2022
Media College Denmark / Medieskolerne and VIA Design and Business are proud to present the 2022 edition of
DANISH DESIGN MEETS PHOTOGRAPHY Through a decade, two creative institutions have joined forces in matching design students from VIA Design and Business with students of photography from Media College Denmark. Each designer has been assigned one or two photographers and the collaboration between two creative minds has resulted in new visual interpretations of the various fashion and furniture design products. The design products are the result of the creative project course in which sixth semester students work to bring forward their individual expression of design within the concepts of fashion or furniture design – from inspiration to idea process to the production of a functional prototype. The photographers have worked closely with the design students to produce the visual interpretations, we are proud to present in this booklet. Being halfway through their education, they focus on visual communication and project management, and in the designers they found a mutual, creative individual: One who had the visual vocabulary to inspire them into creating images of high quality.
KØNT KUNST
Designer: Emma Sophia Photographer: Mads Thomsen I wanted to create a design that arouse curiosity and can be seen as unique items in your wardrobe. That is why I chose expressionistic art as my main inspiration. Art is something we see as an investment that will only increase value over time. Fashion on the other hand is seen as a momentary item, that only last – or keep its value for a much shorter time. As a designer, I often choose to work with aesthetic sustainability, and how to create a design that will be used repeatedly.
BLÖÖCK THRIVE IN ABNORMALITY The collection was created around the design universe of BLÖÖCK, which is also my brand’s name. BLÖÖCK thrives in weirdness, around abnormallity and gets inspired by the questionable. This collection was no exception, since the inspiration was taken from the shapes and effects of poisonous mushrooms and berries. In addition, BLÖÖCK represents the possibilities fabric leftovers and deadstock materials can give to the fashion industry. Not to mention, how altering your garments according to your desires can change your everyday look, keeping things inspiring and highlighting everyone’s uniqueness of thinking.

As a designer, I am experimenting with shapes and colours and
the base of my design universe builds on fine details. The name of the collection is Pearl of Wisdom. The inspiration behind my design was ageing, a process that appears as a negative aspect of life due to its nature of creating a fear of losing beauty and youthfulness. I questioned the negative interpretation of ageing. The representation of it as an extraordinary process of human life that is valuable, beautiful and connects to wisdom was a key element within my concept.
PEARL OF WISDOM
Minimalism And Simplicity As a designer and men’s tailor, the craftmanship lies deep in my veins. My women’s wear collection was no exception. I was eager for it to show my passion for men’s wear, but I wanted to mix it with feminine and fragile elements.
”My collection can be mixed and matched in
various ways and easily styled up or down with very few adjustments.”
The Scandinavian minimalism and simplicity have had a big impact on my design universe as well as the traditions from men’s tailoring has an inevitable grip on me.

STEPPING INTO THE FEELINGS OF A CONTROL FREAK The storyline is about stepping into the feelings of a control freak and wanting to control. When you have the ability to control, it brings comfort, but being controlling can also cause the fear of letting go. I was inspired by the elements fluidity and sculptural. The elements are linked to having no control (fluidity) and having control (sculptural). The sculptural part is visualised as volume, round cut lines and organic shapes, contrary to fluidity shown in the loose fit, transparency and in layering.

Disturbed
Beauty
As a designer, I build my design universe upon inspiration sources that give you the opportunity to dive into an unknown universe, feeling inspired and attached to what you are seeing. These sources build upon my curly mind and bring the observer into a state where it is allowed to have your own thoughts of how to observe my design. The shown pieces are from my mushroom collection Disturbed Beauty, which shows how mushrooms are always around, seen or unseen, attracting and teaching us.
FUNCTIONALITY and powerful colours
”This dress is designed with a focus on functionality and colour choice. I hope the first thing people will notice is the colour choice. Powerful colours make me happy, and with this design I hope that the colour choice can help to spread joy. The functionality is made through detachable sleeves and adjustable straps along the side and with this I hope the user wants to explore all the details of the dress and hopefully style it exactly the way they want.”

