— the definitive guide to the Greater Nashua region. Known as the “Gate City,” Nashua is New Hampshire’s second-largest city, celebrated for its rich history, cultural diversity, and numerous economic and educational opportunities.
Twice recognized by Money magazine as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the United States, Nashua offers an impressive array of tax-free shopping, award-winning restaurants, picturesque parks, historic landmarks, a lively downtown and a robust business community. The Greater Nashua region features a diverse range of housing options, outdoor activities, exceptional schools, cutting-edge health care facilities, and six universities and colleges.
The business sector in Greater Nashua is a cornerstone of the state’s economy. From major companies like BAE Systems, Fidelity Investments and Oracle to startups and nonprofit organizations, Nashua businesses are driving economic growth and creating thousands of high-paying jobs across various sectors.
Nashua enjoys an ideal location in New England, easily accessible via airports, major highways and future commuter rail plans. Just an hour away from stunning beaches, excellent hiking and skiing and the Lakes Region, it also offers close proximity to Boston for major sports, theater and other urban attractions.
The downtown area of Greater Nashua is a destination in its own right. Historic mill buildings have been beautifully renovated to house businesses, artists and riverfront residences. Situated on historic Main Street, downtown Nashua features an extraordinary blend of fine dining, upscale bars and craft breweries, unique shops, rich architecture, vibrant art scenes, frequent events and a scenic riverfront.
For art enthusiasts, Nashua is a hub of creativity, music and culture. It hosts the only
annual International Sculpture Symposium in the U.S. and features numerous annual art events, concerts, galleries and acclaimed performances by local theater groups. Symphony New Hampshire also calls Nashua home.
A noteworthy addition to the Nashua arts scene is the new $25 million Nashua Center for the Arts, which opened in 2023. This venue, accommodating 750 to 1,000 attendees, is centrally located and showcases nationally touring musicians, live comedy, theater, musicals, children’s performances and more. It also serves as a premier location for corporate and family events.
If you’re seeking an international flavor, Nashua stands out as one of New Hampshire’s most diverse cities, known for its welcoming atmosphere and celebration of cultural diversity. This has led to a vibrant international dining scene, unique shops and numerous community-wide multicultural events throughout the year.
Lastly, Nashua is a forward-thinking city with an eye on the future. We encourage you to explore “Imagine Nashua,” the city’s master plan that outlines an innovative vision for Nashua’s future. For more information, visit imagine.nashuanh.gov/about.

Future-proof the economy with GREATER NASHUA LEADERSHIP
BY PAUL HEBERT, CLASS OF 1995
The business community in Nashua was at the forefront of the communi ty’s response to two of the most significant crises in the community’s history: the Crown Hill Fire in 1930 and the reinvigoration of the local economy after the textile mills closed in 1948. In both cases, the economic future of the community was in peril, and the business leaders of the day came together quickly to lead the commu nity’s responses and avert economic disaster.
In the early 1990s, the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors determined that it was in the community’s best interest to ensure that future generations of leaders would be well equipped to respond to significant challenges that the city would inevitably face. Out of those discussions, Leadership Greater Nashua (LGN) was formed with the dual purpose of educating rising leaders about existing resources, institutions and systems in the community and giving
rising leaders a shared experience that would foster and encourage collaboration.
The Chamber runs this program annually and invites interested members to apply for the 2025-26 cohort. As a Chamber, we make a significant investment in those who are accepted into LGN. We coordinate a nine-month-long
educational series with the local business, government and nonprofit sectors that will educate you about the inner workings of local institutions and help you understand community strengths and weaknesses. In turn, we require that everyone who is accepted into the program provide a return on our investment in the form of a class legacy project, something that provides a tangible benefit to the community and serves as a trial run for the participants in self-organization to solve a problem that they identify. N
Are you ready to take your seat at the table? Call the Chamber for additional details and to apply for the class.
“GNYP has provided me with invaluable connections to my community. I’ve not only made some amazing business partnerships but have also made some great friends. There’s always that excitement to go to events because they are truly fun, professional and educational.”
