Affordability is our priority. College is an investment in your future, but it’s an investment not every family can afford. That’s why the University of New Hampshire at Manchester offers scholarships, grants and financial aid programs that help make college possible for students. – Ten Reasons –

To Love GREaTER MANCHESTER 3

Greater Manchester has a sound, a flavor and a rhythm that makes it a dynamic, exciting place to be. And while it’s challenging to whittle down the list of its many attributes, we managed to come up with 10 reasons why it’s easy to love living, working and playing in Greater Manchester.

It’s a city of opportunity.

Manchester is a community where young people can make a difference. Sure, it’s got career opportunities, great cultural outlets and plenty of places to have fun, but young professionals also find a deeper purpose here. It’s a city where you can be someone and make an impact.

4 1

It’s a city where you can put down roots.

Ask the business owners — who could locate anywhere — why they call Manchester home. They’ll cite the ability to recruit top talent (thanks to many of the reasons on this list), the businessfriendly atmosphere or the support of their neighbors. In the end, it’s a place pioneers, disruptors and creators want to call home.

Location, location, location.

It’s all about access. Living in Greater Manchester puts you within reach of the world — whether it’s through Manchester-Boston Regional Airport or the nearby highways and transit system. Or, if you want to visit the mountains, the seacoast or go skiing, hiking or boating, it’s a geographically ideal location.

6

5

Take your education higher.

With apologies to our neighbor just to the south, Manchester is a college town. Southern New Hampshire University, University of New Hampshire at Manchester, Saint Anselm, Manchester Community College, the Institute of Art and Design at New England College and others all make our city a vibrant, exciting place to plan the path to your future.

It’s a big city with a small-town vibe.

Need to know what’s going on? Stop in at the Red Arrow Diner or pick up an order from the Puritan Backroom. It’s there you’ll find your neighbors, coworkers and friends chatting while chowing. Manchester has all the benefits and amenities of a city with the everyday networking of a small town. Longtime residents who have been here for generations rub elbows with new neighbors to create a tight-knit community that benefits from its diverse population.

2

You won’t have to look far for inspiration.

The innovator you met during a pitch meeting at noon may be the person behind you in line at the café later in the day. A community made up of trailblazers and motivated trendsetters keeps the city in the national spotlight, and the ideas flowing.

7

You can shop like a pro.

From the big box stores at the Mall of New Hampshire, the scores of stores along South Willow to the locally owned shops on Elm Street — and every avenue and byway between — you won’t have to go far to find what you need. And a friendly reminder — it’s tax-free.

9

Fill ‘er up.

The Queen City’s reputation as a foodie’s paradise is well known. We’ve got something for every taste — Italian, Thai, Greek, Brazilian, and some of the best bakeries, cafes, pizza shops, burger spots, seafood, steakhouses and pubs in the northeast. Manchester is a lot of things — and a top-notch dining destination is among its best-known.

8

Keep a full calendar year-round.

10

It’s home.

Find your forever home in Greater Manchester. Choose from single-family homes, renovated mill lofts, high-rise condos or even innovative micro apartments. Once you’ve put down your roots, you’ve got endless amenities, cultural offerings, volunteer opportunities, educational outlets, health care options and natural resources at your fingertips.

Festivals and events fill our streets year-round. Holiday markets, kids’ fairs, artisan expos, brewfests, agricultural gatherings, foliage celebrations and the best St. Patrick’s Day parade in the region keep your dance card full year-round. And don’t miss the World’s Largest Taco Tour.

Rising Tide T h e re’ s a

Region Builds Momentum to Attract Young Professionals When Julia Whitney began looking around for a place to put down roots during college, she spent some time in Boston and then Washington, D.C. Eventually, however, she found herself taking advantage of a wide range of resources and opportunities she and other young professionals have discovered in the state’s largest city. Manchester, she says, offers a distinct combination of professional connections and cultural outlets that attracted her — and others like her.

Julia Whitney, chair of the Manchester Young Professionals Advisory Council, and Sean Foote, vice chair, are among the growing population of young professionals choosing to make Manchester their home. (Photos by Kendal J. Bush)

Will Stewart, executive director of Stay, Work, Play New Hampshire — a group that works to attract and retain young people in the state.

