Incorporated in 1911, the Chamber today is the most active business organization in the Manchester region, focusing its efforts primarily on the ten communities of Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Derry, Goffstown, Hooksett, Litchfield, Londonderry, Manchester and Merrimack.

The Greater Manchester Region

Manchester Located in the heart of New England, Manchester, New Hampshire, is a spectacular combination of a vibrant urban center and the famed natural beauty and abundant recreational opportunities of the Granite State. This city’s location is prime — Boston, the Atlantic Coast, and New Hampshire’s scenic White Mountains and Lakes Region are all within an hour’s reach, and thanks to our exceptional highway access and the first-class Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, Manchester is accessible from just about anywhere.

The largest city in northern New England, Manchester is located in south central New Hampshire along the Merrimack River, twenty miles from the Massachusetts border and fifty-eight miles from Boston. Although Manchester is conveniently located within an hour’s drive of destinations such as the Seacoast and the Lakes Region, it is also a destination in its own right.

Manchester is not only considered the financial center of the state but it is also home to the state’s largest civic arena and a majority of New Hampshire’s major cultural institutions. Located in downtown Manchester is the Palace Theatre, which attracts nationally known performers from across the country. The area is also home to ten colleges and universities.

The Greater Manchester region is made up of Manchester, the state’s largest city, and nine surrounding communities, each with a unique personality, a distinct lifestyle and many housing options. The city boasts 900 acres of parks, playgrounds and public spaces. Lodged at the base of the Uncanoonuc Mountains, the town enjoys easy access to I-93, Route 3 and proximity to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

Candia Candia is primarily a residential community with easy access to the seacoast, the city of Manchester and the University of New Hampshire. Candia is home to a variety of recreational options, including an 18-hole golf course, Candia Springs Adventure Park, Candia Vineyards, Charmingfare Farm – which attracts visitors from all over the region to experience exotic wildlife and sleigh/hay rides – and the Abe Emerson Marsh.

Getting Here By Car If you are visiting the Manchester area by car, you will find it is strategically situated at the intersection of the state’s major north/south and east/west highway systems. From the North, follow Interstate 93-South. From the South, follow either Interstate 93-North or the F.E. Everett Turnpike North. From the East or West, follow Route 101. Once near the city Interstate 293, which follows the Merrimack River, several exits will lead you to downtown Manchester.

Welcomee to Manchester Infrastructure, innovations make for a more accessible, attractive city

anchester’s downtown has built a reputation in recent years for being a lively, vibrant, family-friendly destination. And thanks to some innovative planning, the city can now add a few new terms to that description: nimble, approachable and easily-accessible.

Improved infrastructure, innovative city transportation, a new bike sharing system, walking paths and upgraded city parks have all contributed to the accessibility of the Queen City.

Whether it’s on four wheels, two wheels or even no wheels, visitors have a variety of easy-to-use, lowcost options for maneuvering through a city center that has been given a new look.

In October, Manchester Connects – a grass-roots civic group – released a report that detailed key initiatives designed to make the city’s downtown and the Millyard more accessible and welcoming. In the report, Manchester Connects cited five key elements: • Create vibrant public spaces • Promote complete streets design and multimodal transportation choices • Build a world-class Riverwalk and an iconic pedestrian bridge • Support mixed land uses and smart parking strategies • Create and sustain Manchester Connects According to Manchester Connects, the Millyard and Manchester’s downtown host the core of the city’s knowledge workers and account for 28 percent of the city’s business and nearly 31 percent of its payroll.

A collection of city leaders and civic groups have embarked on a number of these goals over the past year, targeting a variety of approaches to make Manchester more accessible.

Two Wheels A few minutes on Elm Street reveals the typical sounds of a busy city – the hum of cars passing by, an occasional horn or siren and the buzz of visitors heading to appointments. But since early June there’s been a new addition to the urban soundtrack – the familiar tinkling of a bicycle bell. It’s a tangible alert that Bike Share Manchester has moved into the Queen City.

Bike Share Manchester is a way for residents and visitors to rent a bike, cruise around the city and then

return it to one of several centrally-located ‘stations.’

“Manchester is a pretty compact city and it lends itself very well to things like Manchester Bike Share,” says Will Stewart, executive director of Stay, Work, Play New Hampshire and co-chair of Bike Manchester.

Thirty-five bicycles are parked at seven ‘stations’ around the city, ready to be unlocked and taken for a spin. Whether it’s heading to a lunch, zipping across town to a meeting or enjoying a relaxing tour along the river behind Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, Bike MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 13

Share Manchester is allowing people to see the city from a quieter, more eco-friendly perspective.

“It’s a convenient, efficient mode of transportation, especially in more dense areas of the city,” says Stewart. “For example, people sometimes complain that parking in the Millyard can be difficult. If you want to get away for lunch and you drive, you lose your parking space – you don’t want to give it up. If you walk to a restaurant on Elm Street, it could take 10-15 minutes each way. [Manchester Bike Share] shortens that time frame.”

the plan came together over a two-year period. It has been paid for entirely by private funds.

