With over 1,500 images, many available in a range of sizes, our museum collection spans across the many significant periods of art history from the 15th Century to the 20th Century, from Medieval to Contemporary, across continents and languages. Many of these images we have sourced directly from the museum partners we are honored to work with including the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the National Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and many others. This new catalog features nearly all of our current museum images, a collection that is constantly growing and evolving as new images are discovered and made available.

Sorted from new to old, our catalog opens with Contemporary and Modern art, and on to (pre-Modern) American and European art, closing with early Asian art. We’ve included background information on some of the important artists and movements to help tell the story of these timeless images that are recognizable and impactful even to those who don’t seek them out.

Poster Paper

McGaw’s standard poster paper is a high quality 230 gsm smooth matte poster paper. Prints on poster paper include a 1” border around the image and are shipped rolled in a tube. This paper stock is perfect for both paintings and photographs.

Giclée Paper

McGaw’s premium fine art paper is an acid free, archival textured 245 gsm giclée paper, printed with 100 year archival light-fast inks. Giclée paper prints include a 2” border around the image and are shipped rolled in a tube. This paper is similar to a traditional artist’s watercolor paper and produces a very vibrant print.

Giclée, from French is a neologism for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word “giclée” is derived from the French language word “le gicleur” meaning “nozzle”, or more specifically “gicler” meaning “to squirt, spurt, or spray”.

Canvas

McGaw’s premium artist canvas is a 20 mil (400gsm) bright white cotton/poly blend with a satin finish and a 2-over 1 weave which is highly durable, waterproof, and scratch resistant. Canvas is printed with water resistant solvent inks that are vibrant with dense blacks and bright whites. Canvas prints include a 2” border around the image and are shipped rolled in a tube. Specifically designed for the home decor market, this superior canvas delivers exceptional print quality and ease of stretching.

Alexander Calder

Color Field Painting

Color Field Painting was developed in the late 1940s as a style of abstraction that could be mythic, transcendent and infinite. All suggestion of form was discarded and replaced by color in large fields that could envelope the viewer.

American abstract painter Morris Louis was a founding member of the Washington Color School movement of the 1950s. Largely inspired by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Louis’ inventive painting technique utilized vertical stains of color on raw canvas resulting in dramatic color studies.

Mark Rothko

Artist Mark Rothko sought to communicate human emotions such as tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and more through his paintings. His early work from the 1940s included biomorphic forms largely inspired by European Surrealism which would later evolve into floating zones of color over colored grounds, a style which would become his hallmark.

Abstract Expressionism

Art as the expression of self, rising from emotional depth and universal themes that emerged from the anxieties of the post-war world define the Abstract Expressionist art movement. In an act of liberation from the constraints of the traditional easel, in the mid-1940s artist Jackson Pollock affixed unstretched raw canvas to the floor of his studio, painting in his signature “drip style” whereby he used sticks, trowels, or knives to drip and splatter, or sometimes pour the paint directly onto the canvas. Pollock’s works, also called “action paintings,” were reminiscent of the Surrealist notions of the subconscious and automatic painting, leading to the further development of Abstract Expressionism.

Social Realism

The Social Realism art movement grew from the turbulent period of the 1920s and 1930s. This period in history saw global economic depression, racial conflict, and the international rise of fascist regimes along with the Mexican and Russian revolutions. Artists of the Social Realism movement created figurative works depicting the “masses”: working classes, labor unionists, and the politically disenfranchised. Art became a weapon that could combat the capitalist exploitation of workers.

Grant Wood – American Gothic

American Gothic, Grant Wood’s most famous work, is also one of the most famous paintings in American art. The painting depicts a farmer standing beside his spinster daughter, the title referring to the Gothic Revival style of the window which appears on the house behind the pair. Painted at the onset of the Great Depression, it came to be viewed as a depiction of steadfast American pioneer spirit. Wood is associated with the American movement of Regionalism, which advanced figurative painting of rural American themes while rejecting European abstraction.