“Coming back here just felt like home,” Whitney says. “There were a lot of great opportunities, and the networks you build here are unlike anywhere else I had been. You meet someone getting coffee one morning and the next day you’re in a meeting with them. Manchester is unique in that way.” Whitney is the marketing and retention specialist in the Manchester Economic Development office and advisory council chair for the Manchester Young Professionals (MYP) — a program of the Greater Manchester Chamber that creates business and social opportunities

and supports professional development for young professionals in greater Manchester. She grew up in nearby Hudson, but was drawn to Manchester for a number of reasons, including how it has embraced new technology. “I think the emergence of the Millyard, in particular, shows that the city is on the front line of innovation,” she says. “When you have that kind of industry in Manchester, you see it’s a really cool, creative place to be. You wouldn’t have thought 10 years ago that the Millyard would be filled with such innovative companies giving these opportunities to

young professionals, but here they are.” Sean Foote, the 28-year-old supply chain manager at the family-owned Transupport, Inc., and Advisory Council vice chair at MYP, says there’s a friendly sense of competition among creatives and entrepreneurs to see who can bring more to the table. “Everyone wants to bring themselves back to Manchester,” he says. “You see it with places like Shoppers — the restaurant the Yorks are bringing to Manchester. (See related feature, page 32.) Everyone is looking to make the city better based on how well they’re doing, to improve it one way or another. “There’s room and motivation for the next big thing. It’s a healthy competition based on who can make Manchester better. There’s a rising tide and it’s lifting all boats.” Originally from Bedford, Foote spent his college years in Rhode Island. When it came time to find something more permanent after graduating from Bryant University in 2013, he found himself working in the family business in Merrimack, but looking to Manchester for a place to live. “There are more areas to play and enjoy yourself and have fun and socialize,” he says. “Whereas that’s not necessarily the case in nearby towns. I went to high school in Manchester, I grew up playing hockey there my whole life, and Manchester is close enough where it’s an easy commute to work.” It’s also a strong region from which to build a career. Access to a talented workforce and professional networks make it an attractive option for young professionals. “Manchester is on the up-and-up,” Foote says. “There are so many businesses flocking here, in general. Young professionals are keeping their eyes open and seeing that. Why would big companies move to Manchester if it wasn’t a good option for them? There’s so much potential with so many up-andcoming businesses thriving around here.”

16 MANCHESTER MAGAZINE www.manchester-chamber.org

“Manchester is big enough where you can have a critical mass of people you can collaborate with, but it’s small enough where one person can make a difference — unlike many larger cities where you’d be one of millions. Here, you’re somebody and you matter.” While it’s known for having many of the amenities that attract young professionals — it’s geographically ideal for traveling between Boston, the seacoast and the mountains — it also has a thriving community of people who work on behalf of others. “Over and beyond the typical things, Manchester is a place where young people, in particular, can really make a difference,” says Will Stewart, executive director of Stay, Work, Play New Hampshire — a group that works to attract and retain young people in the state. “It’s something that’s important to young people, not just in New Hampshire. They

want to make an impact. “Manchester is big enough where you can have a critical mass of people you can collaborate with, but it’s small enough where one person can make a difference — unlike many larger cities where you’d be one of millions. Here, you’re somebody and you matter.” There are challenges, however. The demand for housing — both rental and housing for sale — outstrips the availability, according to Dean Christon, executive director of the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority. “Because Manchester has a really strong downtown environment now, it’s

