AC comes to Portsmouth Granite State’s first AC Hotel on target for summer completion New Hampshire’s first AC Hotel by Marriott is on target for a late summer completion as crews from Hooksettbased construction firm Procon finish up exterior installations. The five-story hotel, which features an event center and a rooftop bar, is located at 299 Vaughan St. in Portsmouth, adjacent to the 3S Artspace in the city’s North End.

Turning over a new straw Common Man restaurants switch from plastic to paper straws companywide As part of an international movement to cut down or ban the use of plastic straws, The Common Man family of restaurants in New Hampshire has removed all plastic straws from its restaurants statewide, investing instead in a paper straw alternative for guests. Sean Brown, the almost 50-yearold company’s chief operating officer, said they moved to an ondemand distribution of straws in 2018, giving plastic straws only when guests requested them. In alignment with some of the company’s other environmental initiatives, and to meet guest needs, members of the 6

The 154-room hotel features deluxe double-queen and king guestrooms with a European décor reflected throughout the building. Guest amenities will include a fitness center with a yoga room, a rooftop lounge/bar and deck, a library and a 24/7 market. In addition, the hotel will feature a third-floor, 4,500-square-foot event space and deck for training seminars, weddings and other special occasions. A larger room can be subdivided into smaller meeting rooms for corporate meetings or smaller social functions. In winning approval from the city of Portsmouth, project developers built a nearly one-acre waterfront park that they deeded to the city. The park, which connects the North Mill Pond to the North End, “offers a wonderful environment to the public for recreation along its pathways, boat launch and scenic vistas. “It’s a unique opportunity for the city,” said Jeff Johnston, principal of Cathartes of Boston, which is collaborating on the hotel development with XSS Hotels of Hooksett. Procon, also of Hooksett, is the designer and construction manager of the project.

operations team also investigated other eco-friendly options. In partnership with vendor Central Paper Products Co. Inc. in Manchester, The Common Man decided to use Hoffmaster paper straws, made from Forest Stewardship Council-certified uncoated paper that is FDA food-compliant. The paper straws have replaced all regular beverage and smaller cocktail straws at the 15 Common Man-owned restaurants across New Hampshire as well as the company’s The Flying Monkey Movie House & Performance Center in Plymouth. The Common Man’s sister company at the Hooksett Welcome Centers is exploring options, said Brown. Brown said The Common Man’s move to paper straws increases paper goods costs for the company by about $24,000 annually, but the benefit to the environment and convenience for guests will be the return

for that investment. “We’re focused on doing the right thing on many levels,” said Brown. “Some guests need straws due to dental issues or sensitivity to cold, others just prefer to use a straw with their beverage. This provides an ecofriendly way to meet those needs and preferences.”

Lakes Region college enhances degree and certificate programs Lakes Regions Community College in Laconia has launched a new hotel and restaurant studies degree and certificate program to help meet the hospitality industry’s growing workforce needs. The program was the result of in-depth consultation with leading hospitality and tourism industry leaders and employers in New Hampshire and the region, said Patrick Hall, chair of the college’s hotel, restaurant, and culinary programs, “A strong hospitality industry is fundamental to local, regional and global economic success,” said Hall. “Hotels and restaurants are a large part of this employment field, which, in 2017 was a $8.3 trillion industry and will continue to grow annually, accounting for 10 percent jobs worldwide.” He added that statistics show “increasing career opportunities remains high for qualified supervisor candidates with competitive wages going to those with the right education and work experience.” A 2017 report for the New Hampshire Sector Partnerships Initiative says hospitality is a critical component of the state’s economy, ranking only behind retail trade and healthcare/social assistance in terms of employment. Hall said the program “is strategically designed to be flexible and targeted toward individuals currently employed, recent high school graduates, and veterans wanting to enhance their career opportunities through career development.” Using a co-op/apprenticeship model, classes are coordinated around opportunities for students to learn both in the classroom and in the workplace at partner organizations, giving students both theoretical and practical experience while earning a good wage, said Hall.

