from the editor’s desk EVERYTHING NH FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW, AND MUCH MORE Welcome to the 2017 edition of Parenting New Hampshire’s Family Resource Guide, our annual compendium for Granite State parents and families. When we compile the Family Resource Guide our goal is to produce a publication that you’ll reference time and time again throughout the year. Whether you are a lifelong resident or have just moved into the state (welcome!) we know you will learn something new. In the 2017 edition, you’ll find articles on what you need to know before starting yoga, buying used sports equipment, how to change careers, making the most out of a parent-teacher conference, and more. Also, check out our listings that cover everything from health and wellness providers to enrichment programs to special needs. If you still can’t find what you are looking for, go to www.parentingnh.com and click on the resources tab to access our database that contains thousands of listings. Whether you are looking for a preschool, a place to go this summer, or a pediatrician, you’ll find it there. In addition, as the seasons change our site is the place to go to find lists of the best places to go ice skating, swimming holes or hiking trails. We are always adding information, resources and events so you can find something fun to do with your family year-round. Parenting New Hampshire magazine is the state’s premier resource for par-
ents in families statewide. More than 20,000 copies are distributed to hundreds of locations statewide each month. Check out our three other special publications: NH Next: Your Guide to Life After High School, Stepping Stones NH: A guidebook for people with disabilities, their families and the professionals who support them, and the Family Summer Fun Guide. Also, don’t miss our Camp Fairs held every year in March. And be sure to follow us between issues on www.parentingnh.com, on Twitter @ParentingNH or on Facebook.

trying yoga? Thinking about
Here’s how to get started
W
hile obviously a physical activity, yoga is unique in its ability to equally engage the mind and spirit. It is also a practice that can be enjoyed by the entire family, said Jennifer Desrosiers, a teacher at SOULFIRE Power Yoga in Greenland.
“Yoga is a way of living,” she said. “The physical practice of doing poses – also known as asana – is only one aspect of yoga.” For her and other practitioners, yoga helps to create a union or awareness around the relationship of mind, body and spirit, which is particularly important today. “Yoga can be an amazing tool to combat the effects of our sedentary lifestyles,” she said. In getting started with yoga, Desrosiers said most studios are family friendly. Some even have infant, children, or teen-specific classes. “I’m a big proponent of learning the basics of yoga from an experienced teacher,” she said. “This is critical specifically if you or anyone in your family have any injuries or physical limitations.” As far where to go to get started, she suggests parents (and kids) explore the various styles of yoga at different studios. “It’s important to find a style and community in alignment with your ideas and comfort level,” she added. And it shouldn’t cost you a lot of money
to try it out. Desrosiers said studios often offer first classes for free or introductory periods at a low price. Also, families should not concern themselves with the purchase of the right mat or clothing. “Yoga studios have them available for rent,” she said. “Just bring a towel and bottle of water and wear comfortable clothes in layers so you can adjust based on the temperature of the room.” In recounting how she first became involved with yoga, she said she began to practice it in her early 20s. She said her first yoga class was at Bikram Yoga Portsmouth with Sara Curry. “I loved the heated practice and eventually discovered a heated power yoga studio close to my house where I practiced for several years,” she said. Her love for the practice of yoga led her to become a teacher in 2013, which she said began her own wellness journey. During this time, she made significant changes in her diet, began to explore her personal core values, and ultimately made significant adjustments in her life to better align with her “true north.” “Developing a dedicated yoga practice truly gave me the confidence to pursue the life that I had dreamed about,” she said. Rob Levey is a frequent contributor to Parenting New Hampshire.