a place people — particularly younger people — would like to live,” Christon says. “And when they’re coming into the city, they’re being challenged because there isn’t the same broad range of housing options available in other urban environments, though there is some movement in that area.” A number of developers in the city are providing smaller apartments and converting spaces into one-bedroom apartments designed to serve the needs of younger households and workers. Among them is the Flats at Hanover Commons — a collection of 32 miniapartments in a refurbished four-story brick building at the corner of Hanover and Union Streets, adjacent to Bronstein Park. Apartments range from 280 to 712 square feet. They’re all set up with luxury amenities and designed to make the most of the smaller spaces. “People are interested in smaller housing units closer to where they work, closer to amenities and closer to services,” Christon says. “People like to be able to walk to destinations as much as they can. They want to be able to ride a bike to where they’re going. These things are attractive to younger households.” And while the market is tight, the underlying reason may be a positive one. “The good news is there’s a strong housing demand because there’s a strong economy,” Christon says. “We need to recognize that’s a good thing. The question is how do we respond to that to work together to provide options and opportunities to get these young professionals here and keep them here.” According to Foote, it’s an environment ripe for enterprising young professionals. “If you put the time in, you see the value in this city,” he says. “The juice is worth the squeeze. You can be the master of your own change if you want to put in the hard work. You can start small in this town, work your way up and really affect things.” ▪

Whitney and Foote are part of Manchester Young Professionals — an initiative of the Greater Manchester Chamber, which works to engage, educate and empower young professionals and emerging leaders.

Growing Businesses Call Queen City Home A cross-section of entrepreneurs and business owners large and small have chosen to make Manchester their professional home. Among them: Shopper’s Pub + Eatery Manager Lauren LaCava Bibbo (top left), Travis York (above), president and CEO of GYK Antler and Diane Crespo, artist and owner of Diane Crespo Fine Art. (Photos by Kendal J. Bush)

www.manchester-chamber.org

When you run a successful, in-demand, independent, full-service marketing agency, you can set up shop anywhere you like. For Travis York, president and CEO of GYK Antler, there couldn’t be a better location than his innovative, eye-popping offices at the 7-20-4 Cigar Building in the Manchester Millyard. “I was born and raised in southern New Hampshire, and I’ve always ascribed to the ‘live free or die’ philosophy,” York says. “We have an independence and we chart our own path by being creative and disruptive. This city embodies a lot of that.” Founded in 1975, the agency that would become GYK Antler has a long history — and it’s always had a presence in Manchester. “The people have a grit and level of determination and when you can pull creativity out of them, it doesn’t compare to anywhere else, frankly,” York says. Its offices in the 7-20-4 Cigar Building feature exposed brick and beams and HVAC with wood, metal and glass highlights. It’s a mix of old and new, which suits the agency’s mission perfectly — respecting clients’ heritage while modernizing them for today’s consumers. “There’s a lot of quality and craft infused into our physical space,” York says. “It’s a space people can be creative in.” It’s a growing trend. Startups, industry disruptors and major employers who are expanding are all choosing to make Manchester their home. “In the past, Southern New Hampshire has had poor self-esteem,” York says. “But I’ve seen confidence building around here, because a lot of folks have taken matters into their own hands to make a difference — whether it’s starting a business or buying a business or playing on a bigger scale.” York sums up the city’s collective ethos this way: “Local heart, national reach.” “I think technology has enabled this to happen,” he says. “I think that people have put their heads down and worked to help make Manchester a thriving community.” MANCHESTER MAGAZINE 33

Travis York, president and CEO of GYK Antler, says it’s important for him to be located in a vital city like Manchester as it goes through a reinvention in the creative and technology sectors.

York points out that the city has reinvented itself several times over the years. “Manchester, on more than one occasion, has been the global epicenter of something,” he says. “I think we’re coming through another period of reinvention in the technology and creativity centers, and we’re continuing to flourish.” A number of major employers have set up shop in the Queen City, including high-profile health care providers like Elliot Hospital, Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield and Catholic Medical Center — which, combined, employ nearly 7,000 people — and higher education and financial institutions like Southern New Hampshire University, Saint Anselm College (nearly 3,000 employees combined) and firms like Eversource, Consolidated Communications, Comcast and TD Bank. And now, BAE Systems has announced it will expand its electronic warfare business into Manchester by opening a 200,000square-foot facility. When BAE’s expansion into Manchester was announced, Mayor Joyce Craig said in a statement, “This is an exciting addition to our city’s high-tech sector and proves Manchester is the perfect