“I’m a big biker myself, and I really feel life is better on a bike,” Gayman says. “Every major city is getting on board with bike sharing, and the infrastructure seems to follow. Will Stewart, my partner in this, says the more people are on bikes, the more people will ride bikes. It makes motorists aware and they’re more safety-conscious.”

Visitors have a variety of easy-to-use, low-cost options for maneuvering through a city center that has been given a new look.

Here’s how it works: users download the Zagster app, follow the instructions to unlock a bike and then take it for a ride. When the ride is complete, just return the bike to any one of the seven stations throughout the city. Membership options include renting a bike for $2 an hour, or choosing a monthly or annual billing cycle. Bike stations are located at Stanton Plaza, the downtown YMCA, the Puritan Backroom, City Hall Plaza, in front of the Southern New Hampshire University offices and Gateway Park. The newest station will open on the west side at Catholic Medical Center in the spring.

Carol Gayman, who served as liaison between UNH Manchester and the Granite YMCA, was the impetus behind bringing the program to the city. Her initial mission: ensure UNH Manchester students became more active – which proved to be a challenge thanks to busy schedules and limited time, until she Googled ‘bike share companies.’ Gayman discovered the Cambridge, Mass.-based company Zagster, and

city is moving toward becoming friendlier to residents and visitors on two wheels.

“The Department of Public Works has been incredibly supportive by trying to make Manchester a more bike-friendly city,” she says. “It makes motorists more aware that they’re sharing the road with a biker.”

Stewart says the reception to the program has been positive, with more than 325 users signing up to use the system in the first two months alone.

“Some people say they haven’t ridden a bike since they were a kid, but now they can just hop on and hop off whenever they want to,” Stewart says.

Manchester Bike Share is operating as a two-year pilot program and was funded entirely by private funds and sponsorships. The bikes are cruiser style, with adjustable seats to fit adult riders, automatic front and rear lights, a Bluetooth electronic lock, seven gears and a fender and chain guard to keep riders clean.

The program, Stewart says, is even being used to

attract young professionals to the city.

“Companies are using it to promote their employees’ health and as an amenity – as a recruiting tool through HR,” he says. “Having something like bike share in visible locations, where potential employees see it, is not just selling their own company and benefits, it’s also selling Manchester. They see it and know this could be a cool place to be and to work.”

Organizers are planning to expand the program, and have eyed the Millyard, Fisher Cat Stadium, the Elliot at River’s Edge and the Currier Museum of Art as potential future bike rack locations.

Four Wheels Traveling around the city on a Manchester Transit bus has gotten more efficient and useful, but it’s also about to get more comfortable.

The city’s bus fleet, which serves more than 35,000 people monthly, has begun replacements and upgrades designed to make the vehicles user-friendly.

The city has begun using New Flyer MiDi buses, which feature a number of improvements.

“They’re much better buses,” says Mike Whitten, executive director of Manchester Transit. “Inside there are all kinds of new amenities. The seats aren’t molded plastic – they have much more comfortable seats with cloth seats and cushions. The entrances are wider, there’s different securement access for mobility devices, which means people can get on and off the buses much easier.”

Several of the vehicles have new fare boxes, the ability for users to pay using their smartphone, and plans are afoot to allow people to check an app that will let them know how far away a bus is, and when they can expect it to arrive.

“We’re aiming to make it all more convenient,” Whitten says.

tions to service and routes. In September, Manchester Transit began service along route 5 – River Road to Southern New Hampshire University – and route 11 – traveling to Manchester Community College and the French Street/Hackett Hill area. It also added three additional hours of service at night, running until 9:30 p.m. The new routes were chosen based on demographic studies that showed students were most likely to use the buses. Also, much of the traveling will be self-contained, with very little transferring.

“It makes Manchester a more accessible city in a few ways,” says Whitten. “We now run inter-city buses to places like Concord and Nashua and most of the border towns due to response to our shuttles. It’s one way of getting people into Manchester – whether they’re going to a business or a restaurant or to the ballpark or the arena – where parking is a challenge. You get people to leave their cars at home and take the bus, and if they’re walking to their destination they’re more apt to stop into some businesses along the way.

“The other is that it’s opening up employment opportunities for those who live in the city and work elsewhere. If they can’t find employment in the city but they can find a job in, say, Goffstown or Nashua or Concord, this makes it more possible.”

Veterans Park – located on Elm Street between Central and Merrimack Streets – also saw a number of upgrades and changes. The World War II monument was refurbished, new plantings and lights were added, and eye-catching LED lamps that simulate old fashioned gas lamps were also installed.

“The parks hadn’t been touched in 20-30 years,” says Chris Sullivan, park planner for the city. “Right now we’re also doing the medians on Granite Street.

They were done 5-10 years ago, but they’ll be beautified so that when people come into the city, they’ll see it looks really nice.”

Sullivan says officials are also looking at erecting a permanent stage at Veterans Park, where many concerts and events are held each year.

“That would allow us to hold smaller, intimate concerts or to use it as a meeting place,” Sullivan says.

