Manitou’s MD, Mark Ormond, takes a seat on the CEA’s Management Council
Following the CEA’s (Construction Equipment Association) AGM at Plantworx Construction Exhibition, Chief Executive, Rob Oliver, announced a new member of the Management Council - Mark Ormond, Manitou UK’s Managing Director. Commenting on the announcement Rob said, “I’m really pleased to welcome Mark to the Management Council team. public. Manitou reported record sales in the region in 2018 with significant further growth during the first half of 2019. Prior to joining Manitou, Mark’s career was primarily in the Agricultural sector having been the MD at three leading equipment manufacturers over a 15-year period, Grimme, Lemken and SAME DetzFahr respectively. As Rob Oliver suggested in his comment, Mark is an active member of the Agricultural Engineers Association, has been a Board Member of it since 2013 and its President from 2017 to 2018. AFI retains ICS ServiceMark Accreditation
AFI has retained its Institute of Customer Service (ICS) ServiceMark accreditation for a further three years, following customer satisfaction feedback, a rigorous audit and an assessment of employee engagement against their Customer Service Strategy.
In 2016 AFI group of companies, one of the UK's leading powered access specialists, became the only powered access company to hold the coveted Institute of Customer Service ServiceMark accreditation. This has now been retained for three more years. ServiceMark is a national standard recognising an organisation's achievement in customer service, and its commitment to upholding those standards. ServiceMark is awarded based on customer satisfaction feedback and an assessment of employee engagement with an organisation's customer service strategy. It helps organisations understand how effective their customer service strategy is, and identifies areas for improvement. ServiceMark enables organisations to benchmark themselves against best practice, gain a better insight into their customers’ needs and develop strategies to meet them. Carlo Vinci, AFI Customer Service
6 //
Director, said: “We're extremely pleased with this result, it reflects AFI’s dedication to providing the best possible customer service to our customers. The ServiceMark accreditation demonstrates how good our customer service really is, and how we can find ways of developing further. It is a continuous process, so we are constantly striving towards taking our customer service to the next level. We will continue to put our customers at the heart of everything we do.” The ServiceMark accreditation is based on results taken from an extensive customer survey, an assessment of employee engagement with the customer service and after a thorough onsite assessment of processes affecting customer experience and satisfaction levels. In the report the Institute’s ServiceMark Assessor said: “The customers truly are at the heart of everything the company

does and the commitment to the customer – both internal and external – is communicated through a simple company ethos, or as it has also been referred to, the AFI Way, which is Friendly, Helpful and Professional. These words seem to have become a part of everyday language and I have heard them spoken unprompted in a number of interviews. This vision is underpinned by core business values: Teamwork, HSEQ, Customer Service and Profitability. It is further supported by their Customer Charter, which has been seen at every location I visited and referred to by many of those I spoke with. Senior managers are seen to champion customer service, both internal and external. This was clear in my meetings with some of the leadership team members but most importantly confirmed through interviews with more junior staff members. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind as to where great customer experience sits on the list of priorities – Customer 1st.“

GAP’s supply contribution awarded by major customer
GAP Hire Solutions has won the Best Contribution by Supply Chain Award from Welsh Water, one of GAP’s major accounts, after being nominated by the company itself for its collaborative work with their Capital Delivery Alliance. Within the capital investment programme framework, GAP is Welsh Water’s primary plant and welfare supplier, proactively offering innovative products to improve the safety and environmental performance of the Alliance’s construction sites. This falls in line with the rental company’s Green Action Plan initiative, within which GAP works with both its suppliers and customers to develop and introduce greener products to reduce their respective carbon footprints. There are numerous environmentally friendly and safety conscious products offered by GAP including solar powered street lighting which produces zero emissions and requires no cabling or complex control system, making it ideal for public spaces. GAP has also invested in Eco Welfare Units of various sizes, recently becoming the first hire company to invest in the Ecosmart ZERO Welfare Cabin from
8 //
AJC EasyCabin. Another recent investment sees GAP prioritising safety with the purchase of Wacker Neuson’s Dual View Dumper, which reduces the risks associated with reduced vision and reversing while operating plant machinery. As with all its customers, GAP has adopted a partnership approach while working with the Capital Delivery Alliance site teams to ensure that it meets the company’s requirements and deadlines. On top of this, innovation is continuously driven by GAP offering free trials or free training on certain products. GAP has offered free trials on battery powered hand-held tools which Welsh Water has benefitted from. These tools eliminate the need for cables or exhaust emissions, both contributing to a safer working environment, especially in confined spaces. During an urgent project, undertaken by a company within the Alliance, GAP provided Welsh Water with a much-needed gantry and supporting safety equipment. Due to the extremely sensitive location of the project being in the Restaurant Quarter of Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay, and very close to the
w w w. i n s i d e c o n s t r u c t i o n . c o . u k
Welsh National Assembly building, disruption had to be kept to a minimum. GAP provided its customers with a quick solution which was developed, with equipment sourced and supplied at very short notice, by the company’s Lifting depot in Cardiff. GAP played a pivotal role in the successful outcome of this project by being able to quickly react to the Alliance’s exacting requirements. On receiving the award, Major Account Manager at GAP, Anthony Thacker, commented: “We are honoured to have been nominated for this award by the Alliance and to win it is fantastic. It is wonderful to have our hard work, customer service and reliability recognised in such a way by our customers.” GAP is instrumental in supporting the Alliance’s vision as a key supply chain partner. Being present on many Alliance sites and proactively investing in new state of the art plant and welfare equipment to ensure that Welsh Water receives the most modern equipment, which also improves environmental and safety performance, is what led GAP to taking home the Best Contribution by Supply Chain Award.

