Getting to know Greater Merrimack Come discover a tight-knit community at the center of the modern global economy and small-town New England history
The Community Southern New Hampshire is home to Merrimack — a community with a unique combination of economic opportunity, natural beauty and the sort of small-town charm that attracts growing families, enthusiastic young professionals and wide-eyed visitors from across the country. In Merrimack, picturesque parks, pristine waters and stunning forest vistas are at your fingertips, as are the professional opportunities made possible by a rapidly growing community that’s adapted on the fly to thrive as a part of the evolving, expanding regional and global economies. Merrimack is home to a flourishing group of technology companies, a colorful roster of restaurants serving deliciously varied cuisine, and the sort of effortless natural beauty that keeps visitors returning annually and residents here for a lifetime. Come discover what’s here!
The History The town of Merrimack, in southern New Hampshire’s Hillsborough County, was created on April 2nd, 1746, when Governor Benning Wentworth signed a charter establishing the land from Pennichuck Brook
to the Souhegan River as the Town of Merrymac. Less than 50 families lived here then, and Pawtucket, Nashuaway and Penacook Indians camped along the banks of the Merrimack and Souhegan Rivers. In the beginning, there were few stores and no schools, and industry consisted of saw and grist mills. Most Merrimack residents were farmers. Since then, the town has undergone an explosion of development and advancement, with population increasing to more than 27,000. Town facilities have seen significant shifts, with new schools and colleges constructed, a one-time volunteer fire department replaced by a full-time force with three fire stations, and the police department expanding and modernizing. The larger community has seen an evolution, too. Farms were replaced by developments, apartments and condominiums. Industry came to focus on manufacturers of paper products, furniture and electronics. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery opened in 1970, including a paddock for the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. Many larger stores and shopping malls, including the Merrimack Premium Outlets, were built along Route 3 and on Route 101A. Merrimack keeps on changing — for the better!

A Merrimack Walkabout Town’s trail system offers diverse environments, challenges
I
t’s an early Wednesday evening, and Matt Caron is maneuvering his mountain bike along a winding, rolling trail through the Horse Hill Nature Preserve — something he can be found doing most days, rain or shine. It’s part of a routine that Caron, a member of the Merrimack Conservation Commission and the town’s Trail Builder, began years ago. “I started riding my bike and walking my dog in the Horse Hill Nature Preserve shortly after I moved to town,” says Caron, who found himself drawn to the natural surroundings. “It’s a very big piece of open space. Shortly after going out there a number of times, I knew that I wanted to get involved to improve the trail system, because the trails were good but there was so much space. With 560-something acres, there was just space for more trails and better trails.” From winding pathways that twist circuitously through wooded forests to rolling trails that skirt brooks and ponds, the trail system that weaves through Merrimack offers a plentiful and diverse natural outlet for anyone hoping to immerse themselves

And it all springs from a group of enthusiasts who keep the town’s trails in excellent condition. “When I started going out there, there were probably seven miles of trails,” he says. “We started working on and adding trails and improving the trails that were there, and now there are about 14 miles of trails out there. There’s another area where the town purchased a bit more land on Greens Pond Road, so now there’s another place that’s got another 6-7 miles of trails at Wasserman Park.” As Merrimack’s trail system grew more robust, increasing numbers of people took to the woods for a variety of reasons. Initially, Horse Hill saw more hikers, dog walkers and people taking part in geocaching — hunting for and finding hidden objects by using GPS coordinates found on a website. (“There’s a lot of geocache hidden in Horse Hill and now in Wasserman Park,” Caron says.) The effort, according to the seven-year member of the Conservation Commission, has been worth it.
“All of the trail systems get a lot of use, and I think now people don’t feel that they have to go to the White Mountains to get some hiking in,” Caron says. “The trails are getting a lot more use than they did when I first started using them 10 years ago. You could go out there and you could be alone and not see another person. Now, it’s rare to be out there and not see somebody.” While Caron and the town’s 10-member Conservation Commission oversee the trail system, there is a network of volunteers who get out into the woods to maintain, curate and improve the existing trails. “There have been a lot of people who put a lot of time into the trail systems,” Caron says. “Each big parcel, like Horse Hill, Grater Woods and Wildcat Falls, they have subcommittees — anywhere between 5-10 people that are the pulse of that trail system. They’re out there doing work, installing signs. Every intersection you come to, there’s a sign post that tells you what trail you’re on and what trail you’ll be entering. On all the parking lots there are kiosks with map boxes where you can grab a map.”