“There would be a green room, a sound room and dressing rooms so people wouldn’t have to go to the Radisson Hotel across the street to get dressed.”

City planners have also teamed with the University of New Hampshire to make changes to Gateway Park. A community-driven pilot project would see Gateway Park – located in the city’s Millyard at the corner of Commercial and Granite Streets – take on new life with a number of changes. A design charrette submitted this past year included plans to connect the park to both the downtown, the Millyard and the Merrimack River.

Among the plans: new plantings, spaces to gather in small groups, a small, natural amphitheater, interactive art and a water feature.

“We’re going to have a beautiful gateway into the

city,” says Sarah Jacobs, director of strategic initiatives at UNH Manchester. “It’s important because it’s one of the main entry points into the city. Victory Park was reimagined and made beautiful. Veterans Park is in the process of getting upgrades, and although it’s small, Gateway Park is a key area where there isn’t currently a lot of green space. This will benefit everyone.”

Gateway Park improvements will help connect the Millyard to Elm Street, as will a new walking pathway called The Loop.

The new Millyard walking loop includes signage and markings to promote walking between Elm Street and the Millyard. The Loop touches on Elm, Granite, Commercial and Stark Streets.

The kickoff celebration was held in October, and a larger event is being planned for the spring.

“We’re really lucky to have these beautiful spaces set aside,” Jacobs says. “And it’s important to make the most of them.” n www.manchester-chamber.org

New Manchester restaurant offers dramatic surroundings and top-notch fare

W

hen is a restaurant not a restaurant?

When it’s Cabonnay – one of Manchester’s newest, and certainly most dramatic, dining spaces.

The restaurant/urban wine house/retail spot, located near the intersection of Bridge Street and Elm Street, had its soft-opening several months ago.

What early visitors found inside is unlike anything, anywhere.

In a city quickly becoming known for a number of top-notch dining destinations, Cabonnay stands out for its unusual approach to creating a unique and memorable vibe.

The artwork that adorns the striking surroundings, the welcoming yet utterly unique dining environments, the hand-picked, scene-setting music and the forward-thinking processes that drive the pulse of the restaurant from the gleaming kitchen to the top floor, are part of a space unlike any in the city.

“We’re classified as a restaurant, and I think that’s the right classification for us, but we never set out to create a restaurant – we set out to create a place and an experience,” owner Cornelis de Jong says. “That’s why this is so different.”

a stylish 24-seat space of crisp white décor perfect for enjoying something from the hand-picked wine list or a craft cocktail.

Step a little further inside, just past the piano and the wine racks, and the first private dining room reveals itself. An undercurrent of carefully-chosen music draws visitors in, but it may be the dramatic décor, the art, and the video clips and images projected onto the walls that hold their attention.

A wide staircase leads up from a retail space to the Conservatory room on the second floor, and then out to one of the more unique dining spots in the city – Cabonnay’s rooftop deck. A “cool little perch” that looks out over the humming traffic below, the deck treats diners who arrive at the right time (and the right time of year) to a stunning sunset over Manchester Place.

“What’s so unique about us is it’s not a traditional floor plan,” de Jong says. “Each room feels different, and each area feels different and it’s also nice people come back. People will have a private dinner here and then come back to be more relaxed up in the Conservatory room. It’s really nice to see how people almost treat this like a house: ‘I was in the formal living room and now I’m in the dining room, and now I’m on the patio.’ So that works for us and it’s been successful.”

The deck itself can easily accommodate 50 people, yet de Jong says he and his partner, David Thompson, took a different approach.

“I really believe that space is luxury,” he says. “You can enjoy comfort. You’ll see you can have a private conversation without overwhelming anybody next to you anywhere in the restaurant, so the roof deck is the same mentality. It handles 50 people comfortably but we only set it up for 30.”

De Jong, a towering figure, moves through the building, offering tips and asking questions of the staff preparing for the day’s guests before thoughtfully explaining the concept of Cabonnay (the name comes from a blending of the words Cabernet and Chardonnay), and why Manchester was the perfect location for the groundbreaking spot.

The road that led him to the comfortable chair looking out over Bridge Street is a circuitous one. His father is Dutch, from the Netherlands, and de Jong was born in South Africa. At 18, he moved to North Carolina, then worked in the Washington, D.C. metro area for some time, spent 15 years in Chicago and then stopped in to San Diego for two years before landing in the Granite State.

“If you draw a map from the Netherlands to here, it’s quite wild,” he says.

owntown Manchester has grown into a cultural center boasting theater, art, sports and music of every kind.

With that success comes an undeniable fact: Visitors who flock to the city’s center for these experiences will need to eat. Luckily, the Queen City’s restaurateurs have built a foodie’s playground that has developed into a likeminded community with a shared mantra: the more the merrier.

Though the frigid temperatures of an especially cold winter dealt an unfortunate blow to a popular Elm Street eatery last February, the warmth of Manchester’s downtown hospitality community helped thaw things out.

“I look at it this way,” Baines says. “The average person is going to spend $40 – and that’s a decent amount of money. They’re choosing to spend it at Mint Bistro over 10-15 other options downtown, so I want to make sure they feel like family.”