Before you begin ❂ Do not use yoga to replace conventional medical care or to postpone seeing a health care provider about pain or any other medical condition. ❂ If you have a medical condition, talk to your health care provider before starting yoga. ❂ Ask a trusted source (such as your health care provider or a nearby hospital) to recommend a yoga practitioner. Find out about the training and experience of any practitioner you are considering. ❂ Everyone's body is different, and yoga postures should be modified based on individual abilities. Carefully selecting an instructor who is experienced with and attentive to your needs is an important step toward helping you practice yoga safely. Ask about the physical demands of the type of yoga in which you are interested and inform your yoga instructor about any medical issues you have. ❂ Carefully think about the type of yoga you are interested in. For example, hot yoga (such as Bikram yoga) may involve standing and moving in humid environments with temperatures as high as 105 degrees. Because such settings may be physically stressful, people who practice hot yoga should take certain precautions. These include drinking water before, during, and after a hot yoga practice and wearing suitable clothing. People with conditions that may be affected by excessive heat, such as heart disease, lung disease, and a prior history of heatstroke may want to avoid this form of yoga. Women who are pregnant may want to check with their health care providers before starting hot yoga. ❂ Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

How to get the most out of your
parent-teacher con
EDUCATION & CHILDCARE
Being proactive with your child’s teacher instead of waiting until there’s a problem is key By Melanie Plenda
T
he moment you’re walking out of a meeting with your child’s teacher is the worst moment to think of your best question.
The parent-teacher conference is a valuable time to not only check in on how your child is doing in school, but also to make that important home-school connection. “Being involved, meeting teachers, and engaging in conferences can do more than keeping on top of [students'] progress or grades,” Monadnock Regional High School English teacher Bethany Maynard said. “Conferences also let everyone know what expectations teachers and schools have for different courses and what supports there are for when students might
12 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2017
struggle. Often parents don't engage with schools until there is a concern, and while that is certainly appropriate, it is not as proactive as making contact and connecting with the school before there is a problem.” In fact, Jane Bergeron, educational director with the Southeastern Regional Education Service Center, said conferences can offer insights for both parents and educators. After all, teachers often see a different version of a child when he or she is at school than a parent does at home, and vice versa. That means parents and teachers can both use the conference time as an
informative experience aimed at helping the child succeed, she said. There are many types of conferences, according to Todd DeMitchell, the John & H. Irene Peters Professor of Education at the University of New Hampshire. These include the semester open house – which is often a “meet and greet” introduction to the class expectations – to the planned conference to discuss the academic progress of the child. “Knowing the purpose for the meeting is important,” DeMitchell said. “It helps both parents and educators stay focused on the reason for meeting and how they can best share information and assist each other with the needs of the student.” “When both parties focus on the purpose of the meeting and don’t stray into other areas, more gets accomplished. I have found it helpful when both the educator and the parent help keep the conversation focused on the topic at hand. They can always set up another meeting to discuss a different topic.” DeMitchell recommends parents use the BE HEARD principles spelled out by the Harvard Family Research Project in its “Parent-Teacher Conference Tip Sheets for Principals, Teachers, and Parents” as their overarching guide. These principles are as follows: Best intentions assumed. Emphasis on learning. HomeSchool collaboration. Examples and evidence. Active listening. Respect for all. Dedication to follow-up. Bergeron said approaching a conference as a collaborative effort that keeps the child at the center of the conversation will go a long way to having a productive meeting. This frame of mind will also help parents and teachers discuss difficult topics and can help parents, who may be nervous about raising issues with teachers, assert their concerns. “Most of the time the conferences I have with parents are when there are concerns or parents need to give information that is necessary to help students at school,” Maynard said. “If a conference is called for a student concern, we focus on creating solutions and working on strategies for success.” Maynard said parents attending conferences should listen to what the teacher has to say, stay focused on the solution, and try to work toward a student’s strengths in the class.
