from the editor’s desk THIS IS YOUR GUIDE TO RAISING A FAMILY IN THE GRANITE STATE Welcome to the 2018 Parenting New Hampshire’s Family Resource Guide, our annual compendium for Granite State parents and families. When we compile the Family Resource Guide, our goal is that you will reference it time and time again throughout the year. Whether you have lived here your entire life or have just moved into the state (welcome!), we know you will find the information that you need. In the 2018 edition, you’ll find articles on teen health, gardening with your child, afterschool STEM programs for all ages, a guide to dining out with an autistic family member, getting to know your child’s camp counselor, and more. If you still can’t find what you are looking for, go to www.parentingnh.com and click on the resources tab to access our database that contains thousands of listings. Whether you are looking for a preschool, a place to go this summer, or a dentist, you’ll find it there. In addition, as the seasons change our site is the place to go to find the best ice skating, swimming holes or hiking and biking trails. We are always adding resources and events so you are sure to find something fun to do with your family year-round. Parenting New Hampshire, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is the state’s first and original statewide parenting publication and has won more
than 30 national awards. More than 20,000 copies are distributed to hundreds of locations statewide each month. Be sure to check out our three other special publications: NH Next: Your Guide to Life After High School, Stepping Stones NH: A guidebook for people with disabilities, their families and the professionals who support them, and the Family Summer Fun Guide. Also, don’t miss Parenting NH’s Summer Camp Expos in March. Follow us between issues on www.parentingnh.com, through our weekly and monthly e-newsletters, via Twitter @ParentingNH or Facebook.

MICHAEL HAS MORE HIP POWER AND MORE HORSEPOWER After debilitating hip and knee pain, Michael Diodati is feeling like himself again. When he could no longer walk or tend to his construction business, much less his vintage car hobby, he had his knee replaced. Then, a year later, his hip. “The second time, I was a part of a new program. I attended a pre-surgical Joints in Motion class and knew what to expect every step of the way. These days, my joints and my MG are running like new.” To view Michael’s full journey and take an online pain assessment, visit lawrencegeneral.org/joints to learn more. What you need to know about
teen I wellness visits As your child grows into adulthood, their medical needs change BY ROB LEVEY
8 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2018
t happened so fast. Your cute and adorable child has become an adolescent. What, if anything, should change regarding medical care? According to Kimberly O’Mahoney, FNP at Families First in Portsmouth, the American Association of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians both encourage annual wellness visits for teens. During these visits, she said at minimum they check for vital signs and review their immunization records as well as the history as to why they are visiting the office. “They also include screenings for hearing, vision, lead, hemoglobin, lipids and other issues as deemed necessary, recommended by guidelines, or based on an individual provider's knowledge of the patient/family,” she said. She said an example of a specific screening includes the Adolescent Risk Assessment (ARA). “It is a confidential screening given to all of our 12- to 18-year-old patients,” she said. “It deals with the ‘sex/drugs/ rock and roll’ of kids’ lives, which is the way I lightheartedly get parents to leave the room so that their child and I can get some one-on-one time.” She said these private discussions are particularly crucial, as teens often divulge information they would not otherwise feel comfortable telling their parents or caregiver. “They need to know I will hold this information in confidence, and there are very few instances which require me to share this with others,” she said. Anna Swan, ARNP at Whole Life Health Care in Newington, said they generally recommend to parents that they leave the room during a physical for children older than age 14. “Above age 14, children can talk to providers about drugs, alcohol and sex—and unless we feel like they are in danger, we legally do not have to inform the parents,” she said. During these times alone, Elizabeth Melendy, MD, FAAP at Core Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine-Plaistow office, said she discusses numerous subjects with teens, including puberty changes,
BITE ME KUPCAKEZ IS A GLUTEN, DAIRY AND
social pressures, friend drama, sexuality, and substance abuse. She said the most important part of their assessment is screening teens for depression, as they are at higher risk for suicide. “We want teens to know that we are here to support them if they are feeling depressed and there is always help available,” she said. Dr. Melendy said that depression, anxiety or substance abuse can sometimes sneak up on parents, as teens often initially engage in some isolating behavior or have a bad “attitude.” “Parents understandably often attribute this to ‘hormones,’” she said. “If these behaviors are persisting, or if they are suddenly doing poorly in school or getting in trouble — either legally, at home or in school — then this may need further assessment.” In conducting annual checkups, O’Mahoney said she approaches girls and boys differently. She cited sexual health and risk-taking behaviors as just two examples of subjects she might approach differently with each of them. Dr. Melendy agreed and noted that boys and girls both experience tremendous pressures during adolescence. For any issue, she said they try to remain sensitive to a teen’s concerns to ensure they have “the happiest, healthiest life possible.” “For boys, it is sometimes peer pressure to fulfill society expectations for men — be strong, perform well in sports, grow tall, etc.,” she said. “Girls sometimes feel societal pressure about their size and watch their weight or their appearance, hair, makeup, body type…Girls also often have concerns about menstrual cycle, cramps or irregularity.” Dr. Melendy said they additionally discuss academics and time management concerns with adolescents, as middle and high school presents substantially more demands. “We also focus on autonomy and developing safe independence,” she said. There are circumstances, however, in which visits should take place more frequently, O’Mahoney said. “For example, if I have a patient on medication for asthma, depression or ADD, I am seeing them at least every three months,” she said.