Pool Party
Exploring the unknown world of Merrimack’s vernal pools A group of students spread out around a small pool of murky water in the woods out behind Merrimack Middle School as Jeff Littleton takes a long step and wades right in. He bends low into the water, fishing around with a small dipping net, before standing and displaying his catch — a small clutch of Fairy Shrimp. The tiny crustaceans are just one of the many forms of life that take advantage of the vernal pools that dot the Merrimack landscape — this one, in particular just behind the school in Grater Woods. “Generally, vernal pools are really small — maybe a quarter of an acre, sometimes larger, sometimes smaller, but they’re really important,” Littleton, a principle ecologist at Moosewood Ecological says. Vernal pools are small bodies of water that provide a necessary habitat for plants and animals — and they’re a perfect chance for Littleton to teach people about the quiet world that thrives, largely unnoticed, in the wooded areas around town. Littleton conducts Vernal Pool Parties each spring, usually in late April, to help shine a light on these environments. “It’s all about getting the kids out and learning what vernal pools are,” Littleton says. “They get to take a look at a variety of amphibians, which is
one of the main focuses, and to see this — which is really a complete ecosystem in and of itself.” Participants often get to see everything from Spotted Salamanders and Jefferson Salamanders to Wood Frogs, Fairy Shrimp and assorted egg masses. A wide variety of plant life also depends on vernal pools to survive — Highblush Blueberry, Winterberry and Mountain Holly, for example — and Littleton has seen animal life ranging from raccoons to Great Blue Herons. “It’s stuff people don’t normally see,” he says. “Especially these Mole Salamanders. They move around at night when it rains, they hide under the leaf litter during the day, lay their eggs and then they’re out of there.” The experience came out of the Conservation Commission’s interest in providing a workshop that gives residents a chance to get outside and enjoy the town’s trail system. “It’s an unknown world to a lot of people,” Littleton says. n

A look at Merrimack’s Trail System Whatever the season, there are options for residents and visitors alike who are looking to connect with nature. Trail & Location:
Description:
Details:
Good for:
Horse Hill Nature Preserve 184 Amherst Road
At more than 563 acres of diverse terrain — from gently rolling pathways to a pair of 400-foot elevations — the Horse Hill Nature Preserve is the largest parcel in Merrimack. There are a number of marked trails here, including the 4.41-mile Loop Trail, the Blodgett Hill Summit and the Twister, which is named for its meandering, winding path perfect for mountain bikers.
Parking at the 184 Amherst Road access site and at Watanic Bowmen on Tinker Road; ATV use and target shooting are prohibited; there are no restricted hours of use.
Hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and hunting.
Wildcat Falls Conservation Area The intersection of Currier and Hemlock Roads
A beautiful 87 acres of managed pine and hardwood forests, the Wildcat Falls Conservation Area abuts the Souhegan River. A standalone section of the trail will take visitors to the Wildcat Falls, for which the area is named. Trails here include the 0.6mile North Loop Trail and the 1.4-mile Falls Loop Trail.
Parking at the Currier Road access site; though swimming at the Falls is not restricted, it is dangerous and not encouraged; motorized vehicles, camping, fires and hunting are not permitted; access is ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.
Hiking, biking, fishing, cross country skiing.
Wasserman Conservation Area 116 Nanticook Road
This 88-acre parcel abuts Greens Pond Road, and includes the Quarry Trail, which crosses Nanticook Road and continues into Horse Hill Nature Preserve. The conservation area includes 900 feet of shoreline along Naticook Lake and Naticook Brook as it flows into Greens Pond.
Parking at Wasserman Park; Motorized vehicles and hunting are not permitted. A 1992 archeological survey found that Native Americans lived in Wasserman Conservation watershed area in the mid-1600s — and maybe as far back as 5,000 years ago.
Hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing.
Gilmore Hill Memorial Forest Greens Pond Road
13 acres of forest overlook 10 acres of forest and shrub land near Naticook Brook. In 1997, Constance Heath, Lucille Bernaiche and Bert Hill deeded to the town this parcel of land in memory of their father Bert Gilmore and Rolland Hill for management as conservation land. The donation is marked with a plaque located near the kiosk.
Parking is available at 38 Greens Pond Road near the junction of Greens Pond Brook; the use of any firearms or bows is not permitted; there are no hourly restrictions on this trail system. In the early 1920s into the late 1960s, this parcel and much of the surrounding land was farmland worked by Bert Gilmore and his stepson Rolland Hill.
Hiking, biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and other motorized vehicles.
Grater Woods Madeline Bennet Drive
This 480-acre parcel contains a diverse offering of environments, including streams, ponds, swamps, wetlands, open space and forests. These habitats are home to a variety of wildlife who call the Grater Woods area home. Grater Woods is made up of several parcels of land, including one owned by the Merrimack School District. The area takes its name from Charles Edwin Grater, who purchased the land known today as the Grater homestead on South Grater Road in the mid-1800s.
Parking is available at the Merrimack Middle School, but it’s not encouraged when school is in session. The use of firearms, bow and arrows, hunting and motorized off road vehicles is prohibited on school district property; target shooting of any kind is prohibited in Grater Woods.
Hiking, biking, hunting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and horseback riding.
“If you’re a Merrimack resident and you’re looking to help out — even though you think your resume might not lean towards the Conservation Commission but you’re interested in being outdoors and seeing more trails and better resources for people — by all means drop us a line or come to our meeting. We meet twice a month on Mondays, typically the first and third Monday. We’re always looking for folks that are willing to help out.” – Matt Caron, Merrimack Conservation Commission

