Caterpillar and Rio Tinto to retrofit CAT® trucks for autonomous operation at Marandoo mine in Australia

Caterpillar and Rio Tinto have signed an agreement for retrofitting 19 Cat® 793F mining trucks for autonomous operation at the Marandoo iron ore mine in Western Australia. Caterpillar will also install Cat Command for hauling software for operation of the autonomous fleet. The result of the agreement will be the first fleet of Cat autonomous trucks deployed by Rio Tinto.

The first few trucks will be retrofitted in mid-2018, and the project will be completed by the end of 2019. Beyond installation and startup, both Caterpillar and the regional Cat dealer, WesTrac, will play ongoing roles in managing and supporting the autonomous haulage system. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Rio Tinto in installing their first

Cat autonomous haulage system,” said Jean Savage, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the Surface Mining & Technology Division. “Working with WesTrac, we look forward to helping Rio Tinto enhance operations with our proven mining technology.” Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said, “We are proud to have partnered with Caterpillar for 50 years and are excited about starting this new chapter in our automation story. This project with Caterpillar accelerates deployment of autonomous haulage via retrofit in our Pilbara operations and helps meet our objectives of making our operations safer and more productive.” The Cat autonomous trucks system draws capabilities from the full range of Cat MineStar™ System technologies—Command, Terrain, Fleet, Detect and Health. GAP leads the way with Kubota KX027-4

GAP Hire Solutions, one of the world’s largest fleet customers for Kubota mini excavators, has shown its intent to continue to offer its customers market leading machinery innovation by purchasing over 100 new Kubota KX027-4 excavators in 2017.

Kubota is now GAP’s sole supplier of excavators up to 8 tonne. The Glasgow based hire company employs more than 1,700 people across 140 depots in the UK, with the latest KX027-4s model bolstering the company’s fleet throughout the country. Ken Stewart, Head of Procurement at GAP Hire Solutions, said: “With the increased amount of regeneration in urban areas across the UK, the demand in the market for a quality three tonne excavator is at record levels. Kubota’s KX027-4 certainly delivers for our customers. Like all Kubota machines, the product is reliable, delivers high performance, comfortable to operate and holds value. “Customer feedback on the KX027-4 model has been really positive, so investing in 100 machines throughout the year has made perfect business sense, with the new eight tonne KX080-4 also proving popular. “We now have in excess of 4,000 Kubota machines stationed in our depots across the UK, which highlights not only the value in which we hold the machines themselves, but also Kubota’s presence as a brand and our business relationship. Euro Auctions tops the £200 million mark at its Leeds sales site this year for the first time – with next year already shaping up well Euro Auctions, leading auctioneers of used industrial plant, construction machinery and agricultural equipment, continues to hold the largest single auctions anywhere in Europe in recent years, with the final sale at its Leeds site taking the annual hammer total over the £200million mark year for this site for the first time.

Staged every couple of months, each of the three-day auctions at Leeds consistently attracts around 4375 quality lots from 450 vendors, which in turn attract around 2100 bidder registrations, many still preferring to attend the sales in person rather than bid online. “Demand for used and as new quality plant and equipment in the UK and around the globe is on definitely on the rise, which is why we are seeing record growth in consignments and the number of bidders signing up for each sale,” declared Jonnie Keys, Operations Manager of Euro Auctions. “Our ever popular Leeds sale has broken the £200 million mark for the first time and interest from both consignors and bidders is already high for the next sale in Leeds in late January 2018 and we’re forecasting great things for our upcoming event at Kissimmee, Florida in February.” In addition to Leeds, Euro Auctions successfully operates sites in Germany and Spain; in Dromore, Northern Ireland; in Brisbane, Australia; plus added both Dubai and Hong Kong as new locations this year. New Kobelco hybrid comes to Plantforce Since developing the first full hydraulic excavator in 2006, Kobelco’s hybrid system has evolved significantly. The all new electric swing motor provides operability unique to hybrid machines. During swing acceleration the swing motor is only powered by electricity accumulated in the lithium-ion battery which contributes to the SK210HLC-10’s exceptional fuel efficiency. The braking energy generated during swing deceleration is converted into

electricity which is stored. The SK210HLC-10’s large lithium-ion battery allows greater retention of stored electricity to provide the necessary electrical output to a new Kobelco-developed 25kW power-assist generator motor. The 21tonne excavator has a Stage IV compliant Hino engine. According to Plantforce Operations Director Sam Mercer, “This new hybrid machine provides the best in fuel efficiency

without any compromise on performance. Working off current data, we have seen a 16% fuel saving against the conventional SK210-10 which we consider to be the market leader in fuel economy as well as a further 20% saving against other manufacturers excavators in this class. This makes the new hybrid a very attractive machine all round for our customers.”

