september health observances
Tee It Up for the Troops
National Cholesterol Month and Eat More Fruits & Veggies Month are observed in September. No big surprise that they go hand in hand! Very often the question is asked, “Which is better, fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables?” The answer is both are equally nutritious!
How to Select: Choose bags where the fruit/vegetable is still in individual pieces. If they have become a solid block, this may indicate some thawing and refreezing.
How to Store: Store frozen fruits/vegetables in your freezer until date on package or up until 8-12 months at 0°F for best quality. Food is still safe to eat with longer storage but may be of lesser quality.
Nutrition Benefits:
7 September Sea Pines Golf Course
Marines and Sailors nominated by their Command from MCAS Beaufort and the MCRD Parris Island will join Sea Pines Country Club Members in a round of golf followed by a cookout. Military golfers will play free and receive door prizes. 95% of the proceeds will be sent to the national organization, Tee It Up for the Troops. Tee it Up For The Troops is a nonprofit organization created to help support and ease the burdens of the fallen and disabled members of our Armed Forces and their families. For more information contact Sylvia Sanchez at 228-1667 or sanchezsy@usmc-mccs.org.
Check the label on the package. Frozen fruits/vegetables are harvested at their peak and frozen within hours, so they are very close to “just-picked” nutritionally. They are economical, clean and ready to use!

MCCS Happenings HAPPENINGS MCCS
Remarriage Affects Retiree Survivor Benefit Coverage There are several options available to a retiree participating in the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) with spouse or child coverage when the spouse is lost through death, divorce or annulment, and the retiree later remarries. Unless former-spouse coverage is elected as part of a divorce, retirees who remarry have three choices.
The DFAS should be promptly notified of the remarriage to avoid a large debt for unpaid premiums. Simply getting your new spouse an ID card does not update your pay records with DFAS. You must notify DFAS separately. Additional rules apply, such as: • The member may not add child coverage by virtue of the remarriage alone if child coverage was previously bypassed.
1. Resume the prior level of spouse coverage. 2. Elect not to resume spouse coverage. This election will not affect existing child coverage, if any. This election is irrevocable.
• Child coverage may not be eliminated based upon a remarriage. • The level of coverage may not be reduced upon remarriage. A retiree married at retirement that declines SBP spouse coverage cannot later enroll in the plan for that spouse or any future spouse unless during a congressionally approved open enrollment period. Normally, penalties and extra charges are assessed during these periods.
3. If the original election was for reduced coverage, the retiree may request that the base amount be increased up to and including full retired pay. If the third option is elected, the retiree must pay the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) the difference between the SBP cost previously paid and the costs, with interest, which would have been paid if the higher level of coverage had originally been elected. This additional payment must be completed before the first anniversary of marriage. If payment is not completed before the first anniversary of marriage, the election is null and void, and spouse coverage will be resumed at the previous level. If partial payment has been made on the amount due for increased coverage, a refund of the partial payment will be made.
A new spouse becomes an eligible beneficiary on the first anniversary of marriage or the birth of a child of the marriage, if earlier. As an exception, a spouse divorced from a retiree becomes an eligible beneficiary immediately upon remarriage if the member: • Retired after Sep 20, 1972 and initially elected coverage for that spouse at retirement, or • Retired before Sep 20, 1972 and elected coverage for that spouse during the initial enrollment period for retirees.
Retirees must notify the DFAS of their desired election within one year of the new marriage or the first option, listed above, automatically takes effect the date the new spouse becomes an eligible beneficiary.
For more information on this, contact the DFAS at 1-800-321-1080.

HAPPENINGS MCCS Happenings
LIBRARY New Titles Fallen Angel: A Novel by Daniel Silva. Gabriel Allon, an international operative, has a deep appreciation for all that is beautiful. He’s also an angel of vengeance who will stop at nothing to see justice done. Sometimes he must journey far in search of evil and sometimes the evil comes to him. This time he finds himself in Rome, a beautiful but deadly place. The Twilight War: The Secret History of America’s Thirty-Year Conflict with Iran by David Crist. In this well-researched book, historian and former Marine, Crist makes the case that the United States is already enmeshed in a hidden war with Iran that has raged unacknowledged for decades. This shadow war is characterized by espionage, assassination plots, and frequent eruptions of open hostilities, and exacerbated by egregious missteps and blunders by both sides. Black List by Brad Thor. A deadly list deep inside the U.S. government contains names that no one gets to see except the president. Once your name is added to “the list”, it doesn’t come off until you’re dead! Unbeknownst to former Navy SEAL Team 6 member turned covert counterterrorism expert Scott Harvath, his name has been added and now he’s being tracked down by teams dispatched to kill him. Friends Forever: A Novel by Danielle Steel. The two girls and three boys first met at the Atwood School as children and became inseparable. Known to outsiders as ‘The Big Five,’ they leaned on one another through childhood and adolescence. But as they headed off to college, their lives diverged and some friends were lost forever leaving those that remained to try to understand how bonds that once seemed unbreakable couldn’t protect them now. The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner. Ruth, 23, headed west with her 70-year-old grandmother in tow, hoping to get hired as a television writer. Now, four years later, she’s celebrating the pending release of the first sitcom she’s written. The only thing that threatens its success is demanding actors, numbercrunching executives, a crush on her boss, and her grandmother’s planned wedding. Backfire by Catherine Coulter. Judge Ramsey Hunt, presiding over the trial of two persons accused in a string of murders, suspects that the federal prosecuting attorney has been threatened. His suspicions are confirmed when the Judge is shot in the back. Agents Lacey Sherlock and Dillon Savich, longtime friends of the judge, learn of the shooting and receive an ominous note from the shooter: “You deserve this for what you did.”