“I was born and raised in southern New Hampshire, and I’ve always ascribed to the ‘live free or die’ philosophy,” York says. “We have an independence and we chart our own path by being creative and disruptive. This city embodies a lot of that.” place for businesses to grow and thrive.” BAE officials cited the city’s growth and convenient access to other parts of the state as reasons Manchester provided a perfect location. With a number of colleges and universities either in the city or nearby, the company will also have access to an educated, trained workforce. It’s not just major employers who are flocking to Manchester, however. Smaller entrepreneurs are finding the city’s downtown the perfect spot to set up shop. “It’s been so great to be here,” says Diane Crespo, artist and owner of Diane Crespo Fine Art at 32 Hanover St. “I’ve felt so incredibly welcomed since coming here. People come in and tell me they live or work in Manchester

and thank me for opening up. It feels like home, here.” Crespo had an art studio in Portsmouth, N.H., for two years, but chose to move to Manchester and opened the doors to her comfortable space in April. “I wanted to be closer to home and to see if I could bring a little bit of that Portsmouth feel to Manchester,” she says. “The space opened up and it’s been perfect. I’m in a street-level space in a great area right on Hanover Street. We’re right near the Palace Theatre, there are great restaurants nearby, we’re not far from the Currier Museum of Art — it’s become the artsy section of Manchester.” The 900-square-foot gallery is brightly lit with high ceilings, assorted angles and large windows that look out onto the

street, providing great views of Crespo’s oils, pastels, landscapes, painted glassware and slates. Crespo took a few years off from her art to raise a family, but immersed herself in it more than a dozen years ago. “I don’t want to sound cliché, but it’s something I’ve probably been doing my whole life,” she says. “I ended up at the Institute of Art and Design at New England College, formerly known as the New Hampshire Institute of Art, so this (area) is kind of my old stomping grounds” Crespo cites the welcoming vibe of the city as one deciding factor, and says the more reasonable rent also helped her to make the move away from the Seacoast. “I also wanted to get back into teaching,” she says. “Older students come in and take classes from me here, and that really made an impact. One of the main reasons I’m here is because I wanted to get back into teaching a little bit more. Now I’ve got a small work area where I can teach and paint or do my framing. It’s bigger than the space I had in Portsmouth, and it’s really exactly what I needed.” For generations, if anyone in the Greater Manchester area needed a baseball glove, running shoes, uniforms or a batting helmet, they’d turn to Don and Gail York at Indian Head Athletics in the city’s downtown. Until last summer, that is, when the shop — which called the Queen City home for more than 40 years — closed when its owners went into muchdeserved retirement. However, the family of entrepreneurs who owned and operated the shop wasn’t going anywhere. Less than a year after closing the doors at the Lake Avenue destination, it reopened — this time as a sportsthemed restaurant called Shopper’s Pub + Eatery. Since firing up the kitchen last spring, the revived eatery has become known for its pizza, burgers, wings, a top-notch Reuben, and marinated steak tips (created by the family’s “evil food genius” Robert Gentile) that have been on the Waltham, Mass., Shopper’s menu for more than 25 years. “We like to describe ourselves as a neighborhood pub,” Manager Lauren LaCava Bibbo says. “It’s simple food but we make sure we do it right and we do it well.” And anyone with a sentimental connection to Indian Head Athletics will be happy to see a few throwback artifacts watching over the dining room. It’s both www.manchester-chamber.org

a nod to the destination the Yorks built, and an acknowledgement that Shopper’s Pub + Eatery is here to stay. “Manchester is so up and coming,” says LaCava Bibbo. “People want good things for Manchester, and we wanted to be part of that.” The former owners’ son, Kyle York, went to college with Joey LaCava, the fourth generation of the LaCava family to run Shopper’s Café in Waltham. When the location became available and the timing was appropriate, Kyle York teamed up with the LaCava family to bring that location’s success (and its renowned steak tip marinade) to Manchester. “We always joked that when Kyle’s parents retired, we’d open a Shopper’s in Manchester,” LaCava Bibbo says. “Well,