According to Swan, any prolonged issues might warrant an impromptu visit to a provider, including headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, aches/pains and rashes. “Other concerns are behavior issues not resolved at home or school, anxiety or mood changes interfering with daily life – sadness, loneliness, and isolation,” she said. “Those are a few and the major ones we see.” While periodic fatigue is normal for teens, persistent sleep issues are a more serious concern. “As adolescence approaches, the normal circadian rhythm starts to shift — feeling tired later at night and wanting to sleep later into the morning,” Dr. Melendy said. “This shift can bring about problems with adequate sleep or fatigue.” Swan agrees and added, “If they complain of continued fatigue after nights of ‘normal sleep’ of eight to 10 hours each night or they are requiring extra naps, generally we want to see them.” As for whom teenagers should see for their medical checkups, Swan cited adult nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners, pediatricians, family doctors, and even some internists. “Pediatricians have training from birth through the college years,” added Dr. Melendy. “We love all ages, but teens and young adults definitely have different needs than a younger child. Our training helps to address these specific adolescent issues.” Past the age of 18, some could choose to move on to a family practice physician or family nurse practitioner. If there is one thing a parent can do to best support his/her teen in-between exams, O’Mahoney cited consistent communication with the provider. “Providers appreciate being made aware of life-changing events in a kid's life — job loss, divorce, death, family issues, housing change or challenge. It all can have an effect,” she said. “Parents need to know that it is important for kids to be seen by their providers and to consider us a safe place for their children to share physical as well as emotional/psychological concerns.” Rob Levey is a frequent contributor to Parenting NH.

Full STEAM ahead EDUCATION & CHILDCARE
Out-of-school programs that have adopted the STEAM curriculum complement the classroom experience BY ROB LEVEY
S
TEM — science, technology, engineering and math — is an educational term most parents are familiar with. But STEAM, which focuses on the those educational disciplines but also incorporates arts education, is becoming more prominent. Some wonder whether the inclusion of arts is taking away from concentrating on the original hard sciences makeup of STEM, but regardless, STEAM is, pardon the pun, picking up steam and nowhere more so than outside the classroom. Increasingly STEAM programs are offered in out-of-school settings, which Tracey Tucker, Executive Director of New Heights in Exeter and Portsmouth, said reflects an important trend in education because many budget-strapped schools are unable to offer STEAM-related programs in the classroom during the school day. “Out-of-school and after-school programs need to develop programs that reflect the latest educational trends to complement what happens in the classroom while filling in other gaps,” she said. “We need students to not only understand science, math, engineering and technology, but be able to apply their knowledge in creative ways.” Colie Haahr, STEAM & School-Aged Programs Coordinator at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Dover, agrees with Tucker and said creative thinking can be encouraged in prescribed and measured ways. “Often, when we introduce a creative project, we do not give an example of what the finished project should look like because we want kids to come up with their own ideas,” she said. She said this creative process and the problem-solving skills developed alongside it can be applied to other areas of students’ lives. “There’s also something to be said for meeting kids where they are in terms of interests,” added Haahr. “Maybe STEM topics do not sound super exciting, but art projects do, and this can open a door to other interests.” Tucker said the backdrop to STEAM is that it addresses needs in the workplace of tomorrow as well as those of today. “Research is clear in showing that the incoming workforce is struggling

with their problem-solving, social and emotional skills,” she said. “There is also a gap between the number of available STEAM-related jobs and available skilled employees and businesses are looking for help. Out-of-school STEAM programs fill that critical need in industry.” At New Heights, its transition from STEM to STEAM in the past few years has resulted in a variety of new workshops that incorporate art and creative thinking. Beautiful Biology and Sacred Geometry are just two examples of recent STEAM programming. In Beautiful Biology, participants create fiber arts inspired by microscopic views of plant life. In Sacred Geometry, participants use mathematical formulas to increase artistic aesthetics used by ancient architects. Other recent STEAM workshops at New Heights include STEAM: The Science of Color and STEAM: EcoDye Chemistry. “The feedback has been great with these programs,” said Arts and Culture Coordinator Becca Pawling. “I personally have been very excited to see research demonstrate art’s importance within education. Creative thinking, problem-solving and better communication skills are just some of the benefits from STEAM.” At the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire, Haahr said one of her favorite lessons in their STEAM lab is a roller coaster building activity, which she said incorporates physics, up-cycling, creative problem solving, and teamwork. Within the activity, she said kids use pipe insulation tubes—a foam material that is easy to cut and bend — to make roller coasters for marbles. “The challenge is to make one loop, one turn, and one trick, which can be anything they want,” she said.