HS2 reaches 9,000 jobs HS2 Ltd has confirmed that work on Britain’s new high speed railway is supporting 9,000 jobs around the country. The news comes as work on the route from London to Birmingham continues to gather pace, with activity on over 250 work sites. Over 2,000 firms across the UK now have contracts with HS2, 70% of them SMEs and 98% of them British. At peak construction, over 30,000 people will be needed to design and build the railway. Since Royal Assent in 2017, there have been 324 apprenticeships within HS2 Ltd and the supply chain. Activity across the first phase of the route is part of HS2’s enabling works. These are designed to prepare the way for viaducts, embankments, stations and ultimately the railway line itself. Works include land clearance, demolitions, tree planting, archaeology, utility diversions, and environmental mitigations, and much of this is centred around HS2’s new station sites in Birmingham, Old Oak Common and Euston. Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, said: Delivering HS2 is a manifesto commitment. Today’s announcement shows HS2 is happening and is yet another example of how this government is making sure Britain works for everyone, delivering jobs and growth across the country.
and intra-urban commuter services on existing lines – and connections needed to not only drive productivity growth but to deliver regeneration across the Midlands, North of England and beyond. Mark Thurston, Chief Executive of HS2 Ltd, said: HS2 is more than a railway, it’s also an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy for the country. The jobs and skills that we will create in every corner of the country will give us an industry to be proud of, and one that we can export to other countries. As work gathers pace on the project, the jobs and opportunities for British businesses to get involved mean the benefits are here and now. Britain once led the world in railway engineering, and it can
And this is just the beginning. At its peak HS2 will directly provide 30,000 jobs not only on the route but across the UK and when ready will deliver the vital extra capacity – both new intercity capacity and in the space it releases for freight

once again be at its forefront through HS2. Matthew Fell, Chief UK Policy Director at CBI, said: HS2 is a critical piece of national infrastructure, central to the country’s future prosperity. It offers a golden opportunity to boost economies across the North and Midlands, creating thousands of new jobs - both during construction and for years to come - by attracting investment from home and abroad. The Curzon Street site in Birmingham This site, which will be the home of the city’s new landmark station, is spearheading multi-million pound investment and regeneration proposals as a result of HS2’s arrival. The station site, and surrounding

Eastside district, which offers the first glimpse of the city for millions of passengers arriving by train, is filled with cranes and plant operatives preparing the way for its new lease of life. • Work at the Curzon Street site carried out by LM (Laing O’Rourke and J Murphy & Sons Ltd) has transformed the area in preparation for Birmingham’s brand new HS2 station. • The site spans 25,000 square metres, and 20,000 tonnes of concrete have been broken up, crushed and ready to be re-used on site. • The crushed concrete has been levelled to provide a working platform for archaeological investigations and remediation. It will be left as such until the site is developed at a later date. • Two buildings are being demolished at the site of the former Unite student accommodation which covers an area of 3,000 square metres. This will yield around 30,000 tonnes of material, with works being undertaken by the Birmingham-based demolitions firm, DSM. Washwood Heath in Birmingham Signs that Birmingham is getting HS2-ready continue 2.5 miles away in Washwood Heath, as another Midlands firm Total Reclaims Demolition makes way for HS2’s new train maintenance depot. • The immense old site of the Alstom Rail Depot is 110,282 square metres – the size of 15 football pitches - and will yield 412,000 tonnes of material that will be re-
cycled. • With 50,000 hours of labour required to clear the site, the team is now 75% of the way through the work programme. • Situated in the heart of one of Birmingham’s most deprived wards and constituencies, the site has been neglected for almost 15 years. • The new depot will play a pivotal role in regenerating the area, and once complete over 500 jobs will provide opportunities for local people. • Through HS2 Ltd’s supply chain, 12 local residents have already been supported into jobs through early works contractor LM-JV and security firm Servest. Euston station Across the capital, more than two thirds of demolitions have now been completed, with more than 1,000 people at work on the project. • In Euston, the area surrounding the existing station is transforming at a pace, with 2 high rise towers which dominated the area in front of the station currently being demolished, ready for the extensive remodelling of the station. • The 6 month demolition of the former Ibis hotel on Cardington Street has been completed, removing almost 9,000 tonnes of material with 95% set to be recycled or reused on site. • The clearance of the nearby disused National Temperance Hospital buildings was delivered in 2 stages, with the second half, the Insull wing, now also complete. issue 04
Old Oak Common Demolition of the former railway sheds at Old Oak Common is now well underway, alongside earth remediation and general clearance of the 1 kilometre long site, ready for the construction of HS2’s West London super-hub. • The site of our future London Rail Logistics Hub at Willesden, West London, has now been completely cleared. • The vast 150,000 metre squared rail hub is expected to process more than 6 million tonnes of excavated material from the London tunnels – taking the equivalent of 300,000 HGVs off the roads. • At nearby Victoria Road, a 42,000 square metre site has been cleared, a space equivalent to the size of 6 football pitches, in order to begin the build of the Victoria Road Crossover Box, a huge underground structure designed to allow trains passing through the London tunnels to switch tracks. • The government has already awarded £250 million to kick start further development of the area. The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation is driving a regeneration programme on the back of the HS2 and Elizabeth line hub that will see 65,000 jobs and 25,000 homes on the 650ha development site.

Ardent places biggest ever UK Loadall order with JCB JCB has secured the biggest single order for Loadall telescopic handlers ever placed by a UK customer as part of a two-year deal worth more than £75 million.
Ardent Hire Solutions, one of the country’s leading plant hire companies, and the UK’s largest telehandler hirer, has invested in a fleet of 1,100 Loadalls ranging from the compact 525-60 through to the 550-80. The company is also investing in a fleet of 3CX backhoe loaders, rough terrain fork lifts and the flagship 7T Hi-Viz site dumpers that address key safety concerns experienced on construction sites today. By using a low-slung chassis design and revised skip, the 7T Hi-Viz operator benefits from huge improvements in front visibility with an improvement of 77% compared to conventional six-tonne dumpers when laden. The machines are built at JCB’s Staffordshire factories, powered by JCB engines from JCB Power Systems factory in Derbyshire and with transmissions and axles from JCB Transmissions in Wrexham. They are also fitted with the latest
16 //
JCB LiveLink telematics fleet management system giving real-time information on the machines’ operation and safe usage. Group Managing Director Global Major Accounts, Yvette HenshallBell, said: “We are delighted to secure this major order from one of the UK’s leading plant hire companies. It shows great confidence in JCB machinery and also in the wider construction sector which Ardent’s plant hire business supports. “JCB has worked closely with Ardent for a number of years and it’s testament to the quality of our range of Loadalls and safety credentials of our site dumpers, as well as the world-class service back-up, that we’ve secured this valuable business.” Ardent Hire Solutions Head of Marketing, Anuj Patel, said: “This latest acquisition further strengthens Ardent’s telehandler fleet which is the