Don and Gail retired and it wasn’t a joke anymore. We came up with a plan, and here we are.” Once it was decided that expansion was in the works, the location was never in question: It could only be Manchester. “Opening the restaurant here, from start to finish, has been a great process,” LaCava Bibbo says. “Any city or state department that we had to go through — if I had any questions — everyone was so helpful and welcoming and eager to help us get started. It made everything so much easier.” The ease of setting up shop allowed the families to refurbish, set up and launch the eatery on schedule. “It was a great feeling knowing the community was behind us and that everyone wanted us to succeed,” LaCava Bibbo says of the welcome she and her family received when they opened the Lake Avenue restaurant. “From the police to the fire to the health department and the Liquor Commission — everybody has been great.” As for predicting the future, Travis York sees things continuing on the upswing. “It’s a thriving community,” he says. “The downtown office space is full, there’s residential living here now, there are a lot more restaurants and bars than ever before — the community has a lot of energy. “It’s become much more cool and desirable to have offices in downtown Manchester. I certainly think our thriving business community is driving that cultural shift.” ▪

It’s a Dynamic City Local Organizations Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship It’s just after dark on a Monday night, and a warm glow is coming from inside the mill building on Old Granite Street. The industrial sound of a welding torch cuts through the back-and-forth conversation drifting onto the street just outside. That ambient soundtrack, provided by the entrepreneurs and creatives inside, is a constant at the weekly open house at Manchester Makerspace — a volunteer-based, member-run shared workshop for innovators of all kinds. A gathering place for creators to learn, share and build, this workshop/innovation lab has grown into a community of like-minded creative types who have the urge to develop and discover. “It’s like a health club for geeks,” says Manchester Makerspace founder Steve Korzyniowski, laughing. “It’s for people who want to pursue their hobbies, pay a monthly fee, use tools, take classes and learn how to do things. It’s for people who want to work with their hands.” Manchester Makerspace is just one of the organizations helping to foster a community of entrepreneurial innovation in the Queen City. With technology spanning virtually every industry in some capacity, Manchester has become a www.manchester-chamber.org

welcoming destination for businesses looking to disrupt, accelerate and succeed. “I see Manchester as a fantastic place for businesses to come to,” Korzyniowski says. “Look at this area — it’s an hour from just about anything you’d want. It’s a very dynamic city.” That enterprising spirit is often on display in the downtown Manchester workshop — a volunteer-based, member-run facility whose mission is to encourage collaboration and provide a chance to learn, develop and share skills. Nearly four years after opening, it’s developed into a thriving community of innovators and builders who embody the entrepreneurial spirit the Queen City has become known for. Korzyniowski, a mechanical engineer and third generation Manchester native, says much of the technological growth in the city can be traced to innovators like Jeremy Hitchcock (Dyn, Minim) and Dean Kamen (DEKA, ARMI), and a resulting sense of homegrown entrepreneurship. It’s a community the Makerspace is helping to curate. The facility, located in one of the city’s historic mill buildings on Old Granite

Street, provides members with access to automotive, electronic, woodworking, metalworking and rapid prototyping facilities. “People come to our Monday night open house and think, ‘cool, I can come in here 24/7 and do whatever I want?’ And that’s exactly what it is — they come in and do their thing. Right now there are people who come in and work overnight. I come in during the daytime and see what they’ve accomplished.” Each space has a resource manager responsible for making sure the equipment is maintained and that members are prepared to use it properly. “There’s a community there,” says Korzyniowski. “It’s part of a really nice cultural thing that’s happening — Jupiter Hall, the Bookery, the things the York family are doing — it’s all blending together to make Manchester better.” Korzyniowski (whose mother coincidentally worked as a parachute maker in the 1940s in the same Waumbec mills where the Makerspace is located today) routinely reaches out to local organizations to help expand the Manchester Makerspace base of experts, volunteers and equipment and to build bridges MANCHESTER MAGAZINE 45