At your service Despite its growth, Roedel Companies remains grounded in its New Hampshire roots

T

he hotel business that Fred Roedel started in 1968 began with one motor lodge in Nashua and a vision of providing exceptional guest service and clean, quiet and comfortable accommodations at a great value. The business has evolved over 50 years, but even as the company has branched into new ventures, the focus is still on the customer. Roedel Companies, the hospitality venture established by Roedel and his sons Fred Roedel III and David W. Roedel, is recognized nationally for its diverse portfolio of properties along the East Coast. In fact, the company’s dedication to the guest experience earned it a Hilton Owner Award as Full Service Developer of the Year for Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake, N.Y. But while its reputation is national, Roedel Companies remains grounded in its New Hampshire roots. The hotelier, still headquartered in the same southern New Hampshire town of Wilton where the Roedel family was raised, is committed to serving the growing needs of the Granite State. The company’s decision to open two event centers in 2017 — The Event Center in Nashua and The Falls Event Center in Manchester — came in response to the need it saw in the market along the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border. With four hotel properties in Nashua, Merrimack and Manchester, “we are in a unique 8

position to accommodate a wide variety of groups and events,” says Ed Asvaraksh, corporate director of sales for Roedel. “We have the most rooms to offer between Nashua and Manchester.” To help guests take advantage of its allinclusive offerings, Roedel is establishing a process through which employees of each property understand what the others have to offer and can work together to direct guests to the property that best serves their needs, says Asvaraksh. “We are empowering all employees to solve guest needs that go beyond what can be offered at an individual property,” Asvaraksh says. “Our portfolio provides us the opportunity to deliver exactly what a customer wants.” Each property has its own distinct identity and offerings, he said, ranging from The La

Quinta Inn & Suites and adjacent Falls Event Center at the north end of Manchester’s Millyard to The Courtyard by Marriott and The Event Center in Nashua, The Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Merrimack and The Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Manchester overlooking Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. As the Roedels celebrate 50 years in the hotel industry and serving New Hampshire, David Roedel said he believes the company is able to adjust and grow because of its core values. “We have been proud of the way we have successfully been able to grow and expand our business beyond operating rooms, especially here in New Hampshire,” he says. “But, no matter what services we offer or what properties we build or renovate, being committed to service, our guests and the community remains our priority.”

5 meeting trends to keep an eye on in 2019 Privacy and security of information for guests stands atop Benchmark’s list of 2019 meeting trends Benchmark, a global hospitality company, annually announces its top meeting trends for the coming year, and atop the list for 2019 is one that’s very 21st century: privacy. According to Benchmark, fast and reliable Wi-Fi throughout a property is a must, but planners must insure that Wi-Fi is secure. Privacy and security of information for conference guests is paramount to planners. Not just the content of the meeting, but also the content of participants’ personal communications as well.

10

Rounding out Benchmark’s list:

Trend 2: Food for the soul — Since conference guests tend to be curious and concerned with wellness, learning what food they are putting into their bodies is essential, so they want to come to the table well informed. What they want is food that is fresh and locally sourced, in-season when flavor is most robust, presented in small bites and enjoyed interactively, family style.

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2018

Trend 3: What millennials want — Stateof-the-art technology, multiple plug-ins and USB ports for their myriad of devices in the meeting room, in public spaces and in their guest room underline just a few necessary features the younger generation of professionals expect. They also want entertaining and fun activities on property and outside, non-traditional seating and meeting arrangements to enhance participant engagement throughout the day.

Trend 4: Curated travel — Curated travel for groups (and their spouses/partners) on or off property is of very high importance. So even though groups may want to huddle on property after a day of meetings, companies are urging their employees to get out into the destination for a broader experience.

MEDIA STUDIOS AND COLLABORATIVE WORKSPACE FOR EVENT AND CREATIVE MEDIA PROFESSIONALS

Trend 5: Cocktails and s’mores — The most popular after-hours meetings group scene is gathering around an outdoor fire pit on property, kicking back and relaxing with colleagues over cocktails and s’mores. Absent fire pits, doing something — anything — outdoors and nearby is how today’s meeting participants want to ease into their evening.

Millenials in particular have a new set of needs, from state-of-the-art technology to nontraditional seating arrangements.

A checklist to help make your event accessible Are your events welcoming to people with disabilities?

E

vent planning requires a lot of attention to details, from picking the right venue to making sure the sound system works correctly. Among the most important is one that can be overlooked: how to make sure your event is accessible for all attendees. According to U.S. Census figures, about 20 percent of Americans — or more than 56 million people — have a disability. To make sure you’re holding an inclusive event that’s accessible for people with disabilities here’s a checklist to consider:

12

MEETINGS & CONVENTION PLANNER 2018

• Choose an accessible location

and make sure your event is accessible to attendees who have difficulty walking or who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Doors and hallways must also be wide and tall enough to be safe for people who use mobility devices or have a visual disability.

• Consider how room setup will affect the ability of members with disabilities to navigate the space. If you are planning to break participants into groups or move to another part of the room for any pur-

h

pose, consider whether there will be clear pathways for members to do so.

