without the countless hours, donations, and resources contributed by all who support us. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated community of individuals and businesses backing our association.
Proceeds from ticket sales directly support our workforce initiative, which is focused on inspiring the next generation of trade professionals. We work closely with the Huot Tech Center and many Lakes Region high schools to ignite students' interest in learning a trade. Through mentoring, educational scholarships, and toolbox awards, we continue to grow programs in building construction and HVAC. Our efforts in helping students build and sell affordable homes contribute to a strong and sustainable economy for future generations.
Thank you for supporting our local economy and the development of our workforce. We hope you enjoy the Parade!

HUOT TECHNICAL CENTER: Students at the Huot Technical Center learn many skills in building an entire house from start to finish. The program allows first-year students a good foundation of learning about the trades, safety, and tools. The second-year students begin to master skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. Students from seven district high schools attend Huot Tech Center's “in-the-shop job site” where they learn framing, siding, plumbing, heating, window installation, and nearly every step of constructing a home. The job site is a learning-rich environment, and it's also one of the best places for young people to find inspiration and discover new talents.
LAKES REGION BUILDERS & REMODELERS ASSOCIATION: A group of construction industry professionals partner with students to fund, mentor, and start building the next generation of skilled laborers. LRBRA provides all funding for materials for each year's build, mentor students, provide scholarships and training opportunities. lakesresgionbuilders.com
DID YOU KNOW PARADE VISITORS ARE HELPING TOO? The ticket sales from the Parade of Homes goes towards funding future student-built homes! The goal is to continue to provide valuable training for the students and provide much-needed housing for a buyer that already had land and could get the site-work completed to fit the build. Trade members from the the Lakes Region Builders & Remodelers Association and businesses from the community provide materials sometimes at cost, or even free, to support the trades. The net proceeds from the home's sale helps fund the next Huot build project.
WANT TO HELP? If you are interested in helping with material donations, funding to scholarships for the trades or have time to help in person, please contact LRBRA.
Building Advice
Incorporate renewable energy in your home
Energy efficiency remains one of the most desired components among new and prospective homebuyers. In 2020, the National Association of Home Builders surveyed more than 3,000 homebuyers, both recent and prospective, on the types of features they prefer to have in their homes, including eco-friendly components and designs, and that still rings true today. Some of the most requested features buyers want to see in home plans are ENERGY STAR-rated windows and appliances, efficient lighting, and an ENERGY STAR rating for the whole house.
Benefits of renewable energy
Integrating renewable energy in homes can have both financial and environmental benefits. Not only do energy-efficient systems decrease the home’s carbon footprint, but materials such as solar panels pay for themselves. So even though they cost more up-front, they can save money over the life of the system.
Steps to implement
Any new home construction or home remodel requires a whole-house systems approach, which considers the house as an energy system with interdependent parts, each of which affects the performance of the entire system.
When planning a remodel, first conduct an energy audit to find how the home uses energy in its current state and determine how to cut energy use and cost.
Common strategies to incorporate electrification measures include:
• Sizing the electrical panels to accommodate an EV charger
• Providing a charging outlet on the home
• Building an all-electric home
• Designing homes with electrificationready features for future conversion
Use water-saving technology
A water-driven design approach can help enable continued community development and home building throughout the country. Total hydrology planning is a methodology to identify and utilize all water resources on a project site. It uses strategies best suited to the relationship between the climate and sitespecific conditions of a project to achieve a balance between a site’s water supply and demand.
Water-conserving fixtures such as toilets, showerheads, and faucets are among the top green features. Incorporating these and other water-focused strategies such as ENERGY STAR appliances and structural plumbing can help save time and money and can help home owners save on their utility bills.

