Selling spirits through the seasons
Community-centered grocery store serves variety of customers
In the heart of the Northeast Kingdom, you’ll find the small community of Island Pond. In the late 1800s, it was a mid-point on the Grand Trunk Railway connecting Portland, Maine, and Gorham, NH, to Sherbrooke and Montreal in Quebec.
Though passenger rail stopped operating in town decades ago, Island Pond continues to attract visitors.
For Maria and Ryan Perry, owners of Kingdom Market in Island Pond, understanding the seasonal shifts in their clients is key to their success as an 802Spirits agency store and grocery.
STOCKING FOR THE SEASON
“There are hunters, hikers, lake-goers. There's stuff to do,” says Ryan Perry. “It's definitely recreational.”
Summer sees the return of part-time lake house residents as well as campers staying at
the nearby Brighton State Park and a privately owned campground.
“During the summer, we sell a lot of your ready-to-drink (spirits),” Maria Perry says. “Vodkas are really popular, and gin is really popular. Tequila, of course, because everyone loves a frozen margarita.”
Come fall, it’s hunting season.
“It’s a whole different crowd of people,” Maria Perry says. “It’s all about the whiskeys.”
Then, once the snowpack is set, Island Pond hums with snowmobilers.
“It really depends on the season,” she says. “And our Vermont section is pretty popular.”
But even keeping in mind the seasonal shifts, they don't forget their regular shoppers.
“Even though the seasonal people keep us going, the local people are the heart of the community, which is nice," Maria Perry says. “We have a lot of locals. We have regular people that come in all the time that everybody knows.”
Ryan Perry is usually the one testing the new products.
“He tends to be a whiskey drinker,” she says, “so every time a new bottle comes in, he’s like ‘Oh that looks good.’ “
STORE HISTORY
Located just across the street from Island Pond’s railway station, Kingdom Market is at the crossroads of Routes 114 and 105. It’s at the heart of the small village of about 800 full-time residents.
The store was built by JP and Jocelyn Gervais in the 1980s. But Maria and Ryan Perry became acquainted with it later while it was operating as John’s Market by John and Linda Gariepy. Ryan Perry worked for the Gariepys for a time. Maria Perry was working at a nearby bank in Island Pond. The couple lives in nearby Brownington.
When the Gariepys sold the grocery store to new owners, Ryan and Maria took jobs elsewhere. Over the next five years, though, they kept thinking about the store, town and community of Island Pond. They imagined what it might be like to operate their own store.
“We looked for about three years,” Maria Perry says. “We had looked at several properties, and they didn't work out for a variety of reasons. And one night, we were just sitting around, we were like, ‘You know, it'd be really nice if John's Market would go up for sale.’ I happened to do a little bit of Google research, and it
popped up. It was actually for sale.”
The Perrys took over Kingdom Market in July 2019.
“It was nice to be back in the town,” Maria Perry says. “We knew a lot of the townspeople.”
THE LATEST CHAPTER
In addition to being a grocery and 802Spirits agency store, at one point, a pharmacy operated out of the building. One of the first things they did upon ownership was to reclaim the unused pharmacy space for an upgraded 802Spirits section.
“That was one of our biggest goals when we took the store over, is that we wanted to put the liquor store back into the space that it used to occupy, open it up a lot and add some more character,” Maria Perry says. “We actually were able to considerably increase the number of bottles that we have. We added right off; we added like 40 different kinds of liquor. Then we've slowly been adding some additional stuff to the liquor store to expand it and just to try to keep it fresh.”
Kingdom Market hired a new manager, Kim Dodge, this past fall. Her background is in the
restaurant industry, not groceries.
“This is kind of new for her, but it seems to be working out fairly well,” Maria Perry says. “She definitely has a good rapport with a lot of our licensees. It’s nice that she has a different perspective.”
The Perrys see her experience as a bartender as useful, particularly in the 802Spirits department.
“I’m pretty good about recommending things,” says Maria Perry. “But because I don’t mix drinks myself, it’s more difficult. She’s been super helpful because she can aid in that portion of it if somebody has specific questions about what to mix with certain liquors.”
Beyond spirits, the grocery deli sells an array of homemade salads, and the hot food section attracts a lot of daily customers.
“We have hot food all day long. We have breakfast sandwiches in the morning, and we usually do a different hot lunch every day, plus we have burgers and that kind of thing,” Maria Perry says. “We get a lot of local people that come in for that stuff. The road crews, they’re always in the store for those things.”
The meat counter is also something they’ve
tried to improve upon, especially with Ryan’s meat-cutting background.
“We pride ourselves on that,” Maria Perry says. “We keep our prices at least reasonable in that area, and we offer a very good product. Most people are really happy with that.”
If you’re passing by Island Pond and are looking for a steak and spirit to pair with it, you can visit Kingdom Market on Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We’re sort of one of those weird little stores,” Maria Perry says. “We’re sort of an all-around, one-stop shop kind of place. We do our best to at least offer a little bit of a lot of things.”