largest available in the UK today. The availability of advanced technology and telematics on the entire fleet was critical for us when specifying JCB machines. “For Ardent clients, the knowledge that we are working closely with our supply chain to provide solutions that increase productivity, reduce their costs and, most importantly, reduce their on-site risk gives great reassurance. We are stepping away from the plant hire norm and offering a service that sparks real change in the market.” Trading from 11 depots nationwide and specialising in providing plant hire to major housing, civil and construction clients, Ardent is constantly investing in the most technologically advanced machines and innovations on the market. It has a range of over 5,000 units for rent with an average age of less than two years.

Manitou at Plantworx 2019
Manitou Group, an active member and supporter of the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), exhibited at Plantworx for the fourth time this year. Manitou exhibited on a large plot adjacent to the East of England Arena building, a good decision in the light of the wind and rain which the visitors and exhibitors suffered throughout the 3 day show. Following on from the giant Bauma exhibition in April Manitou Group had the opportunity to exhibit both new and improved models from its wide product range and to demonstrate the many advantages of its ‘connected machine’ strategy. Manitou Group includes products designed and manufactured by Gehl and they too were present at the exhibition. The machine display included two new Manitou models, a new compact telescopic buggy the MT 420 H comfort, and a new articulated

loader the MLA-6 65H-Z. Manitou also took the opportunity to preview a Stage 5 engined MT 1840 easy which will enter production in the second half of the year. All Manitou and Gehl machines are fitted with the CEA’s official security marking scheme, CESAR, which acts as both a deterrent against theft and an invaluable aid in recovery. The Gehl product on show was the popular R165 skid-steer loader, a 51kW machine with an operating capacity of 748kg, which like all Gehl products offers excellent ergonomics, versatility and productivity. Showing the breadth of Manitou’s product range, the company also exhibited an MRT 3050 large rotary telehandler, a 1350R skid-steer loader, an MC 30 rough terrain forklift and a 200 ATJ aerial work platform. The Manitou stand was busy

throughout the 3-day show with visitors showing interest in the machines on display and in the ‘connected machine’ strategy and the Easy manager App. Since January 2019 all new compatible machines built by Manitou have the capability to be a ‘connected machine’. This opens-up endless possibilities to improve performance, safety and security, and reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) for customers. “Connected machines are an essential source of data for our goal of reducing TCO for users” comments Olivier le Pesquer, head of TCO for Manitou Group. Based on data from early connected machines we’ve noted significantly lower fuel consumption across all four applications of a telehandler, namely loading, handling, road travel, and operating at idle speed. Connected Machines offer a range of other benefits to users. Firstly, connected machines include a

tracker which can communicate the machine’s location at any time and it’s also possible to GeoFence the machine for increased safety and security. Secondly, the dealer or fleet manager will be able to track the machines and identify their service needs remotely. Preventive maintenance will be made much easier, and the dealer will be able to connect to the machine in advance of a service visit, to ensure that any
faults can be rectified during the first visit. As an added benefit owners of connected machines will have a 2 year or 2,000 hours, whichever occurs first, factory warranty. Customers will be able to extend their warranty by 1 to 4 years offering peace of mind for up to 6 years, or 6,000 hours whichever occurs first. Manitou now offer two levels of ex-