between organizational silos. One of the organization’s consistent partners has been the New Hampshire Tech Alliance, whose new executive director, Julie Demers, sees a growing momentum in the state, and in Manchester, in particular. “I think there is a sense of community around entrepreneurs in this state,” Demers says. “From what I’ve seen, this is a very supportive network of people. These networks will build strong foundations that will result in successful entrepreneurs wanting to reinvest in the communities that fostered their success. “Behind every successful entrepreneur is a network of people that probably helped them get there. I think these networks and opportunities are uniquely strong in New Hampshire and Manchester specifically.” The result: young people are sensing the opportunity. New Hampshire was recently ranked No. 10 in the nation for in-migration of Millennials, according to a report by SmartAsset. New Hampshire was the only state in the northeast ranked in the top 10, and Manchester was the only city to rank in the top 25. “The beauty of this is that it contradicts the common misconception that this is an aging state,” Demers says. “Younger talent tends to be less risk-averse and more willing to take a leap and start something new and exciting. I think the city has been pretty responsive to the needs of Millennials but also — and probably more importantly — Gen Z.” Part of the reason, Demers says, is that Manchester has experienced a shift in awareness. The city has made a name for itself thanks to a string of high-profile, high-tech successes like Dyn/Oracle, ARMI and PillPack, among others. It makes the city, and its resources, seem within reach. She cites benefits like accessibility to mentors, legislators, a good quality of life and capital — without the “terrifying” price tag, allowing entrepreneurs to be smarter with investments. “It’s the relative affordability and the opportunity to have a bigger impact on the overall economic development of the city through close working relationships with other businesses and policymakers that you just wouldn’t be able to have in larger cities,” Demers says. “Tech company founders and their employees have an opportunity to get engaged on a deeper more meaningful level in this city.” Yet it’s not just tech that’s driving innovation in Manchester. Colin Van Ostern, chief operating officer at Alumni Ventures Group, which focuses entirely on entrepreneurial and startup sectors of business 46 MANCHESTER MAGAZINE www.manchester-chamber.org

growth, says that on its own, Manchester has built a strong track record in knowledge-economy growth ventures. It’s important, he says, to see Manchester as part of a larger ecosystem. “There’s a strong biotech startup sector that extends from the HanoverLebanon area an hour northwest of us to the seacoast an hour east to the 128corridor around Boston,” Van Ostern says. “There’s also a quieter concentration of defense-industry startups around BAE in southern New Hampshire. And in the three Northern New England states, to which Manchester is the gateway city, there is a strong network of B-corporations and mission-driven consumer brands such as Stonyfield, Badger, Seventh Generation, Timberland, Alagash Brewery, Pete & Gerry’s Eggs, Ben & Jerry’s, and more.” Like others, Van Ostern cites the city’s advantageous location as an important factor for its success. And while the ‘extraordinary benefit’ of the quality of life is important, there are other elements to its success. Manchester, he points out, is the same distance to Boston as Silicon Valley is to San Francisco. A low cost of living can mean a lower burn rate for a startup. Another plus: Access www.manchester-chamber.org

“Behind every successful entrepreneur is a network of people that probably helped them get there. I think these networks and opportunities are uniquely strong in New Hampshire and Manchester specifically.” to the outdoor environment in New Hampshire matters significantly to many — particularly Millennials and Gen-Z workers. The proximity to colleges and universities is tremendous, proving that it isn’t an accident that Manchester has built a strong competency in building knowledge-economy growth ventures. Additionally, New Hampshire is one of the best-educated states in the nation in terms of percentage of population with a college degree. “It’s also worth remembering that real disruptive innovation — not just breakthrough innovation, but the creation of new markets and the translation of non-consumers into consumers — tends to follow a unique pattern,” Van Ostern says. “Among other things, markets tend to be disrupted from below, not above, and from outside, not inside. So there’s real value in being a step outside the

bubble of Boston or San Francisco, but still connected to them.” It’s a location Kyle York found to be ideal when he launched his newest venture, York IE, recently. The company’s mission: to work closely with entrepreneurs and angel investors to help them realize their shared ambition to build companies, create jobs, grow generational wealth and impact the world. As CEO and managing partner, York — one of the architects who helped build Dyn when it first moved to Manchester and a member of the entrepreneurial York family — was once told that unless he moved out west (to Silicon Valley) he would not succeed. His message to that person now: rethink that philosophy. “Those kinds of statements are absolute fuel for entrepreneurs with MANCHESTER MAGAZINE 47

ambition,” York says. “I do believe you can build a great company and a great career anywhere. We need to be loud and proud. What you’re seeing can be built anywhere — Boulder, Portland, Oregon, Seattle — these places were built over time and on the backs of successful people who came before.” Leaders in the city’s business community have also played a key role in the growing success of startups