“This activity really only works in teams, so it is great to see kids meet other kids in the lab and work together or bond with their caregiver while working on the project.” She said the sense of excitement and accomplishment they feel when their roller coaster works is one of the best outcomes from the activity. “Kids can often be seen jumping up and down, cheering, and laughing — and yes, they also learn a little bit about gravity, momentum, and problem solving,” she said. Haahr said the goal behind all of their STEAM programs is to help children develop the 21st-century skills they will need to pursue their interests while developing critical thinking skills. “In this age where knowledge is at our fingertips and on our phones and computers, it is more important than ever to help children become critical thinkers who do not simply digest information,” she said. “We want children to be able to assess what they find and use it to come up with creative solutions.” While there are different frameworks for 21stcentury skills, each one centers on four critical areas of development, which include: 1) collaboration and teamwork, 2) creativity and imagination, 3) critical thinking, and 4) problem solving. “We need to go well beyond just providing a student with a laptop or access to software,” said Tucker. “We need to help kids develop these 21st-century skills so they can better succeed in a global environment that is much different than it was for us as kids. STEAM is an important part of the equation.” According to Bob Baines of STEAM Ahead, which is

offered during the school day in the Manchester school system, STEAM is as much a shift in pedagogy as it is a specific curriculum. “We need to retrain teachers how to teach,” he said. “The traditional classroom is no longer viable. We can no longer teach subjects in isolation to one another. We need a whole comprehensive approach — STEAM is part of that.” Former mayor, high school principal and college president, Baines said STEAM also necessitates a redesign of the physical space in which students learn. “We have redesigned six classrooms at Manchester West High School with flexible moving furniture and chairs on wheels,” he said. “STEAM incorporates a project-based approach to learning and flexible learning environments are key.” Haahr referred to STEAM as “an essential building block in helping kids prepare for the future.” “I think the growth mindset approach helps kids to focus on their efforts rather than results — and a lot of the STEAM movement is as much about the process as the product,” she said. Tucker agrees and added, “It’s important parents understand the value of STEAM, why it’s relevant and where opportunities for it exist in their school and community...businesses are in need of employees that have developed emotional, social and other related skills — STEAM in education answers that need.” Rob Levey is a frequent contributor to Parenting NH.