Heading into the conference with a list of questions or topics to cover can be helpful for achieving this, Bergeron said. Among the items that should be on the list include course expectations, the educator’s teaching method, what can be done at home to support their student's success, what help there is for a struggling student and how best to reach the teacher if they have a concern. “It is important for parents to reach out to teachers because high school teachers have over 100 – often more – students, five to six classes, differing course levels to plan for, as well as several additional duties and responsibilities, not to mention thousands of grades over the course of the school year,” Maynard said. “A parent emailing if they have a concern is a much more proactive measure and a helpful way to build connections and support for student success.” This is also a good time to inform teachers about any issues or struggles happening at home that may be impeding the child’s work and asking the teacher, regardless of what is going on at home, how the child is doing socially, emotionally and as academically in school. When it comes to academics, DeMitchell points to experts who suggest asking for specifics about whether the child is performing at grade level, what performance test results mean, where the child needs improvement, what extra help or enrichment opportunities are available at school, and what can be done at home to help. Furthermore, if a parent comes to the meeting with concerns, it’s best to address them in a straightforward manner. Ask the teacher if he or she can fill in details of an event, incident or ongoing trouble in the classroom. For conferences that involve multiple educators, such as team-teaching situations, or special education meetings, DeMitchell said these meetings require particular attention to the organization of the meeting.
“These meetings can easily be viewed by parents as educators overwhelming them, not just with numbers but with their combined expert knowledge,” DeMitchell said. For that reason, DeMitchell said, in these situations it’s best that the educators clearly define the purpose of the meeting, gather the information to be presented, and give the parent time to ask questions and to process the information. “It is imperative that the educators be aware of how the parent is responding and whether the parent is engaged, so that they can adjust to make the parent comfortable, thus making the meeting more productive,” DeMitchell said. “The conference is a two-way conversation between parents and educators.” Finally, follow-up is very important, Bergeron said. Parents can, and should, send a followup email after the meeting highlighting the takeaways and action steps outlined during the meeting. This way, everyone knows what his or her next steps are, or, if there were any misconceptions from the meeting, they can be addressed right away, Bergeron said. This email can also serve as reference for both parents and teachers. Creating a great educational environment is as complex as it is critically important, DeMitchell said. “Both the parents and the educators have important knowledge of the child, which needs to be shared so that the best plans can be made and implemented. The formal conference, the informal meetings, and the sharing of communications are all important to building and maintaining a quality relationship. Children deserve no less from the adults in their lives.” Melanie Plenda is a full-time freelance journalist and mother living in Keene. How to
buy used
sports
equipment for your kids W
hen kids play a sport, they learn the value of dedication and teamwork. And when you’re a parent of a kid who plays a sport, chances are you will learn that sports equipment can be expensive.
Cleats, hockey skates, lacrosse sticks, tennis rackets, and more. What can you do to save on the cost of all the gear your kid needs? Here are five winning ways to skip the pricey sporting goods stores and score some quality used sports equipment. Facebook: Post a status update asking friends if they have any gently used sports equipment they would be willing to lend or sell. Be specific about your kid’s size and requirements in your requests to make it easier for friends to see if they have a match. If this direct approach doesn’t produce any viable leads, poke around other places on Facebook. In the search bar, look for online yard sale groups in your town or city. In most groups, you can browse offers and post “wanted” items. You can also look for buy/sell/trade pages and groups for your child’s particular sport (just be prepared to pay shipping if the seller is from afar). When buying used gear on Facebook, or anywhere, look for brands you trust or have used before, and check for any recalls on the item. One item you should not buy used – protective helmets. Because their safety features can be compromised through rough play, buy new. Other online sites: Ebay is crawling with offers for used sports equipment. Proceed with caution, however, and inquire about return policies and shipping costs before ordering. Also verify with the seller that the item listed is the actual item that will be shipped to you. Some sellers may post a product photo showing the item in its brand-new state when what will be delivered to your doorstep has seen better days. Always ask to see an actual photo of the equipment if a stock product photo is used in the listing. The same goes for buying items on Facebook.