CEA will partner again with Primary and Secondary Engineer

The CEA (Construction Equipment Association) has for a second year teamed up with educational organisation Primary Engineer to work with primary and secondary schools in the Leicestershire area. The catchment area has been widened this year to include schools in Coventry - the schools will work on exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) vehicle and fluid power engineering projects. The first event CEA and Primary Engineer collaborated on was held at last year’s Plantworx exhibition and it was a resounding success! Local schools worked on their projects throughout the year following training sessions with the Primary Engineer teams. The school children, along with their teachers, then brought their projects along to Plantworx for the ‘Celebration Event’ where their vehicles and fluid power models were scrutinized by judges. Judges included engineers from Caterpillar, JCB and Perkins, who volunteered for the role, and from other sponsor com-

panies including AMI, Bomag, BSP Foundations, GKD, Gomaco, Datatag, Marubeni Komatsu, Nylacast, Point of Rental and TriMark. The CEA and Plantworx team had very positive feedback from the schools involved and many said that if this event was run each year – it would automatically be added to the school curriculum. This initiative forms part of the CEA Skills Council programme - all part of the drive to engage young people in STEM projects as a means of inspiring careers in the sector. JCB’s Apprentice Programme Advisor, Chris Morris, attended the 2017 celebration event at Plantworx he said, “The JCB Engineering Talent Programme would like to thank Plantworx, the CEA and Primary Engineer for inviting us along to the Primary and Secondary Engineering Award. The day was thoroughly enjoyable, and it was great to see the young budding engineers in action. We brought along the Apprentice Built Loadall which was manufactured and built entirely by 68 JCB engineering apprentices at our World Headquarters in Staffordshire. This made

such an impact with the students and the advice given by our apprentices will hopefully help inspire them into a career in engineering. Some of the thought and hard work that went into the projects was fantastic and it was great to see the smiles on each of the student’s face during the trials.” Mr Morris concluded, “As we know, the UK is heavily short of engineers and Primary Engineer is doing a fantastic job in helping to promote engineering through school engagement, by setting tasks and importantly, making it enjoyable. It was an excellent achievement by all. Keep up the good work!” ABOUT PRIMARY ENGINEER AND THE UNIVERSE OF ENGINEERING. Primary Engineer has been working with teachers to address the fundamental issue of a lack of engineers and the wider perception of engineering since 2005. It is a not-for-profit organisation instigated through seed-corn funding from the then Department of Trade and Industry. It has grown over the last decade to deliver

teacher training to over 1000 teachers annually, bringing the programme, in the classroom, to over 33 000 new pupils, establishing itself as part of the curriculum in thousands of schools across the UK. The research demonstrates that primary teachers find STEM subjects more difficult to teach, this lack of skills increases the disengagement of pupils with these subjects from a very early age. Primary Engineer has addressed this issue by providing teachers with practical skills and academic knowledge to subtly apply and embed the theoretical into the practical, effectively ‘STEM by Stealth’. The impact on the teaching professionals and their pupils which has been reported anecdotally in numerous schools, Ofsted reports and evaluations from Engineering UK’s Tomorrows’ Engineers programme which funded some of Primary Engineers engagement with schools have also demonstrated significant impact on learning outcomes and experiences. Over the last decade Primary Engineer has responded to the demand led by teachers and local companies expanding the programme from the first Primary Engineer training days delivered to primary teachers to a comprehensive suite of training and whole class activities. There are sponsorship opportunities available for this years’ CEA and Primary Engineer project and the CEA would be

Customizable dashboard for a new Mecalac Site Dumper MTA, a company known for the development and production of a wide range of electromechanical and electronic products for major OEMs, announces the beginning of the collaboration with Mecalac, a major producer of compact class construction equipment, thanks to the delivery of its Spot off-the-shelf dashboard. The Spot dashboard has been chosen by the French multinational to equip a new Mecalac Site Dumper to be launched at the end of 2017.