Henri Matisse

Throughout his long artistic career Henri Matisse sought a way to unite color and line in a harmonious manner. His early works are defined by their intense colorism as part of the Fauvism movement. He moved on to paint in a style that emphasized flattened forms and decorative pattern, and then painted in the classical tradition of French painting which was more relaxed. In his later years, he worked in the medium of cut paper collage when ill health prevented him from painting. Along with Picasso, Matisse is regarded as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts in the early 20th century.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau style flourished between 1890 and 1910 in the United States and Europe. Characterized by its use of sinuous, organic lines, Art Nouveau style was used in architecture, interior design, jewelry, posters and illustration. Art Nouveau was a modernization of historical design styles, with artists drawing inspiration from both organic and geometric forms, emphasizing linear contours rather than color, which was usually more muted.

Alphonse Mucha

The illustrations, advertisements, and designs created by Alphonse Mucha are some of the best-known images of the Art Nouveau period. Mucha gained fame in Paris in 1895 when one of his posters created for the superstar Sarah Bernhardt initiated the distinctive “Style Mucha” and established the artist as the pre-eminent French Art Nouveau artist.

Symbolism

Suggesting ideas through symbols with emphasis on the meaning behind forms, lines, shapes and colors was the key to the Symbolist art movement. Expressionism

The origins of Expressionism can be traced back to early 20th century Germany as an artistic response to the widespread anxiety about humanity’s increasingly discordant relationship with the world. The movement was inspired most heavily by Symbolism, with Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh proving to be influential to the movement through their use of strong color and distortion of form to convey feelings of anxiety and yearning. Edvard Munch’s most famous work “The Scream” is the artist’s emotional response to a scene that he encountered, illustrating the Expressionist theme of general anxiety toward the tangible world.

Post Impressionism

Vincent Van Gogh

Largely self-taught and unappreciated during his lifetime, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh decided to become an artist at age 27.  During his decade-long career he created nearly 900 paintings and more than 1,100 works on paper.  His early work featured dark portraits of Dutch peasants and rural landscapes.  After moving to Paris, his palette became brighter and he started experimenting with shorter more expressive brushstrokes, impasto, and complementary colors.  These new works define the bolder Post-Impressionist style that he is best known for.

Vincent van Gogh Landscapes

After leaving Paris Vincent van Gogh spent a year in Arles in Southeastern France. Over the next 12 months, he created stunning landscapes depicting blossoming fruit trees, views of towns, and other scenes. After suffering a mental breakdown, he moved to a mental asylum in Saint-Remy, where he created his most famous work “The Starry Night” and other iconic works which had a bolder, more visionary look that those created in Arles.

While living in Arles, Vincent van Gogh created three distinct paintings of his bedroom in the “Yellow House” where he resided. The first version was created a month after he moved into the first home he could call his own. After painting a suite of canvases to fill the walls of his new home, he was exhausted and bedridden for days. This time inspired him to paint his bedroom, where he was confined. He went on to create two other paintings, one almost identical and the other on a smaller canvas.

Vincent van Gogh Portraits

Over the course of his lifetime, Vincent van Gogh painted around 36 self-portraits. His self-portraits are immediately recognizable for the intense gaze of the artist, and his gaunt features and red hair and beard. In addition to his self-portraits, Vincent painted many portraits of people he encountered in his early days in the Netherlands and later during his time in France. Some of his subjects included shop owners, the postman and his family, his doctor, and other friends, family, and acquaintances. His portraiture relays the inner qualities of his sitters and van Gogh’s own relationship with them through his use of color and expressive brushstrokes.

The work of Paul Gauguin left a legacy that would inspire artists and art movements to come. His naturalistic forms and “primitive” subject matter would inspire young artists to pursue less traditional non-Western motifs, touching on more spiritual and supernatural aspects of the human experience. Some of his most recognized art was created in Tahiti depicting native women in lush, tropical landscapes. He used color with freedom and distorted forms for expressive purposes, pioneering the Symbolist art movement in France and what would lead to Fauvism and Expressionism.

Paul Cezanne

With a unique method of building form with color and an analytical approach to nature, Paul Cezanne is one of the most significant artists in the history of modern painting, going on to influence the development of Cubism, Fauvism, and other avant-garde art movements. In his painting, Cezanne applied pigments to the canvas in a series of small, methodical brushstrokes as though he were “constructing” an image rather than “painting” it, resulting in works that have a feeling of overall structural integrity.

