Finding your passion in a world of careers Unlocking Potential:

My eldest son, home from college in Indiana last spring, joined me for a run.

Our runs together are a powerful way to spend time together whether we are talking or silently letting the miles roll away. This run turned conversational, and the conversation turned to school.

“After three years studying engineering,” I asked him, “do you still like it as much as you did when you started?”

He thought about it for a few hundred feet and then replied, “The more I know, the more I like it. I love it more than I did when I started.”

I was elated. I told him how lucky I thought he was.

For many of us, it’s a struggle to decide what we want to do, or what we want to be.

Or maybe that’s the wrong way to put it. Because when you think about it, we usually know what we want to do, and what we want to be, all along. We want to do those things that please us, that lift us up, and that make it feel like time has vanished in a second. We want to be happy, fulfilled, and feel just the right amount of pressure for our particular nervous system.

What many of us don’t know is what job will accomplish those things for us. Because we don’t know much about the tremendous variety of jobs there are in the world — or what they entail.

When I started college, I knew some things about myself: I loved writing and loved performance but was shy one-on-one. I was curious about a lot of different topics but didn’t have a particular academic passion aside from great books.

I chose an English major as a default and discovered theater freshman year. That turned into a theater concentration, and theater study and performance occupied the lion’s share of the next three years.

During those years, when I thought about what I’d be when I got out, I thought about being a writer. In my loftiest dreams, that meant world famous novelist.

What I never could have predicted then was how all of the things I loved doing, and all of the things that expressed

themselves through my studies in English and theater, would be so integral to the role I have today: magazine publisher and business leader.

I never could have predicted those things, because I simply didn’t know what jobs were out there that demanded skill sets and passions that overlapped on the Venn diagram of things I loved doing. Had I known, my path might have been more direct, certainly less stressful at times. I might have had more confidence in the choices I was making, the way my son is.

That’s why I’m so pleased to bring you this issue of NH Next. Throughout, you’ll find information that can serve as a starting point to dig in and really understand the vast array of opportunities that await you after high school. Follow these clues and keep your mind open to possibilities. From four-year school to community college, to the trades to health care to aviation, there’s so much to discover and so many ways to match your passion, talent and dreams to a rewarding career. Make sure you take advantage of the moment you are in today to really explore, with eyes wide open, the wonderful array of roads that lie open ahead.

Crossroads of Career Choices

As you approach your final years of high school, there’s a lot of pressure to have your life plan figured out. You might be fielding questions from teachers, parents, neighbors or even strangers in the grocery store on what you’re off to do after graduation. With more career choices than ever, it is understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed.

While you’re considering your choices, think about your skills, your interests and the most important things you want to have in your life. You’ll have to weigh realities such as your budget and time availability. Make considerations for expected salary and local cost of living. Where you want to live, or if you want to travel, may also play a role in your decision. NH Next is here to showcase some paths you may not have considered.

ENTERING THE WORKFORCE

Whether you’re looking for a short break from academia or you’d rather never step into a classroom again, entering the workforce might be the path for you. This route can be great for those who want to earn an income right away — avoiding student debt — and start gaining practical experience in their field of interest.

Among the careers you can pursue immediately after graduation are administrative assistant, delivery driver or sales representative. Job openings in these areas are expected to remain stable or grow in the immediate future. Salaries typically range from $35,000 to $60,000 annually, and there are opportunities for advancement, including management or logistics departments, though that may be contingent on continuing career education.

SERVICE PROGRAMS

Another option after high school is joining a military or civilian service program.

The U.S. military accepts qualified individuals (must have a high school diploma or GED and meet a minimum score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery exam) in six branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force. There are vast job roles in each of these branches to meet a variety of interests. Benefits beyond pay include educational reimbursement, housing or room and board stipends, health care and retirement plans.

For those who are interested in national service but don’t want to join the military or don’t meet some of those requirements, there are youth programs through Americorps. Each year, some 200,000 young adults participate in projects that aim to address disaster relief, education, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, public health and veteran services. Members receive a living stipend for the duration of their service, gain professional experience and qualify for education awards.

TRADES TRAINING PROGRAMS

If you have a specific career in mind, you may be able to enter a job training program tailored to that. Skilled trades often include automotive fabrication, construction, electrical, HVAC or precision machining.

Some programs are offered through a community college, a standalone training certification or a union apprenticeship. The core of all the programs, however, focus on hands-on training from industry professionals.