• Ask attendees upfront if they have special requirements: During the registration process, give people a clear way to share their requirements in a discrete way. While you shouldn’t just rely on these responses to plan for accessibility at your event, this input will help you prepare.

• Present event content accessibly: Make sure that participants with visual disabilities are able to engage in all aspects of presentations and conversations. If you write on a flip chart or show text on PowerPoint slides, make sure to read the text aloud for anyone who cannot see. Similarly, if you are showing pictures, charts or graphics, describe these images out loud. And consider the same advice for audio: ensure that the sound can be heard throughout the session rooms. You can also consider hiring interpreters to stand at the front of presentations.

20 percent of Americans — or 56 million people — have a disability, according to the U.S. Census.

THE MOUNTAIN CLUB ON L

• Make sure to consider things like dining table height, attendee check-in, coffee bars, and exhibits – can attendees sit comfortably, grab collateral easily and serve themselves independently? Also, consider wide aisles, varying heights of countertops and tables, safe lighting, and make sure that accessible elevators are working and your staff is trained to help usher attendees when needed. For speakers, make sure microphone height and podiums are appropriate for everyone’s needs.

• Make sure your internal events team understand accessibility options and how to effectively communicate with attendees who have limited speech or mobility devices.

• Consider the distance and route that members will need to travel between the parking lot, meeting rooms, restrooms, cafeteria or restaurant, and sleeping accommodations, if applicable. Long distances may pose a challenge for some attendees. Determine the amount of time needed for breaks and transitions between spaces based on this distance. The Seven Regions of NH New Hampshire is made up of seven very different regions, each as exciting as the next. The Seacoast, Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee, Lakes Region, Merrimack Valley, Monadnock Region, White Mountains and Great North Woods are filled with natural beauty, cultural events and classic New England living. It’s one family vacation idea after another, and the only way to truly appreciate it all is to see it for yourself. Use the list at left to learn more about each of New Hampshire’s distinct, yet equally unforgettable, regions.

 GREAT NORTH WOODS

 DARTMOUTHLAKE SUNAPEE

Halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, the Great North Woods is at once rugged and inviting. This is where travelers over the centuries have come in search of beauty, adventure and inspiration, while enjoying legendary North Woods hospitality. Here is where you can go take a hike to watch the sunrise before breakfast, go fly fishing after lunch and get dressed up for an elegant dinner at a grand hotel. Whatever your passion, from fine dining to snowmobiling to camping under the stars, the Great North Woods is a destination in which to indulge it.

 WHITE

LAKES REGION

 MONADNOCK REGION

 

 MERRIMACK VALLEY

The Lakes Region: the name alone stirs memories of blissful, sunny days spent on the water, the joy of vacations, boat rides and camp, when everything moved at a slow summer simmer; and you connected with people and places that still resonate within you today. Summer may be the Lakes Region’s best-known season, but wrap the hillsides in spring green, the blazing colors of fall or a thick blanket of snow, and it is every bit as magical. While there are 273 lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region, one lake dominates them all: Lake Winnipesaukee. 14

For the New England of picture books, you need go no further than the Monadnock Region. Here you’ll find small villages where white clapboard churches and town halls edge manicured town greens. Rolling fields with neatly planted rows quilt the hillsides, and country roads lined by rock walls invite exploration at a leisurely pace.

MOUNTAINS If one New Hampshire region is synonymous with recreation, it’s the White Mountains. Forty-eight 4,000 foot peaks are found here, along with the highest mountain in the Northeast, 6,288-foot Mt. Washington; but it is the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest that truly shapes the region.

If only one region of New Hampshire could be known as a study in contrasts, it would be the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region. Named for Dartmouth — Hanover’s Ivy League college — and Sunapee — the crystal clear lake, State Park and mountain, all of the same name — the region includes quiet country roads and rolling farmland, pristine lakes, a bustling hub of higher education and medicine, and some of today’s favorite family activities and recreation.

In New Hampshire, where the capital’s name, Concord, is a synonym for harmony, it’s not surprising to find music and the performing visual arts central to life in the city and the entire Merrimack Valley Region. The state’s three largest cities — Concord, Manchester and Nashua — have an especially rich cultural life, with a variety of offerings year-round.

 SEACOAST New Hampshire’s seacoast captures the essence of New England’s oceanfront. In just 18 miles of coastline, there are long, sandy beaches, working ports, offshore islands, surf-stung rocks, and popular resort towns and villages that date back nearly four hundred years.

Many visitors begin their tours of New Hampshire along the coast, drawn by the sound and scent of the sea, and intrigued by all the region offers.