Earth Unaware: The First Formic War by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston. The beginning of a prequel series to Card’s iconic Ender’s Game yarns; this greatly expands on material from the existing backstory and a suite of Marvel comics. The incredibly fast spaceship from interstellar space when boarded turns out to contain alien, insectoid life-form that is warlike to the nth degree. At the end, the survivors are high-tailing it for earth to bring warning of this new horror that the universe has spawned. Line of Fire by Stephen White. Alan Gregory, a clinical psychologist, is focusing his energy on his practice when his greatest fear comes to fruition. He has a dangerous secret that may now be exposed by a new witness who has surfaced in the suicide death of a woman named J. Winter Brown, which he and his friend, Sam Purdy, were involved in. Now, the once cold trail back to them has turned whitehot. Coup D’Etat by Harry Turtledove. In Turtledove’s usual ‘what if’ style, he asks readers to contemplate what might have happened if Chamberlain had chosen not to appease Hitler? How would lives have changed? How would history or the world have changed? He answers this by exploring the lives of simple soldiers and civilians, as well as historic leaders. This is from the War That Came Early series.

The Spymasters by W.E.B. Griffin and William E. Butterworth IV. In the summer of 1943, two of the Allies’ most important plans for World War II are at risk. As a result, President Roosevelt turns to OSS spy chief Wild Bill Donovan to remedy the situation. In the weeks to come Donovan and his team must fight the enemy in the field, as well as enemies from within who are feeding secrets to the Soviets. This is from the Men at War series.

Personal Financial Management Program Budget – A Tool to Help Establish Financial Control and Direction The word “budget” often stirs up negative feelings in us – strict, confining, no flexibility. Consequently, sitting down to develop a monthly budget is often seen as a less than desirable undertaking. However, developing a realistic budget can be a positive experience since it can help meet financial goals while, simultaneously, being able to meet any unforeseen financial event. A budget can help: • Track where money goes each month – allowing adjustments to be made • Avoid wasting money • Prepare for unexpected expenses • Save and Invest for long-term goals For couples in a relationship, it is particularly important that both individuals are involved in the budgeting process and are “on the same page” regarding goals and budget decisions. Developing a budget with a professional is a good way to get started. Our Personal Financial Management Program Specialists are here to help you at no costs. To get started, simply contact: Chuck Mathieu, PFM MCRD Parris Island 228-2218 Dale Wilkes, PFM MCAS Beaufort 228-7055

Many good things, and some bad, compete for your precious time: work, family, church, hobbies, and PT to name a few. A college course will require several hours a week, but it can be worth it. Completing a college course provides increased promotion opportunities either by points or additional comments on fitness reports. It can increase specific job skills and higher thinking skills. A college class can produce new friend opportunities, and can fill time slots where some Marines find themselves bored, not to mention the fun of learning when you are taking classes you have chosen because they are of interest to you. So even though taking a college class may sound like a sacrifice, it really can provide much more than it costs, especially when tuition assistance may pay 100%.

Troops to Teachers
Troops to Teachers (TTT) provides counseling and referral services to military personnel interested in beginning a second career in public education as a teacher. The DANTES Troops to Teachers office will help applicants identify teacher certification requirements, programs leading to certification and employment opportunities. TTT is a federal program designed to assist eligible military personnel in achieving their goal of becoming a teacher in the public school system of the United States, Grades K-12. It does not include the Department of Defense schools. The eligibility requirements for the program are based on federal legislation. Operates on two levels: national and state. The national office processes all registration for the program and manages the funding. The state offices are responsible for issues relative to certification (licensure) and employment. For more information visit http://www. proudtoserveagain.com/ or call 800-231-6242, DSN: 922-1320.