Spending much of her adult life in France, Pennsylvania-born artist Mary Stevenson Cassatt was a friend of Edgar Degas, later becoming the only American artists to exhibit with the Impressionists. Impressionism

Considered to be the first distinctly modern movement in painting, Impressionism was developed in Paris in the 1860’s. The influence of Impressionism soon spread throughout Europe and on to the United States. William Merritt Chase

American Impressionist artist William Merritt Chase rejected a pre-determined life running his father’s shoe business, and instead studied abroad to become a painter. A follower of French Impressionism, Chase implemented the brushwork technique and treatment of light used by the Impressionists overseas, creating celebrated landscape, cityscape and still life paintings. He went on to open the Chase School of Art in New York, which would later be renamed the Parsons New School for Design.

Camille Pissarro

A pivotal artist and mentor within the Impressionist movement, Camille Pissarro was the only painter to exhibit in all 8 Impressionist exhibitions organized between 1874 and 1886. Pissarro created paintings of the everyday life of French peasants and other rural subjects, with a special interest in nature under different light and atmospheric conditions. In addition to rural subjects, Pissarro created a series of 14 views of the Boulevard Montmartre in Paris in 1897. Through these works he studied the same scene through snow, rain, fog, daylight, and evening conditions.

As a founding member of the Impressionist movement in the late 1880s, Claude Monet was fascinated with depicting the effects of light and shadow on color. Monet Water Lilies

Claude Monet’s epic Water Lily series can be cited as his most famous and celebrated series of paintings. These late works were produced in his beloved flower garden at his home in Giverny between 1897 and his death in 1926. These paintings featured different elements from the garden including a Japanese footbridge, plants, and trees in addition to the waterlilies floating atop the water garden and pond.

Edouard Manet

French modernist painter Edouard Manet was one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life, making him a key figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Modern Photography

From the early 1900s through the 1960s, photographers began to produce works that had a sharp focus and emphasis on formal qualities. This new approach abandoned the Pictorialist mode with soft focus and painterly quality and adopted a more straightforward documentation of modern life through unadulterated images. American Art

Art creation in the United States can be traced back to indigenous cultures, with the Native Americans’ creation of ritual and utilitarian objects. When the Europeans arrived centuries later, their influence emerged in the portraits and landscape paintings that were created, including the Hudson River School of the mid 19th century, perhaps the earliest and most cohesive movement created by American artists up to that point.

Hudson River School

This mid-19th century American art movement was formed by a group of landscape painters who were searching for a national style of art. Largely influenced by Romanticism, these artists saw the American landscape itself, vast and untamed, as the primary focus of this new movement. They mainly depicted the Hudson River Valley and surrounding areas including the Catskill, Adirondack and White Mountains. Thomas Cole is generally acknowledged as the founder of the Hudson River School, which also included artists Frederic Edwin Church, John Frederick Kensett, Sanford Robinson Gifford and others.

Albert Bierstadt

German-American painter Albert Bierstadt is celebrated for his sweeping, dramatic landscapes of the American West. After spending time in Europe, Bierstadt was able to apply his considerable experience painting the alpine peaks to his depictions of the Rocky Mountains and the sweeping vistas of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Bierstadt often altered details of his landscapes to create the effect of awe and grandeur, resulting in works that became tremendously popular.

Thomas Cole

As the often-credited founder of the Hudson River School of painting, Thomas Cole sought to capture the sublime beauty of the American wilderness through his work. Born in England, he moved to the United States as a young man, bringing the eye of a European Romantic landscape painter to the burgeoning country. Fitz Hugh Lane — Luminism

American painter Fitz Hugh Lane worked in a style that would later be called Luminism for its use of pervasive light. Luminism was related to the Transcendentalist writings by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry Davis Thoreau, which promoted the immersion of oneself in nature in order to truly know oneself and become closer with the divine. The artistic style was marked by a particular rendering of light with a uniform glow that infuses the entire scene.

Currier & Ives

Based in New York city between 1835 and 1907, Currier & Ives was a successful printmaking firm headed first by Nathaniel Currier and later jointly with his partner James Merritt Ives. Edward Hicks

America folk painter Edward Hicks created naïve depictions of farms and rural landscapes, with his most famous work being “The Peaceable Kingdom”. “The Peaceable Kingdom” showcases his belief (as a Quaker) that his native Pennsylvania was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of harmony between all men and beasts. He painted around 100 versions of this scene, with about 25 still existing today.