These programs are generally less costly and take less time to complete than a college degree program. Oftentimes you can complete paid work in the field under the supervision of a licensed professional as you complete your training. Many trades are in high demand and offer strong job security and earning potential.

Job openings for tradesmen like electricians, plumbers or HVAC technicians generally have a starting salary from between $37,000 to $55,000 annually. Becoming a master, pursuing a specialization, or opening your own business offers opportunities for advancement and raises.

COLLEGE DEGREE TRACK

College can provide credentials for a variety of academic or specialized careers. Having a degree is increasingly sought after for those seeking to advance to management or leadership roles.

While college degrees do require significant time and financial investments, data from the Social Security Administration shows that college degree holders still out-earn their peers whose highest level of education is high

school. Students can reduce the cost of college education by completing some coursework through dual-enrollment classes while still in high school, or by completing general education courses at a community college before transferring to a four-year school to complete a bachelor’s degree program.

A few options for careers with a college degree that are seeking growth include software development, health care and mechanical engineering. The average salary for these careers can range from $70,000 to more than $100,000.

All of these careers have options for specialization that could connect you with an area of personal interest. For example, software developers might specialize in artificial intelligence or mobile applications. Bachelor-degreeholding health care workers might be registered nurses for a particular hospital department, like pediatrics or emergency medicine, or hospice workers and home health caregivers. Mechanical engineers can work in fields as varied as automotive and aerospace to industrial manufacturing machines.

As you approach high school graduation, you’re at a crossroads of possibilities. As you move in a direction, no matter your choice, you’re bound to encounter speedbumps and detours. You might find a shortcut, or maybe you’ll take the exit ramp and try a new avenue. Many people don’t end up at the destination they first aimed toward.

The important thing is to believe in yourself as you take that next step.

Paying for College

On the surface, figuring out how to pay for a college education may seem like an overwhelming task. Especially as the cost of four-year and two-year degrees continues to rise. he good news is there are many state and federal assistance programs available. The key is understanding what’s available and how to access grants, oans, scholarships and financial aid. Students and parents who do their homework will find a wide variety of education funding products that can help accomplish this goal.

THE “PROMISE” OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The Granite State is blessed with strong community colleges that provide an affordable way to set out on the road to higher education. Associate’s degree credits are transferrable to state and private colleges and universities for students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree. To make attending community college easier, the Community College System of New Hampshire rolled out a Promise Program last academic year. The needs-based Promise Program will help qualified New Hampshire students bridge the gap between grants, scholarships, and the cost of tuition and required comprehensive fees, at all seven of New Hampshire’s community colleges. Students need to complete the federal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), be eligible for a Pell Grant, and enroll in at least six credits per semester. The Community College System of New Hampshire will apply any scholarships and grants first. The Promise Program will cover the remaining costs.

FEDERAL EDUCATION GRANTS

The federal government continues to provide higher education grants to eligible students who attend public or private colleges and universities. Unlike a student loan, grants do not have to be repaid unless a student withdraws from school and owes a refund or fails to complete their service obligation in the case of a federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grant.

Students can apply for the following federal grants:

• Pell Grants

• Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

• Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education ( TEACH) Grants

GOOD GRADES ALWAYS A PLUS

Students who have earned top grades should seek out scholarships offered by the schools they wish to attend. They can also seek out scholarships from a myriad of nonprofit and private organizations. The best place for students to begin their scholarship search is their school’s financial aid office or their high school guidance counselor. The amount of scholarship money a student is awarded will affect the amount of financial aid they can potentially receive from other sources.

• Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants Sources:

FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS: THE HIGHER EDUCATION FUNDING SAFETY NET

For students who may not qualify for scholarships or financial aid, federal student loans offer them a direct pipeline to the funding they need for tuition, books and room and board. According to studentaid. gov, the U.S. Department of Education offers four loan options:

• Direct Subsidized Loans provide financial assistance to qualified undergraduate students who require help in funding their higher education in either colleges or vocational schools.

• Direct Unsubsidized Loans offer financial support to qualifying undergraduate, postgraduate and professional students, without requiring the borrower to demonstrate financial hardship.

• Direct PLUS Loans serve postgraduate students or the parents or guardians of undergraduate students. This can help with expenses not met by other financial aid. Financial need isn’t a consideration, but a credit assessment is mandatory. Those with negative credit records need to fulfill extra conditions.