This high school’s ‘School of Rock’ gives students a new creative outlet
I
t’s the end of the school day at Timberlane Regional High School and the halls are filled with students rushing from classrooms, making afternoon plans and piling onto buses for the ride home. When things begin to clear, however, the sound of a single guitar begins to echo through the recently deserted hallways. Notes bend and skip up and down the fret board as Alexander Gray, a senior at the Plaistow school, tears through a note-for-note version of Sublime’s “Santeria” on his Fender Telecaster as his fellow bandmates begin to arrive. It’s a typical Wednesday, which means it’s rehearsal day for the Timberlane Rock Ensemble. For a good 90 minutes at this time every week, the school’s Performing Arts Center becomes southern New Hampshire’s own “school of rock.” For four years now, a rotating roster of musicians have tuned-up, plugged-in and rocked through set
lists ranging from Santana to the Rolling Stones – all under the guidance of music teacher John Zevos. “It’s something that’s not really being done,” Zevos said of the unique after-school program. “It’s just another one of our strengths here – the amount of different offerings that we have. I don’t think there’s a lot of high schools around that are doing this kind of thing. “We meet once a week and we do amazingly well for just getting together once a week,” Zevos continues as other students arrive to set up equipment. “I think this is an important kind of music that I hope expands their horizons a little bit, and is still a good learning experience at the same time.” His influence has rubbed off on at least a few of the musicians. “I’ve been listening to the Beatles my whole life,” said Demetrius Shew, a sophomore from Sandown who cites John Lennon as his favorite guitarist. “But Mr. Zevos has been showing me new songs that I really like, so it’s pretty awesome.” Zevos – who also teaches music theory, guitar 1, guitar 2, guitar orchestra and assists with the school’s orchestra – draws from his own musical past to guide the young rockers. “I get charts from a guy in New York City and then I see what we have for instrumentation and I go from there,” Zevos said. As the rest of the group arrives – Justin Livingston

on drums; Gray, Shew and Brendan Kelley on guitar, Rachel Paradis on keyboard and Nick Pigott on vocals – Zevos gets them focused on attempting the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna.” Before trying the song for the first time, Zevos talks the group through the sheet music, pointing out codas, returns and making sure each student is comfortable with the arrangement. He counts them off, Paradis provides the lively intro, and the rest jump right in. “Playing ’Lady Madonna’ has been the most challenging so far,” Paradis said of her key role in the song. “In the past I’ve had more of an organ part where there are more chords and figuring out patterns. This part is the signature of the song. I start it out by myself so I knew I had to get this down.” Learning that focus is just one of the benefits of making like a Beatle, said Bill Melanson, owner of Northstar Music in East Hampstead. “The kids get so much out of learning to play an instrument,” Melanson said. “They learn determination, they learn practice skills, they learn how to work within a group and they build confidence.” Melanson’s shop has grown its own lesson program over 14 years, organizing groups and ensembles for in-store, student performances and concerts. The shop-owner has amassed an impressive list of teachers, including guitar teacher Brian McKinnon, who has strong Berklee College of Music experience, bass and ukulele teacher A.J. Pappas — also known as guitar slinger Gary Hoey’s bass player — and renowned jazz flutist Roger Ebacher who teaches piano. When multi-instrumentalist Melanson started out, he’d drop the needle on a record, try to recreate what he heard, back the needle up and do it all over again. It was a laborious process that was a far cry from organized rock lessons guided by noted teachers – let alone being included in the local after-school curriculum. “If I had been taught a proper foundation back then, if I had proper lessons and was taught how to read and taught proper positioning and scales back when I was 16 instead of learning it along the way by accident, I would’ve advanced a lot further a lot faster,” Melanson said of students’ access to programs like those at his own shop and at Timberlane, which is known for its music program. “But it certainly gave me determination.”
Having that access at school is something that has built enthusiasm among participants. “It’s just a really nice environment,” Paradis said during a break. “I like it because we get to play different songs from what you usually get to play in school, which is usually classical stuff or based around the concerts we play. I think it’s just a lot more fun and friendly since we know each other.” Livingston has taken the opportunity to polish his drum skills in the Timberlane Rock Ensemble and has joined several bands at a studio in Derry. His percussion-focused YouTube channel, JTLdrums, is growing followers and views, and he’s taken on the more difficult pieces with enthusiasm. “The most challenging for me was playing ‘Black Magic Woman,’” Livingston says of the tune Carlos Santana made famous decades ago. “There were some funky grooves in there. The whole thing was made for three percussionists – one for cymbals, one for timbales and the other for conga. But we play a lot of interesting songs in here. It’s super fun.” Vocalist Nick Pigott, who had some stage experience in the high school’s drama productions, found himself recruited thanks to his involvement in the school’s music department. “I just roped Nick in,” Zevos said, laughing. “We needed a singer and he’s in my theory class – I’ve known him for a long time, anyway – so I said, ‘Nick, you sing – want to try?’ He said he would, and he’s been doing great.” For his part, Pigott has enjoyed his time as the front man of the group, which included a winter concert that included a gig at the school’s Performing Arts Center. “It was a little nerve-wracking at first,” he said. “But after a while I kind of got it. My freshman year I was in ‘Sweeney Todd’ and I had three solos, so I was used to singing on stage, but I had never been in a band before.” It was just the latest accomplishment for the ensemble, which has seen a number of benchmarks during its four year run. “I can’t really pick the most rewarding moment,” Zevos, now in his 19th year at Timberlane, said. “But every Wednesday I go home smiling. It just gets me in such a good mood.” Bill Burke lives in southern New Hampshire with his wife and daughter. He is the managing editor of custom publications for McLean Communications in Manchester.