— Dina A., 34, Entrepreneur
“The Nashua Young Professionals is a great program that allows for active engagement with professionals in all types of industries. It’s been an amazing way to build my professional network, connections and friendships”
— Joseph P., 36, Relations Manager in business banking
GREATER YOUNG NASHUA PROFESSIONALS
The GNYP is an initiative of the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce established in 2007 with a mission to connect young professionals with each other, the community, professional opportunities and civic engagement in the Greater Nashua area. Whether you are young in age, young in spirit, new to the area or new to your position, the Greater Nashua Young Professionals invites you to create new connections — both professional and personal — with us.
“Young professionals has allowed me to build more community in Nashua both personally and professionally. Moving to a new community as an adult can be challenging, but the young professionals’ network makes it a lot easier.”
— Tara L., 29, Director of Development at a nonprofit
“When I moved back to the Nashua area 10 years ago, I was invited by a friend to attend GNYP (then Iugo), and though I was hesitant, I went and I’m so glad. I still cannot believe the connections I made in business and friendship. Ten years later, I am in a completely different career and still attending these events. The young professionals I met through this organization supported me in my business and then during my career change. Now, many are leaders in their fields and encourage their staff to attend. If you’re looking for a great way to meet people and build long-lasting connections, I cannot recommend GNYP enough.”
— Alyssa O., 39, Programs Manager for a nonprofit
“The Young Professionals group offers a space where anyone can be themselves while feeling supported and building meaningful connections. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with everyone genuinely committed to helping each other succeed.”
— Leidy B, Director of Development for a nonprofit
“I have found the YP group to be informative, like the guest speaker series on public speaking and making a name for yourself, or the first-time homebuyers seminar. It has been interactive and fun; a great way to meet other young professionals in a not-your-typical networking setting.”
— Michelle W., 43, Assessing Manager, City of Nashua
“I was nervous to attend these meetings at first, but I immediately felt welcomed. I’ve been able to network and make friends with so many new people! Now as the co-chair of the group, I try to ensure all our new members feel welcomed in too.”
Sam B., 25, Executive Director for a nonprofit

Symphony NH makes its home base in Nashua, though you can also see it elsewhere in the state. The 2024-25 season is conductor Roger Kalia’s final leading the company after joining in 2018. The spring lineup includes Serenade of the Winds on March 8 at Nashua Community College and It’s All Overtures on April 19 at the Nashua Center for the Arts.
START YOUR DAY RIGHT
What better way to start your morning in Greater Nashua than with some freshly brewed coffee and a specialty pastry? Fortunately, there are plenty of options for you to choose from including Coffee & Kindness and Buckley’s Cafe and Bakery. Can’t make up your mind? Many offer sandwiches and salads, so you can come back for lunch, too.
SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP

Take advantage of New Hampshire’s tax-free shopping for a bit of retail therapy with options for everyone.
MAKE A SPLASH
When you think of New Hampshire’s second-largest city, a serene kayak (or canoe) trek may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But there are multiple locations you can launch your watercraft to explore. A boat ramp at Greeley Park in Nashua will get you out on the Merrimack River not far from the head of the Nashua River, or you can put in at Mine Falls below the Nashua Canal Reservoir. The Nashua Area Kayak Exploration Destinations (NAKED) group often organizes City of Lights parades, paddling in view of the Main Street Bridge in boats festooned with lights.
TEST YOUR LUCK
There are now more ways to get a date with Lady Luck. The Nash Casino at the Pheasant Lane Mall opens the largest state-of-the-art gaming venue in the state. It is a two-story sports entertainment complex with assorted non-gambling games, a variety of table games and historic horse racing machines. It also has a fine dining steakhouse, plus casual and grab-n-go options, and two full bars. Also, the recently expanded Gate City Casino offers more than 500 historic horse racing gaming machines, table games and a 20-table poker room.

With options like Axe Play and Axel’s Throw House, you can have an unforgettable experience while getting rid of your angst.
