Welcome to our 49th annual Air Show and Open House. We are proud to kick-off the Marine Corps’ first aviation event for 2011 by celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation. This year, you will have the opportunity to observe several Navy and Marine Corps World War II era Vintage Warbirds in flight and an amazing Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) demonstration which includes fixed and rotary wing aircraft supporting ground operations. You’ll also be awed by the brilliant display of power and agility of the Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier, the Navy’s newest F/A-18E Super Hornet and various talented civilian performers. Above all, you will have the opportunity to interact with all the men and women who proudly wear the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Make no mistake, our nation is at war and the Marines and Sailors of MCAS Yuma have answered the call. In fact, every deployable unit here has deployed either to Afghanistan or Iraq several times. MCAS Yuma’s mission is to provide aviation training ranges that are critical to our nation’s Global War on Terrorism. However, our mission which is critical to our national defense would be difficult to accomplish without the tremendous support we receive from the Yuma community. We continually seek creative training opportunities to prepare our Marines and Sailors for combat and Yuma has supported us by allowing the use of the local community to add realism to our training. On behalf of all the Marines, Sailors, Civilians and family members of MCAS Yuma, I thank you for your support. Enjoy the show. U. S. Marine Corps Sincerely, M. A. Werth Colonel, Commanding Officer, MCAS Yuma

centennial of naval aviation
Did you know?! This year marks 100 years of aviation for the Navy! From propellers to jet engines, our flying force has come a considerable distance... Imagine what the next century will reveal!
This year we have an exciting challenge for you! On page four of this program, there is a list of what we like to call “static displays”, or planes that are on display but will not be flying in the show this year. Next to each plane is a square to get the initials from each owner. If you can bring your program with the correct initials by Intermission - you could win a prize! Listen for the announcement on where the turn-in point is... Now, go get those initials! Gates have opened!

F-5N (VMFT 401) Training and adversary combat tactics. On any day of the week, Marine Corps air crews face off against some of the finest adversary fighter pilots in the world. They fight an “enemy” who probably has more experience, more skill, and who rarely makes mistakes. Fortunately for them, they are fighting the Snipers of Marine Fighter Training Squadron (VMFT) 401. These experienced air combat tacticians are masters in the art of air combat tactics training. Their job is to play the bad guy in order to teach Marine pilots about the threats they are likely to face in the world of aerial warfare. This year 401, the Sniper Squadron celebrates their 25th anniversary. Help us to congratulate them with a cheer as they scream by airshow center!
This is an EXPLOSIVE display of Marine Corps power. A MAGTF is a self-sustaining combined-arms force organized for a specific mission. The four elements— Command, Ground Combat, Aviation Combat and Combat Service Support—work seamlessly together. Members of the MAGTF train together, deploy together, respond to crises together and, when called upon, fight together

The Legacy Flight program matches today’s frontline fighters with their predecessors in close flight maneuvers at air shows nationwide. Our USN F-18 Tactical demonstrators fly on the wings of the past.
The Marine Air-Ground Task Force Demonstration displays the coordinated use of close air support, armor, and artillery and infantry forces. As helicopters, Hornets and Harriers fill the sky, paratroopers drop and infantry platoons move in on their objective. The men and women of the Marine Corps show their finelyhoned skills, and the Air Show audience is smack dab in the middle of the action.

The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. The U.S. Navy is the largest in the world; its battle fleet tonnage is greater than that of the next 13 largest navies combined. The United States Army is the main branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. It is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military, The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.
Joining the U.S. Military can be one of the most challenging and rewarding decisions you ever make. This being said, it is something you want to carefully consider before taking the plunge. If you wish to discuss your options, a military representative from one of the five branches listed to the right will be available to answer all the questions you may have.

At an airshow, I even get to talk about it! I hope I bring some of the fun of flying to what I offer.

A little help, from our friends
The Yuma Airshow is put on by the Marine Corps, but it simply could not be possible without the generous support from our sponsors:
What is the Centennial of Naval Aviation?
What is Naval Aviation?
The Centennial of Naval Aviation marks 100 years of progress and achievement. One hundred years ago, on May 8, 1911 Navy Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, officer in charge of aviation, prepared contract specifications to purchase the Navy’s first aircraft. In the 100 years since, Naval Aviation has grown from a tactical afterthought to a primary instrument of America’s national security. 2011, marks the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation - a historic milestone unparalleled by any other celebration. Below is a sampling of those planes.
Naval Aviation is a term used to describe the community of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft, pilots, maintainers, and crews that fly in the maritime environment. Together, these three branches create the unified maritime forces of the United States protecting America by air, land and sea.

The Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft, earning the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942–1953).
The first United States Navy and United States Marine Corps fighter that could exceed Mach 1 in level flight.
It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, by the mid 1960s.
Designed to replace the United States Navy/Marines F/A18, and AV-8B tactical fighter aircraft, a common design was planned in three variants that share 80 percent of their parts.
place on June 25, 1928.
On May 8, 1911 Captain Washington Irving Chambers, U.S. Navy, Officer-In-Charge of Aviation, prepared the requisition for the Navy’s first aircraft to be purchased from aviator and inventor Glenn H. Curtiss, marking the birth of Naval Aviation. On May 22, 1912, Marine Corps First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham reported to Annapolis, Maryland, for flight training, marking the birth of Marine Corps Aviation. The operation of aircraft from Navy ships was a revolutionary step in U.S. military history which set the stage for innovations such as the inclusion of aviation in the combined arms concept, the utilization of the helicopter for troop transport, and the development of an all- Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing aviation force. Beginning January, 2011, the Marine Corps will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation in concert with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The celebration will continue throughout 2011 and extend into 2012 - the 100th anniversary year of Marine Aviation. This momentous occasion is an opportunity to celebrate the Marine Corps’ naval character side by side with our Nation’s other naval services. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the Marine Corps and Marine Aviation to our Nation’s defense. As we move forward in planning events to commemorate and celebrate, it is important to understand and communicate the role of the Marine Corps and its unique contribution to our Nation’s defense. We are a unique organization comprised of war fighting elements that, when joined together as the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), is significantly more efficient and effective than the sum of the parts. The close integration of Marine Aviation into the MAGTF is one of the ways in which the Marine Corps is unique. The combined arms operations and expeditionary capabilities pioneered by our earliest Naval aviators and refined over the years have served to make the Marine Corps a lethal force that can strike from virtually anywhere in the world at any time. Why is the Centennial a historic milestone? United States Naval Aviation’s score of successes such as the first crossing of the Atlantic by air, the victory at the Battle of Midway, and the first American in space show the progress of the past 100 years of flight. These milestones are emblematic of our country’s ingenuity and forward thinking, which are the reasons Naval Aviation exists today.