5 Essential Fall Maintenance Tasks for Your Home
With the summer season in the rearview mirror, now is the time to focus on a few, simple home-maintenance projects to prepare for the fall weather. Incorporating these home maintenance tasks will help increase the longevity of your home.
Here are a few projects to check off your to-do list this month:
Fill in Air Gaps
Experts recommend inspecting areas where building materials may have pulled apart and caulk or seal any cracks that have formed. The best place to start is by checking around roof and foundation lines, chimneys and where pipes protrude through walls or roofs.
Add Heat-Absorbing Insulation
The most efficient way to stop heat loss is by installing ceiling and roof insulation with an R-value of approximately [insert appropriate R-value for your region of the country]. The R-value refers to the ability of any material to resist the passage of heat.
Weatherstrip Your Windows
Inspect your windows by looking for cracks around glass, sashes and window frames. Experts recommend repairing any broken windows before applying any weatherstripping materials.
Clean Gutters and Clear Downspouts
Be sure to clean gutters thoroughly and pay special attention to elbows and bends in the downspouts. Keep hangers fastened securely and plug any holes and cracks. Touch up any sections showing signs of rust with rust-proof paint.
Inspect Your Heating Unit
Make sure ducts and pipes located in unheated spaces are insulated. Dirt streaks around your ductwork, especially near the seams, are evidence of leaks. Have your heating unit checked and cleaned by a professional.
Performing routine home maintenance is essential to keep energy bills low, protect your investment, keep your family safe, and prolong the life of your home.
Design Tips
Making Something New Again
Whether it’s a dresser or a pillow, before you get rid of something from your home, run it through the following test: ask yourself if it is good quality, well made, sturdy, beautiful, valuable, or sentimental. If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then move to the next phase of the test and ask yourself the “can it be” questions. Can it be painted? Moved to another space? Reupholstered? Covered? Used differently somehow? Sometimes all it takes is painting or replacing the legs of a table, covering a comfortable chair with a beautiful throw, wallpapering the back wall of a bookcase, reupholstering an adorable bench and moving it from a bedroom to a foyer, or changing the covers on your throw pillows. We also love the idea of using an antique dresser as a bathroom vanity or kitchen island. The possibilities are endless. So, before you toss an item aside, give it a chance to become something new.
We love white, but color and texture are too fun to leave out. Here are some ideas for counteracting the “all white everything” trend. In the kitchen, select new hardware with copper or bone inlay, or draw attention upward to a new light fixture that is unique and eye-catching. You can add a warm wood feature such as a decorative tray or fruit bowl or upgrade small appliances, which now come in so many colors and finishes. In the living room or bedroom, add warmth with a wood-framed mirror or floor basket filled with colorful blankets. Add dimension and texture with a rug made from jute, or new throw pillow covers or drapes with a special trim. Using wallpaper on the inside of a bookcase or closet is a simple project with a powerful impact. You can transform your white space by adding color and texture, letting your unique style shine without remodeling or making over the entire space.

How to Spot a Water-Quality Problem
4 signs your home needs water treatment
The quality of your water affects the food you cook, how your skin and hair feel and, in some cases, can pose a health threat to you and your family. Because water touches nearly every room in your home, it also affects how long your appliances, fixtures, and plumbing last. How do you know if your water is safe for your family and home? A water-quality problem isn’t always visible, but here are some telltale signs.
1. Water has an odor.
If your water has a rotten egg smell, you may have a higher than normal level of hydrogen sulfide gas. While the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas is not a health issue, it dramatically affects your quality of life.
2. Water is discolored or bad tasting.
If your water is cloudy, murky, tinged with color, contains a metallic, bitter, salty, or other off-taste, it may contain contaminants that
should be removed. Quality water should be clear to the eye and have no specific taste.
3. Water is staining clothes and surfaces.
Some water contaminants can produce stains on objects they come into contact with. These stains can appear on clothes after a washing machine cycle, dishes, and silverware cleaned by a dishwasher, and plumbing surfaces like toilet bowls, bathtubs, and sinks.
4. Plumbing fixtures and surfaces have noticeable buildup.
That crusty white substance on your shower head is caused by hard water. Hard water attacks plumbing fixtures and surfaces. It can also shorten the life span of any appliance that uses water. Additionally, if your soap doesn’t lather well or bathing makes your skin and hair feel dry, you probably have hard water.
If you think your home needs water treatment, or you have questions about the quality of your water, contact the certified water specialists at Secondwind Water Systems.