TIME CAPSULE
The Nashua Historical Society protects and preserves materials on the city’s history at the neighboring Florence Speare Memorial Museum and the Abbot-Spalding House Museum. The museum contains a wealth of information regarding Nashua’s origin through thousands of artifacts and photos, from its evolution into a mill town in the 1800s to its present as a manufacturing and technology center. Rotating exhibits explore topics including “What are you Wearing: Dressing from Skin to Skirt in the 1830s.”

There you’ll find the Nashua Silver Knights, a summer, wood-bat baseball team competing in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England. BUSINESS
BY SARAH PEARSON
Superior service has customers supporting FOR GENERATIONS BUSINESSES
The Greater Nashua community has several companies that have been icons in the regional economy, not just for decades but for more than a century each. While each business journey has had its unique inspiration, challenges and successes, these Nashua businesses have grown from dedicated customers, access to regional benefits and a supportive business community.
LAW FAMILY COMPANIES
Law Family Companies have seen a lot of change since its founding in 1882. For starters, the branch that is now Law Motor Freight originally had no motors involved. It began with a horse and wagon making trips to the railway depot to deliver travelers’ steamer trunks and goods downtown.
“My great-great-grandfather wanted nothing to do with going from the horse and buggy age to the motorized age, because ‘these newfangled motorized vehicles were not as reliable as his horse and buggy’ teams,” says Brian Law, President and CEO. “That’s our humble beginnings.”
One thing that has stayed the same is leadership from the Law family and its deep roots in the Nashua community. Brian Law is among those in the fifth generation to helm the business. His son and daughter, plus seven others, make up the sixth generation of
the Law Family Assembly.
Today, Law Family Companies is comprised of Law Motor Freight, Law Warehouses, BSP Trans Inc., and Able Moving and Storage.
“We’ve really evolved as the times have evolved,” Law says.
Despite founder George Law’s concern about motorized vehicles, he owned six trucks by 1929.
By the 1950s, the company expanded into real estate, purchasing property for truck terminals and warehousing. It has several locations across Vermont, Maine
and southern New Hampshire.
“BSP Trans, which was started by my father in 1970, started out to meet a furniture delivery need,” Law says. “But with the deregulation of trucking in 1980, it evolved to handle air freight out of Logan Airport.”
Nashua’s location as a hub of southern New Hampshire commerce has fueled the Law Family Companies’ longevity, with access to railways, major interstates and proximity to Logan Airport in Boston and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
“A lot of people don’t realize how valuable Nashua is from a geographic standpoint,” Law says. “Nashua is a very centrally located service point to be able to service all New England. The railroad comes up into Nashua and having multiple branches out of Nashua, we’re able to service points all the way down to Connecticut and Rhode Island and all the way up into Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.”
“For trucking companies that are trying to bring goods from, say, Pennsylvania
and New Jersey, this is the point that they can service in a single day and then turn around and then service Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont from here.”
Law also credited the Greater Nashua community who make up the staff and patrons of the business.

says. “We’ve even had people meet here and get married. I think about our employee base as being one of the biggest ways the community supported us.”
Law noted that the services they offer are things their customers could do on their own, but since the company has
a long history of expertise, clients know they’re better off outsourcing.
“We’re successful because our customers realize that they are better off if they have us provide that service for them or provide that resource for them,” Law says. “In order for us to be successful, we have to do it better than they would do it themselves, and that’s really our mission every day.”
FORTIN GAGE
For over 100 years, Fortin Gage Florist has maintained the same downtown storefront on West Pearl Street.
The store witnessed Nashua’s shift from textile manufacturing to become a hub of retail, innovation and education, steadfastly weathering economic ups and downs.
The store was founded as Fortin the Florist by Charles Fortin in 1931. In the 1960s, Edward Gage Jr. bought the business after working with Charles for a few years. He was also a part-time florist for the White House flower shop.
Ed’s son, Jody, was the next chapter in the store’s history. Jody Gage says that he’d worked at the store during high school and over breaks from college, and for some years after college, but also spent seven to eight years away doing different things. As Ed approached retirement, Jody came back more fully. Ed handed the business to Jody in 2000.
Then, three years ago, a day after interviewing for a part-time role, Amber Morgan presented an offer to buy the business. Jody countered with a threeyear trial first. Morgan asked for a year.
