ABOUT THE AREA

Getting to Know Greater Merrimack Come discover a tight-knit community at the center of the modern global economy and small-town New England history

The Community Southern New Hampshire is home to Merrimack — a community with a unique combination of economic opportunity, natural beauty, and the sort of small-town charm that attracts growing families, enthusiastic young professionals and wide-eyed visitors from across the country. In Merrimack, picturesque parks, pristine waters and stunning forest vistas are at your fingertips, as are the professional opportunities made possible by a rapidly growing community that’s adapted on the fly to thrive as a part of the evolving, expanding regional and global economies. Merrimack is home to a flourishing group of technology companies, a colorful roster of restaurants serving deliciously varied cuisine, and the sort of effortless natural beauty that keeps visitors returning annually and residents here for a lifetime. Come discover what’s here!

The History The town of Merrimack, in southern New Hampshire’s Hillsborough County, was created on April 2nd, 1746, when Governor Benning Wentworth signed a charter establishing

the land from Pennichuck Brook to the Souhegan River as the Town of Merrymac. Less than 50 families lived here then, and Pawtucket, Nashuaway and Penacook Indians camped along the banks of the Merrimack and Souhegan Rivers. In the beginning, there were few stores and no schools, and industry consisted of saw and grist mills. Most Merrimack residents were farmers. Since then, the town has undergone an explosion of development and advancement, with population increasing to more than 27,000. Town facilities have seen significant shifts, with new schools and colleges constructed, a one-time volunteer fire department replaced by a full-time force with three fire stations, and the police department expanding and modernizing. The larger community has seen an evolution, too. Farms were replaced by developments, apartments and condominiums. Industry came to focus on manufacturers of paper products, furniture and electronics. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery opened in 1970, including a paddock for the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. Many larger stores and shopping malls, including the Merrimack Premium Outlets, were built along Route 3 and on Route 101A. Merrimack keeps on changing – for the better!

LOCALLY GROWN Currier Orchards 9 Peaslee Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-673-9538 Currier Orchards offers a mouth-watering assortment of baked indulgences from pumpkin bread to apple pies, as well as handcrafted pickles, jellies and jams. Just think – we haven’t even mentioned the freshly pressed, delicious apple cider yet. Depot Farm Stand & Gift Shop 668 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-429-0507; www.depotfarm.com Depot Farm Stand & Gift Shop feels like the quintessential New Hampshire family farm and business. It’s been a fixture in Merrimack for over three decades, providing the community with locally grown vegetables, fruits and herbs, as well as an extensive selection of home-gardening basics. Don’t forget to stop by the country gift shop before you leave – there are all kinds of local gifts and treats available for purchase.

Friendly Family Farms There’s a large selection of delectable and delightful goods and produce at your fingertips from the moment you step into Merrimack. You can thank the hardworking local farmers and business owners for that bounty, of course, but it’s a climate that also results from a community that has embraced and supported small local family farms like few others in the state. Throughout the year, excited residents of all ages flock to farmer’s markets and pick-your-own orchards. After one look at what the Greater Merrimack region has to offer – from a country gift shop to honey to crisp freshly harvested vegetables – we’re sure you’ll be on your way too.