MTA Studio, which is the easiest solution for off-highway OEMs needing customizable off-the-shelf dashboards and displays, allows for full dashboard configuration both in graphics and operating logics using programs written in C/C++, Functional Block Diagram (FBD), and LADDER. The software also contains a real-time debugger and a number of libraries with various available functions the customer can choose to integrate, depending on application needs. These products have hardware and software architectures that are very similar, but with a range of looks, sizes, numbers of LEDs, inputs and outputs, as well as different screen types to meet the needs of the offhighway world. The electronic products currently developed with MTA Studio consist in 6 dashboards and 4 displays, all part of a standard range that is always available and constantly expanded. It is noteworthy that 3 displays can be configured not only with MTA Studio, but also with an Android environment for more powerful graphics. Production starts in UK of innovative JCB site dumpers The first of a range of new JCB site dumpers are rolling off the company’s World HQ production line – including the unique Hi-Viz model which brings new levels of safety to the market. JCB announced plans to manufacture its own range of the popular machine last year and production is now underway at Rocester, Staffordshire – a move which will create 70 new jobs in the next 12 months. The range being produced includes the innovative seven-tonne payload JCB 7T-1 Front Tip Hi-Viz model designed to directly address growing industry concerns over accidents and serious injuries involving site dumpers on construction sites. The complete range is compliant with the latest safety legislation including ISO 5006:2017 and EN474. It is part of a range of eight other site dumper models for the one to nine tonne market. The biggest market for the machines is the UK and Ireland followed by

France. JCB Site Dumper Managing Director Richard Butler said: “We are delighted that manufacturing is underway in the UK for a brand new range of JCB site dumpers, which will bring new levels of safety to the market through innovation. “Reaction to the launch of this new range has been exceptional and customers can look forward to seeing the seven and three tonne models on the JCB stand at the Executive Hire Show in February.” The JCB 7T-1 Front Tip Hi-Viz model features a reduced skip height and unique design which delivers huge improvements in visibility, while a longer wheelbase and lower centre of gravity boosts stability. Kubota gear up for exciting launch at the Executive Hire Show

Also on site will be the KX042-4, the most environmentally friendly excavator in its class. The mini-excavator incorporates a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Common Rail System (CRS) with Kubota’s ECO Plus mode to maximise fuel efficiency. In addition, a whole host of other Kubota machines will be on display, including a number of firm favourites within the plant hire sector, such as the K008-3, KX016-4 and the zero tail swing U17-3 and U27-4 models. The company’s KC70VHD-4, a reliable high dump tracked carrier that’s ideal for moving materials on-site through narrow spaces and on softer ground, will also feature on-stand. Kubota UK build for the future with £1.2m investment to improve operations Leading machinery manufacturer Kubota UK has invested £1.2 million to enhance operational performance and continue to set the highest health and safety standards at its UK headquarters in Thame.

