Y We enjoy creating unique and artistic custom floral arrangements

for your dream wedding. Schedule a consultation to create your dream-day

ou’re engaged, the person of your dreams by your side. Ahead is your big day, a day you hope is magical, sprinkled with fairy dust. Creating that magic takes a lot of planning, and we’re here to provide the inspiration to get you started. New Hampshire Magazine put together this Spring/Summer issue of BRIDE to give you lots of ideas (look for the Fall/Winter issue in September for more). We hope you’ll see us as a trusted friend who will offer inspiration, feed your creativity and help guide you every step of the way. In this issue you’ll find out what’s trending and what’s not. You’ll see the latest wedding gowns at the elegant Currier Museum of Art, learn about the kinds of cakes and fillings couples are choosing, and be inspired by some modern twists on using flowers. Because we can’t squeeze all the information into this one magazine, check out our website (bridenh.com) for extra features and links to local resources. You can also find us on Facebook at Facebook.com/nhbride. And starting April 1, the online Best of BRIDE poll begins for voting for the New Hampshire wedding service providers that offer the best quality, service and artistry. The results will be announced in the Fall/Winter 2016 issue. Enjoy this special time with your love and, from everyone here, our very best wishes for a wonderful life together.

colors Colors of the Year Each year experts at Pantone choose a color of the year. For 2016 they actually picked two — rose quartz and serenity. This combination is simply perfect for romantic weddings. The applications are endless — from bridesmaid dresses and flowers to décor and rose-tinted cocktails.

hair Combs Traditional veils, while still popular, are being replaced more and more with flowers, birdcage veils and headbands. Now look for romantic, low-swept hairstyles accented with elaborate combs. This “Winter Garden Comb” from BHLDN is adorned with Swarovski crystals and glass pearls. bhldn.com

Beyond Invitations Calligraphy is jumping off the page and onto place settings, the tops of cakes and backs of chairs. Laser-cut wooden phrases for cake toppers, place “cards” for tables and much more can be painted any color to match the décor or left as plain wood for a more understated look. GOLDEN AURA PHOTOGRAPHY

Courtney Frazier wanted to make the champagne toast “something special” when she married Justin Kerman at the Monadnock Berries Farm in Troy. She decided to add an elegant touch to their glasses with rosebud ice cubes. “I made them by cutting small rosebuds at the base and putting them in ice cube trays with a few leaves,” she says. “I filled them with water and froze them. It was simple.” Simply beautiful.

Retro Lighting Sometimes the old becomes new again

A Perfect Smile for Your Special Day!

Thomas Edison would no doubt be surprised that his light bulb — bare with an exposed filament — is now a favorite of couples for reception lighting. The circa 1890 bulb has the trendy industrial look — perfect for a wedding in an old mill. Or a barn. Or anywhere, really. And, of course, what could be better for a vintage wedding?

Hang clusters of the lights at different heights over the reception table. Use them in strings to create a backdrop for the ceremony. Or use the globestyle Edison bulbs to line tents or market-style in other reception areas. The amber glow of the element creates a warm, welcoming light in any space.

Sweet Sentiments IT’S CALLED A PROPOSAL BOX — AN ARTFUL AND DELICIOUS WAY TO POP THE QUESTION Inside are bonbons made from the finest chocolate; outside are the faces of a couple and words of true love inscribed by Master Chocolatier Richard Tango-Lowy of Dancing Lion Chocolate (dancinglionchocolate.com). The proposal box was inspired by a bronze sculpture that portrays “The Wedding Mystery” with a short tale, shown below, created by artist and storyteller Teresa Moorehouse. The Wedding Mystery witnessed by the three fates bring the gift of life lived completely. If you keep your eyes open when you make love, you will see who really lives inside of each other; the soulful one, the one you will always love and the one you will always forgive.

Create a Buzz An espresso bar is the perfect complement to your wedding cake Here’s a great addition to your reception — a barista serving up handcrafted coffees. Not only does it provide a sophisticated way to finish a meal and enhance your dessert course, it also provides an element of entertainment. photo by Underwood Photography

“Guests are very excited that they can get a custommade coffee drink at a wedding,” says David Salzman, owner of Espresso Dave’s Specialty Coffee Catering of Portsmouth.” They’re surprised by the European quality of our coffee and ingredients, and by the great care we take to make each and every cup.” Salzman, who pioneered espresso bar catering in New England, says carts are preferred for informal weddings. For formal weddings, a skirted table to match the event décor or theme is preferred. Beyond that, he says couples are asking for weddingthemed drinks, espresso shots at the start of the reception, Grab & Go late-night mini-cappuccinos and espresso martinis. “Our service creates a café atmosphere, “Salzman says, “including the aroma and the sounds.” He adds that an espresso bar can be cost-effective because it allows for closing the bar earlier. It can also reduce liability insurance costs.