“We have an incredibly talented team that’s dedicated to perfection.”
— Amber Morgan, Owner, Fortin Gage
Ultimately, she worked 18 months under Jody’s ownership before buying the business.
Morgan credits the store’s longevity to the expertise of its staff and commitment to the community.
“We have an incredibly talented team that’s dedicated to perfection,” Morgan says.
Her background was in business operations and logistics, and she worked for Excell Mobile until the company relocated to New Jersey. Amber didn’t want to leave her hometown.
Aside from a high school floral course, she didn’t have much experience in floristry, but she did have a goal to own a downtown business.
“To me, they are the absolute pillars of the community,” Morgan says.
She expressed gratitude for the ongoing patronage of generations of customers.
“We get to be a part of peoples’ lives in really intimate ways,” she says. Flowers are bought for births, proms, weddings, anniversaries and deaths.
The store has been voted best flower shop by readers of the Nashua Telegraph more than a dozen times.
“Each time they place an order, they’re supporting us,” Morgan says. “The business would not still be here if the city didn’t keep choosing us.”
In turn, the store looks to support the community. She says they contribute to some 20 nonprofits each year.
It also participates in the national Petal it Forward event, partnering with sponsors to distribute 300 free bouquets to passersby in downtown.
“It’s one of the best days of the year for us,” Morgan says.
Fortin Gage Florist is now looking toward the future. The store will be adding a repotting station for those who don’t have the space to store their own 50-pound bag of potting soil and make a mess in the dirt. Plans are in the works for the store to lead classes, facilitate plant exchanges and host outside programs. Since she took ownership, the front retail portion of the store has been revamped with botanical-inspired gifts, and she’s added a build-your-own bouquet bar.
“Every person who has made a bouquet has left with an ear-to-ear smile,” Morgan says.
WH BAGSHAW
WH Bagshaw’s company history is closely tied to the region’s industrial history. Walter H. Bagshaw, an immigrant and factory worker from England, founded the company in 1870 in Lowell, Massachusetts. The company made industrial fabric combing pins for the many textile machines in the mill hub of the Merrimack Valley.
WH Bagshaw relocated to Nashua in 1949. It’s now run by the fifth generation of the family, President Aaron Bagshaw and Vice-President Adria Bagshaw. Their chil-
dren are still students but have part-time jobs working for the company, too.
“We maintained the same type of manufacturing we were doing in 1870 through early last year,” says Adria Bagshaw. “We started doing CNC precision machining in 2005, so we’re almost 20 years into that.”
Over the generations, WH Bagshaw diversified from textile pins into phonograph needles and hinge parts. Today, it uses computer numerical control (CNC) machining to make pins for multiple applications. They produce the small but critical components for applications in aerospace, medical and other essential industries.
Most recently, they added the Walter Bat Company, which produces professional and semi-professional bats with wood sourced in northern New England.
“It’s still considered CNC machining. But of course, we’re using wood instead of metal, and where one rod stock of metal would make dozens of parts, we’re loading one billet to make one bat,” Bagshaw says. “So, the process is definitely different, but
the foundation of programming a machine and loading your raw material is the same. It’s been a nice addition to what we do.”
They currently operate out of a 100,000-square-foot former mill building on Pine Street, which increasingly has been a stopping point
for political candidates from Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess to Jeanne Shaheen and Annie Kuster to presidential hopefuls Michael Bloomberg and Hillary Clinton. While the building may be old, the
BUSINESS
company is operating with modern tools and processes.
“The work opportunities are great,” Bagshaw says. “People assume that we’re still this old-school manufacturing; they might envision work that previously was done in an old mill building like ours, but we have state-of-the-art equipment here. We have really exciting careers, and what I’m most proud about is that, even though we have world-class quality and great products, we really have a tight-knit family environment.”
The company has been lauded for its efforts to support employees and the Greater Nashua community. Bagshaw highlighted those connections, particularly as they operated through the pandemic. Then, the company regularly provided meals to workers, with an emphasis on buying those lunches from smaller, locally owned restaurants such as Crosby’s and Jajabelles.