The investment, part of the Kubota UK’s commitment to provide its customers with a first class service offering, includes expanding its office and meeting room space by renovating a previous storage building into state-of-the-art office facilities. The Thame site has also had groundworks resurfacing completed to enhance traffic flow around the site, as well as refurbishment works carried out to its industry leading Training Academy and Research & Development (R&D) centre. The improvements also include a new cantilever racking system that will help streamline its inventory, offer more space to hold stock and help maintain its ‘first in, first out’ (FIFO) supply method. Liugong looks North Having recently established a new depot in Manchester to serve the area, UK Liugong dealership Construction Plant & Machinery Sales (CPMS) are now expanding sales and service into the North West of the country, with a number of high profile deals already being completed. One for the first to join the ranks of Liugong ownership in the area was Stockport based M.T. Kaill (Plant Hire) Limited. The business was founded some 42 years ago by the current chairman Tudor Thomas, having initially set up shop with one machine and a lorry. The company has expanded greatly over the years and today operates a fleet of over 170 machines covering the North West, in addition to specialist rail machines which operate on a nationwide basis, building a reputation along the way for providing a top-class service to the industry. The company have taken delivery of six 22 tonne class Liugong 922E hydraulic excavators with a further two on order. Talking about the decision to purchase the machines Kaill’s Managing Director Steve Thomas said, “We had the Liugong on demonstration and we were impressed with what we saw, as were our operators out in the field who all commented that the machines offered excellent performance, smoothness in operation and good comfort levels. We were impressed with the dealer’s level of service and customer care, whilst offering us a very good and competitive package; as such we thought the machines would be a good product for us going forward”. Salford Excavations was established 5 years ago by Wes Lawrence, Owner, who is assisted in the day to day running of the business by Operations Director Simon Saxon. The company engages in excavation works, civil engineering and small demolition works and is experiencing steady growth. This growth see’s the company bidding for larger jobs and with that in mind they are investing in more modern kit and attachments. The business currently runs a fleet of 12 machines ranging from sub-one tonne micro excavators up to 40 tonne excavators, with additional kit including crushers and tipper lorries with grabs. The excavator fleet features a mixture of brands, with the latest to join them being a 30-tonne class

Liugong 933E, which will be supplied with an OilQuick attachment by ECY Haulmark. Talking about the Liugong addition Simon Saxon said, “We took a Liugong on demo and ran it beside two other brands in our fleet, all of our experienced operators spent time in it and all were impressed with the way it performed. We had a good look at all the key components that are fitted into them and quickly realised they are all top name and well proven parts from blue chip suppliers, all in a very competitive package”. Wes Lawrence commented, “We were very happy with the lads at CPMS who have been extremely helpful all the way through, nothing has been too much trouble or bother and for us that level of personal touch means a lot, its something a lot of the major manufacturers have lost these days”. Another local business investing in Liugong excavators is Bagnall Demolition, who have been trading in the area for some 35 years. This company runs a fleet of 8 hydraulic excavators from a number of other manufacturers including Komatsu and Hyundai. These machines will now be joined by two Liugong excavators consisting of 30tonne class 928E and a 50-tonne class 950E model, both of which will be supplied with time saving OilQuick systems supplied and

fitted by ECY Haulmark. Bagnall Demolition’s Director Andrew Fisk said, “When we first started looking at LiuGong, we talked to people in the industry about them and we were impressed with what we heard, so we made contact with CPMS discussed a deal which was extremely competitive and went for it! The main questions for us were, are they are strong and do they have good build quality as demolition is hard work on machines, our operators said they tick all the boxes and that’s why they are joining the fleet”. North Wales based Family owned business Thomas Plant Hire was established in 1999 and initially started out with a second hand JCB 3CX. Today the fleet totals 1200 machines from a wide variety of manufacturers including Hitachi, Komatsu, Volvo and Caterpillar. In addition to its Holywell base, the company now has a second depot in Widnes. The company has recently added two 40 tonne class Liugong 939E hydraulic excavators to the fleet, talking about the latest acquisitions Managing Director Wyn Thomas said, “We have heard good things about the Liugong products from others in the industry and we were also very pleased with the availability of the machines, we are confident they will be a good fit for our fleet”.

Record start for 2018 for Fairfax Yorkshire Plant Hire Company Fairfax have announced a record start to 2018 with 230 machines booked out in just four days. Hire Director Matthew Love comments “We managed to complete our move to the new four acre site in Selby in December and our staff have pulled out all the stops to keep up with demand for our plant from our customers since we started last Tuesday 2nd January”. “Between our Selby and Leeds depots we will have delivered, over 100 excavators, almost 70 dumpers with the balance made up with telescopic handlers and rollers, by

Monday 8th January”. “This is a substantial increase on our activity from January 2017 and reflects the growth in our customer base and the confidence they have shown in our ability to meet their demands for first class plant at competitive rates”. Development Director Mark Love added “We have already identified some of the additional plant which we will be ordering this year and further announcements will be made in due course”. “It is an excellent start to the new year and puts us well on the way to our target to grow the business substantially this year”.