and entrepreneurs, according to York. (Greater Manchester Chamber President and CEO) Mike Skelton is “a friend of technology and innovation,” he says, helping to drive policy, and being supportive through programming, events and outlets to talk about that success. “The Chamber deserves a tremendous amount of credit,” York says. Additionally, the revitalization and infrastructure of the Millyard has created an environment where startups and tech companies can thrive, says York IE Managing Partner Joe Raczka. Raczka, who was also part of the influential Dyn team, saw that growth first-hand. “A lot of thought and care went into building the ecosystem in Manchester,” Raczka says. “There were differing opinions on whether we moved fast enough, but now we can see that all the roots and the foundations are there for it to be something very special.” The other fundamental element is the access to the talent pool in the greater Manchester area, York IE Managing Partner Adam Coughlin says. In addition to new companies being built here, there are companies based outside of New Hampshire who are spinning off and opening marketing, engineering and other offices in the city because they want access to that talent pool. “The Silicon Valley seeds were planted

in the 1950s,” Coughlin says. “It took a long period of time for Silicon Valley to grow into what it is today. We’re seeing a lot of those steps happening here.” It all boils down to a simple message, Van Ostern says: “Manchester offers a great sweet spot. We’re part of one of the most active innovation ecosystems in the world, but we’re just far enough from the bubble to help you keep your feet on the ground and build something real — all with the best quality of life in the country.” ▪

making a future

Accelerated SNHU Program Ideal for Working Adults Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has created a program where students aren’t forced to decide between earning a living or a degree. Duet, a nonprofit that partners closely with SNHU, helps working adults earn college degrees more quickly and affordably than they could otherwise, without having to cut back at work. “Most people attending college today are doing so to earn a better job as a result but can’t stop working or cut back while they earn their degree,” says Khaleel Shreet, senior coach and director of Duet’s New Hampshire program. “The way typical colleges are designed can make it challenging for a working adult to earn their degree in a timely fashion and there is often a lack of support to translate that degree into a better job. “ Here’s how it works: Students enroll, choose an accredited

degree from SNHU and begin an “on-demand” college model, allowing them to complete as many credits per semester as they want. The more work completed, the sooner the student graduates and the less he or she pays. Meanwhile, coaches work with the participant from enrollment to financial aid to academics. “We pair this with wraparound coaching services from enrollment to job attainment and other student support services like childcare and transportation support that we know are instrumental in helping working adults earn their degrees quickly,” Shreet says. Duet was founded in partnership with SNHU in early 2014, and it’s doubled in size every year since. The Manchester program was launched in early 2018. Since then, 10 Manchester students have graduated, and 40 students are

currently enrolled. More than 200 students have earned associate and bachelor’s degrees from SNHU through Duet. Shreet, who moved from Syria to the U.S. six years ago, worked for SNHU for four years before joining the program. He was part of the team that first worked to create the competency-based degrees. “Duet coaches work one-on-one with students to support them at every stage of their journey from applying for financial aid and enrolling at SNHU to supporting them as they complete their coursework and helping them acquire higher quality jobs while they are enrolled and after they graduate,” he says. “As the director of our New Hampshire program, I’m also working to grow our work in Manchester through partnerships with community leaders who realize the critical role of higher education as a gateway to economic mobility and advancement.

programs, and award graduates the same nationally recognized SNHU diplomas. In our experience, students are learning even more because they are held to the same high standard of ‘mastering’ work but are given the flexibility to do it in the time frame and on the schedule that works in their life.”

“We pair this with wraparound coaching services from enrollment to job attainment and other student support services like childcare and transportation support that we know are instrumental in helping working adults earn their degrees quickly,” Shreet says. “Our work with Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig, the YWCA and the Greater Manchester Chamber are exciting indications about the commitment to creating more opportunities for working adults in the community.” Duet offers access to several SNHU associate and bachelor’s degrees that are in high demand and give a competitive advantage in the market. Degrees in business, communications and health care management are offered. It’s also set apart from the traditional college experience because Duet is a competencybased program based around skills that are workplace-relevant. We asked Shreet to tell us about some of the elements that make Duet a unique and advantageous choice for greater Manchester working adults. Who is Duet for? Shreet: “SNHU’s Duet program is open to all greater Manchester residents who want to earn a college degree and who have a www.manchester-chamber.org

high school diploma or GED or an associate degree and want to pursue a bachelor’s. Duet and SNHU are a great fit for anyone who wants a more affordable college option, wants to earn their degree quickly or will be going to school while working.”