“We pride ourselves on being responsible employers,” Bagshaw says. “One important thing we do is being a recovery-friendly workplace, and not only do we take pride in that, but we are always sharing how that’s worked for us and getting the word out that it’s a good thing to do as an employer.”
The company is still expanding and evolving, and its current home may not be able to support that growth.
“I would not be surprised to see us in a new location in Nashua in the next decade,” Bagshaw says. “We are a manufacturing company working on two floors. You know, our building is beautiful and has so much character and charm, but it’s also tricky working around all of the beams because of the construction of the old mill building.”
Nashua has served, and continues to serve, as a place of growth for WH Bagshaw.
“This year, in fact, marked 75 years at Nashua,” Bagshaw says. “Our Nashua roots are really important to us.” N

ARTS
BY SARAH PEARSON
ACCESSIBLE ARTS
Creativity abounds in Nashua. Over the recent decades, community investments have spurred a wealth of scenic and artistic opportunities, concentrated downtown but available throughout the region.
While you can certainly visit one of the city’s several galleries, much of this new investment in art is visible outdoors, where anyone can see it at any time. Arts organizations like the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium and Positive Street Art are working with the city and business community to make downtown and the wider city a destination for arts and culture.
CONNECTION TO CULTURE
With a vision that began about 50 years ago, Nashua is nearing the competition of the first phase of its Riverwalk loop that will connect both sides of the riverbank to downtown areas, like the library, Bicentennial Park and Renaissance Park, among others.
“The Riverwalk has existed, but what we’re doing is making it a loop,” says Liz Hannum, Director of Economic Development for the City of Nashua. “We’re getting a new park and a new entertainment area, and then we’ll have the boardwalk that will go all the way down.”
In addition to including visual art pieces, public performance art spaces are also included in Riverwalk plans. “Art has been really important,” Hammun says. “Arts are the whimsical, fun, interesting ideas that make people excited to be in places. That’s really the place-making aspect of this.”
Existing art pieces, plus future works, are a critical aspect of making the Riverwalk a destination.
Making the in Nashua
“We have tons of parks, but parks are just grass until you add excitement and intrigue. The art is going to do that for the Riverwalk. It will come back both with performing and visual arts. And then hopefully we’ll have food truck festivals in that area, and keep it active year-round, so that we can see that activity grow.”
Greeley Park Bandshell has had a summer concert series organized through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. The performance venues that are part of the Riverwalk will open up additional opportunities for shows in the heart of downtown.
“Renaissance Park will have a big kind of grassy area, and it will have a kind of patio with a pavilion on it,” Hammun says. “Then the statue that’s there will stay as well. So, we’ll still have the Mill Girl with her child kind of overlooking the whole thing.”
OUTDOOR MUSEUM
Throughout the Riverwalk are locations where the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium has installed art pieces. The organization has facilitated the creation of

about 50 sculptures since its founding in 2008. About two dozen are in the downtown area with many of the rest stretching from there down the river to Mine Falls Park.
The artists have national and global backgrounds, but the creation of the sculptures is a community process with locals hosting artists in their homes, and providing meals and transportation.
The 2025 symposium will be held May 8 to 31.
In the last dozen years, Positive Street Art also has been among those contributing to the art scene of downtown Nashua. While the count of their murals is always in
flux, they have facilitated the painting of many urban-style, large-scale art pieces in Nashua.
“The reason we even started Positive Street Art was because urban art wasn’t well represented in the arts landscape here in Nashua and surrounding areas,” says Cecilia Ulibarri, Executive Director and Co-founder of Positive Street Art. “We had pitched an idea, originally to do some temporary walls that would rotate out with different art to this organization called Visualize Nashua at the time.”
The idea was well received, but planners didn’t want just temporary art; they wanted something permanent. Positive
Street Art now has about two dozen pieces in Nashua alone, like “Nostalgia” by Chris Boncoddo, which pays homage to the Chase Building’s cinematic history, and the Rotary 4 Pillar mural by Manny Ramirez on Bowers Street.