Early American Portraits

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, artists in the United States primarily painted portraits, along with some landscapes, the style of which relied heavily on English painting. In Colonial America, portraits were only available to the few who could afford them, with availability gradually expanding as the economy grew. A group of largely self-taught portraitists emerged to serve their middle-class patrons who wished to preserve their likeness as a record of family lineage.

Historical Presidential Portraits

Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington began the longstanding tradition of US presidents having their official portrait created during their time in office. Considered one of the most successful American portrait painters of the 18th century, Gilbert Stuart was a pioneer in bringing the brushy style of English portraiture to the United States. He was a prolific painter creating over 1,100 portraits over the course of his career, his most famous being those of George Washington. He admired the work of his predecessor John Singleton Copley and developed his own style which was built on the belief that a successful portrait captured the sitter’s character as well as likeness.

French feminist artist Rosa Bonheur was the foremost “animalier” (animal painter) of her age, along with her English counter-part Edwin Landseer. Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun

Despite the challenge of being a woman artist in the 18th century, Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun went on to become a leading artist in Europe commanding the highest prices for her portraits. In 1778, her fame was secured when she was commissioned to paint a portrait of the young Queen Marie Antoinette (the first of what would become 30 portraits). In addition to her talent as an artist, Vigee Le Brun was also a lively conversationalist who put her sitters at ease. The resulting portraits show each sitter in a relaxed yet animated disposition. She produced around 800 paintings overall from an extensive list of royal patrons who sought her flattering portrayals.

Medieval Tapestries

In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, a rich tapestry panel woven with symbolic emblems, mottoes, or coats of arms called a baldachin, canopy of state or cloth of state was hung behind and over a throne as a symbol of authority. The seat under such a canopy of state would normally be raised on a dais. The iconography of most Western tapestries goes back to written sources, the Bible and Ovid’s Metamorphoses being two popular choices. Apart from the religious and mythological images, hunting scenes are the subject of many tapestries produced for indoor decoration. In the famed “Unicorn Tapestries” created at the turn of the 16th century, a group of noblemen and hunters are depicted in pursuit of a unicorn through a bucolic French landscape through a series of seven tapestries.

Katsushika Hokusai

Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai was an ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known for his woodblock print series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” which he created at the age of 70 and includes the iconic image “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”. He was incredibly prolific throughout his life, producing around 30,000 works. These images went on to inspire Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet and Edgar Degas who encountered his work when Japan opened its borders in the 1850s.

Ando Hiroshige

Japanese ukiyo-e artist Ando Hiroshige (also known as Utagawa Hiroshige) is considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige’s most famous works include “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” and “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”, and were inspired by the work of his predecessor Katsushika Hokusai. Hiroshige’s work was softer and more poetic than Hokusai’s, the artist using subtle colors, often printing with multiple impressions in the same area with extensive use of bokashi (color gradation). The vision of Japan that Hiroshige created through his prints had a widespread appeal in Japan and abroad, inspiring European Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Art Nouveau artists who adopted his themes and treatment of line and color.

Thank you for purchasing art prints from McGaw Graphics, Inc. (“McGaw” and “McGaw Prints”). In buying these products from McGaw, you are agreeing to be bound by the following terms for their sale and distribution. If you do not agree to these terms, you should not buy these McGaw Prints.

Copyright :

The content, graphics, designs and other materials related to the McGaw Prints are protected under applicable copyrights, trademarks and other proprietary rights.

Permitted Sales Channels and Uses:

You are free to sell these McGaw Prints through your gallery or retail store, and through any website you own or control, at prices established in the ordinary course of business and in your sole discretion. Transfer of McGaw Prints to a different medium, such as canvas, wood, acrylic, and glass, without express written permission, is strictly prohibited, as is the utilization of any process that gives the appearance that an image has been printed on a different medium, such as imprinting a canvas texture on a paper print. No McGaw Print may be advertised for sale as a product on a medium other than what it was printed and sold as by McGaw Graphics.

Unlawful Activity:

We reserve the right to investigate complaints or reported violations of this Agreement. If McGaw believes there has been a violation of the Terms of this Agreement, McGaw shall give the Customer notice and a reasonable opportunity to correct the perceived problem. Following such notice, McGaw may take any action we deem appropriate, including but not limited to seeking injunctive relief.