Just around the corner on Hanover Street, Steven Clutter is arriving at the Crown Tavern to start the day.

The Crown Tavern is Clutter’s second restaurant on the street – he also owns the Hanover Street Chophouse – but the two eateries are quite different.

The restaurant began its life as the Crown Theater before closing in 1961. Its lineage is apparent in the freshly-redesigned spot that harkens back to its days as a movie house. It’s also a departure from its more formal cousin just up the street – and that’s by design.

“It’s a neighborhood spot,” Owner Steven Clutter says. “It’s not a bistro, it’s not tapas, it’s just a neighborhood spot where you can hang out, take your family, dress casually and get in and out for a reasonable price.”

Clutter says the focus on core ingredients maintains the level of quality people expect from the Hanover Street Chophouse. The menu, however, is more affordable, reflecting the neighborhood-hangout feel, and features items that may not appear in the dining room up the street. Smaller, shareable ‘snacks’ like fried cheese fritters, pepper candied bacon and house-made chips start things off, with entrees ranging from wood-fired pizza to burgers to steak.

Wander by the front of the restaurant and it becomes clear quite quickly: it’s a combination that works.

“It’s kind of cool,” Clutter says. “The first couple of nights the dining room was set up properly, but as the night wore on, a four-top became a six-top, a six-top became an eight-top – I kind of got a tear in my eye because it was exactly what we wanted.”

The dining area is focused around a large, curved banquet that faces the bar and divides the room. The upholstered seating is inviting, and creates warmth and intimacy in an otherwise open space. An outdoor dining space is lit by strings of sparkling lights and sits alongside a fenced-in green space that serves as an oasis in the middle of the city.

In the kitchen, a large wood-fired oven, customcrafted by The Wood Stone Corporation in Washington state, plays an important role. Clutter and Executive Chef Stuart Cameron traveled to Washington to run the oven through its paces before deciding to bring it to Hanover Street. Next to it, a la plancha grill is used exclusively for the Crown’s renowned burgers.

Clutter’s influence can be felt from the menu to the kitchen, but he says in the end it will be the customers who dictate direction.

“I saw a review online where someone wrote that you don’t come in here looking for a quiet date night.

The chances are that you’ll see six tables where you’ll know everyone and everyone will know your name.

I thought, ‘boom – that’s it.’ I look forward to coming down here, getting something to eat, meeting my wife here and hanging out.” n www.manchester-chamber.org

of studying environments, demographics, business growth trends and government regulations brought him here.

“There were three states high on our list and New Hampshire won out for two reasons,” he says. “One, we truly felt it was the best state to move businesses into, and two, we have family in northern Massachusetts – so that did tip the scale.”

The original concept called for a location between Windham and Manchester. An initial start

of construction followed before the doors were first opened – quietly.

“I don’t think many people knew about us at first,” de Jong says. “We were basically running a test kitchen for a while. It’s like taking a cruise ship out on the water – you’ve got to run all the systems to make sure it’s good.”

Things began to click and soon after the team brought in Executive Chef Angelina Jacobs. Born and raised in the area, she comes from a long line

The whole experience is focused on wine country, wine lifestyle, relaxation, and taking time out in an inspiring environment in Londonderry was abandoned when the original plans didn’t resonate with abutters and builders proved to be significantly backlogged. That’s when the team discovered the corner spot on Bridge Street.

“We became aware of three properties – this being one of them – that were intriguing to look at,” he says. “When we saw this building we started thinking about how we could improve the experience here. One of the really cool things about the building is that it sticks right out into Bridge Street. You can see the traffic has to actually turn to miss us. It gives a really great view and you can really see everything. It’s just a good place to be.”

The project, then, began in earnest. Structural analysis, architectural drawings and then 10 months

of fishermen and clammers. She’s always been in touch with nature – working on farms for much of her life – so she has a close relationship with many farmers and fishermen in the area and is inspired by the farm-to-table movement.

The menu offers appetizers ranging from roasted eggplant and grilled artichoke to Maine razor clams and poached local duck egg; entrees include poached lobster, seared salmon and stuffed quail; and an array of desserts tempt at the conclusion of each meal.

The wine list is hand-picked with a purpose.

Restaurateurs: Manchester dining poised for explosive growth Cornelis de Jong was looking to open a new restaurant. What he discovered in Manchester was a destination, in his estimation, ready to blossom.

“We’ve done a good job on Elm Street and invigorating that environment,” de Jong says. “There are some really good restaurants and eateries there. Manchester is in my mind – and this is why I’ve invested in it – poised for an explosion.”

De Jong cites new condo complexes, downtown revitalization, business growth and downtown accessibility among the elements lining up for the Queen City’s future.

“There’s just a lot happening,” he says. “All these people have to eat dinner somewhere. So for us, the idea was that you can really enjoy the growth of Manchester and participate in that growth. I always tell people we’re really for Manchester’s future, not Manchester’s present. I think sometimes people read that as a negative or almost as a slight, and I really say that it’s incredibly positive.