“One of my favorites — and they all are my favorite in one way, shape or form — but I think my favorite ones in Nashua specifically are the ones at the Police Athletic League, and it’s two young children of color that are shown in a superhero light,” Ulibarri says. “And one of them, the little girl underneath her, there’s a quote that says, ‘You can change the world,’ and it’s just a visual reminder when, especially kids that go there every day, that they can also be the superhero in their story or in their life, whereas maybe they are not empowered otherwise.”
Since its founding, Positive Street Art has grown to offer visual and dance art programs for children, opened a gallery space, and brought new murals to walls in Nashua and across New England. They also host and attend community events to get more people involved in the arts.
“One of the other things that we’re known for is called the Downtown Arts Fest. It was basically all of the things that we do in one event: so dance, music, art,

there were food trucks and things like that,” Ulibarri says. “So it’s a place for the community to come together and just celebrate the arts, but in a more cohesive manner. We’ve had live art battles during those events as well. This year, we partnered with the City of Nashua to do the first Nashua Summer Stroll. So we were able to do what we normally did at the Downtown Arts Fest, and pull it into that event, which brought probably close to 4,000 people throughout the day.”
Positive Street Art’s efforts have also inspired the community to be more mindful of public spaces.
“I think that there’s a respect that comes with our work, where our murals have rarely been defaced,” Ulibarri says. “So in that sense, where a wall is blank, could have had tags on it or something, but now it has beautiful art on it that anybody can enjoy.”
The variety of groups working to bring art to the city creates a more well-rounded art experience for viewers.
“People get a more wholesome experience, versus just sculptures or just murals,” Ulibarri says. “You have a little bit of the 3D versus the 2D and I think that that’s really unique, because, again public art is accessi-
ble to all. It’s unique that we have the sculpture symposium to really add to that kind of outdoor museum type of atmosphere, where people can enjoy all types of art.”
CREATIVITY ECONOMY
Access to public art improves community identity and pride, stimulates economic growth, encourages social interaction, and promotes creativity and innovation.
While Nashua has art galleries, including a branch of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, and the new Center for the Arts performance venue, public art is a low-barrier way to get people interested in the creative process and downtown revitalization.
Visitors checking out the art may be more inclined to patronize local retailers or stop by downtown restaurants.
“The goal is to get people out and using the riverfront, kind of reclaiming it from the mills,” Hammun says. “This is not just a pretty space that we’re building. We’re hoping that it’s going to help build businesses around it. I think that the activity that it will bring to develop businesses around there is really going to be the most important aspect of it.” N
ARTS
BRIGHTENING NASHUA’S NIGHTLIFE
In the heart of downtown, the Nashua Center for the Arts is closing out its first full year of shows since opening in 2023. The modern theater has seating for up to 750 guests, but retractable risers increase the standing capacity to 1,000.
The NCA has quickly become one of Southern New Hampshire’s go-to venues for live entertainment. It hosts sold-out performances from local and nationally touring acts including Lonestar, Symphony NH, Jimmy Dunn, and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
Spectacle Live coordinates the line-up of music, live comedy, theater and children’s performances, with most weeks having multiple nights of show options.
Pete Lally, head of Spectacle Live, said the center was drawing from a wider geography than he would expect after only six months. About two-thirds of ticket purchases are from people who live outside Nashua, he said in November 2023.
Visitors coming to the shows get the chance to sample Nashua’s lodging, dining and retail establishments.
Artists, too, have praised the venue’s modern amenities, including a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system.
Nashua’s University Just Keeps Growing
EDUCATION
BY SARAH PEARSON
BUILDING BRIDGES between college and civic communities
Nashua has had at least one college in the city for nearly a century. Today, it is home to Rivier University and Nashua Community College, with several other post-secondary institutions in the nearby region.
While there has always been a connection between the college and civic community, there’s a recent effort to foster those ties and build on the qualities that make Nashua a great college town.
“You know it when you’re amongst the presence of a college town,” says Jonathan Harper, Athletic Director at Rivier University. “When you arrive on campus, there’s a vibrancy that spills over from campus into town. It’s that fresh set of excitement, especially at the beginning of the new year; that’s what reminds me of a college town.”