Hillside Apiaries 31 Hillside Terrace, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-429-0808; www.hillsidebees.com Merrimack’s home for honeybees has become a local institution; it’s the go-to destination for anything related to bees or beekeeping, and it’s known for a wide selection of gourmet sweet treats and honey-based skin care products. Don’t forget the main attraction – good, old-fashioned bottles of delicious, golden honey. Labore Farms 37 Meetinghouse Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-424-3210 Between July and October, the Labore family operates an inviting roadside farm stand, stocked with fresh produce and blooming flowers. Your only problem will be deciding what to bring home – golden sweet corn, zucchini, peppers, green beans, cucumbers, pumpkins and on, and on. It is, we think, a rather grand problem to have. Lastowka’s Maple Gate Farm 183 Amherst Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-424-4742 No tour of Merrimack’s natural splendor is complete without a stop at the only vineyard in town. Visit Maple Gate Farm for the sights – as well as the pick-your-own blueberries and the selection of crisp apples, juicy peaches and pears, and sweet grapes. Merrimack Farmers’ Market 515 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, NH 03054 603-424-2331; merrimackfarmersmarket@gmail.com There’s no better way to enjoy a summer afternoon than at a local farmer’s market, with the sun on your shoulders and a vast selection of fresh, delicious, handcrafted goods and produce at your fingertips. The Merrimack Farmer’s Market has been in operation since 2009, running on Wednesday afternoons from the beginning of June all the way until September’s end. Between 3:30 and 6:30 PM, visit The Commons Shopping Center to see just what the region’s finest farmers and bakers have in store.

PARKS & RECREATION

Merrimack’s Parks There are few places in the country that offer the natural splendor of New Hampshire communities, and greater Merrimack is no exception. A treasured network of pristine parks and sparkling waterways has long been among the reasons residents and first-time visitors alike are drawn to the region. We’d suggest you spend a sunny afternoon or two relaxing comfortably and exploring a little of what’s waiting in Merrimack’s great outdoors. For more information, contact the Merrimack Parks and Recreation Department at 603-882-1046. Photo by Karen Bachelder

The Heritage Trail 6 Baboosic Lake Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 Take a scenic journey of geologic, prehistoric and historic sites in Merrimack with the Village Loop of the Merrimack Heritage Trail. Begin the Village Loop trail at the Town Hall, and follow it up Baboosic Lake Road. At the end of Currier Road is the entrance to an 80acre conservation area. Follow the trail along the river to the breathtaking series of three waterfalls called Wildcat Falls. Horse Hill Nature Preserve 184 Amherst Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 At 563 acres, Horse Hill is the largest preserved open space property in the town of Merrimack and features a wide range of opportunities for both passive and active recreation as well as diverse habitats for plants and wildlife. Horse Hill Nature Preserve is primarily comprised of beautiful mixed hardwood forest, but also offers two 400-foot hills and nearly 60 acres of ponds, streams and other wetlands. Old logging roads form the basis of a trail network now frequented by hikers, bikers, hunters, snowmobilers and horseback riders.

Twin Bridge Park 487 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, NH 03054 Merrimack’s past and present pleasantly share space at Twin Bridge Park. Massive stones secure the titular historic bridges, which were once used by colonial Merrimack residents. Other highlights include trails alongside the scenic, pristine Baboosic Brook, as well as the newly updated Kids Kove Playground. Veterans Memorial Park 155 Camp Sargent Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 Veterans Memorial Park pays its respects to national heroes and the national pastime alike. The pastime gets its due through numerous baseball fields where family and friends can swing for the fences; the heroes, meanwhile, are honored by a memorial to America’s veterans visible as visitors enter the park. Wasserman Park 116 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 Take your pick of outdoor pastimes at Wasserman Park; there’s swimming, fishing, tennis, basketball, and ball fields, and the kids can play to their hearts’

content on the Norma French Memorial Playground. The Zyla picnic area, located by the waterfront, is also available to rent for special events. Watson Park 441 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, NH 03054 Cherished, longtime residents, Harold and Barbara Watson donated Watson Park to their community, and now its sandy beaches and picturesque expanses of grass attract visitors from across the state and beyond. The Greater Merrimack community has continued to make contributions over the years to refresh the park and keep it inviting and enjoyable for residents and visitors. Weston Park 49 Turkey Hill Road, Merrimack, NH 03054 Weston Park is equal parts history and natural beauty. There’s an old meeting house and a cemetery, as well as the foundation of the former Turkey Hill Road covered bridge. Visitors can also tour flora like American Hornbeam trees, wild flowers and lichens, or go fishing, boating, picnicking or sledding. www.merrimackchamber.org