Upgraded maps were recently made available, thanks to a partnership with the Nashua Regional Planning Commission (NRPC). The NRPC took to the town’s nature preserves and conservation parcels with a high-end Trimble GPS unit, walked every single trail and created guide maps that are accurate to within 18 inches. “It’s ridiculously accurate,” Caron says. “We made sure we did it on clear days right after the leaves fell so we were getting a lot of satellite readings, getting topography — everything.” The first of the maps, for the Horse Hill Nature Preserve, was approved at a Conservation Committee meeting in March. Other, new maps will be added throughout the year. As for what visitors can expect when venturing out into the town’s trails, Caron offers a few tips: The longest continuous trail, at about four and ½ miles, is the Loop Trail at the Horse Hill Nature Preserve. “It’s very wellmarked,” he says. “You can’t get lost on that one. It’s blazed in white and it’s just continuous. From one marker you can look and see the next white marker.”

The most challenging is also in the Horse Hill Nature Preserve. That’s where hikers will discover Horse Hill Summit and Blodgett Hill Summit. “Blodgett Hill Summit is pretty technical going up,” he says. “There are a lot of rocks and roots. It’s not like climbing Mount Lafayette, where you need gear, but it’s definitely more challenging than some of the other trails.” For beginners: Try the Gateway and Red Maple trails in Grater Woods. “It makes a big loop, but the elevation barely changes,” he says. In the end, Caron says residents and visitors shouldn’t hesitate to experience the trail system based on their hiking experience alone. With options ranging from easy to challenging, there is something for everyone. “I’ve seen people leave the parking lot in flip flops, so don’t be intimidated,” he says. “Some of the trails at each of the properties are flat and wide and not intimidating. However, if you want a trail where there’s something touching your shoulders on each side and you’re climbing up steep hills, there’s that, too.” n

COMMUNITY SAFETY

Merrimack, meet Dallas Police Department bolsters roster with new K9 team
W
hen one of the Merrimack Police Department’s newest recruits starts his day, he’ll get out of bed, maybe have some water and then chase the ball around for a little while before breakfast — which is usually a heaping bowl of kibble. Dallas, a two and a half-year-old German Shepherd who works alongside Master Patrolman Stephen Wallin each day, is the new four-legged half of the department’s K9 team. He replaces the former police dog, Gunny, who started with the town in 2009 and retired this past year. With an opening for both a handler and a dog, Wallin, an eight year veteran of the force, jumped at the chance. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, so when the opening popped up, I automatically put in for it,” he says. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I started here. We didn’t have a K9 program when I first started. It started up a couple months later, and that’s when they got Gunny — the first dog.”