We did this project believing in what Manchester will be and where it’s going and what’s relevant for where it’s going.”

Manchester has emerged as a top dining destination over the past decade, with new and innovative restaurants moving into the downtown area and providing wide-ranging, groundbreaking options for hungry visitors.

house Owner Steven Clutter has had a front-row seat for the downtown’s dining renaissance.

“I think it’s obviously light years from where it was before,” he says. “The culture here is that ‘everybody knows me, and we know everybody.’ We treat them like royalty.”

Clutter cites Tim Baines, owner of the Mint Bistro, and Jeff Paige, owner and chef at Cotton, as fellow restaurateurs who have helped raise the city’s dining profile.

“When I first opened the Chophouse, you couldn’t find anyone walking up and down Elm Street,” Clutter says. “Now it’s great to see people walking up the street, going to restaurants and bakeries there.

“Over at Republic and Campo, they’ve always said ‘the more the better.’ And you know, I think he’s right.”

New and innovative restaurants are moving into the downtown area, providing wide-ranging, groundbreaking options for hungry visitors Baines says the city has never had the quality – and the quantity – of great dining options as it does now.

“It’s fantastic, and it only continues to get better,” he says. “If you look at where we are now, versus the late 90s – there may have been one solid dining option downtown. Now, saying there are 10 is an understatement. There are so many options and cuisines, and a lot of these people are really invested in the community as restaurant owners. They want to see Manchester succeed. It’s probably the best it’s ever been.” n

would have to be. The wine list isn’t strictly American Wines or Napa wines. They’re Californian wines, but they’re joined by carefully considered selections from Chile and Brazil, among other grape growing regions.

“We again took the hard road,” de Jong says of choosing wines. “Our wine list is very unique.

We try to pick things that are not listed in most restaurants. We actively looked at other restaurants and we tried to not list what they have. The other thing that’s very different about us is we pick by region. We pick by grape varietal and we also consider ratings. But ratings are nice to have, it’s not a must have. So, for example, if we have a Californian Cabernet, I’m not adding another California Cabernet. I’d like to see if there’s a Chilean Cabernet or is there something else. Our wine list was always focused on being worldly, which is, I’d rather have 80 wines and we can talk about them, we know why they were selected, we all tasted them, we all understand them, and we can represent them well from a diverse portfolio perspective – versus having a giant wine book.”

The wine selection will often change as the restaurant boasts an active, evolving inventory.

“Our focus was on fewer wines, but more interesting wines,” he says. “The other thing about the wines is price point. Our price points are hovering between $40-80. I had no intent of listing wines, and five pages of it, of $200 and $400 wines.

I think it’s impressive, it’s nice if you want to build up a collection, but it’s not who we are. Who we are is a place where there’s an affordability aspect and there’s an experience aspect to it. Sitting down and having a bottle of wine for $45 in a restaurant is on the lower end. With us there are multiple choices where you can really enjoy good wine. So the wine selection is very personal. We absolutely focused on it.”

The staff is set, the menu perfected, the wine list considered and the design complete – which leaves one primary ingredient that can only be added with time: longevity. The building was conceived to be a space that has longevity to it, and to have a sense of place.

“I know it sounds like a cliche, but it really is that,” de Jong says. “To create that sense of place, you need to ensure that it doesn’t disappear in six months.

“It’s almost like a symphony hall. You build the structure, but you’re not the musician. The musicians are the chefs and they play different songs every night. The bartenders, they play different songs. There’s different shows — maybe it’s a classical concert, maybe it’s holiday pops.

The building is still the attraction. You come here, you sit and you wonder what’s going to happen tonight. Nothing for us is normal.” n

Opportunity Abounds Manchester emerges as biotech hub

T

he Queen City has long been a base for engineering and design firms developing and servicing medical devices, but one of those firms – DEKA Research and Development Corp – has been awarded the opportunity to develop a new industry that has the potential to make Manchester a prominent player in the national biotech ecosystem.

Recent innovations have increased the Queen City’s visibility and connection to the larger technology community, and moves by notable Granite State leaders have already led to new companies relocating into the city’s Millyard. The result: Manchester’s biotech and technology future is bright.

It all started in 2016, when opportunity knocked on inventor Dean Kamen’s door.

As the founder and president of DEKA Research and Development Corp., Kamen has developed

devices ranging from HomeChoice, a portable peritoneal dialysis system, to the Luke Arm, an advanced robotic prosthesis developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense.

It was the Dept. of Defense that requested Kamen submit a proposal to win the more than $80 million, five-year contract to advance stem cell research with the goal of manufacturing blood, organs and skin and connective tissue for injured soldiers.

Kamen immediately jetted around the country, convincing 46 companies and 26 academic and medical research institutions to raise an additional $200 million and become members of the initiative BioFabUSA. To satisfy DOD’s request to provide a reliable future workforce to fulfill the contract, Kamen suggested a partnership with the University of New Hampshire in Manchester, which readily agreed

to intertwine its biotechnology program with the initiative.