errimack has been named the 24th safest community in the nation by neighborhoodscout.com – an organization that monitors law enforcement and crime statistics. It’s just the latest recognition that has acknowledged the quality of life in Merrimack – thanks in part to the efforts of its police department. Long-time champions of community policing, the Merrimack force uses a wide variety of practices and programs designed to include residents in its efforts – a tactic that has paid dividends. “It’s definitely the culture of the police department to be a community partner, which matters, because it’s not just ‘us versus them,’” Merrimack Police Lt. Denise Roy says. “It’s never been that way here. It’s always a question of, ‘what can we do to prevent crime?’” The answer to that question, according to Chief Mark E. Doyle, is multifaceted. “I think it’s a lot of things,” Doyle says, attributing the success to a series of longstanding programs. “It’s something we evolved with over the past 30-plus years or so. I can say that as far back as 31 years ago when I was a brand new patrolman under Chief Joseph Devine, it was something he had started even then in the early 80s.” Doyle has served as the department’s chief for the past five years, but over the more than three decades he’s spent patrolling the neighborhoods, businesses and roadways of the town, he’s seen a great deal of change. While the town’s population hasn’t changed dramatically, it has seen growth in commercial properties, which bring many people to Merrimack every day. As Roy points out, just because the people who work at some of the town’s largest employers – Fidelity Investments, BAE Systems, PC Connections, Anheuser Busch – don’t sleep in Merrimack, it doesn’t mean they aren’t the responsibility of the police department. “Our population swells so much during the day with all the employees that work in town,” Roy says. “Fidelity alone has 5,000 people, so you add all the other companies that are coming into town – that’s a large chunk of our population.” Serving this population has meant tailoring policing strategies. Roy was one of the earliest members of the departments bicycle patrol efforts, which allowed officers to better engage with people in neighborhoods and businesses. The department regularly meets with the business

community and its leaders to learn what it can do, and to communicate expectations. The same philosophy has led to a series of community meetings known as “Coffee With a Cop,” where department members visit various coffee shops in town with no agenda other than to talk with residents. “If they have questions or concerns, it’s a great time to talk,” Roy says. “You hear the scuttlebutt about what might be going on, but unless you sit down with somebody and talk to them, you might not really know.” It’s just another example of how the department is partnering with the community. Among the Merrimack Police Department’s other initiatives:

Safe Exchange Just outside the main entrance of the police station are two parking spaces that have been designated as safe exchange locations. Residents can meet there for child custody exchanges or to conduct online sales – like craigslist or eBay transactions. New lighting was recently installed around the spaces and the area, which is identified by signs, is under 24-hour video surveillance. “There’s a sense of relief that people understand they can meet someone here,” Roy says. “And quite honestly, people with ill intentions are more likely not to want to come to the police station. It’s best that people say, ‘I’ll meet you at the police station.’”

Prescription Drug Drop Off Box The box allows people to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications. The box

is located in the lobby of the police station and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week – no questions asked. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from, we’ll take it,” Roy says. “We average 18-20 pounds of unwanted, unused prescription drugs a week. If you think about how valuable that is, taking those drugs off the streets that might otherwise fall into the hands of children or people who are addicted to opiates – now we can safely dispose of them.”

Citizens Academy Now in its 23rd class, the Citizens Academy is a 10-week course open to any Merrimack resident over 18 that illustrates everything from an overview of the organization to how police conduct criminal investigations. Participants can even take part in a four-hour ride-along so they can experience what an officer may encounter during any given shift. According to Doyle, however, it goes much deeper than just providing insight into police procedures. “They get a better feel for the officers themselves and they see our officers as individuals and as people, because they get that engagement and interaction that’s so important,” Doyle says. “It’s as important, About the Merrimack Police Department 40 Sworn officers 6 Full-time dispatchers 4 Support administration staff 2 Part-time dispatchers 1 Animal control officer 1 K9 officer, Gunny (603) 424-3774 31 Baboosic Lake Rd. merrimacknh.gov/police-department

and in some cases, more important than the meat-andpotatoes of police work that they’re being exposed to.”