For Barry Garside, Vice President of Student and Community Affairs at Nashua Community College, a college town is a
place where if you say the name of the city, the college is an immediate association.
“That Nashua Community College would be almost on the tip of everyone’s tongue,” Garside says. “And I think that’s what a college town should be, and it’s what a community college should aspire to be.”
College towns can be small towns or major metros, but they tend to share qualities of having off-campus entertainment for students, academic partnerships with local businesses and community support for the college’s sports teams.
SOCIAL SCENE
Rivier University is near Nashua’s downtown, making it accessible to students, even those without a vehicle, either by walking, biking or taking the city bus. Nashua Community College is located close to the city’s border with Merrimack and farther from downtown, but it is still close to recreational opportunities, retail and off-campus dining. It is also on public transportation routes.
“Nashua is a perfect opportunity to be a college town because of its size and
because there is a central downtown location that many small colleges in New England don’t have,” Harper says. “This is a vibrant community that’s growing and it’s diverse. So, when you have the opportunity for the number of restaurants, the places that students enjoy going to, the shops and even simply just walking downtown in a safe area, that is what really lends Nashua to being that vibrant college town.”
For students looking to hang out around town, Nashua offers plenty of cafes to grab a coffee and chip away on homework and bars to meet up with friends.
Entertainment options range from activities like escape rooms and ax throwing to art galleries and stage performances.
The city benefits from the students as well, providing a fresh batch of customers each academic year.
“I think the injection of students into the economy every early September, where our students come back on campus” is a benefit, Harper says. “They certainly enjoy going to the restaurants, fast food. ... It helps to invigorate the community, and I think the interactions are fun. I live in
Nashua, and I can certainly tell when the students are back. It just provides a certain level of energy in town that disappears a little bit during the summer.”
Nashua as a city is positioned well in New England for students to access an even wider variety of opportunities.
“I think the location is great: close to Boston, close to the coast, close to the mountains,” says Robyn Griswold, Vice President of Academic Affairs of Nashua Community College. “It’s a great space. Lots of the arts, the performing arts center now downtown, great restaurants, great social scene, our parks, outdoor activities. I think it’s a great location.”
These features combine to create a city where college students want to be, beyond the academic accolades of the college alone.
“For the university as a whole, (the mission) is to provide the best student experience possible. When you have the opportunity for your location to be in a vibrant city like Nashua, it provides students, and student-athletes more specifically, the opportunity to spend time in constructive ways,” Harper says.
“They don’t become bored. When students become bored or disillusioned, then they start looking at transferring,” he says. “And what we’re seeing is more students looking to transfer to Rivier because of the overall experience that we provide here.”
SCHOOL-TO-CAREER PIPELINE
That variety of opportunities carries over from entertainment to future employment. Nashua’s major industries include technology, advanced manufacturing, health care and defense.
“Sometimes people have to move because they have a certain career that they’ve selected, and they have to move because that career ... just doesn’t exist where they live,” Garside says.
That’s not the case in Nashua. “If you want to go into health care, there’s a million jobs; or education; or if you’re repairing cars; or if you want to go into business; on and on,” he adds. “So for those purposes, I think Nashua makes a great setting for students to get their training at a college like Nashua Community College, and then work in the surrounding area.”
With its strong economic base, Nashua has part-time work, internships and co-ops available for students who are looking for those experiences.
“As an example, I was just speaking with our aviation technology department chair, and he was mentioning how his freshman class, the students, are going to be working in internships with partners over at the Nashua airport,” Griswold says. “Many of our academic programs have internship components. Work-based learning is a very important part of our academic programming.”
“We have many, many community partnerships. In fact, I think that’s what really makes Nashua Community College special,” Garside adds. “We have a precision manufacturing boot camp, which is where students come in and they make mechanical parts that are used primarily in submarines, believe it or not. This boot camp is supported by the U.S. Navy, something we only started about a year ago, but we already have 40 graduates who have been placed in places like Granite State Manufacturing, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and
other places as well. Now, this is just one example: I could tell you about our medical assistant program, or our micro-electronics boot camp or a test tech program.”