Later that year, DEKA was awarded the contract, and in July 2017, the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) launched with 400 people and more than 50 out-of-state companies from 20 states in attendance.

“I think this is the beginning of an industry,” said Kamen, after ARMI’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I think we have more major companies, universities, medical schools, prestigious government institutions here than I’ve ever seen in one room at one time and I think they understand how big this opportunity is.”

Housed at 400 Commercial Street in the Manchester Millyard, ARMI is situated close to DEKA and UNH Manchester. The building allows space for partners to perform research, while its 6th floor is dedicated to UNH Manchester, where up-to-date

bioscience laboratory infrastructure is being placed to provide workforce training. The 6th floor will also house a biotech company incubator facility.

The concept, says Mike Decelle, dean of UNH Manchester and ARMI’s chief workforce officer, is to allow students an opportunity to intern with the institute or with companies that have moved to Manchester to be associated with the institute.

“We think it’s a force for net migration into the state, and a place where those students will stay because of the opportunities presented,” says Decelle, who has already seen an influx of highly qualified teaching professionals apply to work at UNH Manchester since the announcement of ARMI. Dr. Richard McFarland, a former official with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, met Kamen at the White House when Kamen accepted the contract offer.

Having focused for nearly 20 years on how the FDA would regulate a future regenerative medicine industry, Dr. McFarland immediately proposed to work for the institute, where he is today, working with UNH Manchester to enhance one of its online biotechnology courses and planning to teach a section of “The Business of Biotechnology” course.

Developing a workforce is critical to the future of ARMI.

“We think this is an industry where every American worker can participate,” regardless of degree attainment, says Gray Chynoweth, chief membership officer and deputy chief operating officer at ARMI. Through Kamen’s nonprofit, FIRST Robotics Competition, ARMI is making an effort to encourage the next generation of workers to become engaged with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

For the current workforce, ARMI will share technology with fellow manufacturers and provide retraining through the New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), which will have a representative housed at the institute. NH MEP is also launching an online database of all manufacturers in the state to foster collaboration with ARMI. “No matter what business you’re in – trust me, you’ll want to be part of this,” says Kamen.

Chynoweth, who has worked for Manchesterbased technology firms Dyn and SilverTech, thinks ARMI will help increase Manchester’s visibility and connection to the greater Boston biotech economy.

“Just like Manchester has become a clear extension of the Boston ecosystem for software – with the purchase of Dyn by Oracle, and Texas Instruments, Autodesk and Blackbaud using Manchester as a Boston interface – I think that ARMI has a

chance to cement Manchester as part of that Boston ecosystem,” says Chynoweth.

Throughout the year, ARMI will also hold events that encourage industry networking, providing outof-state businesses more exposure to Manchester and the benefits of locating here.

Already, there are companies moving to the Millyard because of ARMI. Advanced Solutions Design Software, a Louisville, Kentucky-based company that has created BioAssemblyBot – a robot that can build 3-D models of tissue using patients’ DNA – is in the process of moving its research and development team.

When the director of the research and development team, Dr. James Hoying visited Manchester for the ARMI’s opening, the Manchester Chamber provided him and his family with an itinerary and even enabled Dr. Hoying to throw the first pitch at a Fisher Cat’s game.

“From the very beginning, the Chamber of Commerce has been a fantastic partner in helping us to showcase the best that Manchester has to offer,” says Chynoweth. “Ahead of our launch event, they put together welcome bags that included gift certificates to local restaurants and tickets to museums.”

been housed in an incubator in Kendall Square, paying $26,000 a month for 600 square feet and a shared common lab.

“I told [CEO Monika Weber] we have a better alternative for her,” says Kamen. “She ought to move up to New Hampshire. We can get her better resources and better support and get a substantially better rate on 6,000 square feet, and she’s in the process of moving up.”

Whether it’s companies that manufacture tooling or those that engineer tissues, Chynoweth says ARMI will be working with several companies that are nearby or across the country, though “companies close to us will be able to help more intensively.”

“Everyone feels like now is the time for there to be a real acceleration and commercialization of engineered tissues and that ARMI and the BioFabUSA program will serve as a real catalyst for that accelera-

tion,” says Chynoweth.

Christina Ferrari, a former neuroscience researcher who moved from Boston to work as a lawyer in Bernstein Shur’s Manchester office, has kept a close eye on the growth of the biotech and medical device industries in New Hampshire.

“There’s a nice biotech ecosystem in the Lebanon area, but they’re their own little microsystem up there,” says Ferrari, who is part of the committee organizing the New Hampshire High Tech Council’s BioTech/MedTech Cluster. “I think the greatest potential for growth is the southern New Hampshire area and up the Seacoast to Portland.”

Ferrari hopes ARMI will attract more biotech and medical device companies to the greater Manchester area.

“New Hampshire has this really great niche in product development,” says Ferrari. “Manufactur-

ers are actually creating components or devices themselves for companies in the greater Boston area and around the country, and they’re mostly smaller companies, but they’re quite successful and they’re supplying the bigger companies around the world.”