Crimeline Residents can provide information online through a secure server, or by phone – completely anonymously. Anyone taking part is issued a number and the ability to create their own password so they can follow up to see if their tip helped solve a crime. If that happens, cash rewards can be earned. All tips are submitted anonymously whether provided online (merrimackcrimeline.org) or by phone (603-424-2424).

Social Media “When I became chief, I wanted to make sure we were leading the charge in social media, because we’re always looking for another way to extend ourselves and connect with folks,” Doyle says. Toward that end, the department has an active presence on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Plus and LinkedIn.

CREATING A HEALTHIER TOMORROW The police department has also recently launched a new, free smartphone app developed by Cloudspace Mobile. The app allows users to submit anonymous tips, contact officers, contact school resource officers, access its social media sites, read current press releases, view most-wanted information and the ability to commend an officer. The app also features Nixle, which is a real-time emergency notification system that can alert residents about anything from road closures and traffic delays to the status of ongoing investigations. In the end, however, it’s just another tool at the officers’ disposal. According to department leaders, however, it all starts with the people. “It’s the patrolmen, the detectives, the people in records, it’s all the people that work here that are the ones who go out and do these programs and are successful at it,” Roy says. “Without them and their enthusiasm to do these things, we never would be where we are today.”

Artisanal, Fast and Friendly Buckley’s Bakery and Café provides diners with a creative option

I

t’s 2 a.m. on a Thursday and most people are asleep – yet the lights in a small shop at 436 Daniel Webster Highway are burning warmly. Not long after, the smell of baking bread wafts tantalizingly across the road as inside, the first shift of bakers is hard at work preparing the hand-made treats that will line the glass cases and shelves in just a few hours. It’s just another day at Buckley’s Bakery and Cafe – a new eatery opened by restaurateur Michael Buckley, owner of five New Hampshire restaurants, including Buckley’s Great Steaks right next door. In fact, there are very few hours of the day that the lights aren’t on at Buckley’s latest restaurant, which in some ways resembles Merrimack’s own version of Willy Wonka’s factory. “My first baker starts at 10 o’clock at night and works until six in the morning,” Buckley says, taking a rare breather and easing into a chair in the café’s second floor dining area. “It really takes a pretty good size crew working through the night to get this stuff done. Right now the lights go off in the bakery somewhere around 7 o’clock at night and then they’re back on at 10. That’s almost 24 hours. You see the amount

of products. We did that intentionally.” Buckley says the plan was to “make a splash” when he invited the public in, offering a wide variety from which to choose. “I didn’t want people to walk in and just see a dozen things and think, ‘that’s nice but there’s not much there,’” he says. “When you walk in, there’s a lot of American bake shop items, there’s cookies, cakes, pies, whoopie pies, some things you might not see at an upscale bakery, and then you have all the really fancy French pastries. “ The plan was put into action, the cases were stocked, the kitchen buzzing along and the doors were first opened quietly on Nov. 10 last year, which was followed a week later with the official grand opening. From that point on, it was as if the bakery had been a part of this town all along. Regulars began stopping in each morning to grab a muffin or croissant and a coffee on the way to work, while others discovered the mouthwatering lunch offerings just a few steps down the case. Hand-tossed salads sit next to a dizzying variety of sandwiches, which have taken up residence beside a wide tray of pizzas. Sweeter options like turnovers, pies,

muffins, crumbles and frosted treats fill out the long glass case that lines one side of the shop, while baskets of freshly-baked breads peek out from behind the workers, who greet customers by name as they file in. “That’s part of our culture,” Buckley says of the easy familiarity between the clientele and the staff. “The traffic has been great and it’s growing every week, but the thing that I really am very happy about is that you don’t know somebody by name until they’ve been in a few times. We’ve been here four months and we already have an incredible amount of regulars – I’m talking about people who come every day.” Step inside and an endless selection of fresh goods beckons. To the right, a large window provides a look at the kitchen, where Buckley can often be found, as if directing traffic. The tall restaurateur in the white coat oversees the busy workspace, and then checks on a recently-arriving customer to make sure she’s being helped. Meanwhile, the day’s offerings are being created – completely from scratch and by hand. While it may be labor-intensive, it’s the only way to build a reputation. “All the breakfast pastries, all the sandwiches, all of