On Craigslist, where little verification is required to sell something, be aware of scams and run away fast if you are asked to send a credit card number over email, or are asked for personal information. If the sale seems legitimate, use common sense and meet to buy the items in a public place. In Portsmouth, for example, the police station has volunteered to serve as a “safe sale zone” for Craigslist and other in-person sales from online sites. Ask if your local police station has a similar policy. Sporting goods consignment shop: In addition to finding great deals on used sports equipment, consignment shops give you the ability to sell your kid’s outgrown gear and deepen your savings. Ask about policies first: some consignment shops pay cash on the spot for used gear and others pay after the item has sold. One tip for buying at consignment shops is that the best deals usually come right after the sports season has started when some kids drop the sport and parents consign barely used equipment. Sports swap shop: Team organizers, including coaches, understand the burden that can come with keeping rapidly growing kids in the sports gear they need. For this reason, many teams often hold regular “swap shop” events for parents to buy and sell used equipment. If your child’s sport does not hold a swap shop, be the MVP parent who volunteers to set one up. Garage and yard sales: Remember the neighbors down the street with the three sons who all played hockey? The sons have grown up and the neighbors are having a yard sale. Get ready for a big bonanza if they are letting go of old sports gear. Prices tend to be lower at garage sales as owners want to offload as much as possible, and they may not know or care that the same used goalie padding is selling for $100 at the sports consignment shop down the road. And who knows, maybe you can score free hockey lessons the next time their sons come to visit. Jacqueline Tourville is a longtime contributor to Parenting New Hampshire.

ecreation and outdoor experiences are important for kids of all abilities. Play and outdoor exploration help kids develop physically and mentally, and make friends. But what if a child has a disability? How can he or she enjoy the summer camp experience? As certified recreation therapists, we help children with disabilities experience the outdoors through all types of adaptive activities and sports. New Hampshire’s summer camps can also offer outdoor experiences to kids with disabilities by assessing individual campers and incorporating adaptations to help them experience the joy of camp. Accommodations run the gamut from simple to complex. One size does not fit all, but can make outdoor activities accessible to everyone.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Accessibility is possible How can camps accommodate campers with disabilities? The first and most important step is to assess campers to determine what it will take to ensure they will be safe while participating and have the best possible experience. Camps should incorporate an assessment process to determine campers’ needs and abilities,
28 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2017
and appropriate accommodations needed for each camper. Is he or she verbal? Does he or she ambulate or use a wheelchair? Is he or she easily frustrated? What does the child – and his or her parents – want from the experience? Some parents may want their child to achieve the highest level of independence, while others will focus on participation. Some kids may want to learn a new skill, or may simply want to be a camper.
Fun in (and on) the water For water activities, it is important to know how comfortable a child is around the water, whether he can right himself from face-down to face-up, and whether he can close his mouth or hold his breath. For swimming, depending on the assessment, the child might need assistance getting in and out of the water, or may require a personal flotation device, which will keep his head above water and turn him face-up. The best accommodation for this is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type 1 PFD. A child who has cerebral palsy, for instance, may have limited range of motion and coordination in her extremities, which can make it difficult for her to swim safely and independently. For this camper, we would try a Danmar float, which will support her head and keep it above water, allow-
ing her to use her arms and legs to swim more independently and safely. She would still need supervision, but with fewer physical supports from counselors, she can experience the freedom of swimming on her own. For kayaking, seating and stability are important safety considerations. For example, a camper who is on the autism spectrum may have anxiety about the water and balance issues. We might choose to pair him with an experienced partner in a tandem kayak and adapt the kayak using special seating, foam blocks, and outriggers for stability. Other kayaking adaptations could include back and lateral supports, foot blocks and simple paddle adaptations. Once campers have the supports to help them feel safe, those who were nervous or who had difficulty supporting themselves physically often fall in love with the feeling of swimming, paddling and being in — and on — the water.