Proximity warning specialist SiteZone Safety has launched Dumper Advance to prevent collisions between forward tipping dumpers and site workers. Inspired by client feedback, Dumper Advance is a variant of SiteZone Safety’s original RFID proximity warning system, SiteZone. SiteZone is unaffected by external physical factors like mud and inclement environmental conditions. This differs from the current camera and ultrasonic proximity warning technology used on dumpers which is susceptible to inference from environmental factors. It further improves on site dumper proximity detection zones by making allowances for a full skip when the dumper is in use. If there is a loaded skip (and even an overload or unlevel load), visibility in the front of the dumper is compromised. Furthermore, risk of collision with workers on foot

is increased if the driver’s view is impeded. Dumper Advance is robustly designed so it can be placed directly under the skip of the machine, using a discreet antenna device which allows for the creation of a larger detection zone at the front of the vehicle which is the major point of concern. The device is rugged and can handle whatever bumps and scrapes are subjected to the skip – a pivotal design challenge that SiteZone Safety had to overcome. The Dumper Advance RFID antenna is fitted to the site dumper, while site workers wear RFID transponders fitted to their hard hats or sleeves. When a worker breaches the detection zone of a machine, both parties receive a warning. The worker’s tag vibrates, and the driver receives an audible alarm in the vehicle. A differentiating feature of Dumper Advance is that it only detects SiteZone transponders. Therefore, only

workers wearing those transponders will trigger an alert; this differs from conventional ultrasonic versions currently used, which are not targeted and have more indiscriminate detection capability. You will get the best price for your kit and you will make more money. ‘Buyers are tryers’ and if a bidder is prepared to part with decent money for a piece of kit he is going to want to jump up into that cab, turn the ignition, flick the controls and put the machine through its rudimentary paces. If that machine is in rough order, filthy, oily, and greasy with a cab floor full of grime and rubbish, that prospective buyer is going to pass. It is generally accepted that even by cleaning the cab windows, you can add £500 plus to the sale

price of a vehicle. Hello! Have we got your attention now? One other glaring mistake many sellers make when putting machinery through an auction is not ensuring it is capable of running. This may seem like an obvious requirement, however, approximately 25% of sellers do not pay attention to these details and, as a result, may be loosing thousands of pounds on that sale. So to appeal to buyers make you piece of plant as accessible as possible. Ensure the battery is fully charged, there is fuel in the tank, no fuses are miss-

ing and the engine starts on the key. Who is going to bid on a machine that needs to be towed onto the auction ramp? Yep, you said it, not you. So why would you sell a machine in that sorry state and expect it to fetch good money. Exactly, you wouldn’t. Euro Auctions is a leading international company when it comes to selling used plant and machinery and here are their top ten tips on how a seller should present a machine or piece of equipment for sale at auction.


Know how 1. Which Sale? Before selling a piece of plant or machinery consider where to sell to gain best possible price. Many markets attract a particular type of buyer who will have a need for or interest in particular makes, models or types of machinery. By speaking to a Euro Auctions sales manager, a seller can gain a better idea of where to send the equipment and machinery he wishes to sell. Certain brands of machinery and equipment fare better at certain auctions. For example, canopy mini excavators sell very well at our auction site in Spain, whilst ‘zero tail swing’ excavators sell well at Dormagen in Germany. Researching the market before selling your plant can prove invaluable. 2. Think like a Buyer It’s accepted that low hours machines are best and make the most money, but if that low hours machine has had a tough life, it may not be pretty. Presenting your machine for sale as you would wish to buy it is the key. This should be your pre auction mantra. It has been proven from the sales record of Euro Auctions that a well presented machine will always make the best price. There are many simple things that one can do, but the important tip here is “DO IT!”. A couple of simple things can make a whole heap of a difference to a buyer, which will generate a better profit. 3. Documentation Having a service history is a lucrative aid to getting best price. This is not always possible, but if the servicing of the item has been carried out by a main dealer, that information will be on record and can be included in the sale catalogue of the auction. If you can produce CE documentation it can make a significant difference to the value of an item, normally adding between five and ten per cent to the sale value. Also, make sure the machine has proper ID, ensuring the Serial Plate is visible and true. Lastly, if selling commercial vehicles, vans, cars and 4x4’s, please always ensure the vehicle is sent to auction with the registration document, as the vehicle will not be bought by overseas buyers without it. 4. Keep It Clean If a machine looks tidy, the chances are it has been treated well. With scores of similar machines going over the auctioneer’s ramp, what is going to entice bidders to pay the best money for yours? A tidy machine