Kitchen lore holds that Buckley and Chef Justin Lyonnaise tried more than three dozen attempts before it was perfected. “The blueberry muffins were 40 recipes because I wanted it to be a very rustic muffin,” he says. “I didn’t want it to be that spongy cake. You can get those anywhere. That’s not the style I appreciate. Some people do, and that’s fine, but I wanted a very rustic blueberry muffin so we ended up going somewhere between a blueberry muffin and a corn muffin. We use a fair amount of fine corn meal because I wanted it to have that crumb – that rustic crumb so it’s not like you’re eating a cake. I wanted a rustic blue-

baked goods, sandwiches and a coffee-lover’s haven is situated. Several tables look out the large windows facing the street. Meanwhile, upstairs, additional seating in the form of tables, comfortable, overstuffed chairs and a couch sit by a warm fireplace. “It’s really become a meeting place,” Buckley says. “That’s what people do, they’ll say ok, let’s all meet at Buckley’s Bakery. No. 1 because we do have some space for it and we do have some farmer’s tables that allow a larger party to meet, but I think it’s convenient too. Individually, people can go downstairs and get what they want – whether it’s a coffee and a muffin or a coffee and

berry muffin. It took a little while to figure that out. Sometimes people think I’m nuts, but it’s an awesome muffin and I can stand behind it.” Buckley drew from several influences when he began planning the bakery – including reaching into his past. When the renowned chef was 21, he worked in a restaurant in Germany. The master chef’s father was a baker, and he opened a bakery next door. “We had great breads every single day – fresh donuts, fresh pastry, it was fantastic,” he says. “I’ve always appreciated the classical technique of French and western European bakeries and baked products. I love them. But I also understand that this is America and there’s a lot of American bake shop type of stuff. Meaning whoopie pies and pies and cupcakes – these are things that are popular in America. So we tried to take a little bit of both of that.” Though it’s been open for less than a year, Buckley’s has begun to cement itself as a community center. People gather, talk and share a meal there. The main entrance opens into a cozy space where the impossibly varied selection of

a sandwich – and come up here and get together and everybody has paid for their own thing. It’s just easy.” When the multifaceted food plan was settled on, it was time to focus on the café’s coffee. Again, it wasn’t going to be a quick or easy process. The coffee isn’t an afterthought, because, according to Buckley, “I wanted our coffee to make a statement.” The bakery and café partnered with Mill City Roasters, and put together an innovative, memorable coffee menu. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” he says. “There are other people I could’ve partnered with, but Kevin Clay, the guy who owns it, has a roasting style that’s a real rich style. He air-roasts, small batch, and while a lot of his stuff is more roasted than other people’s, it does provide a very bold, rich flavor which I like.” It’s an extension of the restaurateur’s philosophy of doing things the right way, even it’s not the easier way. “At the end of the day you want to know you checked off all the boxes so you know you have what you really want.”

our salads, any of the sushi, anything that can be compromised, gets pulled every single day so everything is fresh,” Buckley says. “When people come in and grab their coffee in the morning, they’re grabbing their coffee and grabbing a croissant that was in the oven an hour ago.” The mantra of ‘everything fresh’ is an almost fanatical approach at the Bakery, and at all of Buckley’s restaurants. “Unfortunately, that’s our disease,” Buckley says, laughing. “In all our restaurants we make every dressing, every sauce, every ice cream, every everything, in-house, from scratch. And we really do our testing. Even here, if we’re going to make a panini, you can’t believe how many times we made it and tried it before we decided it was worthy of going into the case. The whoopie pies were probably close to 50 tries.” Then there’s the saga of the Buckley’s blueberry muffin.