Dallas, a lively sable and black German Shepherd, came to Merrimack through Northeast K9 Unlimited, in Raynham, Mass last fall. He arrived with some basic training, and an impressive pedigree. His grandfather was the K9 for the head trainer for the Boston, Mass., police department, his brother also worked with a Boston handler and is now with the Suffolk County team. “It runs in the family,” Wallin says of Dallas’ lineage. “He’s got good bloodlines.” Dallas came to town a little on the small side thanks to a fast metabolism and an active lifestyle, but Wallin and his family, with whom the 61 pound dog lives, have been working to beef him up a little. The handler says the dog is a great fit at home, where he lives with Wallin, his wife, Kristen, three children and a yellow Lab named Riley. “He’s very social.” “I’ll be outside playing in the snow with him and my yellow lab and they get along very well,” he says.
“He’s a much different dog than when I’m doing a building search and he’s looking for somebody. You can tell — the bark is different. When we’re doing a search, he wants to find somebody.” That, according to the handler, is Dallas’ specialty. While the casual observer may envision a police K9 doing bite work or chasing suspects, Wallin says the majority of the work centers around tracking — something he’s particularly good at. “That’s what he’s best at: tracking, 100 percent,” Wallin says. “When I first purchased him, the person who had him before told me, ‘He will track you home. His nose is that good.’ His tracking is phenomenal. I’ve been on numerous training tracks with him and it’s unbelievable what he can find. He’s going to find whoever he’s looking for.” The value of having a K9 on the department with those particular skills becomes apparent when police respond to Alzheimer’s patients who need to be
located, or when children get lost. “He’s a great dog, but he’s a locating tool,” Wallin says. “That’s primarily what they’re used for. A lot of people see police K9s and the first thing they talk about is the dog biting somebody. And that’s less than five percent of what we do. He finds items, he tracks people — that’s what he does. And then if needed, he can apprehend people. But that’s a very small amount of what we do. That’s what we do to educate people, because the first thing they might say, is ‘Oh wow, I bet he could bite somebody,’ as opposed to, ‘Oh wow, I wonder what he could find?’ That’s really the amazing part, is not biting somebody, it’s the small items he can find, even when they’re buried in the snow.” A typical day starts with some morning exercise, and then obedience training when the dog is fed. After that, the team may execute an article search — looking for items such as keys or wallets. The afternoon will consist of even more obedience training, and then running through different situations such as a vehicle bail-out or building searches. Wallin travels to Boston each Friday to training on his own time. It’s a constant, ongoing process, he says. “It’s a lot of training, especially off-duty, too because it’s every single day,” Wallin says. “Every 2-3 weeks I try to take one day where we
don’t do anything. I just kind of walk him, let him relax and play ball with him like any dog.” Yet when it’s time to go to punch-in, Dallas transforms from companion to teammate. His bark changes, his demeanor changes, and it becomes apparent he’s ready to work. “They know you better than you know yourself,” he says of the dog’s ability to read a situation. “He can tell if I’m nervous about something. He can definitely tell. You can see a change in his behavior when he knows it’s time to work.” At the same time, Wallin says the dog fills a number of less formal roles. Children are naturally drawn to him, allowing the team to build relationships with the town’s youngest residents. Then there’s the professional and personal fulfillment of the town’s new crime fighting arrangement. “I’ve always loved dogs, so it’s always been an interest of mine,” Wallin says. “Though it is much different than having a dog and doing sport training, it is still having a dog and having that relationship and building a bond with them.” n

town improvements
Changes coming to Town Center Committee’s plans get a boost
L
ong-awaited improvements to the streets, side roads and pathways in the center of Merrimack are beginning to take shape. The Merrimack Town Center Committee was awarded a Transportation Alternative Program grant of $520,000 late last year — the second such grant in as many years designed to create a walkable town center. “That’s really the core of a downtown,” Nelson Disco, Chairman of the Town Center Committee and a member of the Merrimack Planning Board says. The first task, however, was defining the Merrimack town center. “We’ve always wondered, ‘what’s the town center? Where’s the center?’,” Disco says. “So the planning board took it upon itself to define it. And it wasn’t easy because there are a lot of good reasons to name some other sections, like Reed’s Ferry and so, on as part of the center, also. We looked at a study that covered this part of the town center and it made a plan for trying to improve it — to make it more like a center.” The Nashua Regional Planning Commission (NRPC) conducted a study through its integrated services program — iTRaC — which is designed to help communities deal with the challenges of growth in a way that sustains community character and a sense of place. The result: The Merrimack town center is everything east of the turnpike, north of Rite Aid and up to Front Street. “We’ve got the school, the high school, the town hall, we’ve got churches, we’ve got the library – those things are in the town center, as well as the post office,” Disco says. “It’s all in this area. So the study undertaken by the NRPC, under the iTRaC, identified where pedestrian ways existed, and where they should exist to make it workable. And they came out with a Master Plan.”