Take a hike! Hiking is a great way for campers to participate in camp activities and experience the outdoors. There is a wide array of adaptations to meet the abilities of each camper, while ensuring a safe and enjoyable hike. Campers with disabilities may require accommodations such as special wheelchair tires for traction,

trail riders, jogging strollers, push assistance, or for those who ambulate, perhaps a hiking buddy to provide guidance or a hand with balance and stability. Many camps have trails on-property or nearby, and New Hampshire has some accessible trails. Mud Pond Trail in Jefferson, the Lincoln Woods Trail off the Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln, and rail trail systems throughout the state are good locales for camp day hikes. The camp experience can help them engage in adventures they might not otherwise get to experience. Participating in outdoor activities is leveling for children with disabilities – it allows them to define themselves by their skill as ‘a swimmer’ or ‘a paddler.’ There are many experts and organizations in New Hampshire that can provide guidance and services to help children of all abilities participate in summer camp. Parents can learn the questions they should ask of camps, and camps can learn how to include campers with disabilities in their programs.

when choosing a camp By Claudia J. Soo Hoo, Executive Director, Merrimack Valley YMCA
W
hen we make decisions for our children, the first thing we think about is safety, especially when choosing our child’s resident summer camp. This is because we are entrusting others to have the same instincts we have when it comes to our children. We consider the child’s physical safety, as well as their emotional safety. We ask questions about safety precautions, emergency procedures and more. What else should we consider when we are selecting an overnight experience for our children? Below is a list of 10 things to keep in mind when making that all-important decision.
1.
Staff experience — Staff experience varies from camp to camp. Most camps have at least a week-long staff training prior to the campers arriving. Some camps have counselors who grew up going to resident camp, while
2.
others focus on hiring staff with a background in education. Think about what experiences and qualities are important to you and ask about the staff. Age — On average, overnight camps run from ages seven or eight to 15 or 16. We often get asked what age is the best age to send a child to overnight camp. The truth is there is no set age that works for every kid.
3. 4.
For some, seven might be that age, but for others, waiting until middle school is more appropriate. Only you, as parents, know when your child is emotionally ready for camp. Activities — One of the mostasked questions of camp directors is what a typical day looks like. Every camp has different activities and it is important to find one that interests your child. Facilities — Each camp has different facilities — from sleeping quarters to dining halls to activity areas. Some camps have basketball courts, ropes courses, and art centers. Some camps may feature tents and yurts, while others
5.
may have cabins with or without electricity. Facilities can be viewed on tours, as well as in pictures if tours are not feasible. Specialties — While every camp has unique aspects to it, there are also specialty camps for certain interests. There are football, basketball, and cheerleading camps. There are camps that are specifically geared for children with special needs, illnesses, or disabilities. Specialty camps are a perfect choice for those looking for something outside of the traditional camp experience.

Keeping Kids Healthy for Over 35 Years!
7. 8. 9. 10.
Food — I would not have put this on my top 10 list, until I had a child with a severe nut allergy. I believe that part of growing up is learning to manage a food allergy independently, so I do not feel as though I have to send my son to a nut-free camp. I do, however, want to know what the camp’s procedures are in handling food allergies. Many camps have the capacity to serve vegetarian, kosher, or gluten-free meals, and can also put you in contact with the camp nurses and the food service staff. Convenience — Are you looking for a camp that is local or are you willing to travel? Does the camp have pick-up options near your home? If my child has to take an airplane, is there a pick-up option? What are the drop-off and pick-up procedures? How long of an experience are you looking for and do you want an extended option? Price — Resident camps have a broad range in price depending on the type of camp (specialty, non-profit, for profit, association, independent, etc). Many camps also have a financial aid program that allows access for everyone regardless of ability to pay. Word of mouth — Ask your friends and families about where they send their children to camp. If you do not know anyone who attends camp, you can also inquire about programs that match new parents with returning parents. Level of comfort — The most important thing when sending your child away to camp is that you are comfortable with the camp itself. How many times have you received the advice “go with your gut” when raising your children? Choosing a resident summer camp is no different. If you are comfortable, your child will be comfortable, increasing the likelihood of a successful experience. This article was first published in the March 2016 issue of Parenting New Hampshire. Take the first steps toward
changing your
career T
he industry you are working in may not be doing well; raising children may have taken you away from your career and now you want to jump back into the workforce; or maybe you are just no longer satisfied with the work you do.