Creating Something From Nothing New technology capturing imaginations at Merrimack Public Library

T

he plan was for the young group of Brownies to gather for their weekly meeting in the lower level of the Merrimack Public Library. However, sometimes plans can go astray – especially when there’s a piece of futuristic technology between the front door and the meeting room. Already home to a number of fascinating elements, the library recently added to what it offers residents by purchasing a 3D printer. Now, armed with an idea, a plan and a design, Merrimack residents can manufacture something where there was once nothing. Located in the lobby just inside the front doors and across from the main reference desk, the printer – a Kossel Model A 3D Printer created by Turnkey Innovations, also of Merrimack – quietly hums away, creating whatever patrons’ imaginations can conjure up. And on that Wednesday night, the Brownies in question were captivated by the high-tech display going on right in front of them. “People want to create,” Library Director Yvette Couser says. “There’s so much control now with information being available to folks, they can really take control of creating things. And this is part of that. It lets someone’s ideas be

There are restrictions and requirements, also available on the web site. Users’ designs are then put into a queue, which is first-come, first-serve. As of now, there is no cost to use the 3D printer. “It’s popular, which is nice,” library director Yvette Couser says. “That’s what we want. We want people to come and utilize it.” 18

realized, and that’s just part of what we do.” A 3D printer is a device used to create a three dimensional, solid object from a digital file. Depending on the printer and the media used, 3D printers can create everything from tools to camera lenses to musical instruments. Right now, in Merrimack, it’s creating opportunities and sparking imagination. “That’s really why we wanted to have a 3D printer in the library,” Couser says. “It’s really

thinking about things in terms of engineering, through trial and error, and that’s one of the great things about it. I know other libraries are including 3D printers in their libraries, calling it a ‘maker space,’ as an area where you might have hands-on engineering, science and STEM activities. As far as I’m concerned this is something we’ve already been doing in the library, we’ve always had presentations where you might have a speaker come in or we might be doing story time or a craft event or an

20 years ago. There’s been a trend for libraries being more of a community space and a meeting space. I think now, instead of just being a repository for information, we are that, but at the same time we are also providing more instruction and more opportunity for people. We offer more tech classes and computer classes – there’s a lot more interaction with the public than we had. We’re facilitating learning and not just being that repository. We’ll do that too, but in terms of demand, we’re really responsive to what the public wants us to be.” The 3D printer was purchased with funds raised during the Turkey Shoot: Night of Raffles event held last fall, where more than $5,000 was raised. The library paid $1,200 for the printer, and the rest went toward the design and construction of the display cabinet and the cost of the filament used to create projects. Since then, it’s been a matter of trial, error, creativity and exploration. Some of the results can be seen on display in the printer’s display case. Alongside the device are small, plastic recreations of a knight, a dragon, a Boston Bruins logo and even the bust of a young Merrimack resident. “This is one of our teen patrons that came to us,” Estabrook says. “His mom put his name in the queue to get his face scanned. I came in yesterday, scanned his head and printed him out.” The small creation looks remarkably lifelike (though blue), and took approximately two hours to print. It’s not just small figures and trinkets, however. A music student came into the library and arranged to have a saxophone mouthpiece printed. One of the first projects was a working whistle. Couser herself created a working guitar capo. She researched a one-piece design of the device, which is used on the fretboard of a guitar to shorten the playable length of the strings, raising its pitch. She chose a gold colored filament, settled on a design, and despite a few misgivings about how it would turn out, set out to craft a 3D printed capo. In the end, it worked perfectly. “I didn’t think it was going to work,” she says. “And I like being proven wrong. I don’t mind that. I just love that it works and it’s just mine – it’s just unique.” Projects are only limited by library users’ ambition. “I think the potential is limitless, really,” Couser says. “It’s only limited to your imagination.” Of course, there was still the small matter of corralling the Brownies into their library meeting on that Wednesday night – which, in retrospect, wasn’t such a bad thing. “We don’t have enough girls in science,” Couser says. “These girls didn’t want to go to the meeting. They wanted to sit down and start to look for a design and make it their own.”