About 25 percent of Bernstein Shur’s work services biotech firms, but Ferrari expects that to grow substantially over the next five to 10 years.

Cindy Harrington, business development manager at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development and a founding member of the BioTech/ MedTech Cluster, agrees. She expects ARMI and New Hampshire’s growing bioresearch sector will attract outside talent including scientists and professors.

“You have ARMI in Manchester and it’s in great proximity to Boston-Cambridge and Dartmouth.

A lot of companies want proximity to the BostonCambridge market, to hospitals for clinical trials. They want to be accessible to research going on,” says Harrington.

Furthermore, ARMI, Kamen proposes, could change the manner in which early research and development is performed, having a global ripple effect on the health care market.

“What if we could give you a 3-D model using real human cells in a real engineered environment where we could really monitor everything? That could, for the drug companies, be a way to dramatically shorten the time it takes to develop and to test a drug,” says Kamen. “What would that mean to the public? The development time gets shorter, the risk of side effects in real life is much lower, which would all make it more cost-effective.” n

Manchester schools innovate New programs designed to prep students for changing, complex world

W

hen students return to school after summer break, it typically takes some time before everyone is back in the school

year routine.

Not so, at the Parker-Varney School.

A new program at the school has resulted in rising test scores, increased reading proficiency and classrooms of students who are ready to begin learning the day they return to the classroom.

It’s just one of the innovative changes throughout the Manchester School District that’s allowing administrators to examine education in a new light.

Parker-Varney Principal Amy Allen has helped implement the Multi Grade program – a system where multi-age and multi-grade classes are combined into ‘bands,’ allowing students to progress when they’re ready, and receive extra help when they’re ready.

Students at the Parker-Varney School take part in the Multi Grade program – just one of the innovative programs put in place to help boost students’ academic performances.

Where grades are traditionally organized by age, the Multi Grade model mixes multiple grade levels and ages into one classroom, or band. Grade bands are organized into kindergarten/first grade; second/third grade; fourth/fifth grade – which allows teachers to gather and review data and then respond to academic and social needs when needed most.

“The kids benefit by being able to move on when they’re ready and get extra help before they move on,” Allen says. “Students who had been cruising along before – we’re now able to push them.”

Multi-age classrooms also help boost students’ academic performance. The school’s second grade students in the second/third grade band went from 29 percent proficient in September 2016 to 77 percent proficient in June 2017 on i-Ready reading assess-

ments. English Language Learners went from 54 percent proficient in September 2016 to 85 percent proficient in June 2017. The school has also seen a decrease in Special Education referrals by 20 percent.

These successes have caught the attention of national organizations examining classroom performance.

“We’ve had a lot of national visitors,” Allen says. “The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation came to see the school, Hewlett-Packard came to visit and the Zuckerberg Foundation visited.”

Teachers at the school adapted to the new approach, entering into a co-teaching model. Allen says the staff met the challenge and began to excel quickly.

“They now had to work with another adult, and they really have become those curriculum experts,” she

says. “It strengthens them as educators, because now we’re looking at the curriculum as a vertical. It’s made their jobs easier because they’re able to give students what they need in tasks that are do-able.”

Students also track with these adults for several years during their time at the school. So for students experiencing stress from issues like poverty, parental incarceration, substance abuse, death and neglect, these relationships and support become quite important and essential to the ‘whole child’ approach.

Then there’s the detail of getting everyone on the same page quickly.

“We’ve noticed that the rituals and the routines of opening a classroom are different,” Allen says. “The students came back to learn much more quickly. We noticed when we assessed them in the fall that they retained what they learned the previous year.”

The Multi Grade approach is just one of the improvements the district has undertaken recently, and if Dr. Bolgen Vargas has his way, that innovation will become an integral part of the Manchester School District’s DNA. “That would be my dream,” says Vargas, superintendent of Manchester Schools. “We’re not there yet, but we’re making strides. In the 21st century, unless you innovate, you’re not going to succeed as a school system or a corporation or as any type of organization.”

Since coming to Manchester in September of 2016, Vargas has worked with administrators and overseen a series of programs designed to help better prepare students for a rapidly-changing future. Multiple partnerships throughout the community, including revisit-

Manchester Community College works with city’s schools to give students a head start

A

s families look for ways to finance higher education, as the price continues to climb, New Hampshire’s community college system – and Manchester Community College, in particular – is providing an affordable, innovative option.

Two programs at Manchester Community College are helping younger students find a clearer, more affordable way to higher education.

Running Start allows students to take courses for college credit in their high school setting, and Early College provides students the opportunity to take courses on a college campus to accelerate their progression through higher education.

Running Start began in 1999 as a partnership between the community colleges of New Hampshire and the state’s high schools to provide an opportunity for students to take college courses for college credit while simultaneously completing the requirements to graduate high school. The Running Start courses are taught at the participating high school by credentialed high school faculty as part of the daily class schedule.

“It’s a way of giving students a jump start,” says Dr. Susan Huard, president of Manchester Community College. “There are some who plan carefully who have completed the equivalent of their first semester in college by the time they’ve graduated high school.”