The town has received a grant to build a much-needed sidewalk along Woodbury Street. (Photo by Wendy Wood.)
The next step was to begin to create a more walkable, accessible town center. “The (Merrimack Town Center) Committee was tasked to go make this happen, but with no money,” Disco says. “We’ve been struggling with this — the no money situation — and we’ve had some successes so far, although it’s slow going.” The first success was the creation of a sidewalk in front of Watson Park. Then, the town was awarded a federal Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant, which allowed the creation of a walking trail from Watson Park along the Souhegan River, reaching up to Merrill’s Marauder’s Bridge. It encompasses a foot bridge that crosses the river, connecting neighborhoods and making a walking path down to the center of town. “That has been funded and it’s slowly inching its way along — it’s about a three year process,” Disco says. “We’ve had a couple of public hearings where they had to consider alternatives routes.” A hearing on the Souhegan River Trail, funded by the TAP grant, was held, during which three different routes to arrive at the east end of the trail were presented. The first was a route under the Chamberlain Bridge. The second and third alternatives set a course in northern and southern directions along Daniel Webster Highway and then across by using crossing paths or traffic signals. Resident comments were unanimously in favor of the tunnel. “The trail will go under Route 3,” Disco says. “There’s an old sluice way there that fed water to the
mill from the dam pond, and that is about 12 feet wide and it’s a beautiful place for a walking trail.” The town was awarded a second $520,000 TAP grant late last year to build a sidewalk on Woodbury Street, which runs from McElwain Street to the Daniel Webster Highway. “It goes up to the high school, and kids walk all along it,” Disco says. “When high school lets out, they come down that road, they walk in the road, and so do the hot rodders who are just so glad to get out of class. So there’s a real issue there.” The Town Center Committee has planned on a three year timeline for the completion of the project. The federal grant must be approved by the Governor, the Executive Committee, and then the job must be put out to bid. “Of course, they’ve got a plate full already, and they’ve had a couple of meetings and they haven’t brought it up yet, but eventually that has to be approved — all of these grants from the federal government have to be approved, so we’re hoping for success there,” Disco says. In the future, the Town Center Committee has discussed improvements at Abbie Griffin Park that would connect the Town Hall with the nearby network of trails. The plan, according to Disco, is to pursue funding for further improvements. “Well, yes, we probably will (apply for more grants),” he says. “We’ve got these rolling, and there’s nothing to prevent us from trying again next year for some more.” n

retail development
Long-empty plaza eyed for new development

he long-vacant, 14-acre parcel at 360 Daniel Webster Highway — one time home to a Shaw’s grocery store — may not be idle for much longer. A plan to breathe new life into the site is underway, and includes new retail tenants, possible dining options and an extensive redevelopment of the entire parcel. “We are going to deliver more than a cosmetic renovation, it’s truly a complete redevelopment of the structure and site,” says Michael Buckley, a partner with property management and development firm OVP Management, Inc. — the owner-controller of the property. The space, informally referred to as the “dead Shaw’s plaza,” has sat empty for some time after the grocery chain moved its operations. Representatives with Hoyle, Tanner and Associates and OVP Management, Inc., met with the Merrimack Planning Board late last year to outline plans for the site. “They came to us and they said, ‘what do you think of this?’,” Planning Board member Nelson Disco says. “They gave us some great pictures and everybody said, ‘yeah, yeah, go do it.’” The conceptual plans provided to the board indicated that the developers hope to modernize the property by adding a variety of elements. “They talked about redoing the whole facade,” Disco says. “Making it more modern with two addi-

