ou have the long-awaited ring on your finger and the date is set. Ahead is the work — and joy — of planning your wedding. So many details, so many decisions — gown, flowers, reception site and more. It can be overwhelming, but count on us to get you started, provide inspiration and act as a guide along the way. This Fall/Winter issue of New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE will give you tons of ideas for the coming season. You’ll find out what’s trending and what’s not. You’ll see the latest gowns in a historic setting overlooking Lake Sunapee and find out the many ways sunflowers (always a favorite) can be used in a wedding. Plus, you’ll learn about the symbol and ritual of a Jewish wedding. Our “Real NH Weddings” will show you different venues and how to use them creatively. Speaking of venues, check out the list of venues in the state, some 129 of them, with all the details you need to know. Because we can’t get all the information in this one magazine, our website (bridenh.com) has extra features and links to local resources. You can also find us on Facebook at Facebook.com/nhbride. On page 28 is the list of the winners for this year’s Best of BRIDE, the online poll where you can vote for the New Hampshire wedding service providers that offer the best quality, service and artistry. This year, we are changing the timing of Best of BRIDE. In the past, voting has taken place in the spring with results appearing in the Fall/Winter issue. There will be a slight pause between polls — voting for the next Best of BRIDE will begin on September 11, 2017, and conclude on October 30, 2017. Results will appear in the Spring/Summer 2018 issue. Enjoy this special time with your love and, from everyone here, our very best wishes for a wonderful life together.

Barbara Coles Editor P.S. We’re looking for weddings to feature in our Spring/Summer 2017 issue of BRIDE. Although we can use only a limited number in the magazine, we post more online. Interested? Visit bridenh.com to submit your wedding.

Romance Blooms at the Historic Fells Estate PHOTOGRAPHY PHILBRICK photography

One late summer day, we went to “The Fells” in Newbury, an 84-acre estate perched on a hillside overlooking Lake Sunapee. It was once the summer home of John Hay, private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. The estate’s 22-room Colonial Revival home and renowned gardens became the backdrop for our inspiration shoot featuring gorgeous gowns and, as day turned to evening, the elegant details of a wedding celebration.

Vintage Beauty Complemented by the décor of the late-19th-century home, this gown — a lace A-line with a sweetheart neckline and beaded belt that features pearls, sequins, crystals and bugle beads — is stunning. Pearl lace appliqué lays over a layer of silver lace to give the body of the dress a beautiful dimension. Covered buttons span the length of the train and a Chantilly lace three-quarter sleeve pop-over jacket completes the look. The headpiece by designer Bel Aire Bridal — a large crystal brooch on ivory ribbons — gives a soft, yet vintage look to the hair. The cement-colored, three-piece tuxedo features a peak lapel with a satin inset trim and a striped bow tie adds to the vintage feel. A coral pocket square provides a punch of color. Gown shown on previous page: This embroidered soutache lace, fit and flare gown with cap sleeves features a modest illusion Sabrina neckline in front, but sexy illusion V in back. A chapel-length train and satin bridal buttons complete the look. Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal in Bedford bridenh.com | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE

Lovely in Lace An intricate slim-line, metallic Venetian lace gown features off-theshoulder sleeves, which beautifully open the neckline, with pretty hanging lace appliqué that falls on the arm. Sequined lace appliqué is also scattered across the skirt and finished with a scalloped lace hem. The gold, pearl and crystal half-halo hairpiece, by Malis-Henderson, gives a whimsical look to the hair. Designed by Ike Behar for Sarno and Sons, the navy twill, three-piece, trimfit tuxedo adorned by satin black lapels and pockets is an ultra-luxurious and modern look. A champagne-colored bow tie provides a neutral pop of color to match the bride’s gown. The abundant flowers in the bouquet, created by Ivy & Aster Floral Design, took inspiration from the extensive Colonial gardens at The Fells. Gown available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

Dramatic Flair This vintage mermaid-style gown with cascading ribbon and sequin throughout the bodice and skirt hugs the body perfectly. Delicate spaghetti straps and full tulle skirt, mixed with a low V back and plunging neckline, provide a mix of sexy and whimsical. The cathedral-length, butterfly-edge veil by Malis-Henderson matches any bridal gown. The 1/4-inch satin edging provides just enough detail for a soft, yet dramatic look. A Fairy-tale Setting A soft, romantic, garden-inspired look — that’s what stylist Jessica Raymond created to match the stunning outdoor spaces at The Fells. The wedding table was a mix of interior and exterior decorative pieces with a delicate palette of gold, pinks and lavender. To provide a floral accent for the wedding table, Sara Severance of Ivy & Aster Floral Design used her love of unexpected texture combinations and lush, natural vegetation as her muse in designing this garden wedding. Delicate pink and cream flowers stand in contrast to vibrant green and aubergine leaves and vines. Garden flowers seasonal to New Hampshire include peonies, dahlias, hydrangea, astilbe, cosmos and veronica. Those flowers are enhanced by imported David Austin garden roses, nerine, lilies and protea for an overflowing and extravagant, yet spontaneous and fresh-picked arrangement. Details such as accenting thistle, blooming oregano and jasmine vine finish the look.