There are many reasons people change careers and there are reasons why you shouldn’t, but either way, the first step is to look inward. Career counselors advise anyone looking to move to another industry take some time to self-assess. John Scuto, owner of Career and Academic Planning Services in Brentwood, has helped people of all ages and skills decide what direction to go in when seeking a new career. Often clients tell him they are not sure what they should be doing for a job. He helps them look at their skills, values, personality type and what they like to do for pleasure, then speaks with them about what kind of work might be for them. “You need to know yourself before going forward,” Scuto said. Sometimes people find they don’t actually need to change careers; they realize they just don’t like the company they work for or their boss, Scuto said. Once they evaluate themselves, they see they don’t need to switch careers — they need to move on to another company.
Some clients find they want to stay in the job they have but add other types of work to their portfolio. Some are not fit to have just one job, Scuto said. He happens to be one of them. He not only runs his career counseling service, but is also a personal trainer and a justice of the peace. He calls his work a "composite career.” “Think about what you like to do when no one else is telling you what to do,” Scuto said. “Do any of these things translate into a career? Many times they do.” William Ryan of Ryan Career Services in Concord also helps those struggling with what direction to head in. He uses self-assessment tools to help clients and likes to remind them, “You are not making a decision on what you are going to do the rest of your life…. We are going to identify a landing spot for now.” People changing careers or entering the workforce should no longer look at a job as a lifelong commitment. Young people especially, Ryan said,
family resource book 2017 www.parentingnh.com 41

By Andrea Bushee
PROFESSIONAL SERVICES & RETAIL SALES
should expect to have several career shifts throughout their lives. He said he is not suggesting people switch jobs constantly or go back to school on a whim without doing research or a cost analysis, but “school and retraining are normal part of life now,” he said. “Skills will need to be retooled and kept up to date and I would expect that is probably going to increase,” Ryan added. Someone looking to change careers also needs to assess themselves within the context of globalization and automation. Ryan warns any job that is overly “routine” could be at risk. Fields he said are marketable in New Hampshire right now include professional services, hospitality, maintenance, accounting, human resources, health care and technology. Once a career path has been chosen, networking should be a priority and can be done online through websites like LinkedIn, which includes groups of New Hampshire-based professionals such as 603 Networking. And networking does not just happen in a professional setting. It also involves reaching out and speaking with people you meet anywhere – the gym, a parenting group or church are all places to network, Ryan said. Networkers should be ready to reciprocate when it comes to helping each other find new opportuni-
ties, Ryan added. Another important step in changing careers is to create or add to your resume and LinkedIn profile. Ryan suggests a “keyword rich” resume that can communicate one's value and make it through tracking systems that filter resumes. There should be a consistent keyword match between the job application and the resume, Ryan said. Looking at the wording in job descriptions can help applicants find the types of keywords employers are looking for. Knowing yourself and self-promotion are important in interviews. Even if you have been out of the workforce for a while, that may not be a bad thing. “It has to be transparent and is not necessarily a liability these days,” Ryan said about parents who have been home with kids for several years. “If you have been raising kids but have kept up to date with, say, Microsoft Office, you can show you can multitask and you can keep current.” Ryan also suggests job seekers use examples of skills or interests they have gained outside of work, in a hobby or school setting, and use those to their advantage in becoming employed, whether within the same industry or in a new one. Andrea Bushee is a freelance writer and mom to three kids in Pembroke.

For six years, our Family Favorites mascot has wandered the fields anonymously, but thanks to Charlotte of Londonderry, the beautiful bovine finally has a name. Charlotte, pictured here with her mom, Katie, submitted the name Carli, the overwhelming choice of our online voters. Congratulations also to finalists Oliver of Raymond, Angelina of New Boston, Isaac of Bedford and Emily of Nashua, and thank you to all who voted this summer in both our mascot naming and Family Favorites contests. –