tended warranty cover. The first, “ESSENTIAL COVERAGE”, relates to the engine and transmission and the second, “TOTAL COVERAGE”, concerns all the components, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, and the hydraulic components. Plantworx Debuts For Bobcat E10e and R-Series Excavators
Plantworx 2019 sees the first appearance in the UK of the new E10e Electric Mini-Excavator from Bobcat, the industry's first commercially available battery-powered, zero tail swing mini-excavator in the one tonne class. Alongside the E10e, the E26, E27z and E27 R-Series mini-excavators which made their Plantworx debuts at this year’s show.
Game Changer for Indoor Work
The new E10e mini-excavator answers a customer need for a zero emission and low noise tool for indoor work together with work outdoors in gardens and other confined spaces. Combining this with a width of just 71 cm, Bobcat’s new E10e battery-powered, zero tail swing (ZTS) mini-excavator can easily pass through standard doors and in and out of lifts. Explaining why Bobcat has concentrated on this area of the electric excavator market, Jarry Fiser, MiniExcavator Product Line Director, Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said: “Based on market research and customer interest, we concluded that the 1 tonne electric mini-excavator sector is currently the most useful type
20 //
and size - it is ideal for indoor demolition and basement digging as well as sensitive areas such as enclosed gardens and landscaping. The E10e can operate for a full working day using an optional external Bobcat super-charger to recharge the machine during normal work breaks.” When doing indoor and outdoor work of this nature, there are very specific requirements. Until now, there has been no standard OEM solution for such work – many jobs had to be worked on manually with less effective tools or with aftermarket conversions providing third party machine adjustments (that often did not meet desired standards). The new E10e is a unique proposition in this area.
w w w. i n s i d e c o n s t r u c t i o n . c o . u k
Developed at the Bobcat EMEA Innovation Center, in conjunction with electric vehicle suppliers, the E10e is based on the design of the very successful diesel powered E10 1 tonne mini-excavator, which has achieved sales of over 10,000 units in just 10 years (also on the stand at Plantworx, the E10 is now called the E10z to reflect that it is a ZTS mini-excavator). The new E10e has the same ZTS profile and identical external dimensions as the standard E10z machine and offers equal or better performance. Conversely, the E10e offers very low noise levels on site with an LpA of only 71 dBA vs 80 dBA for the standard E10z, equivalent to roughly half of the noise generated by the diesel machine!
PLANT & EQUIPMENT
As well as indoor demolition and basement projects, there are many other sites where zero emission, low noise machines are required such as urban/city centre developments, night-time work and contracts in quiet zones such as hospitals, cemeteries, schools, universities and other applications. Full Working Day on the Job The E10e has a state-of-the-art lithium-ion, maintenance-free battery pack with an advanced management system, designed to fit within the standard machine envelope to maintain the machine’s ZTS profile. Based on customer studies, Bobcat has optimized the battery pack to provide capacity to match typical work patterns. The E10e can continuously work for four hours on a single charge in standard working conditions, but by coupling the machine to an optional external Bobcat supercharger, it can be recharged to 80% of the capacity in less than 2 hours. The battery can also be recharged overnight by using the on-board charger from a standard 230 V grid. The new E10e is easy to maintain and safe to operate – due to the use of low voltages, there is no need for operators to have special authorisation to work with the E10e. R-Series with the Innovative E26 Cylinder-Inside-Boom Excavator Comprising five models (E26, E27z,
E27, E34 and E35z) from 2-4 tonne, the new R-Series mini-excavators offer the best combination of high digging forces, outstanding stability and precise controllability in this category. In addition, the lower weight of the machines makes transportation easier. The new generation of the popular E26 is an easy-to-use, robust machine optimized for specific rental industry needs while introducing the next level of operator comfort and features required by demanding owner-operators. The new E26 has a transport weight reduced by 100 kg but offers increased overthe-side lifting capacity. The new R-Series E26 is equipped with extra innovative features aimed at the rental market and to protect uptime, namely the unique and patented Cylinder-InsideBoom (CIB) feature specifically engineered as a solution for a common problem in the rental industry, by providing strong, innovative protection for the boom cylinder. This is combined with the novel geometry of the workgroup, increasing protection against bucket collision with the cab. The E27z model further enhances
issue 04
the excellent performance characteristics of Bobcat’s current E26 machine, with the largest cab for this size of machine on the market. As a true Zero House Swing (ZHS) machine (even with the optional heavy counterweight), the E27z offers the highest flexibility of movements when working close to walls, coupled with best-in-class 360-degree stability and a low weight for easy transportation. With the optional long arm and a premium cab, the E27z offers the digging output and operator comfort of much larger excavators, making it a machine of choice for urban operating construction companies. The conventional swing E27 model introduces an in-class unique combination of superior stability, class leading digging performance and breakout forces, together with a transport weight that is still below the weight limits for appropriate trailers. Even with the optional heavy counterweight, the E27 offers just 280 mm of tail overhang which allows the machine to be operated in confined spaces. This makes the machine an ideal tool for highly demanding applications where performance together with transportability have a priority over compactness.

Finning gives a second life to Enovert’s CAT® D6T
Leading UK waste management company, Enovert has worked with Caterpillar dealer Finning UK & Ireland to fully rebuild its Cat D6T, providing the business with a comprehensive second life for one of its key pieces of equipment.
The main driver for Enovert’s decision to opt for a rebuilt machine over a new piece of equipment was the massive cost savings. The D6T in question had only recently been fitted with a new set of tracks and this, along with the additional costs of fitting a waste package to a new machine, made a rebuild the most cost-efficient option for the business. In order to define the scope of the rebuild, engineers at Finning’s Glasgow workshop performed a full inspection whilst the machine was with them for an undercarriage replacement. The engineers found that the machine was showing the effects of working hard in a landfill operation, and required a full powertrain overhaul, alongside operator comfort improvements including a new seat, replacements for the window glass and the door seals. In addition, the dozer’s blade was suffering from wear, which led to the recommendation to include replacements to the pins, bushings and cutting edge in the rebuild package.
Glasgow workshop facilitated the machine’s delivery to site in February, along with an engineer who watched the dozer’s first shift back at work to ensure that everything was working correctly. Finning’s engineers worked closely with the Enovert team, using the FinCam system to provide regular updates on the rebuild process, and corresponding often via email to keep the team apprised of any developments. Mark Harling, SouthEast Area Manager for Enovert South Ltd, commented: “The rebuild project was a huge success, and the team at Finning kept us involved every inch of way on this project and ensured that every eventuality had been considered. “We were also really pleased that Finning sent an engineer to site during the delivery of the machine. The accompanying engineer gave us real value in sorting out the minor teething issues that are to be expected when you introduce a new machine to site, helping us to rectify any small problems on the spot.”
Following the rebuild, Finning’s

Mark continues: “A huge amount of credit must be given to Finning for the way they have handled the rebuild. All of the team on the shop floor, the technicians and engineers with spanners, spray guns and multi-meters have worked really hard to help complete this project, and should rightly take pride in what is a fantastic job. We’re extremely pleased with the results, and we’re confident that our rebuilt D6T will be a strong and valuable investment in the coming years.” Speaking about the success of the project, Alan Shea, Product Support Sales Manager for Finning, commented: “We were delighted to receive such positive feedback from Enovert about the rebuild of their D6T. Everyone involved in the project has worked incredibly hard, and we’re pleased to have built on our already strong relationship with Enovert with another successful project. All of the team in the workshop were committed to involving the customer at every stage, helping them to feel secure in the knowledge that they had made the right choice by working with us to give their machine a second life.”