Tips to having a successful restaurant meal with your family BY PAMME BOUTSELIS
Dining out
with Autism Spectrum Disorder
T
aking the kids out to eat can kick start their appreciation for exploring new foods and environments — something that can last a lifetime.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Yet for some kids, it can be a bit scary entering the unknown and especially so for those on the autism spectrum. With some preparation and patience, however, there are opportunities to create memorable meals together, even away from the comfort of your own kitchen table. Consider this scenario provided by Melanie Potock, a pediatric speech language pathologist and feeding specialist, and coauthor of Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater: “When I’m working with a family with a
child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), I ask parents to imagine that suddenly I’m inviting everyone to dinner — but in a foreign country and we are going right now,” she said. “I’ve got reservations for us at a new restaurant that I’m excited about! As we enter the front door…the place just looks different than the restaurants in your hometown, and you’re not sure exactly where to rest your eyes, so you scan the room to get your bearings. You notice new aromas that are definitely not like the food at home, and even the new sounds make you feel a bit cautious, because you don’t know what to expect.” The environment is different; there are new people you’ve never seen before and the food choices are things you’ve never
30 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2018
had before — or even if you have, they aren’t prepared in the same way. While that can be disconcerting for many, imagine what it might be like for someone with ASD. “All of their senses are bombarded with new stimuli, and it can be overwhelming,” Potock said. “Our job as parents is to help prepare our kids for the new experience and support them in the process of dining out. With time and the right supports in place, kids can learn to enjoy dining out with the family.” J.P. and Stephanie Morgan have just begun venturing out with their boys, son Jaxson, 4½, and Logan, 10 months. The Nashua couple’s youngest is content as long as he has some toys and snacks to sustain him. Jaxson, though, wants his food right away and doesn’t
quite understand how to wait. “This can present a challenge, especially on a busy night that results in a wait before we are even sat,” his mom said. “He will demand to be sat and brought his food and cry if we don’t prepare.” So they talk about the process with Jaxson after watching a social story video about going to a restaurant, talk about what they saw on the way to the restaurant, and bring along toys and coloring books — and as a last resort, they might revert to a game on the phone. “He knows if he is good, he can get a dessert, too, so that makes it a little easier,” Stephanie Morgan said. “When things are difficult because waiting can be hard, we use a lot of redirect with the items we brought.” Sounds pretty typical, right? In many ways it is. Morgan said, “I would say it’s a combination of being four and having autism. Most kids at four have challenges with waiting. However, our challenge is amplified because if he’s impatient or his food isn’t what he wanted there is an urgency to get through to him before the meltdown gets worse.” It generally takes both parents to get through to Jaxson, which can be challenging in itself given they have another very young son who needs attention, too. “It will take both J.P. and I constantly repeating his name and getting him to focus on us,” she said. “We will have to gently touch his arm and say his name a few times over and over and lots of ‘look at me’ for us to even begin to redirect.”