Termination of Right to Purchase:

You agree that McGaw may terminate your ability to purchase McGaw Prints in the future if, in its reasonable opinion, and in the exercise of its business judgment, McGaw believes that you have violated or acted inconsistently with the letter or spirit of this Agreement.

Payment Terms:

To establish an account with McGaw Graphics, you must submit an application. A copy of a Resale certificate, sales permit, or business authorization must be submitted with the application.

All fees quoted are subject to change. All values are US Dollars.

Net 30, date of invoice. No discount allowed for early payment.

New accounts will be opened on credit card at time of shipment terms. We accept Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover.

If you wish to receive credit terms, please submit three business references for business with whom you currently operate on credit terms.

COD – A surcharge of $12.50 per package will be added to your invoice.

Business checks are also accepted as form of payment. A $25.00 fee for any check refused for insufficient funds and subsequent payment must be made with Cashier’s Check, inclusive of all fees.

Pro-forma invoices are available upon request.

All banking fees for wire transfers, from both sending and receiving bank, are the responsibility of the payer.

Past due invoices will accrue a finance charge at 18% per annum (1.5% per month).

Minimum Orders:

• $50.00 - for ship-to addresses in the United States and Canada.

• $100.00 - for international ship-to addresses.

• Orders below the minimum order stated above are subject to a $7.50 small order charge.

Order Changes:

We will try our best to accommodate amendments to confirmed orders that have been placed with us; however, this is generally not possible because of our automated order handling system.

Back Orders:

In the rare event an item is not available at the time of shipment, it will not be backordered.

Shipment:

If all items are available in stock to be picked, orders received by 12:00 pm (EST) will likely be shipped the same day via our preferred shipper, FedEx. We will pre-pay the shipping and add it to your invoice. At your request, we can ship via UPS or other forwarders and third party bill the shipping to your account number with that forwarder.

In general, orders will ship complete within 3 to 5 business days.

Large quantity orders (skus and/or units) will be quoted for ship date.

Additional surcharges will be incurred for residential deliveries and for shipments requesting Saturday delivery.

International orders may be shipped ground to a USA-based freight forwarder or direct to country. International shipments are subject to charges based on dimensional weight if it exceeds actual weight.

A delivery area surcharge may apply to shipments destined to select U.S. ZIP codes and international addresses.

U.S. Express Package Services and U.S. Ground Services will incur a $55 per package surcharge for oversize packages. The maximum limits for FedEx Express U.S. packages are 150 lbs., and 119 inches in length and 165 inches in length and girth. Packages that weigh 150 lbs. or less and exceed 108 inches in length or 130 inches in length and girth are considered “oversize” packages.

Bulk and Export orders are shipped by customer’s choice of common carrier and shipping is billed directly to customer by carrier.

Shipments will be made to the address designated on the purchase order as long as that shipping address is compliant with U.S. export laws and regulations. No order will be shipped contrary to U.S. export laws and regulations.

All sales are on an EXW - EX WORKS (Sunderland, VT) basis. As a result, risk of loss and title of the purchased items pass to you upon delivery of the items to the carrier. It is your responsibility for filing any claims with carriers for damaged and/or lost shipments.

Returns:

We do not accept product returns for credit.

Shortages:

Any shortages must be reported to Customer Service within 48 hours of receipt of shipment.

Damages & Replacements:

We will gladly replace defective or incorrect posters.

If the outer shipping package is damaged, please refuse the order and notify us immediately.

If a damaged package is accepted in error, please save the package, its contents and all packing materials, and contact us immediately.

All claims for damages or errors must be submitted to us within three business days from receipt of the order.

We are not responsible for the replacement of defective or incorrect posters once they have been mounted and/or framed.

Color & Size Disclaimer:

Great efforts are made to represent colors and dimensions in the catalog and online as accurately as possible – however, color and size variances may occur. We do not accept returns because of color and size variance, or if your customer cancels their order.

We recommend that frames, mats or glass never be precut based on dimensions printed in the catalog or presented online.

Governing Law:

These terms and conditions will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Vermont. Any action seeking legal or equitable relief arising out of or relating to these terms and conditions shall be brought only in the courts of the State of Vermont or the United States District Court of Vermont, Burlington.