Plantworx 2019 closes its doors on what was deemed a triumphant show
The 4th biennial Plantworx Construction Machinery Show, incorporating Railworx, (11 – 13 June), hosted by the CEA (Construction Equipment Association), fell victim once again to monsoon weather conditions. The show was blessed with a brief respite on the middle day of the event (Wednesday 12th June) – but the torrential rain returned during the afternoon and continued until close of play on the last day of the show.
However, the rain did not ‘stop play, and hardy visitors braved the elements and flocked through the gates to see the plethora of brandnew equipment and products on display, at the show’s new home at the East of England Arena, Peterborough. One visitor via twitter said, “We are not made of paper in our industry - a bit of rain won’t put me off.” – and this proved to be true. The Plantworx team revealed that
28 //
footfall reached in excess of 13,700 over the three-days of the event, despite the biblical conditions (final numbers to be verified). The show was 20% larger than the 2017 event and was home to more than 450 exhibitors, including Railworx exhibitors, and was the biggest Plantworx to date! The new ‘all weather’ venue was a big hit with both visitors and exhibitors

New initiatives at the show… This year’s event was packed with new initiatives and innovations which represented the current demands in the ever-evolving construction sector. The show saw major launches including the new CEA and HMG commissioned Sector Report. The CEA and Datatag also launched the latest incarnation of the CESAR Scheme – the innovative Emissions Compliance Verification (ECV) functionality. The CESAR ECV is an invaluable ‘bolt-on’ product which compliments the existing CESAR Security System and additionally allows quick and easy verification of a machines emissions category.
ing Design, Rowe Hankins, Marshalls CPM, Hilti, Fenix Signalling, Bolle Safety and RSS Infrastructure. Network Rail - including its Signalling Innovation Group and Group Digital Railway - and the Railway Industry Association (RIA) also supported the show. New zones included the Classic Plant Arena where the show celebrated the construction industry’s heritage. More than 20 items of classic machinery were on display which included vintage JCB and Caterpillar machines in addition to classic Perkins Engines.
Railworx, which was co-located with Plantworx, was a welcome addition to the event. It was the first time that rail has had such a significant presence at the show, and with CP6 and major projects such as HS2 - it reflected the growing importance of rail infrastructure to the UK construction industry.
Also new was the Get SET (Skills, Employment, Education and Training) Zone, which proved a popular destination for visitors who were looking to explore job openings, training courses, apprenticeships, get support and advice about skills education, employment and training opportunities across the rail and construction sectors. MIND also addressed mental health issues in the workplace.

where guests were able to operate the simulator machines in a ‘multimachine environment’, bringing in several machines including an articulated dump truck, dozer and excavator, on one ‘virtual’ job site – this is what Tenstar Simulation, providers of the simulators, describe as ‘co-operative learning’. This latest evolution of simulator training has the ability to evaluate each operator’s individual capabilities – identifying his/her strengths and weaknesses. It can also monitor operator fatigue and other factors such as efficiency and safety – providing trainers, operators and employers with a detailed profiling report – a huge step up from the basic CPCS card. The zone was the brainchild of Plantforce Rental’s Dale Hawkins he reported, “We (Plantforce Rentals) wanted to showcase the ability of construction simulator training to a large audience and Plantworx provided the perfect platform. We were able to demonstrate how simulation instruction is the way forward for novice operator training and upskilling existing staff.”

was in full operation! Andrea Ayre, International Business Enterprise & Community Co-ordinator, Careers Lead, Ken Stimpson Community School, brought along 30 of her year 8 students who have construction as a chosen GCSE/BTEC option. Andrea said, “We had a great time thank you – no one moaned about the weather, the freebies more than made up for that. They all managed a go on the Diggerland diggers as well, and the simulator machines were a huge success. I now have three young ladies who can't wait to be crane drivers. Once again from all at Ken Stimpson thank you very much for the invitation.” In conclusion, Plantworx and the new Railworx addition to the show, were a great success – despite every attempt by the weather to dampen people’s spirits. The new ‘all weather’ showground, at the East of England Arena, Peterborough, proved to be suitably resilient to the harsh conditions. The Wifi signal and mobile telephone signals were efficient and both exhibitors and visitors reported that the show was a triumph!

UK Construction Sector Report launched at Plantworx
At Plantworx 2019, (East of England Arena & Events Centre, Peterborough), the CEA (Construction Equipment Association), launched the new CEA and HMG commissioned Sector Report.
The launch was attended by Government officials, including Louise Scott, a representative from the Automotive Unit at BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy), who also worked on the project, CECE (Committee for European Construction Equipment) delegates, including the Secretary General at CECE, Riccardo Viaggi, and a host of guests and media representatives from the construction equipment sector. Hosted by CEA’s chief executive Rob Oliver and introduced by the reports co-author KGP’s Alex Woodrow – the study revealed that that the UK Construction Sector
34 //
ranked number one in Europe with a 24% market share. The Sector Report was researched by consultants, Knibb Gormezano & Partners (KGP), and co-sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. The report also underlined that the current Brexit debacle had not had a direct impact on sales of construction machinery in the UK and showed record revenue for the construction equipment industry in 2018, with sales of £13bn, up by 18% on the benchmark set for 2013.
w w w. i n s i d e c o n s t r u c t i o n . c o . u k
The UK was the largest producer of construction equipment in Europe in 2018, and the 5th largest in the world – producing in excess of 60,000 units – earning manufacturers around £13bn in revenue. Around 60% of UK machine exports are outside the EU, but component suppliers are more reliant on the EU. Value is skewed towards niche products with ADT’s, crushers and screens a major UK Export. Since 2016 the National Infrastructure delivery plan 2016-2021 has set out investment plans for government spending on transport, energy and other infrastructure.
FEATURE
Rob Oliver highlighted that the confidence in the sector is due in part to massive infrastructure projects like High Speed 2 (HS2), Hinkley Point C and Highways England’s current £15bn five-year roads programme (RP1). The Government has committed to further significant infrastructure investment and aims to expand the current housebuilding programme by another 30 per cent to 300,000 new homes a year. 2017 was a record year for new infrastructure and housing projects, with a value of around £106.5 billion. The industry has continued to innovate, invest and develop new products and services to meet customer demand since 2014, despite investment in the Stage V products. Investment in R&D increased a further 10% in 2018 to £220m and there has been a significant rise in manufacturers’ use of digitalisation and automation which is set to continue.
Sustainability also features in the report – equipment must be considered as part of a productive, sustainable system. Near zero and zero tailpipe emissions, equipment and alternative fuels will broaden product ranges further. De-carbonisation will be a driver in some segments, to meet CSR and LEZ requirements. There are 1,500 companies in the construction equipment supply chain, with a total direct workforce of 42,000. The report also uncovered that one of the biggest challenges facing the industry remains that of skills. The skills gap for UK construction equipment operators and manufacturers is widening. The technological advancements expected in the CE sector in the next 10 – 15 years are going to broaden this gap even further – particularly with emerging technologies. Automation and autonomy can fill that gap, but it is still a big challenge for the industry.