phones as backup,” MacDonald said. “We also love restaurants with crayons and their own tablets. Also having Netflix and headphones is helpful if the boys get bored.” In spite of preparation, issues can still erupt. Over time they’ve learned “calm, but firm statements to try to calm him down” can be helpful. “We also talk about going to the ‘green zone’ to calm down,” said MacDonald. “When he has an episode, he requires lots of affirmation and physical hugs from the person he is not mad at. We’ve learned a lot of crafty ways to communicate with him so we don’t have to leave the restaurant.” It’s important to remember, Potock said, “that this takes time. Break everything down into manageable steps, including starting with just a short visit to the new restaurant and build from there. Focus on what went well! Send a thank you note or make a quick phone call to the management if they were especially helpful.” Keep in mind that dining out with kids, especially if a family member is on the autism spectrum, takes preparation and practice. Start small, celebrate successes and figure out what works best for your child. Before long, you may well find yourself looking forward to breaking away from the kitchen and enjoying a meal out with the whole family. SPECIAL NEEDS
According to Potock, having a conversation prior to the outing with other members of the family who are joining you for dinner can be helpful. “If it’s a partner or spouse, plan ahead of time for one adult to quietly help the child out of the restaurant if the situation appears to be too challenging and a meltdown is imminent,” she said. “If dining alone with your child, quietly explain to the waiter that you may need to leave immediately and you’d like give the manager your information in case there is no time to pay the bill.” Heather MacDonald and her husband, Harold Kim, of Windham, love dining out with their boys, Connor, 7, and Griffin, 6, although she acknowledges it does have its challenges. “Connor is on the spectrum and sometimes cannot control his behavior,” MacDonald said. “Griffin is allergic to many foods, including nuts and eggs. Going out to eat requires research — Is it family friendly? Is it somewhere that cooks their food with nuts? Will they tolerate loud children? We have been to restaurants where Connor will act up and we get judgmental looks from staff.” Both parents like to experiment a bit when dining out. Both boys like Mexican fare and with tortilla chips, salsa and rice — all safe choices — and friendly staff at some of their favorites, it can be a winning experience away from home. “We have downloaded games to our

camp counselors BY EMILY GOLINSKY
T
oday’s camp staff might accentuate their uniforms with unusual hairstyles or prefer to spend their free time on Snapchat rather than talking face-to-face over a cup of coffee. But rest assured the young adults who will take care of your child at camp this summer can handle the responsibility with which you are entrusting them.
1. 2. 3.
4.
How can you be sure? Well, for starters, they have: Intensive training. Camps are required to provide comprehensive training — typically one to three days for day camps and seven to 14 days (and nights) for overnight camps. Staff are trained on everything from developmental stages to behavior management, from how to help campers who are homesick to what to do if there’s a thunderstorm. Many camps also use “pre-training training” — learning opportunities for staff in the spring, so they arrive at staff training with a solid base of knowledge. Set policies and procedures. Policies are in place on everything from how to take attendance at activities (and how often) to what topics are OK to talk about with campers (versus what they should learn from trusted adults at home). The professional directors setting these policies and procedures have years — in some cases, decades — of youth development, risk management, and supervisory experience. Rest assured they are instructing counselors clearly on how to combine the good judgment expected of them with the bottom-line rules and regulations by which all staff must abide.
5. 6.
Extensive background checks. New Hampshire has some of the most regionally comprehensive rules on background checks for camp staff. At a minimum, staff hired to work with your child at licensed New Hampshire camps have undergone criminal record checks in each state they have previously lived, as well as checks of the National Sex Offender Registry. The application and interview process
for staff requires that potential staff provide a history of all previous employment and volunteer positions and also give references to the camp director. Directors you trust. You chose your child's camp for for many reasons — and high on the list was likely that you trusted the camp’s leadership. Perhaps you met the directors, or maybe you spoke with families who sent their children there. Ultimately, you believe that the directors have the best interests of your child as their first priority. That director is the person responsible for approving the counselors who will work directly with your child. The reputation of their camp relies on directors’ decisions surrounding the staff team they put in place, so you can feel confident that they seek out employees whose work ethic mirrors their own. Consistent supervision. It’s unusual — and at most camps, not allowed — for counselors to be on their own with your child, out of eyesight of other staff. Supervisory staff with additional years of experience and advanced training are always checking in, visiting activity areas to see how things are going, providing opportunities for staff development and feedback, and keeping an eye on things. Commitment to kids. And last, but certainly not least, they are committed to the safety and success of your kids. Being a camp counselor is not an easy job. Working at camp is fun, but that is far less of a daily focus for staff than taking good care of your child. Compared to the retail and fast-food jobs their friends have back home, camp counselors put in more time, work harder, and have higher expectations placed on them. For staff, free time is fleeting, pay is low, and their access to technology and social media is significantly limited. In short, this is not the kind of job young adults take unless they have a passion for working with children, an interest in changing lives, and a real desire to make a difference. That means counselors will pour their heart and soul into making sure your child’s experience at camp is the best summer of their lives. Emily Golinsky is the executive director of Camp Starfish located in Rindge.