tional pads, and we said, ‘no problem.’ There’s plenty of parking there, we’ve never had a problem with that, so we gave them the green light.” Buckley says changes will include a resurfaced parking lot, new sidewalks and outdoor spaces, new storefronts and facades, refurbished and added signage and common areas, among other things, designed at creating a new feel and providing new opportunities for both residents and the many people who work in town during the day. “It’s an excellent plan to create lifestyle, community-oriented shopping, with open green space conducive to foot traffic and patio spaces,” he says. “We can really turn this thing around from a dull and standard big parking field with a strip mall, to a mini version of Legacy Place in Dedham (Massachusetts).” Legacy Place is an outdoor shopping and dining destination with more than 75 retail shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. The town’s response has been positive. “It was important that we had a preliminary meeting with the town Planning Board,” Buckley says. “They’ve been incredibly supportive of the product we’re looking to put into place, fully recognizing the challenge to bring about the transformation of the site, knowing the risk involved and that we’re fully committed to making it happen. They’ve been nothing but supportive while at the same time expressing clearly the needs of the community.”
Because nearby cities like Nashua and Manchester have become a strong draw for retail businesses, potential tenants at the site — temporarily going by the name “Merrimack Plaza” — will need things such as prominent signage, lighting, access and parking. “If we’re going to bring tenants to the site and drive meaningful traffic that adds value to the community, we also have to put the product in line for those tenants,” Buckley says. “The planning board has recognized that tenants will only consider the site if we can deliver those selling points.” OVP Management, which developed and manages the Settler’s Green Outlet Village in North Conway, has identified a number of possible tenants, including “nationally-branded, high quality” retailers such as a dollar store concept, a fitness club, hardware and appliance retailers, hair salons and interest from restaurants serving food ranging from wood-fired pizza and brew pubs to Asian cuisine. By late winter this year, the management team had roughly 50 percent of the space under letter-of-intent, or were in negotiation with potential tenants, which was enough for the project to continue moving forward. “We’re delivering best-in-class product for Merrimack, but also focused on best-in-class tenancy for the community,” Buckley says. “We’re going to bring online unique offerings, entailing things that cannot be digitized. We want to drive meaningful foot traffic
— food, appliances, hardware, fitness concepts, grocery, and haircuts — things you can never go online and replace. We’re looking at places where people can hang out and enjoy while getting 5-6 shopping and lifestyle chores done in one place.” The elephant in the room, as Buckley describes it, is deciding which grocery outlet will anchor the space. “Shaw’s has had a grip on the town for years, and we believe with Merrimack’s higher median household incomes, the strong concentration of population and strong daytime employment numbers, this community is looking for a higher quality, more wholesome offering that can come in
and compete with Shaw’s. We continually hear from the community resounding support for an incoming grocery component,” he says. OVP has also teamed with Cambridge, Mass.based architects Prellwitz Chilinski Associates and the MEG Companies, of Londonderry, a commercial and residential real estate agency, broker, management and consulting firm. Construction on the project at Merrimack Plaza is expected to begin this summer, with the goal of opening to tenants in 2018, which, according to town officials, is welcome news. “I think everyone will be interested to hear about this,” Disco says. n

n the surface, the annual Spring Into Chic Fashion Show and Expo may look like an exciting, glamorous event bringing together students, local businesses and notable residents during a glitzy night celebrating dazzling couture. A closer look, however, reveals that the Merrimack Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the annual event, is actually sowing the seeds of a brighter future as models strut down the runway. The Spring Into Chic Fashion Show and Expo is one of two scholarship-driven events during the year that are designed to provide a way for the Chamber to help some of the town’s younger residents realize their dreams. Participation, and the scholarship, is open to any Merrimack High School junior or senior student. Participating students submit a brief bio that showcases their personality and details hobbies, activities, where they’re planning to go to college, and what they’re planning to study. Student biographies are included in the event booklet, in the middle of the program booklet which doubles as a ballot. Audi-

ence members vote on ‘their favorite student’ to win. Then the committee members tally the votes. At the end of the night, a winner is announced and awarded a $500 scholarship from the Merrimack Chamber of Commerce. The event itself is a two-hour fashion showcase featuring a variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories for the 2017 spring and summer seasons. This year’s show, held at the Courtyard Marriott in Nashua, attracted more than 200 attendees who got a chance to view collections on the catwalk from designer stores at the Merrimack Premium Outlets and David’s Bridal, among other participating businesses. Students model prom-wear, and past notable guests such as Merrimack Police Chief Mark Doyle and Capt. Denise Roy, School Superintendent Marge Chiafery and Town Council Chair Nancy Harrington have modeled everything from casual clothing from Vineyard Vines to more formal attire. “We are happy to announce that the Spring into Chic Fashion Show is scheduled for April 12, 2018 at the Event Center, Courtyard Marriott, in Nashua,” Merrimack Chamber of Commerce President Melissa Ballard Sullivan said. “We hope to engage juniors and seniors in not only modeling, but in assisting us with the planning and presentation of the 2018 show. We would like to provide students with the opportunity to model and to learn other skills needed to plan a successful event such as marketing, public relations, and project management.” Any Merrimack High School student interested in taking part in the Spring into Chic Fashion Show and Expo can apply by emailing a picture of themselves, along with a short bio, to info@merrimackchamber.org. Additional scholarships sponsored by the Merrimack Chamber of Commerce are presented to high school students who either work for a Chamber member or who are dependents of people who work for Chamber members. Deciding factors also include academics, volunteerism, community involvement and extracurricular activities. The Chamber typically awards three scholarships. The Merrimack Chamber of Commerce has awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships to date. n Opposite page, clockwise from top left: Police Chief Mark Doyle models for Bloomingdales.