First UK Demo of Bobcat Remote Control at Plantworx
At Plantworx 2019, Bobcat presented the company’s new Remote Control System for Bobcat compact loaders for the first time in the UK. Part of the widest range of machine-attachment solutions on the market, the Remote Control System was demonstrated on a T450 compact track loader. This was the main attraction in the demo area, alongside a Bobcat S450 skid-steer loader and E27 and E45 mini-excavators.
Like all Bobcat compact loaders, the T450 is equipped with the quickchange Bob-Tach attachment mounting system, facilitating the quick and safe interchange of over 100 different types of Bobcat attachment, delivering versatility and time-saving efficiency across a huge range of different applications. The remotely controlled T450 in the Plantworx demo area will be working with the Vibratory Roller, Soil Conditioner, Auger, LT213 Trencher, Combination Bucket, Landplane, 2D Laser Grader, Dozer Blade and Pallet Fork attachments from Bobcat. As a market leader worldwide in attachments, Bobcat offers customers so many advantages in this market. They include the company‘s One-Stop-Shop approach –

productivity. This results in lower operating and maintenance costs. In addition, products are manufactured to the highest standards, guaranteeing the best quality and meeting, or exceeding, local requirements all around the world. New Remote Control System In a similar fashion, Bobcat is the first manufacturer to introduce a Remote Control System as original ‘Plug&Play’ equipment, rather than offering it as an add-on development from a third party. The Remote Control System allows operators to leave their seat in the cab and control their Bobcat loader remotely. It is compatible with Bobcat skid-steer, compact track and all wheel steer loader models equipped with the company’s Se-

lectable Joystick Controls. The new system is now commercially available to order. “After comprehensive testing and licensing of the new Remote Control System, we have introduced it as an easy ‘Plug&Play’ solution for existing machines for commercial launch,” said Alastair Jones, Bobcat Attachments District Manager (UK, Ireland and Nordics & Baltics). “The Remote Control System can be used in many applications with the focus on limitless visibility, the ability to communicate with the surroundings without the need to be present in the cab, comfort enhancement for applications with noise, vibration and harshness or even in dangerous areas. This was the voice of our customers and the issues we observed on most jobsites,” Alastair Jones explained. The new plug and play system com-
prises an easily portable and industrial radio remote control solution that can be mounted and dismounted on machines in a matter of minutes, leaving behind the standard machine in its original form. Being able to control the loader from outside the cab offers the operator a completely new and alternative opportunity in terms of visibility and communication. Not only does it provide direct sight of the progress of work with a range of attachments, further increasing the versatility of the loader and a comprehensive range of attachments including angle brooms, augers, breakers, buckets, snow blowers or trenchers and wheelsaws, where the operator specifically needs to drive backwards with the loader and this solution offers perfect visibility of the project. It also allows operators to talk face-to-face with project partners and manage the surroundings

(verbally or non-verbally) at the same time. Increased Comfort and Productivity Remote control aims to increase comfort and productivity by distancing the operator from dust, noise, vibrations and so on encountered at the workface or on job sites that require special precautions. Work can be done faster with higher precision and, in some applications, with fewer personnel on the job site. For increased protection, the system also features an emergency stop button and drop and tilt detection. Every remote-control kit is protected by a dedicated password, with two-way communication providing all the important information about the loader (such as fuel and oil status, warnings, etc.) on a 3.5inch transflective colour backlit LCD

display. The system provides most of the functions that can be performed via direct loader operation, including throttle, light, creep and oat controls. There is also speed management control to ensure easier operation in certain applications (such as trenching, tilling, scarifying and so on). The system in very intuitive to use and the training for end users will be provided by Bobcat dealers. The Remote Control System is supplied with two exchangeable batteries oering a long 20-hour battery life. The protective case ensures it is easier to transport from one job site to another. This forms part of an updated state-of-theart ergonomic design with the system housed in a rugged and weatherproof enclosure. As mentioned above, applications include demolition environments with poor air quality and distracting noise, where the Remote Control System gives the operator the ability to do work from a distance, free
38 //
from dirt, dust and noise. For construction work that normally requires two people, this solution can cut labour numbers and costs, as only one operator is needed to complete the job themselves by carrying out work with attachments from outside the cab.
In the waste and recycling industries, the remote control solution allows operators to handle dangerous or toxic materials from a safe distance, minimizing the risk of exposure.
In shipyards with limited space, distancing the operator from the machine keeps them away from hazardous chemicals and other airborne pollutants. The job can be done more easily, with better visibility for managing tight spaces in
With the remote control solution, operators can work on hazardous applications (such as detecting and removing land mines) and also in areas where more visibility is needed to do the job properly (such as in some road applications).