that looks right! First tip - always clean out the cab, wash the floor, jet wash floor mats and clean the windows. A clean machine is a piece of plant a buyer would be proud to own and operate. Muck and dirt may also be seen as a way of hiding something. This may make a buyer suspicious. If your machine is in good order and there is nothing to hide, clean off the muck. This simple action will increase the price. 5. Bells & Whistles Sometimes the little things can make the biggest difference. Broken or missing mirrors can be seen as an irritation or a nuisance, as can broken light casings or lenses. Make sure all light bulbs work and fuses are complete. Missing windscreen wiper blades shows a lack of love for the machine, as does cracked or damaged cab glass. 6. Fuel, Filters & Battery Always make sure that the battery is fully charged and the fuel tank is half full. This gives the prospective buyer a chance to ‘turn’ the machine over on his pre-auction inspection. If a machine starts on the button first time, the prospective buyer feels good about bidding. It is also worth renewing fuel filters, as a blocked filter may hamper the starting of the engine. 7. Touch Up Ensuring a machine is tidy will grab the eye of the buyer. Repairing or covering knocks, bumps and scratches is fast, simple and effective and can make a great difference to the overall look of the machine. 8. Dry & Drip Free No one likes to see a machine dripping in oil and fluid. Alarm bells sound immediately that rams and hoses may be damaged, pumps may be shot and seals may be worn. A cursory inspection of your piece of equipment and carrying out the necessary repairs before the sale will ensure it doesn’t sit in a puddle of oil spelling TROUBLE in capital letters. Buyers will not just mark the machine down by the estimated cost of the repairs, but will add in the ‘hassle’ factor as well. 9. Tyres & Wheels Like buying a car, a good set of tyre’s can clinch the deal. Tractors, dump trucks, telehandlers, rubber ducks and wheeled loaders can be heavy on tyres. Firstly, make sure tyres on each axle match. Better still; if possible, make sure

tyres match all round. Don’t be tempted to put a mismatched set on just to make up the numbers. Try to fit a good branded set, such as Goodyear or Bridgestone. Don’t be tempted to fit cheap tyres, as this does not bode well. One common mistake is to take off a set that has over 50% life left in them, replacing them with a fully worn set. Don’t, as this will reduce the sale price of the machine by the cost of a set of tyres and potential by the cost of a new set of tyres. Lastly, look out for punctures. A machine will sit badly with a puncture which will make for a bad photograph in the catalogue and on the internet. Take care of wheels. Heavy work may damage the rims. Ensure wheels are clean and true. Painting wheels is an option, but a good clean set is acceptable and preferable. 10. Attachments The lack of good attachments can let a good machine down. This could make the difference between one or two last bids, which could amount to a couple of thousand pounds for the sake of a little bit of thought. Ensure all machines have good attachments. Ensure buckets are good and have good teeth and where possible, present the machine with a full set of buckets. This will draw the eye of the bidder that is looking for a machine for his own use. A-Plant among UK’s top 100 Apprenticeship employers for consecutive year

A-Plant has been celebrated once again for being one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship employers. The UK’s largest equipment hire company was named in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list for the second year running at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2017 held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. A-Plant’s commitment to training the next generation of skilled plant maintenance teams, customer service personnel and transport and logistics teams is pioneering for the construction equipment rental sector. There are currently 166 apprentices in training across five different apprenticeship streams. A-Plant invests more than £2m in the programme annually and has an industry leading retention rate. A-Plant’s apprenticeship programme was first launched in 2005. Since then many apprentices have been promoted to senior roles across the business and the programme is oversubscribed each year.