Those partnerships and internships set up students for success after they graduate by filling their resumes with hands-on experiences. Local businesses reap the benefits of a well-trained employee pool when many other areas are experiencing a staffing shortage.
The college is also making an effort to reach out to employed people who may need additional training to advance in their careers. Garside detailed a program where GNCC taught an early childhood education course at the Merrimack YMCA, where some of the employees didn’t have their child care certificate or degree and didn’t have the means to commute to the college campus.
“They loved having us over there, to the point where now we’re allowing students to take continue additional courses at that location and actually get a certificate,” Gayside says. “We have students — like real human beings — whose lives are being improved because we went out there.”
The college is also making an effort
to connect with high school students to continue to build a pathway in educational advancement.
“Our most recent efforts are focused on building pathways from the high school to the community college,” Garside says. “We’re starting a pilot this fall with Nashua High South and North — Career Technical Education Pathways. We’re focusing on automotive technology, the culinary arts program and early childhood education. It’s a really thoughtful pathway that we’ll make available to these students, and utilizing state scholarships will save a lot toward the cost of a college education for folks. So that’s, I think, a really exciting partnership with our high schools.”
SPORTS CULTURE
Harper believes Rivier has special importance in Nashua as the city’s sole university. As the college’s athletic director, he sees sports as a means of embracing the college-city connections.
“When I was interviewing, I talked about the concept of Rivier’s athletic teams being Nashua’s sports teams,” Harper says, “The pride and the ownership over the programs is indelible.”
The more the students get involved with the community, the more the community is getting involved in the college.
“The more community service that (student-athletes) do, just simply participating in citywide events, we’re seeing more and more members of the community of all ages coming to our games,” Harper says. “We don’t charge admission, and it’s a good time. We try to host events that are family-friendly, and they look forward to our next game. So even though Conway Arena is not on campus — that’s where we play ice hockey — it’s a fun area. It’s a good take to bring your family to.”
He’s hoping that improvements in the college’s live streaming of games will encourage Nashua businesses — sports bars, particularly — to include the local matches on one of its screens.
The collegiate student-athletes help support the city community through instructional sports for Nashua youth and championing their successes.
“For example, ice hockey will have young skaters come out to the ice during introductions. We’ll call them out during basketball games, during soccer games. We provide over the summer an extensive

summer camp package, and then we also typically have free clinics throughout the course of the year for our youth,” Harper says. “That’s critically important because when the youth come on campus, they can see themselves one day going to college, whether it’s Rivier or anywhere else, to further their lives. They also look up to our student-athletes.”
Rivier has been making recent in vestments in its athletic facilities, not just for student use but as resources for the community.
“There’s been a lot of work done down here in the Muldoon Center, and then our turf field is one of the finest in New England, and that was installed two years ago,” Harper says. “When we invite the community to come out to our games, we’re bringing them into facilities that are fun, inviting and bright; they can take pride
provide that space for them to be able to get their student-athletes prepared when they need our fields. It’s a community feel, and we’re just looking forward this year to really nurturing that and moving forward.”

No one wants to be that person who sues or goes to court over the smallest problems. However, when a loved one is wronged, injured or incapacitated as a result of the carelessness of another, you want to enlist the right person to seek justice on their behalf. Whether it’s your spouse, child, parent, relative or friend who is injured, the time may come when the best option is to turn to a professional who can help you navigate the complicated path of obtaining justice.
David Gottesman has led Gottesman and Hollis, Professional Association for most of his more than 50 years in practice, facing just about every form of negligence and related injuries to individuals that you can imagine. Whether it be automobile or
motorcycle accidents, construction site failures, dog attacks, slip and falls or any other type of situation where injury occurs due to the lack of attention to safety, David has confronted it all. Some of these cases have gone all the way to trial and many have been resolved before trial when the facts are brought to bear.
As David says, “the real key is to listen to the client and then prepare the case so that the other side knows you mean business.” David has been active in his professional associations and has been recognized by his peers as a valuable resource for those in need of a qualified personal injury attorney. He stands ready to fight for you.