Plantforce Rentals tackle safety issues head-on with new ‘highly spec’d’ Hyundai wheeled excavator
Plantforce Rentals is a leading construction equipment rental company headquartered in Somerset, with additional depots across the West Country and the Midlands. The company owns a fleet of 93 Hyundai machines ranging from 6 tonnes up to 52 tonnes, which include loading shovels, crawler, and wheeled excavators. Plantforce has recently added another Hyundai machine to its fleet – an HW160 wheeled excavator, which has been kitted out with the very latest in safety innovation technology.
Plantforce first had the idea for this new ‘super-safe’ machine following a recent conference, which was attended by representatives from Highways England and several of the suppliers to UK tier one contractors including, Hinkley Point C and the HS2 project.
One of the subjects discussed at the conference was what was currently available in the way of technological innovations and how they could be utilized to minimise the danger to highways operatives. Particularly when the operatives were working alone, and at night or

HEALTH & SAFETY
Plantforce Rentals Operations Director Sam Mercer said, “Plantforce have an excellent working relationship with many of the contractors who work in these types of environments. We are also at the forefront of technology and innovation when it comes to operated and self-drive plant hire. We felt that we were ideally placed to embark on the innovation project and start working towards a technology-driven future for both contractors, plant machinery and operators.” Following joint discussions with Plantforce Marketing Manager, Dale Hawkins, who also champions simulation training for the company, together they designed what they describe as a ‘lone man’ working solution for the industry. Dale said, “With safety and efficiency an important key factor on all major contracts around the UK, we have developed this Hyundai machine, with ‘lone man’ working in mind. It offers a solution for operatives working in the highways and civil sectors – chiefly the night workers.” Dale went on to explain, “Although this may look like a normal Hyundai
42 //
wheeled loader on the outside it’s packed with new technology with the aim of reducing the number of men from the ‘work zone’, this not only promotes safety but can reduce costings on a job site with fewer machines and speed up work times.” The Hyundai HW160W’s transformation began with the installation of an Encgon tiltrotator system fitted with grab and buckets, and a state-of-the-art twin axle tipping trailer. A top of the range Prolec height and slew restriction system was then installed, which also comes with an inbuilt combined weighing system, where a cut-out system is included to prevent the machine from toppling over if overloaded. The Prolec system will also restrict the machine from moving into live carriageways or overhead power lines. The Hyundai is also fitted with a GPS Trimble Earthworks system, which once the site has been scanned for buried utilities with a ground penetrating radar, the GPS in the machine will give the operator a full 3D map of the site. This system reduces the need for more personnel onsite – the system does

the job of a surveyor. A 7 light FHOSS Halo Exclusion is also fitted. Once the FHOSS Halo light is installed around the vehicle, focused beams of red light will identify an exclusion zone, making workers aware not to enter the danger zone. The Hyundai also benefits from a Site Zone proximity warning system, which alerts the operator if any personnel enters the working radius. These safety features are combined with high visibility Chapter 8 reflective chevrons and livery. Dale said, “The Hyundai machine is highly visible, so any approaching traffic, will clearly see the machine further reducing risk. It also eliminates service strikes and overloading the machine – but most importantly collision with other site personnel.” The wheeled excavator and trailer combination is a relatively new concept in the UK and is only usually provided as an owner-driver combination or a main contractor solution – the Plantforce solution is unique to the hire market and the company expects it to be a success.

Perkins new hybrid technologies make their UK debut at Plantworx 2019
Perkins showcased its hybrid-electric, mechanical and hydraulic power technologies alongside its new 0.5 to 18 litre EU Stage V engine range at Plantworx this year.
The UK’s largest live working construction event, the bi-annual show was the perfect opportunity for Perkins to present its new hybrid technologies and they value they add to the UK’s original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as they prepare to design the next generation of off-highway construction machines. “Construction is a critical market for us,” Jaz Gill, Perkins Vice President global sales, marketing, service and parts said. “Our customers appreciate and value the deep expertise we bring to their projects – thanks to our rich heritage over more than 85 years – on how to install and integrate our engines into their machines to maximise performance. “
to the individual application. Hybrids and electrification “Following a significant investment in hybrid engines and electrification research, we find ourselves in an excellent technology leadership position to help our valued OEMs develop the machines of tomorrow,” Jaz continued. With access to millions of hours of machine operating data, Perkins has identified that the operating cycles of real construction machines varies from one application to another, and as machine size increases. The duty cycles, operating conditions and packaging constraints for off-highway machines drive the need for specific configurations that are highly customised

vanced tool set, skilled team and excellent facilities OEMs will achieve these superior results quickly and at the lowest cost.” At Plantworx, Perkins highlighted three hybrid power solutions through three engines, all at 75 kW (100 hp). To demonstrate modularity and flexibility, all three hybrid solutions are based on the Perkins® Syncro 2.8 litre. The three technologies on show were: • Hybrid-electric: There are several ways to incorporate the electric motor or generator, with Perkins preferred arrangement delivering excellent fuel saving benefits while moderating the installation impact and minimising the cost impact on the machine. The flexibility of the system provides opportunities for further efficiency and functionality improvements in the whole machine through use of 48-volt electrics. • Hybrid-mechanical: This stores energy in a high-speed flywheel which can be delivered back to the machine. This is particularly useful in hybridising machines that run a cyclic operation and need very intense bursts of additional power. Apart from the very quick energy release, the advantage over hybrid electric is in installation size.
power density our Stage V engines are quick and simple for OEM’s engineering teams to install, saving time and money at every stage. At Stage V, uplift in power and torque performance across the 0.5 to 18 litre range has improved in three main ways. Power density – the amount of power you get from a particular package size, has increased by up to 28 percent. Torque meanwhile, has increased by up to 29 percent and significant fluid consumption – namely fuel and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) improvements, have also been made across the range. All of these mean that OEMs can downsize and reduce cost without compromising on performance. At Plantworx Perkins is showcasing a range of engines that meet the new Stage V emission standards. • The new Perkins® Syncro 3.6 litre offers torque and economic fuel consumption. Its compact design Perkins Hybrid Mechanical
enables OEMs to optimise machine layout, while operators will benefit from a quiet engine, after a reduction in noise of 3 decibels at full power. • The new 1204J-E44TA/TTA is a 4cylinder, 4.4-litre capable of multiple power ratings from 82–150 kW (110-201 hp) with peak torque reaching 825 Nm. The new engine offers significant machine productivity benefits with 15 percent increase in power, 10 percent more torque and 5-10 percent reduction in fuel consumption. • At the larger end of the Perkins range, the 1706J-E93TA is a 6cylinder, 9.3 litre engine providing 19 percent more power and improved torque up to 340 kW and 2088 Nm. With a fully configurable options list, a compact and lightweight aftertreatment and no exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) the 1706J offers high performance in a simple and flexible design.
• Hybrid-hydraulic: This stores energy in hydraulic accumulators. In some machines this can be the most practical and cost-effective hybrid solution as it easily integrates into existing machine hydraulic systems. Software and integration of machine systems are key to achieving great savings from this technology. Perkins is offering hybrid and electric technologies across its Stage V power range from 8.2 to 597 kW (11 to 800 hp). Proven performance Perkins Stage V engines have been designed with OEMs profitability in mind. Offering market-leading