Dreamy Desserts An ivy-covered stone wall complete with a trickling fountain make an ideal backdrop for an elaborate dessert display. A spread on an antique bureau features a threetiered naked cake with lush florals by For Goodness Cakes. Completing the outdoor evening celebration are fresh seasonal berries, strawberryfrosted donuts with coconut shavings, multi-layered blueberry cheesecake shooters, sweet little whoopie pies and warm fruit-filled pie pops. This fit and flare gown with a sweetheart, strapless neckline has a bold lace overlay atop a cocoacolored lining for a very bohemian and vintage feel. A coffee-colored satin belt is finished with a beautifully ornate Art Deco piece at the center front. Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

Antique Illumination As day gives way to night, a quiet spot for the bride on a flowerbedecked swing hung from a beech tree is illuminated with tall silver lanterns. A refreshing lavender lemonade beverage station atop antique whiskey barrels gives a rustic touch to the romantic setting. Brightly illuminated lanterns lead the way.

THE DAZZLING

Sunflower Who isn’t captivated by the sunflower? Vibrant, strong, with pleasing symmetry. Not only that — sunflowers, as they’re growing, turn toward the sun all day long, following it east to west. A perfect symbol for the start of a new life. No wonder they’re a favorite for brides.

unflowers

have pizzazz.

They offer a bright accent to whatever flower arrangements you have at your wedding. In these pages, they’re set against a profusion of contrasting blooms — daisy poms, blue thistle, veronica, bunny tail, cottage yarrow and solidago — complemented by soft, rustic textures of eucalyptus, bay leaves and Italian ruscus. Using that combination, the designers at La Flora Couture worked with stylist Sorrell Downing to create a symphony of sunflower styles to inspire you — a flower-bedecked welcome sign and a rustic guest book, for starters. Both were created by Tekton Treasures.

Walking on Sunshine How about shoes to match the bride’s bouquet? Here, Converse sneakers that can add some spunk and comfort to your day. And for the groom? A viking pom, veronica and eucalyptus wrapped in brown muslin for a boutonnière — and even sunflower cufflinks.

The table was set delicately to tame the vibrance of the sunflower yellow and give a more romantic feel. Another of the wedding papers — the menu with a single, bright sunflower — sits atop a square plate with a printed garland of sunflowers. A dish towel is used as a napkin, now a popular trend. The flatware is hammered gold. Tekton Treasures supplied the table number. Cupcakes, with, of course, a sunflower and displayed on a wine barrel rib, are offered for dessert, along with seltzer with orange on a yellow-and-white striped placemat.

TRADITION TRADITION TRADITION TRADITION The Jewish faith teaches that a wedding ceremony transforms two souls into one new, complete soul. It is a ceremony filled with symbol and ritual. Curious? We were. This inspiration shoot will take you through the ceremony, starting with the Veiling, or Badeken, and ending with the Seudah, or Festive Meal, that celebrates the new union.

styling by events by sorrell / Photos by kendal j. bush photography

VEILING

Before the ceremony, the groom goes to the bride’s room, accompanied by family and friends. There, according to ancient custom, at the prompt of the rabbi, the bride’s veil is removed by the groom. It’s said to symbolize a number of things: modesty, the importance of character rather than physical appearance, and the groom’s commitment to clothe and protect his wife.

68 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com

CHUPPAH The couple stands under a canopy, symbolic of dwelling together. It’s open on all four sides, just as, according to the Hebrew Bible, Abraham and Sarah had their tent open to welcome people unconditionally. It’s also open to the sky to mark God’s blessing to Abraham that his children “should be as the stars of the heaven.” Acting as a backdrop is a portion of the wellknown Song of Solomon from the Hebrew Bible, which tells of ”the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy.”

bridenh.com | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE

69

KETUBAH The marriage contract, the ketubah, outlines the couple’s responsibilities to each other. It is read aloud and handed to the groom who presents it to the bride. They then sign it.

70 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com

DEDICATION AND RING EXCHANGE: The Kiddushin makes formal and sanctifies the ceremony. A cup of wine, a symbol of joy in the Jewish tradition, is shared as a blessing of the betrothal. The groom places the ring on the forefinger of the bride’s right hand, saying, “Behold, you are betrothed unto me with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel.” Rings often have a verse from the Song of Solomon engraved in them. It reads: “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; he feedeth among the lilies.” THE SEVEN BLESSINGS: A second cup of wine is poured and seven blessings — “Blessed art Thou Lord our God, king of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine” is one — are recited, often by several people chosen by the bride and groom. During the blessings, the bride circles the groom seven times to symbolize their new life together, and the wholeness that they cannot attain separately. PRIESTLY BLESSING: After the Seven Blessings, the couple drinks from the cup again, and then the groom breaks the cup with his right foot to symbolize that even the most blessed moment is tempered by sorrow about the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

THE FESTIVE MEAL

SEUDAH

The couple’s marriage is celebrated with a Seudat Mitzvah, or Festive Meal, as well as dancing. At this wedding feast, a table runner inscribed with a portion of the Song of Solomon runs the length of the table, with vibrant glass bottle accessories as statement centerpieces.