She explained: "FLG Services provides lifting and safety equipment so some of the products are very technical but I get a great deal of support from my mentor and my line manager to help build my product knowledge. “I work directly alongside my mentor and he guides me with my coursework, shows me the filing systems and generally helps me a lot. I'm learning something new every single day and hope to become a Hire Controller once I've successfully completed my apprenticeship.” Paige Carter is a Fitter for A-Plant Powered Access and is based at a service centre in Stockton-on-Tees. She completed a threeyear plant maintenance apprentice with APlant and in the final year was the first

female winner of a national award at the Construction Plant-Hire Association's (CPA) ‘Stars of the Future’ awards. She explained: “Initially I looked into a number of different apprenticeships across the construction industry and A-Plant stood out as it gave me the opportunity to learn about a range of engineering disciplines - mechanical, electrical, hydraulics and fabrication. “My colleagues are absolutely lovely and if you offered me a job in a nice warm office, I wouldn't take it. I love working in the workshop and I wouldn't have it any other way.” Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service, commented on APlant being named a Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer. AFi’s training division Gains Matrix standard reaccreditation AFI’s Training Division – which was the first in the working at height and safety related training sectors to gain the Matrix Standard – has now gained reaccreditation for the fourth consecutive year. To gain the Standard, the division’s two operations – UTN Training and Integrated Training Solutions – were assessed in four areas: leadership and management, resources, service delivery, and continuous quality improvement. Training Division Managing Director Matt Scott said: “Customers are increasingly looking for training providers that meet their due diligence checks. They want to be sure that the people that they are dealing with are proficient, professional, current and customer focused. The external accreditation proves that we meet this criteria,

and it also instills confidence in the customer that they are dealing with an operation that has been through a very in-depth assessment.” The Matrix Standard reaccreditation report listed the training division’s strengths as being staff development, overcoming barriers that learners may have, the effectiveness of the sign up and induction process, and the industry knowledge of the tutors and assessors. The report said that some learners had been apprehensive about attending a training course but had been put at ease. A typical comment from a learner was: “I don’t do classrooms normally, but I didn’t have any fears about coming back for day 2.” UTN Training provides working at height and safety and skills training at 30

CPA releases Safety publication for Forward Tipping Dumpers This issue being around safety, I thought it would be good to look at the excellent work done by the CPA on some of the safety initiatives they have undertaken. The one to focus on was the forward tipping dumpers which can be downloaded free from the CPA site. FROM THE CPA: Following a number of recent serious incidents involving Forward Tipping Dumpers, an industry forum was formed in October 2016 with an aim to avoid future incidents that have happening with these machine types. Two key factors of past incidents include the overturning of a dumper and of individuals being struck by a dumper. At subsequent forum meetings, seven principles were agreed as the basis of an action plan that covers effective vision, machine stability, training and information, competence, travelling on spoil heaps, exclusion zones and equipment selection. As part of its support to the programme, the CPA has produced an operational safety guidance publication titled ‘Staying Safe When Operating Forward Tipping Dumpers’, aimed principally at operators for refresher training purposes. It has been divided into three sections: • Section one consisting of a ‘stay safe by’ list of actions for operators; • Section two consisting of the supporting underpinning knowledge providing the ‘how’s and why’s’ of each action, and designed to provide assistance for tool box talks and one-to-one familiarisation activities; • Section three being aimed at managers and supervisors in terms of planning and supervision requirements. The publication includes a case study to aid learning, based on an observed event, and outlines the causes and consequences of the activity and how it can be prevented. Much of the content of section two has been kindly supplied by the CITB from their Construction Plant Competence Scheme

(CPCS) card renewal fact sheets that rechecks core knowledge of their cardholders on card renewal. This CPA-produced publication has been designed to support a number of existing safe operational guidance publications from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) including their HSG 144 safe use of vehicles on construction sites. The staying safe guidance can be downloaded free-of-charge from the CPA website at https://www.cpa.uk.net/safetytechnicalpublications/ Colin Wood, Chief Executive of the CPA said: “The issue around dumper safety has become a major topic for our members as well as the industry in general. Because of this, we are co-leading the forum along with CECA and as part of our commitment, we pressed ahead to devise this operator-

based safety guidance. This will go some way towards helping industry address the issues, but it is only the first step that we’re taking in setting out guidance for safer dumper operations” Kevin Minton, Director of the CPA and co-Chair of the forum added: “We are seeking a range of solutions to ensure the operator and others stay safe. As part of the forum’s action plan, the Stay Safe guidance will be the first of a number of documents that will be published through the CPA. Others will include a Good Practice Guide on Forward Tipping Dumpers which will be devised by the Strategic Forum Plant Safety Group, and an update to the Plant Safety Group’s work on Ground Conditions. This update will provide guidance and recommendations for the operation of dumpers on spoil heaps”.

