ave you ever been caught between two design styles and needing to come to a decision on which you prefer? Let’s pretend that was a rhetorical question because chances are – whether you’re involved in the architecture or design industry or even just a keen observer – you’ve been faced with such a dilemma countless times. There are so many directions in which the architecture and interior design of a house can go and while they all have compelling drawcards, they may not necessarily match each other – and so we’re left with a decision to make. A predicament, if you will. As architects and interior designers it’s not an easy decision to negotiate the whole Catch-22, but for residents and homeowners it’s even harder – they’re the ones that need to live in (and with) – the end result.

It’s certainly true that industry professionals may have an aesthetic preference, but don’t forget that they also get to work across many projects which more than likely speak to different design styles. After all, a contemporary project one day could be followed by a heritage listed house the next; a Brutalist building the day after; a mid-century apartment loft the week following that. To put it bluntly, they get to have their cake and eat it, too. But the owners of this house in Malvern, Melbourne, in the face of this very dilemma, made a decision. While they loved their Edwardian-style home’s period charm, they needed the ease and simplicity of a contemporary domestic space to raise their young family. But rather than relocate, they reinvented. 4

Working with the team at one of Australia’s most innovative architectural firms, the family retained the front façade and added a second storey towards the rear to make the most of an enviable northern aspect. Updated informal living spaces find their place at ground level and open out to an outdoor entertaining area and pool while the children’s bedroom are above.

Consistently using a tonal scheme of bright, fjord-esque interiors, accented with bolder and more graphic exterior touches, the home is suffused with a sleek, elegant sensibility. Textural contrasts and a general play of light contribute to bringing the house’s past into conversation with its present – a tough feat that most similar projects cannot pull off with such effortless charm. Throughout the home, large windows are set deep into the façade to simultaneously provide solar protection and advantageous views of the suburb’s greenery and parklands nearby. I guess this family got to have their cake and eat it, too.