• Direct Consolidation Loans provide the advantage of merging all federal student loan debts into one consolidated loan under one loan provider.

Undergraduate students can borrow anywhere from $5,500 to $12,500 per year from Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. The amount depends on what year you’re in at school and your dependency status.

Parents of dependent undergraduate students can receive a Direct

PLUS Loan for the remainder of their children’s college costs, which is determined by his or her school and not covered by other financial aid.

As is the case with any loan, students and parents should make sure they follow this advice:

• Know how much you’ve borrowed. Consider how you will repay the loans and how that repayment will affect your finances after school. Student loan payments should be a small percentage of one’s salary. It’s important not to borrow more than you need.

• Research starting salaries in your field . Ask your school for starting salaries of recent graduates in your field of study to get an idea of how much you are likely to earn after you graduate. You can also use the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook or career search tool to research careers and salaries.

• Understand the terms of your loan and keep copies of your loan documents. When you sign your promissory note, you are agreeing to repay the loan according to the terms of the note even if you don’t complete your education, can’t get a job after you complete the program or didn’t like the education you received.

• Make payments on time. You are required to make payments on time even if you don’t receive a bill, repayment notice or a reminder. You must pay the full amount required by your repayment plan, as partial payments do not fulfill your obligation to repay your student loan on time.

Consider a career in health care:

Make a difference in your community

Closeyour eyes and think about how your future could impact your community. Health care careers have a vast number of options, ranging from LNA, MNA, phlebotomy and practical nursing.

A licensed nursing assistant (LNA) helps patients with activities of daily living and other health care needs. LNAs can work in hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities. They may also provide health services to patients who need assistance with daily tasks at home. You have the ability to grow personally and professionally within this field. Here are a few of the benefits of becoming a licensed nursing assistant:

1. Job Stability

Something you will never have to worry about as an LNA is employment. The projected growth of this position is strong, which means there is an increasing need for LNA’s to join the field.

2. Flexibility

When you’re looking for a job, flexibility can be an important factor, depending upon your personal situation. Additionally, having a worklife balance is important to everyone’s mental health — finding a career with flexibility makes that all the more possible.

3. Emotional Rewards

As an LNA, you will have a chance to impact the lives of others based on the care you provide. When you see the importance of your role in someone else’s life, it can be a very rewarding experience.

4. Affordability

Becoming licensed as a nursing assistant is not expensive in comparison to other career choices. Furthermore, many companies are dedicated to educational advancement for their employees through tuition-assistance programs. By taking advantage of these benefits, you can build your skill set and résumé throughout your career.

5. Opportunities to Specialize

While getting experience as an LNA, you’ll have the chance to explore different specializations and certifications as well as the job choices they entail. You may be surprised by the opportunities available!

6. Job Market Growth

The job market for health care continues to expand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 209,400 openings for nursing assistants and orderlies are projected each year, on average, over the next decade. That’s a significant number of potential employment choices.

7. Opportunity to Travel

As an LNA, you will have the opportunity to travel throughout your career. Your employment options range from single-location positions to contract positions based on need. You’ll have the opportunity to work in your area of expertise with the flexibility to travel and experience new things both personally and professionally.

8. Continued Education

As an LNA, you’ll work side by side with registered nurses and people from other medical fields every day. This contact could inspire you to explore opportunities for further education.

A Rewarding Career Path

These are just some of the reasons becoming an LNA can change your life. You will have the opportunity to make an impact — not just in your own life but in the lives of others, too. The ability to see how your efforts affect other people can be indescribably rewarding.

Thinking about an LNA career in New Hampshire? To work as an LNA, it is necessary to attend a training program and successfully pass an exam administered by a government regulatory agency. LNA Health Careers offers programs to do just that.

Electrical Lineworker Pre-Apprentice Certificate Program

Eversource, in partnership with New Hampshire’s Manchester Community College (MCC), offers a one-year certificate program (two semesters) that prepares graduates for a lineworker apprenticeship — providing a direct pathway into an exciting and rewarding career

Apprentices give new meaning to the term ”upward mobility” in New Hampshire.

in the electric power industry. About half of Eversource apprentices are MCC graduates, including nine out of 10 employees in the last Transmission class.

The hands-on certification program includes in-classroom learning at MCC and laboratory courses at their on-campus training facility. Students learn electrical theory, basic math, CPR and safety, preparing them for employment in the electrical lineworker field.