Start a garden with Growing food helps kids connect with what they eat BY SUSAN NYE
I
s this the summer to plant your own vegetable garden? While it takes some work, growing your own food is fun and rewarding. And make sure you get the kids involved. Working in a garden connects children to their food and inspires even the pickiest of eaters to become try-most-anything adventurers. How to start? Like most things, a good garden starts with a plan. Before you head to the garden center filled with ambition and good intent, stop to consider how much time you will have, the amount of sun in your yard and your children’s ages and capabilities. It’s best to start small. It is better to be frustrated by too few vegetables than an unruly garden filled with weeds. You can always visit the pros at the farmers market on Saturday morning if you run short of zucchini. If this year is a brilliant but too small success, go big next summer.
38 www.parentingnh.com family resource book 2018
How small is small? My first garden was a handful of pots on an apartment balcony. It was a salad garden. One large pot was filled with mixed greens; a second held a cherry tomato plant; and a few more sprouted basil, chives, cilantro and parsley. With my busy schedule it was just enough. It still is. If you want to take it a step further, build a small, raised bed. Keep it simple this first year; remember it’s better to add a bed or two than pull them down. What to grow? If you start this project in early summer, seedlings are your best bet. Encourage the kids to pick a nice assortment. Cherry tomatoes and small pickling cucumbers are good for children. Zucchini is easy to grow. A few herbs like basil and parsley are nice. After all, who doesn’t like pesto? Build a raised bed garden. A raised bed is easy to build, provides good drainage for your plants and less back strain for you. A simple 3x3 or 4x4-foot bed is a great way to start. Any larger and you will have trouble weeding and harvesting the center row.
You will need: • Naturally weather- and rot-resistant wood or recycled composite plastic lumber: — 2x6-inch boards cut into 3- or 4-foot lengths for the sides — 4x4-inch boards cut into 18-inch lengths for the corner posts • 3-inch galvanized screws • Garden soil • Compost or manure • Bark mulch (optional) • Seedlings Tools: • Chop or handsaw, hatchet, drill and screwdriver • Mallet • Shovel or garden fork, rake and trowel • A garden hose with a fine mist spray Build the frame: 1. Cut the corner posts and sharpen one end of each piece with a handsaw or hatchet to make stakes.
Your child will appreciate their new “playmate”
your kids Build a raised bed garden frame
Cut eight 2x6's into 3- or 4-foot lengths.
Cut four 4x4's
in 18-inch lengths. Sharpen the ends into stakes.
Install the frame: 1. Find a nice, sunny, level spot in your yard. Remove grass and weeds. Turn over the soil to a depth of 8 to 12 inches with a shovel or garden fork and pile it up in the center, away from the edges. 2. Set your frame in place and tap down the corners. Use a mallet to drive each corner down a few inches at a time and repeat until the frame is level. Fill the garden: 1. Add compost or manure to the soil piled in the center and use a rake to spread the mix evenly. 2. Add more soil and compost and rake again. 3. Gently water the bed with a fine, even spray. Now that the bed is ready, avoid stepping in it. If you like, create a walkway around the outside of the frame with a thick layer of bark mulch. Plant your seedlings Leave plenty of room to grow between each plant. Your garden shop can advise you or check out spacing guides online. It’s okay to grow only two, three or four plants in your first year. Those tomatoes will taste even sweeter! Use a trowel to dig a hole for each seedling and pop them in. Pull the dirt back around the base of each plant and gently water. Keep the seedlings moist for the next week or two and then water as needed. One last thought… what about fruit? While you won’t get enough for a pie this year, think about adding a blueberry, raspberry or blackberry bush or two to your cart when you are at the garden center. In a year or two, your kids can go out every morning and pick fruit for their cereal. In addition, consider adding a rhubarb plant to your flower garden and planting an apple tree in the backyard. The muffins, cakes, pies and crisps will be delicious! *Lumber yards or do-it-yourself stores may cut the wood for you.
Predrill the holes.
Assemble the frame with galvanized screws.

More family time, better bottom line? Some NH businesses are embracing progressive family leave policies • BY MARY ELLEN HETTINGER, APR
W
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that allows eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for serious health conditions, to bond with a new child, or to prepare for military deployment. Your job is “protected,” meaning you can return to your position after the leave. The FMLA affects employers with at least 50 employees for 20 weeks a year. That means that 40 percent of the workforce is left out, and millions of Americans can’t afford to take time off without pay. Granite State companies with at least six employees must allow eligible employees to take time off work for a disability relating to pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions, and protect their jobs. Also, health insurance can be continued while on leave, for the same cost. Employees may also take up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave in a year to care for a family member in the military who is injured.