FEMININE MEETS
MASCULINE As a designer I am inspired by the balance between the feminine and the masculine. When using two opposite elements different and interesting expressions are created. This design is an outcome of the use of two oppositions. Each material and colour represent one of the elements. Fabric manipulation was a part of the process as well, where I explored how materials can change expression. The print on the dress is handmade using a technique that changes the surface of the fabric. Designer: Mette Jeppesen

MARNIE DOUVEN MARNIE DOUVEN MARNIE DOUVEN With this collection I wanted to rethink gender norms and how it is portrayed in the fashion industry. Embracing all parts of human beings, the feminine, masculine and everything in between. Inclusion is the keyword for this collection. The garments in this collection are not linked to a specific gender, they are for whoever wishes to wear them. To make these designs last longer, they are multifunctional. You can detach and attach parts of the pieces on the jacket and the trousers.

Passion and Pain This project Passion and Pain is inspired by the world of ballet: The world of pain, sorrow but also the great passion for dance. A world that can be viewed from multiple perspectives, but where everyone actually sees only one side, namely the side of the passionate dance and the seemingly effortless movements. The shapes of the collection are inspired by the point shoes: The place where you clearly see another perspective, the pain. Beautiful on the outside, but on the inside it is mostly pain.

SCRATCHING THE BONE
SCRATCHING THE BONE is inspired by the space suits as a form of protection, an armour, of the human body. The collection is about how we humans live in a world where we are constantly exposed to things that may harm us, both physically and mentally. Therefore, we are always trying to protect ourselves. I designed a collection of oversized styles which gives this feeling of protection. At the same time, I tried to challenge this feeling by ripping off layers and make tight fitted styles which symbolise our skin, our natural armour.
Designer: Emma Aale Nielsen Photographer: Simon Kjær Brinkmann
JEAL OUSY As a designer I want to use my platform to tell a story. I often focus on colorways, materials and different types of silhouettes. This outfit represents the feeling of being jealous and the risk of being emotionally hurt. The inspiration is from a collection of paintings titled Jealousy by the Norwegian artist Edward Munch. Like paintings, people tend to put on different layers. With layers we can protect ourself from the world surrounding us. The less layers, the more naked and vulnerable it gets.

is a functional and aesthetic sustainable entrance bench. A fusion of modern production methods and old traditional craftsmanship, created in a computer–based process, where the traditional craftsmanship is important to remember and honor. Produced in FCS certified oak and rattan. The vision with the design is to create an entrance furniture that solves the practical and functional needs and at the same time is an aesthetic mark in the home. The inspiration comes from a reed warbler’s organic nest, which hangs in the vertical reeds like a sculpture.

Diving Into
Uncertainty
“The fact is we live in a youth-obsessed culture. Many people try to fit their life goals into age blocks, becoming constant chasers of their dream life.
The Diving into Uncertainty ... collection is an embodiment of the merge of two worlds (digital world and nature). My design universe is based on finding a balance between them to feel comfortable with the uncertainty of the future. Some of the pieces are made by using the upcycling method. Slow down, do not compare yourself to others and appreciate what you have.”
Designer: Patrycja Lis Photographer: Vincent Nahuel Anselmo
Adapting in a world in constant change ... The only constant in life is change. In a world in constant change, one must seek other ways to adapt and to look for a more sustainable way. Not to follow the trends of the season, but simply stop and adapt to what we already got. This is what my collection is all about - to adapt by using already existing materials. That is why I made this reversible style, to wear in different ways, made with patchwork from old gowns in only natural materials for a more sustainable creation. Designer: Maria Hviid

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT As a designer, my mission is to implement topics as inspiration which I believe to be crucial in life, like truth and being honest, or, as for this collection, called Perfectly Imperfect, mental health and bullying. I implement emotions and thoughts, that is hard to describe, in a shocking, daring, but desirable way. The design elements are inspired by reasons we are bullied during our life. With my designs I want to enrich the wearer with bravery and power, while highlighting human forms with sculptural silhouettes.

SOFT For my womenswear collection I was inspired by soul music from the 1960’s in America. It contains small details you will not see at first glance, but these will catch your attention when you look further at the collection. These details will have hidden messages of a deleted line from a soul song, which represents how the black community was treated back in the 1960’s. The lines of this dress is collected from lines of a saxophone, which leads you to the soft sounds of soul music.

TIMELESS DESIGN
As a fashion designer, I always like to start my creative process based on visual inspiration and a universe where I can depict my models in. The goal for my latest project was to combine our ancient past with the future – futuristic concepts derived from science fiction, to translate the fundamental purpose of clothes as shelters for our bodies and at the same time point to the future and the timeless design.