Launch of New Hire Controller Trailblazer Apprenticeship Programme
The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has officially launched the new Hire Controller (Plant, Tools and Equipment) Trailblazer Apprenticeship to ensure effective rollout and delivery of the new apprenticeship programme.
Following approval of the new Hire Controller Trailblazer Apprenticeship by the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) in December 2018, the CPA hosted a focus implementation group launch in London in conjunction with CITB to outline the new standard, documentation and end-point assessment devised to support the new apprenticeship programme. This comes on the back of several years’ of hard work by an employer-led Trailblazer Working Group who determined that a Hire Controller Trailblazer Apprenticeship Programme was critical in order to attract new recruits to the construction plant industry, as well as upskilling existing staff into a new role. Hire Controllers co-ordinate the hire of plant, tools and equipment to customers and through a wide-ranging skills set, play a key role within plant hire companies nationwide. The Trailblazer Working Group was chaired by Kirsty Archbold-Laming, Director of Southern Hoists, and in-

dustry representatives from across the hire sector played a key role in creating the new apprenticeship programme and standards, with representation from companies such as A-Plant, AP Webb, Ainscough Cranes, Camfauds, Clee Hill Plant, GAP Group, Lavendon, MGF, Nationwide, Selwood and Speedy Services. The bid to develop this apprenticeship goes back several years with a number of hurdles overcome before approval was granted for delivery and rollout of the new apprenticeship programme.
The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has provided extensive managerial and administrative support throughout the process and both the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and Hire Association Europe (HAE) have also been involved in the development of the new Hire Controller Trailblazer Apprenticeship which is supported by CITB. This means that the new Hire Controller Trailblazer Apprenticeship is recognised and ac-

cepted by all primary trade bodies and industry federations in the hire sector and members of the CPA, IPAF and HAE will all be able to make use of the new pathway into the hire and powered access rental industry. The launch event was hosted by CPA Technical Development Manager Peter Brown and Neil Hartis MBE of the CITB and was attended by Kevin Minton, Chief Executive of the CPA, as well as representatives from CITB, IPAF, HAE, several members of the Trailblazer Working Group, employers and organisations who will be delivering the new apprenticeship scheme such as Askham Bryan College. The new apprenticeship programme also has support from several other training providers including Reaseheath College, West Nottinghamshire College and Stephenson College. The new apprenticeship has been set by the group at a level 2 and will take between 12-18 months to complete, with 20% of that time to be devoted to ‘off-the-job’ training.
The IfA has placed this Trailblazer in funding band 8 which equates to £5000 that can be spent or claimed by employers (subject to current funding rules) for apprenticeship levy and non-levy paying organisations, in line with typical training costs supplied by training providers. In developing the standard for this occupation, the Working Group defined the required duties of a Hire Controller for the training syllabus which included the provision of technical information to customers
in helping them select and use suitable equipment for the planned activities; ensuring the equipment being hired is compliant with Health and Safety requirements; completing contract documentation at both on-hire and off-hire stages; processing payments including calculating hire and rental charges, damage charges, fraud prevention measures and insurance payments; and handling customer technical enquiries and complaints.

The Future of the Construction Plant Sector is in Safe Hands - Leading Apprentices and Trainees Recognised at CPA Stars of the Future Event The UK’s most promising apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector have been recognised at the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards 2019.
Held in association with headline sponsor A-Plant, the CPA’s Stars of the Future awards scheme identifies some of the industry’s brightest up-and-coming talent and over 700 apprentices were eligible for entry, representing companies such as GAP, Go Plant, JCB Watling, Lifterz, Liebherr, MHM Plant, Marubeni Komatsu, Nixon Hire, Riwal and Vp plc, plus several independents. Now in its seventh year, this year’s awards presentation was hosted at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley near Coventry. 2019 was a landmark year as traditionally Stars of the Future has only rewarded plant mechanic apprentices but this year, two new national titles of CPA Plant Operator Star of the Future and CPA Lifting Technician Star of the Future

were also up for grabs in recognition of new trailblazer apprenticeships. For the first time, employers were also invited to make nominations, in addition to colleges delivering apprentice training. The awards are open to apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector across the UK. The CPA welcomed over 300 apprentices, family members, employers and colleges to the prestigious awards ceremony. As well as A-Plant, the event was supported by sponsors IPAF, Greenshields JCB, Snap-on Tools, Liebherr, ACOP Group and Stokey Plant Hire. Prior to the awards being given out by CPA Chief Executive Kevin Minton assisted by Rob Squires, CPA Training and Safety Manager, presentations were delivered by Patrick Flannery, MD of P

There were a total of 21 college awards for both NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 plant mechanic apprentices, as nominated by colleges nationwide delivering plant mechanic apprentice training. Apprentices were assessed throughout the academic year on their work in college and in their work environment. There were also three employer nominated awards for plant mechanic apprentices at NVQ Level 2 and 3 respectively, plus two national winners and the two new awards for plant operators and lifting technicians.