Who are the coaches and what do they do? Shreet: “Duet Academic Coaches are success experts who regularly meet with students one-onone, remotely and in-person, to motivate and guide them throughout their academic journey. Coaches hold students accountable for their success and partner with them to strategize goals, preview courses, facilitate access to learning resources, and help prevent and solve any barriers that may potentially disrupt their progress. “Duet Career Coaches are professional and employment experts who personalize their services to help students find a meaningful next job opportunity, decode confusing job descriptions, and understand how to leverage their unique set of experiences to compete effectively in the job market. They also utilize Duet’s growing network of employers to help students find the ‘right fit’ during enrollment and after graduation.”

What makes a competency-based program different? Shreet: “Our programs are competency-based (CBE) and are innovatively designed by SNHU to ensure our graduates are fully prepared to tackle future employment opportunities. CBE means students are only judged by their ability to demonstrate learning outcomes, not by how much time they spend learning. This eliminates “failure” as students can flexibly continue to revise their work, utilizing Duet support and SNHU professors’ guidance, until they meet their class expectations. Above all the advantages, these programs still have the same high-level accreditation as the rest of SNHU MANCHESTER MAGAZINE 51

students pay in all the ways they would any other school including federal financial aid, loans, tuition reimbursement, etc. Students also benefit because there is no limit to how many credits they can earn each term meaning that a motivated student can finish their degree sooner and pay less by completing more work each term they are enrolled.”

Lunch and dinner is included? Shreet: “Like the rest of our services, lunch and dinner during our coaching sessions is not need-based and is available to all students. These services help our busy students make time in their lives to come and meet with us and get work done, whether that means providing a Lyft, childcare, food, coffee, laptop or just a supportive working space.”

committed. Upon enrollment, Duet students have access to all other services, including inperson academic and career coaching (anytime, anywhere), free resources for classes, 24/7 unlimited online tutoring and writing support, along with convenient access to our center and SNHU campus library. We enroll new students every two months throughout the year.”

When do students begin to benefit from Duet? Shreet: “Duet services start even before enrollment, where interested individuals have access to one-on-one info sessions, academic and financial consultation, free financial aid and SNHU application supports, and two weeks to try the curriculum at no cost before they are

Can financial aid be applied to Duet? Is it handled differently than traditional enrollment? Shreet: “Students are enrolled with SNHU and benefit from the lowcost nature of these degrees. At only $7,000 per year (all inclusive — no books or other charges!) it is the most affordable way of going to college. SNHU is an accredited, private, liberal arts college and so

How does this align with SNHU’s philosophy? Shreet: “According to Paul LeBlanc, president of SNHU, ‘The higher ed system that we have today is not built for the challenges we’re facing. The majority of college students we need to serve are non-traditional students who don’t live on a residential campus with the classic, stereotypical college experience.’ SNHU’s innovation stems from the urgency to design programs that work for the modern college student. While SNHU currently enrolls over 135,000 students around the world, its mission remains to get closer to local communities in many channels including the work we do at Duet. We know there are many hardworking adults in New Hampshire that would benefit from a college degree but need a more flexible way of earning it; that’s why we, at Duet, find our partnership with SNHU in the Manchester Area highly promising. We are committed to making this an exceptional opportunity to offer our Manchester community a reliable path to college education and economic advancement.” ▪

Health Care From advanced neonatal care to stateof-the art heart surgery, the Greater Manchester medical community provides a degree of sophistication that is unusual in an area its size. The region is served by four major health facilities, an extensive new outpatient medical facility, walk-in clinics and more than 700 licensed physicians affiliated with Manchester’s two hospitals alone. These facilities and private practices are supplemented by a network of nonprofit health services organizations. In the past few years, many private practices, HMOs and clinics expanded or relocated to the area.