In addition to the in-classroom coursework, students learn how to climb a utility pole, as well as how to use equipment and tools to safely complete overhead and underground construction. During the second semester, students complete a paid internship with Eversource. A total of 24 credit hours are completed consecutively over a two-semester period for the certificate. Graduates of the Pre-Apprentice Certificate Program may also transfer credits to MCC’s electrical technology or technical studies associate degree programs.

Information sessions are held at MCC to provide prospective students with background information on the program and introduce them to the skills necessary for this program. Prior to registration, MCC requires students to attend an information session, pass a basic math exam, participate in an oral interview, and pass a physical fitness assessment to qualify for enrollment. With successful completion of those steps, students are considered for acceptance into the MCC Lineworker Certificate Program. Class size is limited to 12 students per class, and a selection committee

makes all final determinations. If students do not have their CDL Class A license, they may take driver’s training at MCC.

Field Training Apprenticeship

The Field Training organization is a unique and progressive partnership between the Transmission Training, Distribution and Electric Operations departments to produce the most highly trained and skilled apprentices in the nation — employees who are committed to the highest ethical standards, and who are leaders in our company and community.

Field Training covers the first 18 months of an overhead lineworker’s apprenticeship. The program is a combination of classroom, hands-on training and on-the-job training. The on-the-job training is done with fully qualified overhead lineworkers who are led and directed by field training supervisors, transmission supervisors and operations distribution supervisors.

The work performed provides ideal training opportunities and is appropriate for each apprentice’s skill and experience level. Apprentices receive weekly and monthly written and verbal evaluations and continual feedback regarding job and classroom performance. Evaluations and feedback are tools to close any skill, knowledge and performance gaps that may exist.

What do you do when college isn’t the answer?

Mark’s here to show why building things can be fun, too.

Mark Leone, a 2024 graduate of Salem High School, wasn’t always sure about his professional future. Like many of his peers, he had been surrounded by the idea that college was the only route to success. “I always preached college because that’s how the school system works,” Mark recalls. However, his perspective changed when he attended the New Hampshire Construction Career Days in 2023. Coming from a family with no background in the trades, Mark was uncertain whether it was the right path for him. But he blazed his own trail to his future by finding a career that aligned with his passion for working hard, having fun and making a positive impact.

What truly captivated him was the realization that construction was more than just manual labor. “My internship really showed me the ins and outs of construction. I got field knowledge and office experience. It showed me both sides of the industry,” he explains. Through this experience,

Hammering out a future:

Mark’s

journey from classroom to construction

Mark learned safety operations and discovered his enthusiasm for installing drywall, solidifying his interest in the trade.

During his internship, Mark worked on a major project at Tuscan Village, where he learned valuable lessons in collaboration, discipline and hands-on training. The training stood out in particular. “The foreman, Oscar, is a really good guy who taught me everything I know. He was so easy to work with, such a great teacher, and that really pulled me in. Working with people you like, having fun at the same time, and contributing to a huge project really means something to me,” Mark reflects. Optiline Enterprises doesn’t just throw its interns into the field — they educate them, providing the skills and support needed to succeed.

Mark also discovered an unexpected benefit of working in construction: the camaraderie.

“Everyone in construction is happy for the most part,” he says. “Everyone has a good time doing what they are best at, making money and making friends … that’s what it’s all about.”

Now working full-time at Optiline, Mark is

passionate about encouraging other young people to explore careers in the trades. “What I enjoy most is the impact I make,” he says. Mark believes in educating high school graduates about the opportunities the trades can offer.

“There are a lot of high schoolers out there who are scared of the trades because they either think they won’t make money, or they won’t be happy. Trust me, I was scared, too. Hard work pays off. Money will come, and happiness will come with finding something that makes you happy. Find a trade that really pulls you in.”

One of the key benefits of working in the construction industry, according to Mark, is job security, and he loves it. “There’s such a need for skilled workers right now,” he says. “Whether it’s building homes or ensuring people have power, it’s a job that’s always going to be in demand.”

Construction also fosters creativity and problemsolving. As Mark puts it, “It lets you be creative while also following a set of rules. It’s fun. If you make a mistake, it’s okay — own up to it, learn from it and move on.”

Mark’s advice to young people is straightforward: “College isn’t for you? Awesome, try a trade. A trade isn’t for you? There are other trades — give it a shot. You could use the information you learn in so many real-life scenarios.” He also stresses the importance of finding a company that fits you. “Optiline is a great company, great people, truly a family. Please join and have fun!”