Running Start gives students the opportunity to prepare for the demands of a college workload, puts them on the pathway to a successful college career, builds confidence in their academic abilities and it does it all at a greatly reduced rate. Tuition is just $150.

“It’s a great bonus for the students and for their parents,” Huard says. “Obviously there’s the economic advantage – it’s possible to save $25,000-plus. And these are college credits.

The curriculum is vetted and they face the same rigors he or she would see in a classroom on a college campus, only they’re sitting with classmates they’ve known, teachers they’ve known, and it’s less stressful and a great way to get started.”

All of Manchester’s public high schools are participating in the Running Start program, with 370 students currently registered and taking part.

“I think it’s a great efficiency,” Huard says.

“They’re doing college-level work while they’re in high school or they’re at home, they’re shortening their path. College courses move at a pretty rapid pace. When students are doing a Running Start course, it goes a little longer than a college course, so the initial experience through the program is yes, it’s college credit, but they’ll have the support one usually sees in the high school environment.”

The classes offered include anatomy and physiology, biology, calculus, physics and chemistry in programs like advanced manufacturing, marketing and engineering. The college faculty works with high school teachers to ensure the courses maintain standards identical to those taught at the college.

“The most popular class we offer is college composition,” Huard says. “I’d also add business and computer science, graphic design and, of course, since 20 percent of what Manchester Community College offers is technical – automotive and HVAC – there’s a lot of variety.

There’s some lab and some theoretical.”

Huard says the program attracts two types of students: those looking to get a jump start on a classic liberal arts education and students looking to enter the technical field. Manchester Community College has cutting-edge lab equipment that isn’t available in high school programs.

Students taking part in Early College are tracked by counselors to ensure they’re staying on-track and keeping up with the faster pace of studies.

“There are many advantages for students who are accelerating their experience,” Huard says. “One of the impacts is on career choices.

We talk a lot about creating pathways, so when a student knows what he or she wants to pursue, they can proceed on accelerating or focusing to get where he or she wants to be in as short a time as possible.”

The result: Greater Manchester is graduating high school students who are better prepared for the next phase of their educational career.

“We’re hearing very positive things about it,” Huard says. “The Running Start coordinators and college presidents have reached out to colleges and [are] hearing that students really appreciate the fact that they can complete their degree faster, and we are also hearing from some of the receiving colleges that these are very well-prepared students.” n MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 53

ing the design of Manchester High School West, implementing the Multi Grade program at Parker-Varney School and acquiring several 3-D printers at the Middle School at Parkside, are designed to meet that need.

“The biggest concern this community should have is how we are going to prepare the next generation of citizens to function in a highly complex economy and society,” Vargas says. “We need that diversity of thinking to move forward in a way that we can secure the future for our children.”

Last year, the Middle School at Parkside obtained four 3-D printers – one donated by People’s United Bank and three purchased with grant funds. The MakerBot Replicator Plus printers inject plastic filament to create objects based on students’ designs.

The school held an innovation and design contest where students created a design on Tinkercad software and then submitted entries to be rendered on the printer. The students were tasked with redesigning an existing product or creating something new. One student created an adapted device to help people with arthritis to open door handles, while another student used the 3-D printer to create a cupholder extender that expands to create compartments for other items.

Parkside Media Specialist Robin Tafe, who worked with students to learn the new technology, began an after-school program to get kids up to speed.

“I recognize that it is a challenge for them to learn the software on their own,” Tafe says. “But it’s all very exciting, and it’s all right in our backyard. These kids need to know they can do it.”

McLaughlin Middle School Technology Teacher Martha Bernier has also incorporated 3-D printing into her class. Tafe and Bernier troubleshoot issues together and Bernier is currently overseeing a similar contest there.

“I think the kids are getting the idea that our world is changing,” Parkside Principal Forrest Ransdell says of students’ interest in the 3-D printers. “We need to do anything we can to keep up with that change. Manufacturing is going to be dominated by these kinds of processes, and students are setting themselves up to be more successful with job opportunities in the future.”

New approaches are also being put into place at Manchester High School West,

where, Vargas explains, the entire community will become involved. A new design that includes mentorships and partnerships allows students to experience learning opportunities, rather than just talking about them. The chance to explore careers, volunteer and get outside the classroom will illustrate what opportunities exist for them, he says.

And while challenges do exist, the pieces are in place. Vargas says Manchester educators are particularly well-suited to take advantage of important elements – many of them located right in the city.

“I think we are uniquely positioned here in Manchester to provide experiences to our children that no one else can in the state of New Hampshire because we have so much access,” he says. “You have the Art Institute here. You have the Currier Museum. You have the SEE Science Center, hospitals, colleges and universities, you have the Chamber of Commerce and you have banks. What is it that we don’t have?”

And with such assets nearby and innovation underway, Vargas is optimistic.

“In the long run, leadership is about being hopeful,” he says. “You have to take a long-term view when you’re facing challenges in life. I have no doubt this district will be the best district in New England if we work together and take a long-term view.” n