Incoming at the Outlets New retail, mixed-use plans to expand Merrimack Premium Outlets

T

he Merrimack Premium Outlets is an inviting retail haven, just off the Everett Turnpike, stuffed with shops from the Meadow to Woodland Court – and it’s about to grow just a bit bigger. When the Merrimack Premium Outlets first threw open its doors to customers four years ago, it was to a welcoming space packed with high-end retailers, dining options and specialty shops. Since that time, the bustling site has settled into its role as an in-demand shopping destination. New tenants have been added and a proposal is now in place that will expand the site even further. Preliminary plans have been unveiled to construct a future hotel, apartments, restaurants and retail space at the entrance to the Merrimack Premium Outlets.

New Projects The Merrimack Planning Board, this past year, approved a plan by the Monahan Companies that would expand the Premium Outlets property to include a number of new projects. The project is said to include a five-story, 120-room hotel and conference center, a parking garage with more than 1,000 spaces, and two fivestory buildings with retail, office and residential space. The lower levels would house the retail tenants, while the upper levels would house multifamily apartments and as much as 160,000 square feet of office space. The project still needs to gain approval for a conditional use permit, as well as site plan approval prior to moving forward. According to reports, the development will be similar to Residences at Portwalk Place in Portsmouth, with

a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments. The retail space is expected to include high quality restaurants and boutiques. The project, which will change the face of the entryway at busy shopping outlet, adding more options to the already colorful site, will be built over a five-to-seven-year period. New Retailers However, there are more immediate additions that shoppers will notice on their next visit to the thriving shopping destination. The 400,000-square-foot, $100 million outdoor outlet center opened in June of 2012 with more than 100 retail stores, from Aeropostale to Zumiez. Among the newest shops to join the collection: Think Kitchen – a Canadian-based retailer of kitchen and

housewares. The chain was founded eight years ago in Montreal, and counts 30 stores among its holdings north of the border and another 26 international sites. The Merrimack store – located near the bus stop at the Outlets – is the first in the United States. A walk into the shop reveals a nearly 2,000-squarefoot space with a wide variety of gadgets, accessories and must- haves. The designs are innovative, with a mission to reflect Think Kitchen’s customers’ personalities and lifestyles – at affordable prices. A stroll down one of the outdoor shopping center’s avenues reveals a seemingly endless selection, including a “coming-soon” promise of the site’s newest shop: Fila footwear. The convenience available on-site is also one of

its draws: There’s a bus stop, a kids play area near the Apple Orchard Court section, strollers for toting the younger shoppers, complimentary wheelchair service, and a site for converting foreign currency. And while it can seem rather large, with walkways and byways leading to shopping options tucked into inviting alleys and stretches of greenery and benchlined lanes, the layout lends itself well to navigation. It’s divided into the Meadow Court at one end, connected by the Orchard Court in the center, which leads to the Woodland Court at the far end. Pro tip for new visitors: Find a spot in the easilyaccessible, expansive parking lot, find the center (follow your nose to some tempting dining options), pick a direction and keep taking a right.