LAMMA Show cut short after successful first day

This year's LAMMA show was on track to be the most successful yet until the weather took a turn for the worse, leading to the suspension of the second day. The show was scheduled to take place on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th January and opened on a crisp and sunny morning. However, the weather changed dramatically overnight and violent winds battered the site before daybreak of the second morning, leaving event organiser AgriBriefing (previously Briefing Media) no option but to cancel the rest of the show. Many exhibitors reported an excellent first day, when visitor numbers appeared to be heading for a new high. Positive noises coming from the government about its plans for a post-Brexit agricultural policy and the improved livestock and arable commodity prices that followed the Brexit vote helped create the buoyant mood. Many of the 900 exhibitors reported busy stands and serious interest in their wares from key decision makers across a wide range of farm businesses. Elisabeth Mork-Eidem, group head of events of AgriBriefing, which owns the

LAMMA show, said: "There was a real buzz in the air on the first day of LAMMA '18. Everything about the show felt positive, it was busy and noisy and had all the makings of an extremely successful event. "Exhibitors large and small used the event to launch hundreds of new products, underlining LAMMA's reputation as a launchpad for all types of machinery and equipment. “We were all set for a fond farewell to Peterborough with over 20,000 visitors on site on Wednesday, and the feedback we've had from a number of exhibitors is that it was the best day in LAMMA's history.� Storm damage However, the organisers were left with no option but to suspend the second day due to the extensive damage caused by the storm in the early hours of Thursday morning. Mrs Mork-Eidem said: "The decision to cancel was not taken lightly and the team is devastated as they work extremely hard all year to make LAMMA the fantastic event it is. "However, it was made based on the advice of our health and safety team, our contractors and the operational team. When I

arrived on site at around 5am, the storm had already got hold and ripped open a number of the larger marquee structures. "At the peak we recorded gusts over 65 mph on site. When the wind subsided, and it was safe to do so, we sent out the contractors to assess the structural integrity of the various structures. "Following that and as it started to get light, we sent out our stewards to assess the internal damage. Based on the information we got back, we then made that call to suspend the second day of the show." Mrs Mork-Eidem said: "There was structural damage to some of the smaller stand marquees together with extensive damage internally in a number of halls and also outside. This included the shell scheme collapsing, twisted metal, broken glass and stands that were half collapsed, with the potential of falling further when moved. "We did get and assessed timelines for making the site safe, but in reality this would have taken too long," she added. "Due to the nature of the showground, it is not possible to open to the public as long as any area is unsafe and we were left with no choice." All access to the site was suspended, in-

"It would have been impossible to ensure visitors stayed in their vehicles and away from the site. As we said last Thursday, our main focus was to keep people safe. "We did unfortunately have one serious casualty in the early hours of the storm. The individual is in hospital and should make a full recovery and our well wishes goes out to him and his family." Mrs Mork-Eidem said she fully understood how testing it was for exhibitors, visitors, contractors and staff alike, and greatly appreciated the understanding shown and the help in getting everyone off site safely. "We're also very grateful for the numerous messages of support we've received since Thursday, which have meant so much to the extended LAMMA team of stewards, contractors, traffic managers, security and health and safety officers; for whom this has been a very challenging few days." Next year's event moves to the NEC, which, as well as remaining free to visit (both in terms of entry and car parking) should protect against weather like that experienced on Thursday, said Mrs MorkEidem. "Curtailing the show last week was heart breaking for everyone. We are now focusing all our resources and working closely with the NEC team to make sure we continue to deliver a great LAMMA in 2019."