• •

Coffee drinks can be named for you, a favorite place or hobby. A monogram, wedding theme or message can be inscribed on the Original Beverage Topper that Dave Salzman invented — a thin, edible disk that floats on the surface of the coffee or other beverage. Coffees can be embellished with custom stencils — a monogram, wedding date, heart or other symbol of your love — and sprinkled with cinnamon or cocoa. Custom-order coffee mugs and glasses with your monogram or wedding theme to serve as favors.

Another advantage, according to Salzman, “Caffeinated people are happy people.”

• Be flexible. We had dress malfunctions, our musician was combatting a fever, and I was oddly concerned about the amount of leaves at the wedding site. My friends raked the leaves, the dress was fixed and the musician played beautifully. • Do things your way, not someone else’s. • Do as much preparation as early as you can. Free time is harder to come by as you get closer to the big day. • On the day of the wedding, don’t stress. What’s done is done. Put all your energy into having an amazing day. • Have a first look. Cool Treat

A great favor for a winter wedding

Who doesn’t love peppermint bark? The crisp taste of candy cane on chocolate is everyone’s favorite (and probably has been since they were a child). This favor from Jacques Fine European Pastries (jacquespastries. com) is made of both dark and white chocolate with peppermint oil added. The dark tempered chocolate is laid down thin on a plastic sheet and, before it sets, the white tempered chocolate is laid on top. The broken peppermint pieces are sprinkled on top of the white chocolate. Once all the chocolate is set it is broken into smaller pieces. Fun, yummy and nostalgic.

PhotoZomb

THERE ARE BRIDEZILLAS (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) AND THEN THERE ARE THE REAL THING The bride loved zombies, so, of course, she wanted one in her wedding photos. No problem, said her photographer Kendal Bush of Kendal J. Bush Photography (kendaljbush.com). The couple — Kim and Charlie — set the scene on a side street in Keene. Their wedding party joined in. Then Bush went to work. With a bit of wizardry and a computer, voilà! A zombie. “It was a fun collaboration with a bride with a wild sense of humor,” says Bush.

Picture Perfect Looks AT THE CURRIER MUSEUM OF ART It is a place of beauty — not only are there magnificent artworks at the Currier, but grand architecture as well. That makes it the perfect venue to display gorgeous gowns and the accoutrements of a wedding feast. As inspiration for color and design, we used the well-known Impressionist painting, “Mercie Cutting Flowers,” by New Hampshire artist Edmund Tarbell.

Edmund Charles Tarbell American, 1862-1938 Mercie Cutting Flowers, 1912 Oil on canvas 33 1/2 in. x 27 1/2 in. Partial gift of Henry and Clara Mixter and purchased with funds provided by Henry Melville Fuller and many friends of the Currier,1998.2

ARTISTICALLY INSPIRED

Left: An imperial gown by Ian Stuart adorned by petal decoration with matching jacket and veil (see p. 49).This fitted sweetheart neckline dress is finely finished with a scalloped lace detail trim. Sitting gown above: Strapless A-Line gown by Anne Barge adorned with Alençon lace. A beautifully fitted natural waist bodice and soft, feminine skirt finish off this ethereal look. Standing: Also from Anne Barge, a stunning blush-colored gown with delicate open back and illusion detail. A skirt of soft, flowing ivory and blush organza. Beaded and floral appliqués adorn the bodice for a beautifully feminine finish. Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal in Bedford Using the overall design and color scheme from the Tarbell painting, Marie St. Onge of Paisley Floral Design Studio created a dramatic garland to grace the Currier’s marble staircase. The flowers that anchor the garland and the bouquets on the next page are, says St. Onge, “balanced with a combination of warm and cool tones, textured accents and a variety of foliage with ethereal movement.”

Top: This stunning fitted gown by Ian Stuart has a mermaid skirt covered in soft organza flowers lightly scattered with crystals. A matching cape adds the finishing touch. Left: Strapless taffeta ball gown by Anne Barge in a shade of light blue. This gown brings classic elegance in its shape with touches of modernity in its pin-tucking detail and coloring. Bottom: Soft gazar sweetheart necked and bodice that flows into a ripple effect asymmetric apron front with a romantic flower detail. By Ian Stuart Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

FLORAL PALETTE The colorful cascading bouquet below features both Carpe Diem and Quicksand roses, antique green hydrangea, Nemo ranunculus, blue muscari and forget-me-not flowers. Above, the monochromatic bouquet is comprised of mini green hydrangea, thrichilim and Mondial roses, collared with umbrella fern and bear grass chutes. The bouquet to the left features blue and green hydrangea and green snowball viburnum, accented with Queen Anne’s lace, seeded eucalyptus foliage and satin ribbon tendrils.

