CERTIFICATION EXPLAINED

TAKING SAFETY TO NEW HEIGHTS

We’ve all heard the saying, Dress for the slide, not the ride. But how do you actually know your gear is up to the task of protecting you when things go sideways? The answer is CE certification.

WHAT IS A CE RATING?

Originally established in 1993, “CE” stands for Conformité Européenne, which is French for European Conformity. The CE mark indicates that a manufactured good meets standards as set by the European Union for the health and safety of the public. Although a CE mark can be applied to a multitude of products, CE Certification guides motorcyclists to choose garments that have been independently tested in a controlled environment to a measured set of safety criteria.

The standards EN 17092-2:2020 through EN 17092-6:2020 (2 through 6) establish the specific test methods required to achieve its CE rating. These tests cross a variety of different attributes of a piece of a gear, including but not limited to abrasion resistance, impact absorption, rotational cut resistance, tear strength, seam strength, wash/wear, and more. Jackets, boots, gloves and pants all have different sets of tests, thresholds, and zones of impact for testing. Once a piece of gear has been fully tested and evaluated, it will be awarded a certain level of CE rating, depending on its performance.

You cannot self-test and self-proclaim a CE rating; it must be tested and awarded by an official testing facility.

THE CLASSES

There are five levels of protective Classes, from the most minimal, Class C, to the most protective, Class AAA.

Class C garments are meant to hold impact armour in place, and do not meet minimum abrasion resistance protection. Class B garments meet Class A abrasion resistance protection standards, but do not have impact protection. It is recommended that Class B and Class C garments are paired together for quality protection.

Class A garments meet the minimum necessary required protection levels for both impact and abrasion as determined by CE regulations. Class A is considered the minimum level of CE protection by riders.

Class AA garments offer a greater degree of protection from impact and abrasion, using materials and constructions that meet higher requirements than Class A and below. They typically offer protection against the risks of the greatest diversity of riding activities, often without the weight and ergonomic restrictions of a Class AAA garment.

Class AAA garments are the highest level of CE rating that a piece of motorcycle gear can achieve in terms of impact protection and abrasion resistance. This is typically found in full leather racing suits, although riding jeans and jackets can meet these standards.

DOES CE ARMOUR MAKE A GARMENT CE RATED?

One common misconception is that if the armour is CE rated, it’s a certified garment. That’s not the case. Armour is certified separately to garments and whilst a Level 2 protector will absorb and distribute more impact energy than a Level 1, it won’t affect the overall garment. Remember, CE testing covers the full garment including the materials and construction; impact protection is just one aspect.

HOW DO I CHECK IF A GARMENT IS CE CERTIFIED?

Every CE certified garment/protector will always have markings or labels indicating which class of protection it provides and the standard against which it was tested. This will be accompanied with a booklet explaining which Class it has been certified in. Manufacturers should also display a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) of the product on their website stating the Class/rating of each garment.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO A RIDER?

The safest riding gear is the gear that fits best, allowing you to control the bike in your riding environment. Dririder has always used quality materials and processes in our garments, however, taking the extra step and working towards full range certification will give you peace of mind that you’re paying for protection, not coverage.

YOU CAN’T RUSH QUALITY

With no CE testing facilities in Australia, Dririder garments are sent to Europe for testing. This process can take upwards of 6 months to complete due to different European laws around motorcycle apparel and demand from other brands.

Even without certification, Dririder stands by the quality of our materials, processes and manufacturers. That being said, Dririder is committed to certifying all our products to a minimum Class A. Throughout this catalogue, you’ll see one of the below icons indicating where a product is at in the certification process, be it 50%, 75% or 90%. It may not have the CE logo on it yet, but you can rest assured when it is certified, it’ll be the same product we’ve been selling all along, just with a new tag.

Soft CE Level 2 protective armour that changes at a molecular level during an impact to harden and protect riders. Used by pro MX athletes in helmets, armour is available for shoulder, elbow/knee and back. Soon to be the standard in most Dririder jackets and pants.

Waterproof and breathable liners which are highly resistant to rain and wind while maintaining breathability. Each brand of fabric has multiple layers with tiny pores that prevents water from passing through but allows heat to escape to reduce sweating. Dri-Tex is Dririder’s very own breathable waterproof fabric.

A world leader in protection, D3O materials are flexible until an impact, where the molecules harden to absorb and disperse energy. Used in premium Dririder jackets.

Coolmax Fibre® is a hydrophobic polyester, designed to transport moisture through the fabric and help it spread quickly, keeping you feeling cool and dry. Dririder has combined Coolmax with singlelayer Dyneema for comfort and abrasion resistance in Velocity jeans.

Thermoplastic reinforcements for toes, heels and ankles used in most Dririder boots and sneakers. It reduces the effects of crushing injuries and direct impacts on these key areas of the foot.

Highly technical, durable and abrasion resistant fabric used in high impact areas in place of leather. It’s pattern allows flexibility, protects the underlying material and has excellent breathability properties, all while offering a unique style compared to other protective fabrics.

Kevlar® fibre-based fabrics provide lightweight strength and protection. Five times stronger than steel – on an equal weight basis – and able to withstand fire and heat, it provides lightweight strength without sacrificing looks, performance or protection.
