?