Mark’s journey is a powerful testament to how the trades can offer young people a fulfilling, stable and creative career. As he passionately says, “Everyone should try a trade once in their life. To me, it’s like giving back.”

Mark’s enthusiasm and commitment have not gone unnoticed. Tommy Bolduc, the owner of Optiline Enterprises, witnessed his dedication and passion firsthand. “It’s inspiring and impressive to see someone who had zero knowledge a year ago now training his peers. It’s exciting. It’s all part of our mission to positively impact lives in the construction industry through opportunities,” says Tommy.

SUCCESS STORY

The Electrical Trade:

Career opportunities beyond the wires

Today, high school graduates have more career path choices than ever before. Technology and innovation have expanded traditional roles in many fields — the electrical trade being one of them. Students are starting to see how an interest or passion, seemingly unrelated to the industry, can lead them to a career in the electrical trade.

The reasons why a graduate might choose a particular career path or field are changing. Previously, we saw students entering the electrical trade because they wanted to secure a financially rewarding career without incurring student loans, or because they wanted to follow in the footsteps of a family member, or simply because they were interested in electrical work. While these incentives may still influence an individual’s choice, today’s students pursue a career in the electrical field for other reasons as well.

One such individual, Brian Harlow, our virtual design construction (VDC) specialist, found that his interest in computers and gaming opened a path to the electrical trade. The VDC title is new to our industry, as we continue to incorporate the latest technologies into the business. When Brian graduated from high school, he was unsure of his career path. Despite his interest in computers and gaming, he wasn’t sure he could make a living pursuing this track. He decided to explore certificate courses at a local NH community college, and soon realized his aptitude for computers and gaming could transfer to building information modeling (BIM). He reached out to Interstate for a computer aided design (CAD) operator position and his journey

began. Ten years later, Brian is proud to have used on-the-job training and self-learning to advance into his current role.

We are seeing more and more stories like Brian’s in the electrical trade. For example, a student who is interested in interior design might use that passion and experience to shift into an electrical detailing, coordinator or engineering support career. We’re even seeing students choosing to become electricians, because they are motivated by a passion for green initiatives and want a fulfilling career that will promote electric charging stations, hydro and wind power, along with lighting controls and sensors to reduce electric use.

As a woman in the industry, I am proud to see more women entering the electrical trade. Today, there is more diversity in the workforce and in the industry than ever before. This uptrend in diversity makes me incredibly happy. It’s rewarding to see students gravitating towards a career that aligns with their interests and passions, not their gender. Add to this the increased utilization of technology in the industry, and we see an everbroadening path for individuals to pursue a career in the electrical trade. They realize the opportunities in the electrical field go beyond wires.

What we do:

Founded in 1975 as a single truck collection service, Casella has grown its operations to provide solid waste collection and disposal, transfer, recycling and organics services to more than 1 million residential, commercial, municipal, institutional and industrial customers, and provides professional resource management services to over 10,000 customer locations in more than 40 states. Today, the Casella team has grown by more than 30% since 2022 and now employs nearly 5,000 people. With a cultural commitment to personal growth and continuous improvement, our team is constantly evolving and advancing in service to each other, our customers and our communities.

Why are we a great company to work for?

The cornerstone of our approach to people, culture and belonging is our commitment to inclusion in our recruiting and career path programs. In 2023, 44% of non–entry level positions were filled through internal promotions.

Our ideal candidate:

The Casella culture and our Core Values provide a road map for our continued success. The hard-working men and women of the waste and recycling industry keep our communities clean, recover valuable resources and keep society running.

Many of the leaders at Casella today received their start as front-line employees and have forged a rewarding path of success by taking advantage of the opportunities provided to them along the way. Whether your path begins in the driver’s seat, the maintenance shop, the Customer Care Center, or any of our other entry-level roles, the future holds many opportunities for a rewarding career with purpose.

We offer great training and leadership development.

In 2023, nearly 100% of our managers participated in self-guided sessions in our new training software program. They received coaching on many relevant topics, including preventing discrimination and harassment, creating a positive work environment, ethical leadership and more. Combined with in-person training, this led to more than 2,000 training sessions being completed.

We are inclusive and offer multi-language opportunities.

After identifying language barriers to advancement, we continue to support Spanish-speaking recycling facility employees in pursuing their hoisting licenses and earning leadership certificates. We have also hosted basic Spanish classes for English-speaking managers.