ELEGANT ADDITIONS

What could be more elegant than a Celtic harp providing ceremony and reception music? Among the musical styles De Luna Harps offers are traditional, themed and Renaissance. De Luna will even create an original composition for your walk down the aisle. Top hairpiece: Gold filigree hair comb with pearls and crystals, great for an updo. Middle: Silver halo headband adorned with crystal embellishment, a trendy accessory for updos or long, flowy locks. Bottom: Lace and peony hair clip with a hint of sparkle. Opposite page: Magnificent Ian Stuart veil is the perfect match for the dress on page 45. Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

LIGHT AND LUMINOUS

Set designer Lisa Pavlopoulos, who is the events manager at the Currier, created a tablescape with the ethereal look of an Impressionist painting. Using a luminous watercolor palette and mirage chairs, Pavlopoulos provides an inviting setting for a reception feast. The tablecloth is a white satin underlay with Sonoma sheer organza overlay with color accents from the turquoise bengaline napkins. The 13-inch clear pebble glass charger is topped with an eight-inch green glass concentric plate. Seating is designated with Impressionist painting notecards from the Currier Gift Shop. Surrounding the table setting is a variety of crystal floral-etched glassware. The finishing touch — hammered stainless-steel silverware. The apricot Northern Glory cymbidium orchid blooms were used at each table setting to provide warmth to a predominately cool color palette.

WORKS OF ART

An artistically crafted wedding wouldn’t be complete without a beautifully designed meal. Chef Jay Curcio of The White Apron created these dishes especially for the Currier wedding. To the right is butterpoached lobster on a cucumbermelon stack with baby kale encircled by avocado-mango with lemon vinaigrette. Below is roasted beef tenderloin, zucchini and butternut squash, elm mushrooms, cured yellow tomato and confit garlic sauce. The presentation — with careful consideration of color and placement — provides the finishing touch.

54 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com

The Tarbell painting here again provides inspiration for a work of art by Master Chocolatier Richard Tango-Lowy of Dancing Lion Chocolate. More than 50 pineapple persimmon bonbons were crafted and dipped by Tango-Lowy to create the canvas for artistin-residence Katherine Donovan to reproduce “Mercie Cutting Flowers.” Donovan uses tinted cocoa butter for her paints. The vases above are hand-blown and available in a variety of colors at the Currier Museum of Art Gift Shop. The flower arrangements pick up the colors and style of the painting.

of cake

Choosing a cake filling flavor can be daunting — so many to choose from. Maybe you want a flavor that’s fun. Or different. Or a color that matches your design. And, of course, it should be tasty. To help you decide, turn the page to see the flavors that brides choose the most. And on the pages after that are the cakes that brides choose the most. Here they are — all delicious, but each evoking a different mood. This light and refreshing blueberry-lemon is a great choice for spring.

BEYOND THE BOUQUET It’s time to think outside the usual centerpiece. Flowers, greens, succulents and even fruit can be used in fresh, modern ways to create unique décor and tablescapes. To help inspire the modern couple who’s looking for something new, Mary Trombley of Lotus Floral Designs created several scenes.

PHOTOS BY SAGE STUDIOS PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIAL THANKS TO LOFT FIFTY 5 FOR USE OF THE SHOP AND PROPS

THE FOREST TABLE Ideal for a rustic or barn wedding, this tablescape brings the forest to your guests. Moss, succulents, ferns, orchids and wood all come together in a simple color palette of green, tan and white.

66 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com

ANTIQUE PROPS Looking for a vintage/shabby chic look? Consider antique props like those decorated simply here with greens (such as olive branches) and delicate baby’s breath nestled around escort cards.

bridenh.com | New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE

67

CRAZY FOR COLOR Yes, less is more is often the wise choice, but sometimes an explosion of color — especially for a summer or spring wedding — is just the thing. Here colorful vases and pieces of glassware in greens, blues and clear arranged on a mantel combined with a boisterous arrangement create a stunning scene. Also notice the non-floral element — bright orange kumquats add a nice pop.

MIXING ERAS Join yesterday with today to create a whole new look. Here a sweetheart table combines a vintage feel with a modern, yet romantic arrangement.

69

GO VERTICAL Think up! Decorate the walls in a whole new way by thinking vertically. Take your modern look to the next level by utilizing greens and succulents. White orchids also peek out in various spots.

Hanging Arrangements Here a forest “chandelier” is suspended over the table. It adds an unexpected and modern element your guests will love.

70 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com

FUNKY CARD TABLE Here a card table gets splashes of color and whimsy. A dinner and dessert menu is written on a repurposed window pane.