Anheuser-Busch Brews Up New Plans Expansion will benefit visitors and consumers

T

he lights atop the industrial buildings just off the Daniel Webster Highway illuminate the grounds on a dark morning, as tractor trailers with the familiar red Budweiser bow tie logo roll out across the roadway, carrying a variety of beers to shops, chains and distributors throughout the region. It’s a route that starts every day here in Merrimack, as it has since Anheuser-Busch first built the plant along the river in 1970. And soon, there will be even more suds brewing, as a planned expansion ramps up production – and provides new, exciting opportunities for visitors. This summer, visitors to the Anheuser-Busch plant will be able to experience a new, expanded tasting and dining experience, along with several tour options. The new Biergarten will include an indoor and outdoor area offering visitors light fare available for purchase or the ability to sit around a fire pit on crisp New England evenings while enjoying a variety of Anheuser-Busch beers. According to Tom Jokerst, general manager of the Anheuser-Busch Merrimack brewery, there will be four fire pits included in the new Biergarten project. “The new Biergarten will have both indoor and outdoor areas offering guests a place to relax, visit with friends and family and enjoy Anheuser-Busch beers, ei-

The Biergarten, located just to the side of the gift shop where tours originate, will be approximately 3,500 square feet. The indoor area will be able to accommodate 86 guests, and the outdoor area will host as many as 88 visitors. The Biergarten will have a light menu with a few select offerings, initially, to complement the variety of Anheuser-Busch beers available for purchase. The

food will be prepared on-site. “We’ll have 14 beers on draught, including Budweiser in our Budweiser Signature draught tower,” Jokerst says. Jokerst says the company isn’t ready to disclose the cost of the addition, but describes it as “a significant investment from Anheuser-Busch for the Merrimack Tour Center.” The new construction will add yet another level of comfort to visitors, who have a chance to take one of

several tours. The Complimentary Tour brings guests on a 30-45 minute walking tour that follows the seven-step brewing process. Starting at one end of the large gift shop, guides provide an exhaustive history of the company and answer any questions before leading groups through areas of the brewery, including a stroll by the massive tanks that hold a variety of the beer brewed on-site. The Beermaster Tour ($25,) provides a look at the Brew House, Lager Cellar, Packaging Facility, Quality Assurance area and the Finishing Cellar. The Day Fresh Tour is a “seed-to-sip” experience that includes a look inside the Brewhall, the Beechwood Aging Cellar, the Packaging Facility and a sample directly from a Finished Beer Tank. The $10 ticket also includes a souvenir glass. A highlight of a visit to the brewery is a chance to get up-close to one of the high-stepping, powerful Clydesdales. The Clydesdale Hamlet on the grounds of the Anheuser Busch brewery is just a few hundred yards from the Daniel Webster Highway, yet walking through the gates transports visitors to the time when Adolphus III and August Busch, Jr. first presented their father with one of the mighty, noble Clydesdales as a gift to celebrate the end of Prohibition. Since that time

these massive horses have become synonymous with Budweiser, starring in advertisements and serving as an instantly-recognizable symbol of the company. Merrimack is a training facility for the company’s signature horses, and visitors can get an up-close look at these stately animals as they graze in the paddocks nearby, or as they munch on feed in one of the stalls inside. On the first Saturday of each month, guests can take advantage of a photo opportunity with one of the world-famous Clydesdales. In addition to the Biergarten, Anheuser-Busch has also begun work on expanding the brewery itself. “We are excited to begin work on a brewery expansion this spring that will bring some new, diverse capabilities to the brewery,” Jokerst says. “The project will expand our brewing capabilities and increase space for handling grains used in the brewing process.” According to reports, the original expansion was designed to add a total of 55,300-square-feet of warehousing, packaging and brewing space. An expansion of that project, announced earlier this year and approved by the town, include larger plans for a combined 70,035-square-feet of new space. The existing facility is about 600,000 square feet, and currently employs 200 full-time workers. The first phase of the proposed project will be the construction of a brewery and specialty grains addition, which will include a fermentation cellar. Jokerst says he expects phase one to be completed in 2017. The second phase, according to reports, will be the warehousing and packaging building additions, along with a further expansion of the first phase brewery development. Also included, according to plans on file: 37 new parking spaces, underground utilities and a new stormwater management area.