Family-friendly company culture
More information • For more information on the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) visit the United States Dept. of Labor website at www.dol.gov or www.das.nh.gov/hr/fmla • For more information on paid family and medical leave in New Hampshire, view the Carsey School of Public Policy brief at www.carsey.unh.edu/ publication/paid-family-leave-nh
New Hampshire businesses recognized with awards for their company culture have one thing in common: they treat their employees well. Since an engaged workforce is good for business, these companies also thrive. “A family-friendly business is a healthy business, pure and simple,” said Joe Keefe, president and CEO of Pax World in Portsmouth, an investment firm. Though a small company (about 50 employees), Pax World offers 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents. Keefe spoke at “Winning Workplaces; Paid Family & Medical Leave Insurance Summit” in Manchester last year; an article derived from his speech was printed in

hile federal law protects those needing to take time off to take care of their families, some companies in New Hampshire are extending the time employees can take off, and paying them while they are gone.
Working with Carla Moquin, founder of the Parenting in the Workplace Institute (PIWI), in 2007 Badger set up a Babies-at-Work program. “We’ve had 15 babies in the workplace since then, and everyone has an all-hands-on-deck attitude to ensure new parents can balance family and work time.”
Would you pay $5 a week? A Granite State poll in 2016 showed that 82 percent of New Hampshire adults supported a paid family and medical leave law. Last year, thanks to a U.S. Department of Labor grant, the NH Department of Employment Security, the Carsey School of Public Policy at UNH, and the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation, a conversation was started about what paid family and sick leave might look like. One hypothetical model has it working like insurance, with employee-paid payroll deductions as a percentage of their earnings. The median household income in the Granite State is about $66,000 a year (2014). According to Kristin Smith, a family demographer at the Carsey School of Public Policy and research associate professor of sociology at UNH, for approximately $5 per week, an average worker could possibly get up to two-thirds of their salary for several weeks to care for a seriously ill spouse or parent, for their own extended illness, or to care for or bond with a newborn, adopted or foster child. “Being a good corporate citizen isn’t the only key to business success,” Keefe said. But your business will be left behind if you don’t invest in your “human capital,” i.e., workforce. “Conversely, you’re gaining a competitive advantage if everyone in your business is treated with dignity, if you make accommodations for employees and their families, if you attract and promote and advance women so that your company derives the business advantages that drive from diverse leadership.” Mary Ellen Hettinger, APR is an award-winning reporter, editor and writer, and accredited public relations professional.

New Hampshire Business Review on Nov. 11, 2016. Keefe recalled, “About a year ago, I gathered together employees who had used our parental and medical leave, to ask about their experiences, and whether there was anything we could do to improve the program or the experience. It makes us more loyal, they said. It makes us more productive. It makes us a better team. It makes for stronger morale. It’s why we love working here. We know it requires support at the top and we appreciate how much the company cares about our families.” Author J. Heymann, in Why America’s Working Families Are in Jeopardy, said paid family leave promotes family well-being, especially for children and seniors. It also lets dads get more involved, and lowers infant mortality rates. A prime example of a Granite State company that has been honored for leading the way is W. S. Badger of Gilsum. This family company was started in 1995 by carpenter Bill Whyte with one product, Badger Balm, which he made to soothe his hands. Today they have 100 employees (with 20 more seasonal workers) and are leaders in making organic self-care products. W. S. Badger provides paid parental leave of up to five weeks in addition to the federal FMLA for the primary caregiver. A secondary caregiver can also get up to two full weeks of paid time within the first six weeks of a child’s arrival. “Our decisions on benefits come down to this: if people don’t come to work healthy, happy and balanced, they can’t be as productive, engaged, and loyal. Benefits to keep workers and their families mentally and physically healthy just make sense,” said Marketing and Public Relations Manager Deirdre Fitzgerald. “Owners and leaders who like to think of the company as an extended family need to see that employees’ families are integral to their lives, on and off the job. “Employees’ families are not disruptions to work; they’re motivations for it. We’ve found people will go the extra mile to make our system work smoothly. One of the biggest benefits to the company is a genuine spirit of teamwork that enhances productivity,” Fitzgerald added.
